Hello everyone, welcome to the October 2013 edition of Ovation. And what a month it has been - both for the company as a whole and also for the achievements of individual staff. Firstly, our award-winners: Brenda Walliss, Front of House manager at The Princess Theatre Torquay, where she has worked for an incredible 51 years, won the UK Theatre Award for Theatre Employee/Manager of the Year Dan Cauldwell, Milton Keynes Theatre’s Assistant Technical Manager, has been awarded The Mayflower Award for Outstanding Achievement in Stage Crew at the Technical Theatre Awards The team at Richmond Theatre were awarded Best Achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility at the Richmond Business Awards ATG was presented with a Special Recognition Award at the annual LinkAble Awards Dinner Many congratulations to everyone, a fantastic effort, and richly deserved recognition. As you will know from my email a couple of weeks ago, ATG’s development has taken another giant leap forward, having acquired new majority shareholders, Providence Equity Partners, one of the world’s leading global investment funds. We are very pleased that current financial partners, Exponent Private Equity, are staying on too and will continue to work alongside Providence as our financial partners. Whilst this is certainly a very significant move for us, there will be no operational changes within the company, and all the existing Executive Directors are remaining with ATG - so very much business as usual for everyone. Undoubtedly this exciting new partnership will enable ATG to realise our ambitions to expand further into international territories, across Asia/Pacific, Australia, Europe and North America, as part of our global development strategy. I hope you feel as we do that this represents a hugely exciting opportunity for the development of the company, and something of which we can all be proud. I would like to take this opportunity once again to thank you for all your unstinting commitment, hard work and loyalty to ATG, helping us build the biggest and best theatre group in the world, and importantly "Making Theatre Magic".

ATG LIFTS THE CURTAIN ON PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES LYCEUM LAUNCH EVENT

ATG has showcased a range of brand partnership opportunities across the Group's impressive portfolio to a number of specially invited brand and sponsorship managers at an intimate event at the Lyceum Theatre on 2 October.

The breakfast event, which was held in the Lyceum's Ambassador Lounge, was presented by newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky and featured a rousing performance from The Jersey Boys. Special guest speakers included ATG's Joint CEO's Howard Panter and Rosemary Squire, ATG Executive Chairman, Greg Dyke and actor, writer and director, Simon Callow.

ATG's Marketing Director, Pat Westwell, said, "This has been an exciting period for ATG. There is a great opportunity with the group and we've spent time developing the ATG portfolio into a vibrant, attractive and credible opportunity for brands. We've had a strong level of interest in what ATG is doing already, partly because this opportunity is so unique and clean, but also because there are varying levels degrees of partnership which can be scaled to match a prospective partner's ambitions. Over the coming weeks we'll be looking to have more in-depth conversations with partners and progress relationships further."

ATG appointed London based sponsorship agency, Generate, to help plan the launch and reach out to potential brand partners.

Speaking at the event, Howard Panter said, "Theatre is a relationship business and ATG is very good at partnering on projects. The simple idea behind ATG is to create the best productions, put them into the best theatres and to give audiences the best all round experience. We're highly visible and we deliver real quality, which means excited, loyal audiences that return again and again. This isn't a cottage industry - it's a national and international platform and as the best in its field, this is an extraordinary opportunity for partners to work with ATG and share in our success both in the UK and internationally."

Rosemary Squire added, "ATG has such great potential to offer a partner. Our theatre network covers the whole country from Glasgow to Brighton, and we are over 4 times as large as our nearest competitor. Both Howard and I are still as enthused as ever by the possibilities that theatre presents -we have come a long way since the early days of being crammed into a tiny office backstage at the Duke of York's. We are ambitious and are always looking to expand the company whilst preserving ATG's character and vision, as well as the magic experience that has been our trademark. We are now excited about sharing this magic with potential partners."

Greg Dyke said, "We're talking here about a company that's quite different - that's been a true innovator. It's a term that's become something of a cliché when talking about brands but I genuinely believe that ATG deserves the description unique. I know from the sports partnerships I've been involved in that connecting with fans in an environment where they've chosen to spend their money and leisure time can foster the long-term relationships that other forms of marketing simply can't deliver. And having such a rich portfolio of theatres, content and other assets means we can offer scalable and ground-breaking opportunities for a partner. ATG is really the Premier League of theatre - but without the divas."

JOEY’S FIRST VISIT TO THE NORTH EAST TO LAUNCH WAR HORSE AT SUNDERLAND EMPIRE JOEY MEETS ANGEL OF THE NORTH

The National Theatre’s production of War Horse makes its North East premiere at the Sunderland Empire next spring and last month, Joey, the life-size equine puppet from War Horse made a special early morning appearance in Gateshead on the site of Antony Gormley’s iconic sculpture, The Angel of the North, followed by an on stage demonstration

at the Sunderland Empire to a specially invited audience.

Jimmy Grimes, War Horse’s Resident Puppetry director in London, led a puppetry demonstration and talk about the history of with puppeteers Shaun McKee (Joey Head), Stuart Angell (Joey Heart) and Michael Brett (Joey Hind).

War Horse is the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, War Horse features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing and galloping horses to life on stage.

Gosforth based actor, Lee Armstrong who is playing Albert said: ‘This is such an amazing show to be working on and I’m so excited about bringing War Horse to the North East. I’m really enjoying rehearsals, and last week I had the opportunity to meet Michael Morpurgo, the author of the original novel, in his home town of Iddesleigh in Devon. We took Joey to the place where the whole story started and it was an inspirational and moving experience being on the very spot where horses and men left Devon to fight for their country nearly 100 years ago.’

Durham based singer and musician Bob Fox plays Songman in War Horse. He played the role for eighteen months in the West End and has returned to the role for this tour. Helen Macfarlane, who plays Baby Joey was born in Ashington, grew up in Cramlington, went to school in Newcastle and went to Durham University.

Ben Phillips, General Manager at Sunderland Empire said: “We’re delighted to officially launch one of the most anticipated shows not only to come to Sunderland, but the North East as a whole today. War Horse is a landmark production for the Sunderland Empire and Ambassador Theatre Group and we’re privileged that the National Theatre has chosen us as their preferred theatre in the North East for a limited three week run next year during their UK tour”.

War Horse has been seen by over 4 million people worldwide since its premiere at the National Theatre in 2007 and continues its hugely successful run at the New London Theatre in the West End. A major tour of North America continues through 2013/14, and a new German language production entitled Gefährten opens in Berlin this month.

AYLESBURY WATERSIDE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE HOSPICE STRICTLY STYLE! CHARITY FUNDRAISING EVENT

Sunday 6 October saw a cha cha charming evening for all involved, as Aylesbury Waterside Theatre joined forces with their nominated charity, Florence Nightingale Hospice, to produce the dance event of the year, Strictly Florence!

Three years in the making, the evening was the result of six month's hard work with the Waterside team and charity representatives from Florence having the task of planning the show's format, finding local dance couples to participate and executing a professional show complete with stage, set and lighting design, comperes and a panel of VIP celebrity judges.

The 12 dance couples were all local with little or no previous dance experience. They had only six weeks of lessons to prepare and learn two dances ready for the live performance in front of star of the Waterside's panto, Anita Dobson, choreographer Scott Cole, celebrity chef and TV presenter Lotte Duncan, ex-professional dance Jean Orchard and the unmistakable Craig Revel Horwood, as well as a sell-out audience.

The event was presented by local MIX 96 radio presenter Katy Butler and comedian Rob Deering (playing Tess and Brucie!), and saw this year's panto beauty Holly Brewer giving a taste of things to come with two beautiful vocal performances.

The auditorium was full to the brim of supporters cheering on the dancers, and the atmosphere was electric with a bubble of feel-good togetherness.

Florence Nightingale Hospice Events Co-ordinator, Karen Shardlow, praised the Waterside Theatre team for their skills, support and advice throughout, saying "It couldn't have provided a better start to our 25 year celebrations."

The theatre donated £1 of every ice cream sold to the charity, and it is believed over £15,000 has been raised through the event so far - with sponsorship money still coming in.

GHOST IS DANCING BBC CHILDREN IN NEED

For the last five months 12 terrified technicians from the Ghost touring company have been taught to dance by 12 professional dancers from the cast all in aid of the BBC’s Children in Need Appeal.

On Sunday 3 November, during the run of the opening tour date at Southampton’s Mayflower

Theatre, they will demonstrate their skills in front of a panel of Judges as part of a Grand Charity fund raising Gala.

With a Star Cabaret, Charity auction and lots of surprises this is the one Charity event of the year that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Neil White, Ghost Company Manager said, "From what started as an idea to raise money mentioned between the cast in crew in the quick change room during the performance one night in Edinburgh, has escalated into Dance fever with the touring company. Apart from raising money for Children in Need it really has made the bond between our touring cast and crew tighter. Everyone has been so committed into giving their all, fitting training whenever they can around the busy schedule of moving such a massive technical show. We just hope that everyone will have as much fun watching the evening as we have had rehearsing it and most importantly we raise money for such an amazing charity".

Michael Ockwell, Mayflower Theatre Chief Executive added, "This event is a wonderful idea, I am so pleased that we can help raise money for Children in Need by offering our venue and facilities. It will be a wonderful event for a very worthy cause and our staff are looking forward to uniting with the touring company of Ghost to provide a great nights entertainment."

The cast of Stoke’s Regent Theatre pantomime, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, gave a lucky audience a taste of what to expect this Christmas after they gathered at the theatre for the 2013 Panto Launch.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU... SUKO AKULIN

Each month we profile a different face from within ATG. This month we would like to introduce Suko Akulin.

What's your role at ATG and where are you based? Customer Experience Manager, technically based in Head Office, Woking but most days I hotdesk in the Property Office in the Lyceum, London. Describe yourself in 3 words. Adventurous, Hapa (Hawaiian for mixed race with Asian/Pacific Islander), ‘Merican. What's your greatest achievement at work? Helping to roll out the Ambassador Experience Packages.

Page 15: Hello everyone, w elcome to the October 2013 edition of ...emarketing.atgweb.co.uk/atg-newsletter/October2013/Ovation-October-2013.pdf · Hello everyone, w elcome to the October 2013

If you won the Lottery, what would your first purchase be and why? An island in the Pacific where I can plot to take over the world. What was the last CD you bought? Does anyone buy CDs anymore? What three films would you take to a desert island and why? High Fidelity, best soundtrack ever; The Princess Bride for the laughs; and then something that I’ve always wanted to see such as the Godfather but my attention span has never let me! What profession other than your own would you like to attempt and why? Professional Waterslide Tester because, of course. If your life was turned into a musical, who would play the role of you and what song would be the show's main anthem? Now obviously I don’t look like her but Mila Kunis because she’s a steaming hot cup o’crazy and the song would be One Foot On Sand by Justin Young. What TV show would you like to see transformed into a stage show? How I Met Your Mother but only if Neil Patrick Harris performed in it. If you had a time machine where would you go and why? Wherever the Doctor takes me... What’s your ideal Friday night out? Start the night off at a silent, fancy dress roller disco dressed up as Chun Li. After a few hours or dizziness, ride on the back of a police horse to the nearest samba club to get my groove on, then head over to a karaoke bar (you can take the girl out of Japan...) to successfully perform Bohemian Rhapsody and ring in the morning by watching the sunrise whilst riding the waves on my surfboard.
