And on Monday last week, Detec- tive Constable Siphiwo Nteta of the Lwandle Police Station got the judg- ment he wanted when the Cape High Court sentenced Anathi Siyabulela Ncukana (also known as “Boetie”) to life imprisonment and 56 years be- hind bars. Ncukana was one of the ten most wanted suspects in the Western Cape. On Monday 10 June he was found guilty on nine out of ten charg- es and acquitted on one charge. He had committed a double murder, five attempted murders, two armed rob- beries and an attempted robbery be- tween 2006 and 2008 in Nomzamo. Nteta (30) was given the case in January 2010. He decided that he would hunt Ncukana down, no mat- ter what. “I love my work. With this case, I wanted to make sure that the man is put behind bars. He terror- ised Nomzamo for three years. I said to myself that I will work hard, even if I don’t sleep. I even cancelled my studies. I cancelled everything so that I could focus on this.” Nteta says Ncukana seemed to be “trigger-happy”. “In the first case, in 2006, when Ncukana was 20, he just shot a Gr 9 pupil in front of Jango’s Tavern in Nomzamo. In the case of the double murder, he shot two men who were drinking in a car in Pholile Park in Nomzamo because they would not give drinks to a friend of his. He shot another man in the back of the neck – the bullet got lodged in his upper jaw and is still there. In Bloemfontein he shot a man in the mouth because he said he was talk- ing too much at a braai. The man sur- vived, but has no teeth. “In all the cases, there was no mo- tive, no robbery. And he was sober – not drunk, not on drugs.” Ncukana was first arrested in 2008 for crimes committed locally. He was released on bail but failed to appear in court, and a warrant of arrest was issued for him. Nteta looked for Ncu- kana everywhere, tracing him to the Eastern Cape, Durban and Johan- nesburg. In November 2011 he found him in Gugulethu and arrested him. He then had to refresh the state- ments of witnesses and gain some new statements. He had to ensure that the testimony of 69 witnesses in total would be ready for the court. So then he rode around the country to gain the statements needed – from Cape Town to Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape and then back to Cape Town. Sometimes he would get to Jo- hannesburg to see a witness, but would be told they are in the Eastern Cape – and he would then get back in his car to journey on. The trial started in the Cape High Court in October 2012 and lasted eight months as the judge evaluated the testimony of 67 witnesses. The judge could not discern a rea- son for Ncukana’s crime and killing spree. His mother had been a teacher and he was raised in a stable home environment. The judge too said that he just seemed to be trigger-happy. Ncukana is also a suspect in an armed robbery in Hermanus and a drug-related case in Manenberg, but is yet to be sentenced for these two cases. On 6 August, Ncukana will ap- pear in the Strand Regional Court on three charges of attempted murder. Nteta was recently named SA’s best detective. He was also last year’s Detective of the Year in the Western Cape. He says that the support of his commander, colleagues and family have made it possible to earn the suc- cess he has achieved. What issues do our youth tackle today? Is there a significantchange in the youth of to-daycompared to theyouthwho have had to fight forbetter education in thepast? With better education

opportunities for ouryouth these days and bet-ter access to various otherresources, one wouldthink that things are notas complicated. Or arethey?Youth Day marks the

dayof theSowetouprising(16 June 1976) which sawover 20 000 pupils run aprotest march against theuseofAfrikaansasamedi-um of instruction in blacksecondary schools. It was a protest march

for equal education for alldespite race.Black youth who were

part of the Apartheidstruggle were active infighting against inequali-ties and eager to receive ahigher and equal level ofeducation to white pupils. Are today’s youth as ac-

tive in tackling issues thatthey face? Do they sharethe same cameraderie? The Gazette asked some

of its younger readerswhat challenges they faceas youth today, how it dif-fers from those faced byyouth in the past, andwhat Youth Day means tothem.

“Youth Day must be celebrated in apositive way where we as youngsterscan enjoy ourselves in a constructiveway,” said Siyathemba Mjikelo fromLwandle. “We must do the right thingat the right time. We can even wearour school uniform to commemoratethose people who fought for oureducation during Apartheid.”

“From what I’veheard, strugglesfaced by youth in thepast were way moreserious. I think wehave it a bit easier to-day. Some of us canstill depend on ourparents and we aregiven an opportunityto get an education,”said Gary Petersen.

Given Madiwe from Strand said:“Most of the work has been done forus, the foundation has been laid andwe nowhave access to education andother resources, especially sportssuch as soccer.”

“One big thing our youth faces is un-employment. I don’t think the youthof today is more empowered, for ex-ample running own businesses. Weare faced with a lack of skills andknowledge,” said Yanga Ncaphayifrom Strand. He will celebrate YouthDay by playing soccer.

“I struggle with access to sport aswell as having a school uniform be-cause of my situation at home. It isdifficult to realise my potensial,” saidSiyavuma Ndela, Strand.

De Koker, StrandWhat can I say?
