AIM HIGH @ HEPS DEAR PARENTS,

A LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

The announcement by the Victorian and Federal Governments to provide an additional

$12.2 billion dollars to Victorian schools from next year to 2019 is historic.

It allows for funding to grow at an average of 4 per cent per student each year, and

provides six years of funding certainty against which schools can better plan.

It also commits the Commonwealth to amend the Australian Education Act 2013 to

reduce its power to unilaterally set education policy and intervene in the operation of

schools.

We are well advanced in finalising Victoria’s ambitious plans to reach the global top

tier in educational performance as set out in Towards Victoria as a Learning Community and the forthcoming New

Directions for Teaching and School Leadership.

This agreement will support our plans by giving schools extra resources to implement their improvement strategies.

It can’t be stressed too much that the additional funds are being provided to improve student learning, not to

support business as usual. Higher budgets will come with higher expectations.

We are being asked what this money will be used for. This answer will be different for each school. For some

primary schools, the priority might be to hire maths and science specialists. For other schools, a new system of

teacher observation may be needed to raising teaching standards. In rural schools, it may fund the sharing of expert

teaching resources. It may fund research on the learning gains of a school’s students that will inform individual

learning plans.

These are decisions that schools will take in seeking to achieve the school improvement expectations of their

communities and of the Department.

In the short term, funding of our schools will work as it always has. The current funding models will be used to

allocate funds for 2014, with a healthy growth in per-student rates.

Page 2: HEATHMONT EAST PRIMARY SCHOOLassets.heathmonteastps.vic.edu.au/media/newsletters/2013/Fortnight... · HEATHMONT EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL ... See you again soon and remember children to

Through 2013 and the first half of 2014, Victoria will consult with government school stakeholders and negotiate

with the Commonwealth and non-government sectors to develop a long-term funding roadmap to better target

resources to student need.

This means that funding growth will be reasonably uniform in 2014 for schools whose enrolment numbers and mix

stay the same. What schools get after 2014 will depend on changes both to their student profile and to the allocation

models

A LETTER FROM MRS FINIGHAN

Please find a message below from Chris; I’m sure you will be impressed with her exploits thus far. She writes a

great story about her experiences in Africa of which I have inserted a very short excerpt. Read and enjoy!

Dear HEPS children, staff and parents,

I do hope you are all well and happy.

My husband, daughter and I are having a wonderful holiday here in Africa!

After an hour of hiking, we heard an enormous 'Boom!' The thud

reverberated through the ground under our feet. It sounded like an explosion,

but that surely couldn't be. Not out here in the wilderness of Kibale Forest, a

Ugandan national park of 795 square kilometres. Perhaps an elephant had

knocked over a huge tree that it had been working on for a few days. Does an

elephant have the required strength to push over a tree that large?

While we were all wondering what made the sound, our informative local guide, Africano, quietly explained that it

was the lead chimpanzee male. Being four times the strength of a large human male, he uses the power in his

mighty arm to belt the hollow trunks of particular favourite and massive trees, thereby communicating his

whereabouts to the troop. Africano moved us in the direction of the sound and suddenly stopped, looked over his

shoulder and ordered, 'Move quickly!' I don't know what happened, maybe my adrenalin kicked in; my tummy

problems vanished.

For just a few minutes, we followed Africano as quickly as we could along the forest floor, hopping over vines,

cracking dry and dusty branches underfoot, and sending slender saplings flying and slapping into the person behind

us! Emma was up the front and saw the large chimp loping along the ground before it climbed into the creamy

coloured limbs of a tall, outstretched and fruitful fig tree.

We spent over an hour moving around that tree and watched the small group. The largest of them was the

drumming male of 36 years. We were paid for our patience with special moments that enthralled. A youngster of

six or seven years ate figs and played in the branches, on occasions seeming to just enjoy swinging and climbing to

pass the time. A female rested and ate peacefully, and then as we all continued to crane our necks skyward, we

were thrilled to see the large male swing effortlessly along the high branches by his hands and we all exclaimed in

unison at the sight. After some time, another young chimp joined them and on it went. On the way back we saw

another group of five chimps lazing and playing away the late afternoon sun. Oh the complete joy of seeing these

close cousins thriving and free in the wilds of their native Uganda!

Watching the humans was almost as entertaining as watching the chimps. I smiled to myself at the sight of fifteen

completely enthralled photographers, side by side like sardines in a can, or like a school of fish in profile; cameras

all pointed intently in the same direction, clicking madly. Would have made a great picture if I'd had a camera!

Then there were the stayers, and the satisfied. Some people looked like they would have stayed for hours to catch a

'sometimes' glimpse of chimp antics. A teenage girl in contrast, leant on her mum, looking like she was waiting for

the church service to end so she could go home and get on Facebook. And that's where I'm at this morning!

Driving on the dirt bush roads, through many, many villages has been hard to endure. We have all been in constant

fear for the lives of pedestrians everywhere. Most Ugandans - 30 million in total - are on foot or bike. Children

hover next to the roadside in groups, unaccompanied, and nervous mothers with babies on their backs and their

other little ones in tow are everywhere.

Take care everyone! I do miss your faces and company of my HEPS friends.

See you again soon and remember children to keep aiming high!

Bye for now, Christine

STUDENT ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL SURVEY

You will be pleased to know that our students in grades 5 and 6 have ranked their school, HEPS, above State and

Region schools in most categories of Student Relationships, Teaching and Learning and Well Being. I was

especially pleased that the students ranked Student Motivation, Student Learning and Teacher Effectiveness

particularly high.

HOUSE ATHLETICS SPORTS

Thank you to Rhandi Arthur for organizing the athletic sports, a huge task,

particularly when the weather chooses not to cooperate. The students benefitted from

the wonderful opportunity to perform at their physical best and hopefully enjoy the

challenge as well as gains in fitness. Congratulations to Gold House for being the

outright champions.

2014 PREP AND FUTURE CLASS ORIENTATION PROGRAM

It is lovely to observe our pre-schoolers enjoying the activities provided this term to familiarize

them with the primary school environment. Visits to the prep classrooms, the Art room on

Wednesday and LOTE/Japanese the week before were great experiences.

We will commence our Transition program for our current students in Preps – 6 starting next

week whereby the students will visit a new classroom and experience an activity intended for

students in the year above. This is designed to prepare them for the year of learning that follows

and help our teachers construct classes for 2014.

MS SUTTON INJURED

On Friday 9th August, that wet, wet day, Ms Sutton slipped and fell on her way to the art room.

Although in good spirits she suffered a fractured ankle which required surgery (performed last

Tuesday). We wish Janine a speedy recovery and look forward to her return.

THE HEPS BAND PERFORMS

Our Band will again perform for one of our local kinders; this will be the third kinder to which our

students have shared their talents and their instruments. I know they love performing and mixing

with the kinder children who are usually a great audience. Thanks Miss Yeates and our musical

students!

SOMERS CAMP

Twelve of our grades 5/6 students were waved off from Marlborough Primary School last Tuesday. Already

classes are receiving letters from their peers and I’m sure they are enjoying a fabulous time mixing with students

from around the state and participating in a multitude of exciting and adventurous activities.

FETE – HEPS CARNIVAL

Although 85 days away, I must commend the fantastic team coordinating the fete.

Regular meetings, sleepless nights and yet they continue to be enthusiastic and

brimming with yet more ideas; this fete on November the 9th promises to be the best

ever! I also know that they cannot bring their ideas to fruition without your support

so thank you to our stall holders and parents that have committed to helping out on

the day. Make sure you keep this date free!

REMINDER Thursday 19

th September is a ‘footy dress’ or ‘favourite sport dress’

day in exchange for a gold coin which will support activities and stalls at the fete. Please encourage

your children to dress up, be proud of their teams and enjoy a sporting day as we near the AFL grand

final.

END OF TERM

Our students will be dismissed on Friday 20th September at 2.30pm after a short assembly at the front of the school.

GOOD BYE AND KEEP WELL

This will be the last newsletter that I address this term. As you would be

aware I start my Long Service Leave on Monday 26th August and will visit

various parts of Europe including the UK, The Netherlands, France, Italy and

Russia. Sue Fraser will be the Acting Principal for the remainder of this term;

Cameron Agars will continue the role of Acting Assistant Principal. I have

great confidence in the staff at HEPS and know that the school is in great

hands. I hope they want me back when I return! Before leaving I do wish to

‘thank’ everyone in the school community for their contribution to making this

a magnificent school. It is a real honour and privilege to lead such a great

community and to support our students in becoming well adjusted, productive

and constructive members of our world.

Kind regards and see you next term,

Kitty Allard

Principal

Sport Update: On Wednesday 7th August, 2013 twenty four of our HEPS students went to Knox

Basketball Stadium to play in an all-day round robin basketball tournament called

McDonald’s HOOP Time.

HEPS had one All Stars team and two Future Stars teams. The teams were made

up students in grade 5 and 6. The All Stars team included; Sam, Xavier, Logan,

Tom, Liam, Daniel, Jarrod and Max. The first Future Stars team included; Maddy, Breanna, Chris,

Brodie, Ethan, Majeed, Connor and Aidan. The second Future Stars team included; Skyla, Juliette,

Tarni, Samuel, Damon, Alec, Dom and Sam.

All of our basketball ball stars were amazing and showed incredible sportsmanship during the day.

The All Stars team placed first in their competition. The two Future Stars teams played each

other in an exciting final round, placing first and second at their level. All three teams will advance

to the next level of competition. WOW!!

What a fantastic day and HEPS is very proud of your effort!

Thank you to Mr. Agars and the parent volunteers to help make this day possible. We are looking

forward to the Junior HOOP Time coming up in September!

This term I am running a Social Skills program “STARS”

I would like to share with you a small excerpt from our first session.

“The Power of Words”

Our words have power even though our tongue is small. Think about the following:

1. A small rudder makes a massive ship turn wherever the captain wants it to go. Our tongue though small compared with our whole body can steer us to speak in a good way or bad way.

2. A forest can be set on fire by one small spark; a lot of damage is done. Our tongue is like this: one small comment can do great harm (or great good!)

So we have to learn to:

“Tame the tongue”

Ask yourself: Are my words good, kind, helpful? Or Are my words mean, unkind and unhelpful? Remember: “I’m in control of “my” tongue; nobody else is!”

Libby (chaplain)
