Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier is a massive stratovolcano. It is located 54 miles southeast of Seattle. The elevation of Mount Rainier is 14,411 ft. The last eruption that Mount Rainier has had

was more then a century ago. Mount Rainier’s National Park was established

on March 2nd,1899. The size of Mount Rainier’s National Park is

235,625 acres. It’s climbed by at least 2,500 people a year!

Crater Lake

Crater Lake is located in Oregon, about 80 miles east of Medford.

The size of Crater Lake’s National Park is 183,224 acres.

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States.

There is an average of at least 44 ft. of snowfall each year.

There of 5 trillion gallons of water in Crater Lake.

Death Valley

Death Valley National Park is a national park located east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Death Valley is located in California.

The highest point in Death Valley National Park is Telescope Peak at 11,049 ft.

The lowest part of Death Valley is -282 ft. in Badwater.

The Highest temperature it has ever been in Death Valley is 134 degrees F on July 10, 1913.

Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon is an astounding277 miles long and up to 18 miles

wide. The Grand Canyon took 3-6 million years to form. It was formed by the

Colorado River. The Colorado River flows at a average speed of 4 miles per hour. There are 70 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 25 types of

reptiles, and 5 species of amphibians. It was made a National Monument in 1908 ,and became a National Park

in 1919. It is populated by six Native American tribes: Hopis, Navajos, Havasupai,

Paiute, Pueblo, and Hualapai.

Yellowstone

Yellowstone is 3,472b square miles long.

Yellowstone’s National Park is 2,221,766 acres.

The highest point in Yellowstone is 111,358 ft.

The lowest point is 5,282 ft. Yellowstone is 96% in Wyoming. The highest temperature

recorded is 98 F. The lowest is -66 F.

Yellowstone is the worlds largest national park.

Yellowstone is longer then Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

Mt. Rushmore Gutzon Borglum was the sculptor of Mt. Rushmore. Carving began on Mt. Rushmore in 1927. It was completed in 1941. The granite faces tower over 5,500 ft. above sea level. Each of the president’s heads were as tall as a 6 story building. The presidents on Mt. Rushmore are George Washington,

Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Badlands

The Badlands are located in South Dakota and North Dakota It was established as Badlands National Monument on the 4th

of March in 1929. The park is made up of about 244,000 acres. 75 million years ago the Badlands was a shallow ocean.

Traces of the ocean can still be seen. The Pierre Shale is rich with the fossils of prehistoric

creatures.

New Orleans

New Orleans is located in Southeastern Louisiana straddling the Mississippi River

New Orleans is a major U.S port and the largest metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana.

New Orleans has a population of 1,235,650 as of 2004.

New Orleans is the city of jazz.

Chicago

Louis Jolliet a Canadian explorer and Jesuit Jacques Marquette were the first Europeans to discover the Chicago area in 1673.

The first permanent settlement was founded in 1781 by Jean Baptiste.

The location of the mouth of the Chicago River was chosen for it’s strategic value for a trading post.

In 1833 Chicago was officially incorporated as a town.

Great Smoky Mountains

It is the most visited national park system. The park includes 500,000 acres. The park also includes 800 miles of hiking trails, 10

campgrounds, and 1,500 types of plants. Some 1,500 bears live in the national park. The idea for the park came from a wealthy family in

Knoxville, Tennessee.

Manassas Battlefield

The battlefield is located in Manassas, in Prince Williams County.

Virginia preserves the site of two major Civil War battles.

The battles of Bull Run were fought between August 28th and August 30,1862.

The White House

The White House is located in Washington D.C. in Maryland.

The White House is a world- wide symbol of the presidency in the U.S.A.

The White House was built between 1792and 1800.

There are 132 rooms in the White House. Every president in the U.S.A since John

Adams.

Boston Harbor

It is located in Massachusetts Bay home to the port of Boston a major shipping facility in the northeast.

Boston Harbor is a natural harbor.

It was discovered in 1614 by John Smith.

The harbor itself comprises 540 square miles with 180 miles of shoreline and 34 harbor islands.

Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The Statue of Liberty was built from 1884 to 1886. The Statue of Liberty’s face was modeled after the sculptors

mother, Charlotte. Ellis Island is also part of the Statue of Liberty National

Monument.

Salem Massachusetts

The population of Salem Massachusetts was 40,407 at the 2000 census.

Salem’s nickname is Witch City. Salem may be widely known as the site of the Salem witchcraft

trials of 1692.
