• Students who select a college that best meets their individual needs and talents are more likely to graduate and get a job in their field of study.

Summer Melt - students pay a deposit to attend a particular college but don’t enroll at that college the following fall.

According to Harvard study titled The Forgotten Summer, Top 3 Reasons Students “Melt” are as follows:1. Cost and Counseling – Finding aid from additional sources,

requesting additional aid from the institution, and securing loans.2. Social Anxiety – Is the college the right fit? Fear of leaving home,

making new friends, and facing new experiences.3. Informational Barriers – Trouble understanding college registration

forms, housing options and requirements, and orientation programs.

1. Don’t delay and start planning!2. Talk with your child regarding their interests and goals. What is your

child passionate about? What does your child want to do for a living?3. Make a wish list. What would does your child want in college?

(Consider, the type of school, school size, location, available majors, housing extracurricular activities, diversity, etc.)

4. Don’t emphasize specific colleges, encourage your child to stay open to all the possibilities.

5. Get over name-brand colleges/universities. Your child needs to find a school that best fits what they want to do in life - this trumps bragging rights.

6. Get advice from your child’s counselor, college faculty, students, Alumni, and from people who know you who can suggest

7. Sign-up for college brochures, catalogues and/or email.

Getting Started

12. Take virtual campus tours to get a sense of the campus and academic offerings.

13. Be organized. Secure a large 3-ring binder with plastic inserts or create an electronic file to keep track of the information that you are compiling.
