Waiting on deck, however, is a different story. "Ooh, being over there's the hardest part," said Monaceras officer Taylor Clark, gesturing toward a sequin-laden girl who listened for her cue Friday in the sidelines of New Braunfels Middle School's main gym. "That's when you're really nervous," Clark said. But the dancer bounded onto the floor moments later with a comfortable grin, and Clark herself betrayed no anxiety during a sultry routine to Dusty Spring- field's "Son of Preacher Man" in the first round of an event that drew about 600 competitors to New Braunfels High School. The annual HTEDance Texas Dance Team Championship Series, held for the fifth year Saturday in New Braunfels, brought local dancers — including the Smithson Valley Silver Spurs, the Canyon Aristocats and the New Braunfels Mono- ceras and Mystics — together with more than 20 other teams for judged compe- tition from sunup until about 9 p.m. Trophies were awarded in genres including jazz, lyrical, pom, military, novelty and hip-hop, and a high-kick category with six preliminary rounds. The dancers put in "many, many hours" of work prior to competition, said Kellie Jackson-Jandt, Monoceras and Mystics director, and emotions run high at events like the championship series. "Oh yes," Jackson-Jant said. "We see everything from tears of total panic and fright to (tears from) being really happy, really relieved the event went well." With returns counted from more than one-third of the Louisiana precincts, he was gaining 53 per- cent of the vote, to 39 percent for the former first lady. As in his earlier Southern triumphs in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, Oba- ma, a black man, rode a wave of African- American support to victory in Louisiana. Clinton made no mention of the night’s contests as she appeared at a Democratic Party dinner in Virginia, site of one of three primaries this Tuesday. Instead, she criticized Arizona Sen. Doll Show drawsrecord crowdsto Civic Center

The state’s largest doll show drew record num-bers Saturday at the New Braunfels Civic Center.

Between 700 and 800 people came to the 16thannual Hill Country Doll Show and Sale, accord-ing to show sponsor Dorothy Meredith, who saidattendance far exceeded her expectations.
