Several women, who refusedtodivulge their identitiesandarealso resi-dent in the hostels, admitted that peopleremove their own geysers because of lackof jobs, “they sell them to buy food.”

)What do you do?I am the Ward Councillor

forWard 15 inSomersetWest,as well as theMaycoMemberfor Health in the City of CapeTown.

)What do you like most

about theHelderberg?The fact

that it is Cape Town withoutbeing in Cape Town, so it isclose to the mountains andthe seawithout the “BigCity”feeling you get in the CBD ofCape Town.

) If you could change onething about the Helderbergwhat would it be?The employment rate. Hav-

key to social cohesion. These factors drive so-cial change in that itdiscourages poverty-driven crime, assistsin keeping children informal educationalstructures and givespeople a stake in theircommunity.

)What is most im-portant to you?Being part of social

Have your say

Strike seasonI agree with Cassy that’s its our constitution-

al right to strike and I refer to the Numsa strikein the Helderberg, you said it remained peacefuland I do not agree with you. I know for a fact thatpeople were beaten and kicked at a local factoryanddidanyonebother tophoneyourpaper tellingyou? No! I am a former shop steward and Cosatumember and for the past few years, every strikecame with violence. Nothing is peaceful. Whatpeople should keep in mind is when you strike, your family suffers, for there is no source of in-come and the big shots tell you to go to the streetsand strike. But at the end of the month there isnothing on the table for your children. As a moth-er I feel disgusted that they were hitting and kick-ing my son because he did not participate in astrike. That’s not a democracy. Cher, SomersetWest

Worker strikes will not be necessary if em-ployers pay their workers a decent salary onwhich they can make a living. The question is,who are the real savages?
