“AIMING HIGH FOR 50 YEARS”Dear Parents,
TERM FOUR BEGINS – WELCOME BACK!
It was lovely to see so many of our students happy and positive to be back at school after a relaxing and
enjoyable holiday with their families; the weather was certainly temperamental. Term Four is usually the
busiest of our terms and a look at the Term Planner (attached) will verify this. Place the planner in a
convenient location so you’re aware of what’s happening in your child’s school life and be assured you’ll
be adding more exciting events as the term evolves.
Thank you to all the children and families who used the school grounds responsibly during the holidays.
Tony Twining, our maintenance man, commented on the positive use of the grounds and his belief that
UNIFORM SHOP
The uniform Shop will be open for 2013 Prep Fittings
on
Monday October 15th and Monday November 12th
between 2.15 and 3.15 pm
this discourages negative and destructive actions as well as unwanted characters to the school property, so
thank you.
Thank you Tony for maintaining the school grounds throughout the holidays and ensuring the playground
is safe and ready for our students’ play. John Blair, our cleaner has once again polished the corridors and
cleaned the classrooms ready for an effective term of learning.
SCHOOL REVIEW
We had our school review on Tuesday 18th
September, an all-day event, including Gray Ryan (a critical
friend), Sue Fraser, Cameron Agars, Greg Perry and myself. Throughout the day Gray discussed the
school’s data in relation to Student Learning, Student Engagement and Wellbeing and Student Pathways
and Transitions. He applauded the school for its outstanding results and the fact that it is a great learning
environment for our students. He has written up the Negotiated School Review Report for our school to
which we are responding at staff meetings and school council. I will attach it to the Newsletter and the
School Website once we have finalised the report. This Review assists us with the development of the
School Strategic Plan for the next four years, 2013 – 2016; we are in for exciting times.
The Trans-Tasman Conference which I attended over the last three days in term three was inspirational
and highly informative. It certainly confirms the beliefs we hold in teaching the ‘whole child’, providing
our students authentic opportunities and catering for their different levels of learning; the international
speakers presented educational research that will also support the development of our new School
Strategic Plan. I will provide a summary of my learning with you in the next Newsletter.
INDUSTRIAL ACTION The Australian Education Union (AEU) will continue to take industrial action throughout this term with
various strategies to support their concerns about the breakdown in negotiations regarding teachers’ pay,
career structure, work load, contract employment and unacceptable performance pay proposals. Parents
please be aware that there is impending Industrial Action that will impact on our normal school program
specifically on the morning of Thursday 25 October. There will also be a ban on providing any written
comments or numerical assessment data for the purpose of student reports. The purpose of this ban is to
highlight the significant amount of unpaid work school staff complete to provide written reports about student
achievement. More information will be provided to you as soon as I am aware of the exact nature of the bans
and which teachers may be involved.
TENNIS
Bendigo Bank (Heathmont) in conjunction with HE Parker Reserve Tennis Club are
offering sponsored membership and coaching to interested young plays from grades
1 to 4. Notices have been distributed to all students in these grades.
TRANSITION
Students will continue to experience movement to other classes this term with the goal of students
becoming familiar with expectations for the following year as well as teachers organising balanced
classes for 2013. We expect the students to move to the class level they may be in 2013 throughout
October and November. I’m sure your children will share the excitement of this process with you as it
occurs.
2013 ENROLMENTS
The time of year when we begin planning for the new school year is fast approaching! I would appreciate
it if parents could let me know if they are moving away from Heathmont and therefore their children will
not be attending this school next year. Such information is critical to our planning of grades and our
employment of staff.
Similarly, if any parents know of people who will be enrolling at Heathmont East next year please
encourage them to present themselves to our school so that we can include them in our planning. Thank
you for your support in this matter.
SUNSMART – TERM FOUR
At this early stage of term four only some of our students are wearing their
school uniform hats during recesses to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful
rays. Remember it is compulsory as well as a safety measure. Children are
encouraged to wear ‘school uniform’ sunglasses to protect their eyes
whenever they feel the need.
SCHOOL UNIFORMS
As we start the new term, it is a timely reminder that school uniform is expected at HEPS. At
times, it has been obvious that the standard has dropped and this promotes bad habits and poor
attitudes, as well as reflects badly on the school. Please reinforce our standards by ensuring that
your children attend school looking neat and well groomed.
Pants with stripes or large pockets, cargo pants, capri pants, long shorts and short longs
are NOT school uniform and will not be accepted.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN’S CHECK
As you would be aware, the WWC Check card is valid for five years; please examine when your card is
due to expire. We are obliged under the Working with Children Act 2005 (the Act) to ensure that
individuals who are engaged in ‘child-related work’ have a valid WWC Check. Renewal applications
forms are directly mailed to cardholders, so it is important that you notify the department of your current
postal address should it have changed. Cardholders are able to update their details online.
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES AUSTRALIA
This valuable program will be provided again this term, commencing on Tuesday 23rd
and 24th
October
respectively. The activities provided are as follows:
Grades 3 – 6: Active Dance/Zumba
Grades Prep – 2: Multi skills
Notices should go out shortly for those students interested in participating.
WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTO
As you would be aware we commissioned a 50th
Birthday ‘whole school’ photo. The large photo is
displayed in the foyer. If you wish to have a smaller copy for yourself please order through the school.
All forms are available from the office and cheques to be made payable to School Pix.
The photo is a 17 cm x 26 cm colour photograph at $22 (incl. GST). The last opportunity to purchase this
photograph is Thursday 18th
October.
SPECIAL DRESS DAYS
School Council has approved Friday 19th
October to be a Crazy Hair day; students may jazz up their hair
in exchange for a $2.00 coin which will provide funds to support the Mystery Bags stall at the fete.
Students may dress up to the ‘nines’ as they present for Fashion on the Fields on Friday 2nd
November;
this activity is designed to collect grocery items for the Grade 6C Grocery Stall. Thanks for your
contributions as this supports the fete committee and the success of our fete which of course, all proceeds
go to programs and resources for our students in 2013.
Kind regards,
Kitty Allard.
Principal.
Hello everyone,
I hope the children enjoyed their break from school and that you were able in some ways, to enjoy being
together over the term break.
Certainly, everyone seems to have returned with fresh energy and enthusiasm for what lies ahead!
HEPS VALUES….RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, TEAMWORK, ACCEPTANCE, CONFIDENCE
This term, we are highlighting our HEPS value, ‘Acceptance’.
It was very interesting last year, when we consulted widely with our students, parents and teachers, that
acceptance, inclusion, friendliness, fairness, community care and compassion were all widely valued.
‘Acceptance’ can be viewed as an umbrella over all these values, but what does ‘Acceptance’ mean to
you and your family?
Please help us to think and learn about ‘Acceptance’ by talking with your children about it. Teachers will
be talking with children about it over the next few weeks and it would be terrific if you have talked at
home about it, too.
I have included a couple of pages for the children in this newsletter, introducing them to ‘Bug’. Bug was
at assembly this morning and has a lot to say about acceptance and inclusion. Please encourage your
children to read about Bug. They might even like to write a story about him!
SWIMMING PROGRAM…please bring back permission forms on Monday next week
The HEPS Junior Swimming Program 2012 for our Prep to Year Four takes place this term between
Wednesday 7 November to Friday 16 November. As usual, the course will be run by trained and fully
qualified swimming instructors at the Nunawading Aqualink Centre, and will cover all levels from
beginners to advanced swimmers. The program will be held over an eight day period and each lesson is of
50 minutes duration, with the final lesson being a session of water play, where students can display their
improved swimming skills and water confidence.
Please ensure you send the permission form back to school on Monday. This form shows us your
intention that your child will or will not be swimming and this is essential in terms of our planning. Thank
you for your attention to this detail, as it ensures the smooth running of the program.
OUR OVAL
As you may have noticed, our oval has been left in a less than acceptable state after the completion of the
Building the Education Revolution (BER) building.
We are grateful to one of our prep fathers, Craig Fathers, for his efforts in making the cricket pitch safer,
and assisting with some mowing and line-marking earlier this year. Kitty Allard, School Council and the
Facilities Committee, and I, have been pursuing the company responsible for the current state of the oval
to make good their commitment to its reinstatement. Several Year Five boys have also written to the
company, explaining that the area is unsafe and unsuitable for play.
I am pleased to inform our school community, that next Monday and Tuesday, works will commence on
the oval to level, top-dress and re-seed the surface. Further to this, drainage improvement works will be
carried out. The area will be barricaded to ensure student safety and students will be unable to access that
part of the oval for several weeks while grass grows. We look forward to the beginning of 2013, with an
oval in top condition, ready for summer games!
All the best everyone, stay safe, and have a great weekend!
Chris Finighan
Assistant Principal
About me! I am thoughtful, smart and I can talk to people really easily. I can
sometimes be the last person to try something new, because sometimes I am very
careful about trying new
Hey kids! I’m a new
friend at HEPS and my
name is ’Bug’!! Meet my
feelings Brave, Left Out
& Happy
Do you know any one like me?
Are you ever like me?
How?
You see, I don’t always like things to change too quick. That’s because once upon a
time I was a caterpillar and then surprise , surprise, I turned into… well… me! That
was a bit of a shock! I’m used to it now, but boy I had to be brave at first.
It makes me happy to have all kinds of friends around my house. I live in a
manzanita tree and I have a swimming hole in my living room, with a rope hanging
over it. On hot days, my friends all come over to splash around and drink wildflower
honey smoothies. I don’t like to see anyone left out because I know what that can feel
like. I think it is really interesting that everyone is different! I was different once!
If I see someone being left out, I have learnt all kinds of ways to help them join in.
My favourite thing to say is…’Make room for everyone!’
At night I play the mandolin and dream about where I will travel to in the future. I
have lots of travel books, and I’m really good at reading maps, but do you think I will
ever get brave enough to use my wings? I hope so.
By Bug x
P.S. Come and visit me sometime! I can make room for everyone!
…………………………………………… Hi girls and boys, I enjoyed showing you all our Kimochi’s today at assembly and hope you will enjoy meeting them over the next few weeks The value we are thinking about for the next few weeks is ‘Acceptance’. I wanted you to meet Bug today because he is really good at ‘Acceptance’ and knows a lot about it. He enjoys including others in his play, and isn’t afraid to stand up and say when mean things are said, or when people are left out. He’s pretty good at making new friends too and he knows what to do, and how to get help if he is feeling left out himself. We can learn a lot from Bug! Bye for now, Mrs Finighan.
It’s Bug’s Life!
Can you write a story about Bug?
I would love to receive stories about Bug and how he ‘makes room for
everyone’! Please address them to Bug and drop them into the office !
Hey kids! Can you please
write me a story… about me!
New Asthma Management Guidelines The Asthma Foundation of Victoria advises that spacers should always be used when administering
reliever “puffer” medication because:
. Using a Spacer with a “puffer” ensures that more medication reaches the airways.
. Spacers are much easier for children to use than a “puffer” alone and they allow school staff to
help students during an asthma attack, often in an emergency situation.
. Spacers are an essential part of the Asthma First Aid procedure that Victorian schools are
instructed to follow.
Further, The Asthma Foundation advises that Asthma first aid kits should only ever be used as a
back-up for when a student with asthma does not have their own spacer available, or if it is a first
asthma attack or the cause of breathing difficulty is unknown.
The Asthma Foundation of Victoria new policy of single use spacers means that the schools will
no longer be able to wash, sterilise and re-use spacers and face masks from the asthma emergency
kits when assisting students with asthma symptoms.
Those families who have children who have been diagnosed with Asthma please ensure that
their children have their medication at school and that they also have their own spacer.
A complete set of the guidelines and recommendations from the Asthma Foundation are attached
to this newsletter.
SPORTS UPDATE: Welcome back to term 4. I hope all our HEPS families enjoyed a lovely break. Just
a reminder about a few dates and some date changes. The junior school Athletics
sports day will still be held on Tuesday October 23rd
at HEPS. See Mrs. Hassan if
you’d like to assist in any way. The Middle/Senior school (Gr 3-6) House
Athletics will now be held on Thursday, November 22nd
at Croydon Track
(weather pending). The lacrosse tournament (Gr 6s only – at this stage) will be held
on Friday November 16th
at Benedict Reserve in Scoresby. I am hoping to organise a grade 5 lacrosse
competition at HE Parker in December, but nothing is finalised as yet and it may not go ahead. There will
also be an end of year excursion to Maroondah indoor sports stadium for the grade 5/6s on
Wednesday, 19th December. Permission forms and cost of excursion will be sent home closer to these
dates.
This Thursday, October 11th
at Ringwood track, 6 HEPS students will be participating in the Division
finals in their particular field events. Good luck to Xavier (high jump), Jarrod G (discus), Montana
(triple jump), Alec (discus and shotput), Jera (shotput) and Callum (long jump).
Congratulations to all those HEPS Harriers students who received certificates at the end of Term 3.
Keep up your fitness over Spring and Summer and join HEPS Harriers on Mondays and Thursdays
from 1.40-2.05pm. Looking forward to an increase in the number of students attending now that the
weather is improving.
Our winning District HEPS cricket champions will now be playing the Warrandyte South District
winners (Marlborough PS) in a match to be held on the top oval at HE Parker Res on Friday,
November 2nd
at 9.45 am. Any parent keen to umpire this match (“Kanga 8s”) can speak with me or Mr.
Garvey asap
In the week of Monday October 29th
– Thursday 1st November our lucky HEPS students will be
participating in the “Kilsyth Cobras” basketball clinics over these days. All prep children will receive a
free basketball too!
Enjoy your training and remember to try something new in the form of fun and fitness during this great
weather. I’ll be thinking of you all whilst enjoying the sunshine in Thailand! Rosie Lumsden PE/Sports Coordinator.

HEATHMONT EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL CALENDAR - TERM - 4 2012
Living Well with Asthma: Advice for Parents and Carers 1 in 10 people in Australia have asthma, and people with asthma often rate their health a lot worse and report a poorer quality of
life than the general population. Children and adolescents with current asthma are more likely to miss days of school/preschool due
to asthma and a key aspect of improving quality of life is ensuring that your child or teenager is are able to engage fully in physical
activity and social aspects of life and learning.
Good asthma control is:
Symptom free during the day and during physical exercise, reducing the need for reliever medication
Symptom free at night, allowing for a good night’s rest
Rarely experiencing asthma attacks or exacerbations
Preventer medication and devices are being used correctly and as prescribed (eg. on a daily basis)
Having an asthma action plan to follow, both for the school/preschool and at home, and promptly acting on the plan
when asthma symptoms occur
Asthma symptoms are not a normal aspect of life and should be taken seriously. Children and teenagers with poor asthma control
should be encouraged to seek assistance, and should visit their GP or respiratory physician for an asthma review as soon as
possible.
For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email [email protected]
Spacer Use in Schools/Preschools: Advice for Parents & Carers As of the 1
st July 2012, schools and preschools in Victoria will be implementing a new policy in regards to single person spacer
use.
This means that schools and preschools will no longer be able to wash, sterilise and re-use spacers and face masks from their
asthma emergency kits when assisting students and children with asthma symptoms.
Spacers should always be used when administering reliever ‘puffer’ medication because:
Using a spacer with a ‘puffer’ ensures that more medication reaches the airways
Spacers are much easier for children to use than a ‘puffer’ alone, and allows school and preschool staff to help students/children during an asthma attack, often in an emergency situation
Spacers are an essential part of the Asthma First Aid procedure that Victorian schools/preschools are instructed to follow
Asthma first aid kits should only ever be used as a back-up for when a child with asthma does not have their own spacer available, or if it is a first asthma attack or the cause of breathing difficulty is unknown. Your child’s school/preschool may implement a policy where parents/carers are responsible for the cost of the spacer if one must be used from the asthma emergency kit. Even if your child has mild asthma, it is essential that their medication and spacer (and a compatible face mask if under 5 years old)
is always available to school/preschool staff. To ensure that a spacer is not left at home, we would recommend that parents/carers
purchase a second spacer for their child to have with them at school/preschool at all times if possible.
For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email [email protected]
