You have a new show called show Food, Booze & Tattoos, which was broadcast on SABC3. Tell us about it. Food, Booze and Tattoos is a creative travelogue through South Africa, where I get to engage with some of the most impressive artists in those three fields.

How many tattoos do you have and which one is your favourite? No idea! My favourite tattoo at the moment is my RuPaul done by Tamar Thorn at The Body Architects.

Ever had one of your girlfriends names tattooed on your body? Haha, No! I do have one that’s dedicated to an ex, though. I got it after we broke up, so there’s no regrets.

Where is your favourite hangout in Jozi? So, ordinarily I’d pick a specific place in Melville, but at the moment it’s impossible for me to select just one. So I’ll say that

in general the area of Melville is my home. I go there to be with my people, but I have to mention that I get incredibly remarkable breakfasts at Pablo Eggs Go Bar.

Who's your celeb crush? They would be Tao Okamoto and Susan Sarandon. Tao is just so gorgeous I can barely take it. And Susan Sarandon is just totally badass.

Snappchat? Yay or Nay? Nay, not for me. I do like the filters, though. H

As a keen academic and analyst, self-confessed “trend geek”, teacher, speaker and brand consultant, Nicola Cooper is a formidable presence on Africa’s fashion and lifestyle landscapes. As a trend analyst, she melds her observations of time and patterns with her expertise, and ever-expanding research, to chart trends and behaviour on the hyperlocal and international scale.5 www.nicolacooper.co.za @NicolaCoop

Nicola Cooper

As a trend researcher and analyst, I research and read unbelievable amounts of information on a daily basis, so I have been forcing myself to read a little just for myself every morning. At present I am reading the Alexander McQueen Biography ‘Blood Beneath The Skin’ by author Andrew Wilson. I saw it in the Rosebank Exclusive Books and as a self-confessed McQueen fan, I literally ran to the check-out with it. 5 www.exclusivebooks.com

I tend to visit (what we in the fashion industry refer to as) fashion neighbourhoods on the weekend, catching up with friends in Maboneng or Braam and can inevitably be found at Daleah's Eatery or POST – having a delicious breakfast or lunch, chatting with friends or groups I mentor, or just eating cake on any given Saturday. 5 www.playbraamfontein.co.za

New York group of Dandies responsible for the book, ‘I Am Dandy’, are photographing my good friend Lourens Loux Gebhardt aka The Vintage Guru from Namibia in Alexandra alongside some upcoming Dandies in SA, as far reaching as Stellenbosch, and I have been invited to observe and catch up with some of my favourite African stylers. f/IAmDandyBook

On the way home, a stop has to be made at the most incredible pâtisserie, in the Thrupps Centre in Illovo, Château Gâteaux, to buy one of their decadent cakes for a family visitor in the early evening. 5 www.chateaugateaux.co.za

HOTspotsHello Joburg’s

Are they ahead of the curve? Yes, they are. Do they have an exemplary passion for food?

Most certainly! Are you guaranteed both great quality and generous quantities? Without a doubt! These are just three reasons why we’re hooked on the brand new Metro Restaurant in Bryanston.

The minute we heard that it had been relocated and revamped, we raced to the new Metro because we so adored the previous venue that was situated inside Benmore Shopping Centre. The restaurant has always been recognised for its power to convene Joburg’sfinestandthisglamorousbistrohasbeen embedded in both our minds and our bellies. We couldn’t wait to delve right into this new hotspot!

The most intriguing aspect about the space is its size – the new venue is spacious yet warm, and swanky yet comfortable. It’s the ideal spot to wine and dine with family and friends, that special someone or an important business associate. From the ambience to the service, every guest will feel like royalty and will be able to indulge in the full experience of this classic spot.

Above all else, what impressed us most about the evening was the food. Firstly, we were welltakencareof bythestaff, whopaidattention to every little detail and served us the most spectacular cuisine. For starters, we recommend Metro’s famous peri-peri chicken liversthatcomeservedinamagnificentcreamy peri-peri and lemon sauce. Can we get a hallelujah!? These robust beauties W

Let them eat meatMetro Restaurant & Loungeoverflowwithflavourandaredefinitelyafirmfavourite amongst the regulars. For the health conscious, the nutty beetroot and butternut salad is fresh and simply delicious and the Metro-made spring rolls are divine and guilt-free.

For mains, we applaud the burgers, which are made using 220 gram home-made beef patties. We haven’t stopped salivating since our last bite! If you’re particularly ravenous, look no further than the Metro Dagwood: a succulent steak and a mouth-watering beef patty with bacon, fried egg, cheddar cheese and Metro-made sweet chilli mayo sauce. You can also enjoy their trio of mini burgers, which are a bargain at only 89 bucks! Bonus: you can’t go wrong with their decadent and flavourfulmushroomsaucetotopitalloff.

Metro Restaurant is yet another reason to be proud of our beautiful city, and we highly recommend

you head right on over to their new venue for a memorable night out.

P.S. Don’t forget to grab a cocktail or two (or three) after your meal in the well-designed, graceful and stylish Metro Lounge! H

The Gentlemen’s Arthouse opens in NewtownLadies and gentlemen, boys and girls, crazy cats and acrobats – welcome to the circus! The previously derelict 1911 Edwardian Gentlemen’s Washroom is making a flamboyant re-entry onto the scene as The Gentlemen’s Arthouse special events venue in Newtown.

“‘Arthouse’ is a double entendre on the word ‘outhouse’ which is what this incredible space used to be”, explains Maira Koutsoudakis, CEO of Life Interiors + Architecture + Strategic Design. “Today it’s a celebration of gentlemen – all gentlemen – of the time and the concept of civility, but with a twist. The Gentlemen’s Arthouse, due to its nature as an insular, small foot-print, big concept space is designed as a molecular mixology bar with a high-end tasting menu and jaw-dropping theatrical performances.”.

“The drinks are a bit naughty – that’s how we want them to feel, anyway – and are served in antique glasses. Even the food will be served in whatever piece of ‘antiquery’ we think is appropriate,” says executive chef, Jeanel Pieterse. She’s been working on dishes likestuffedmarrow-bones,pressedspringbok,a bay leaf crème anglaise, and she’s reworking the concept of assiettes.

and the mad hattersHome to the mavericks

Following the craft cocktail trend at high-end bars around SA, the mixologist at Gentlemen’s Arthouse is creating his own range of aromatics and exclusive cocktails. The venue’s semi-precious stone bar will also stock special and boutique wines.

When you enter the Gentlemen’s Arthouse, you enter the world of the curious and surprising, and the only thing to expect is the unexpected. The washroom has been transformed into a quirky, yet luxurious new space with velvet curtains, cathedral-style windows, heavy wooden bars, the original green tiles and urinals.

To further the transformation from an outhouse to an Arthouse, original artwork by famed local artists including William Kentridge, Kendell Geers and Norman Catherine have been installed. H3 010 592 1911 5 www.gentlemensarthouse.com

Kick off those slippers and sweatpants, because with these brand new collections from a few of our favourite designers and retailers, you’re going to want to stay stylish this season.

Zando launches high winter ’16 range

Zando.co.za has officially launched their high winter collection: Fall for Winter, where style meets architectural design. The pieces focus on design with a militant-inspired edge, and were specifically chosen to bring out the bold and celebrate the cold. Winter 16’s absolute fashion focus will leave you feeling polished and ready for the runway.

In complete contrast to Free Fall’in, the Fall for Winter range relies heavily on the natural architectural balance provided by the shoot landscape. Strong lines create a geometric distinction between illustrious rolling hills and linear form.
