Was I having a nightmare? Was I just watching too many reruns of The
Twilight Zone? Maybe taking the Halloween spirit too far? No – it simply
occurred to me that you might not have a solid backup and disaster
recovery plan in place!
And if your server data was erased, corrupted or destroyed because of a
hardware malfunction, system crash, fire, flood or
some other random, unforeseen disaster, you might
not be able to be back up and running again FAST!
The Thought Of That Happening Scared Me Half
To Death!
And quite honestly, it should scare you too! Just
imagine what would happen if your server went
down and you…
… Lost all accounting documentation and history…
… Lost all the work files you’ve spent YEARS developing…
… Lost the work files and documentation you desperately need to
service your customers…
… Lost all the e-mails you’ve saved and couldn’t access your inbox…
Can you even put a price tag on it? Probably not, yet so many business
owners aren’t 100% certain that they could be back up and running
after a disaster or are purely hoping that their current backup system is
working and storing a usable copy of their data.
Want to know for sure if your data is safe? Our FREE Data Security
Analysis will reveal the truth… Since Halloween is this month, I’m
treating all of my friends, clients and prospective clients to this $300
service at no charge. That’s right… FREE! Go to www.CMITDenver.com/

Phil’s In The Corner
This article is landing in your
inbox two weeks before my
United flight lands in Israel. It has
been over 30 years since the first
and only time that I had been to
Israel. I was entering my senior
year of high school which means
that I was the same age that my
son Daniel is now.
The excitement, curiosity and the
experience will be very different.
Last time I was a 17 year old with
limited travel experience. Now, I
am a 50 year old who has traveled
to many continents for business
and pleasure which includes
taking my family to Italy in 2009.
I hope to experience the awe and
excitement upon my return to
Israel that my children had during
their first trip abroad.
The tour will present to me the
history of a land and its people
through new lenses (much thicker
lenses) that will cause me to think
about my place in this world. I
guess that age can do that to you.
Imagine if someone from 1981
before the great onslaught of
technology were able to foresee
the kind of fast-paced,
interconnected world that we live
in today. Wow!

Last year in the October 2013 newsletter we wrote about the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and touted the advances of it over the original Pro version. Well, like most technology gadgets including tablets and smartphones, a newer and better version comes out regularly. This happens regardless of the manufacturer for they all do it—Microsoft, Apple, and Samsung. Microsoft promotes the Surface Pro 3 as a laptop replacement. Those of us who use a Surface Pro tablet would agree and sing its praises. The Surface user is able to use USB devices to attach to it as well as connect to a larger video monitor. The functional flexibility demonstrates that it is a true laptop replacement. Apple is selling its newest phone, the 6 and 6+ versions like hotcakes. At our local Verizon store, you have to wait up to a month for most of the SKUs of the iPhone 6 (e.g. 64 GB version). People love the hundreds of thousands of apps that are available and with Apple it always comes back to the experience. Samsung had higher market share with its Google OS smartphone than Apple and it continues to be strong. It introduced the Galaxy Note which is a hybrid of a smartphone and handheld tablet. It’s pretty cool even though it won’t fit in your shirt or pants pockets. It’s up to you—your brand preferences, business functionality and whatever your trusted advisor says.
Technology Onslaught
Viva Italia! Torino (or Turin as known to the English-speaking crowd) is a city in
northwest Italy in the Piemontese
region. It has a million citizens and
is adjacent to the Alps. Its original
inhabitants (in pre-Roman times)
were ancient Celt-Ligurian people.
Torino means “little bull.” It has
been occupied or controlled by the
Romans, Franks, and French until
Italy became a unified country in
1861.
Torino hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Shiny New Gadget Of The Month:
Solid Strategies = Solid Success
More and more people are moving
away from subscribing to cable or
satellite. They are finding entertain-
ment alternatives such as this Roku
3 Streaming Media Player.
The Roku player makes it easy
to enjoy the most popular movies,
TV shows, music, and games on
your TV. You can access hundreds
of free channels as well as subscrip-
tion services like Netflix and Hulu
Plus.
For most of you who have cable TV,
you can watch on-demand movies
and original shows by HBO, Show-
time, ESPN, Disney, Fox, A&E and
the History Channel. So, what are
the costs with what seems to be a
great gadget and service? There is
no cost or monthly fee from Roku;
however, if you use content from
some of the channel partners there
may be charges.
If there aren’t costs from Roku asso-
ciated with the content, there must
be costs for the player. Yes. The one
-time cost for a Roku device ranges
from $49.99 for the Streaming Stick
to $99.99 for the Roku 3 streaming
media player.
compare ).
Any device comes with a 30 day
money back guarantee and there are
tutorials to help you get started.
Success results from a solid strategy. Even the greatest ideas are of little value unless they
are backed up by a practical and workable plan of action. The word strategy
comes from an ancient Greek term that literally means to be a general, leading troops into
battle. Setting up a good strategic plan involves 5 steps:
The first step is to translate your vision into measurable and achievable goals.
You decide specifically what you want to accomplish during the next five to ten years —
those are your long-range goals. Next, you break those goals down into intermediate goals
— things you wish to accomplish during the next six months or year. Then you break them
down further into short-term goals covering the next month or six weeks.
The second step is to break your goals down into achievable objectives. Dr. Robert
Schuller says, “Yard by yard life is hard, inch by inch it’s a cinch.” Working by objectives
helps you concentrate on what’s important, instead of spinning your wheels on those things
that seem urgent but don’t lead to your long-term goals. Objectives add purpose and
direction to all your activities.
The third step is to set up your strategies for accomplishing your objectives. Strategies
are the specific ways you will go about achieving your objectives. The more clearly thought-
out they are, the more effective they will be.
Fourth, you choose each task you must complete each day to achieve your goals. This
is where most planning breaks down. We tend to leave it vague — thinking that, as long as
we are working hard all the time, we are achieving our goals. Most people I talk with are
extremely busy — and most of them are working hard to do things right. The problem is
they are not doing enough of the right things — the things that will help them achieve
their goals.
It is not enough to merely list each task you need to do; you need to build the tasks
into your schedule. So many hours each day should be dedicated to working on specific
actions that will lead to accomplishing your definite objectives.
And, finally, build in the monitoring mechanisms that will help you keep track of
your progress toward implementing your plan. It’s one thing to have a “gut-level feeling”
that you must be doing something right because you are always working
hard. But it is far better to design simple mechanisms to let you know precisely how much
progress you are making.
Look for a few key indicators that will help you stay on track, and monitor those like a
doctor would monitor the vital signs of a patient. It doesn’t matter how much activity
is going on. What matters is how successful you are in achieving your objectives.
One good example would be that you would target to contact three people each day to
generate new business. At the end of the day, you’d know whether you have achieved that
goal. Your plan is not complete until it has been communicated satisfactorily to every
person in your organization who must help to implement it.
Dr. Nido Qubein is president of High Point University, an undergraduate and graduate
institution with 4,300 students from 40 countries. He has authored two dozen books and
audio programs distributed worldwide. As a business leader, he is chairman of the Great
Harvest Bread Company, with 220 stores in 43 states. He serves on the boards of several
national organizations, including BB&T (a Fortune 500 company with $185 billion in
assets), the La-Z-Boy Corporation (one of the largest and most recognized furniture brands
worldwide) and Dots Stores (a chain of fashion boutiques with more than 400 locations
across the country). As a professional speaker, Dr. Qubein has received many distinctions,
including the Golden Gavel Medal, induction into the International Speaker Hall of Fame
and as the founder of the NSA Foundation in Arizona.

Insights From Our Past To
Apply To The Present & Future
Plato 427—347 BCE
Our person of the month is Plato. He hailed from Greece and was a student of Socrates and teacher to Aristotle. Plato was the founder of the Academy from which many leaders centu-ries later including Lorenzo de’Medici based their educa-tion. He wrote The Republic. “The direction in which education starts a man
will determine his future in life.”
Most are unaware that Plato comes from a rich heritage of kinds and statesmen. Yet, he never took this for granted.
“Good actions give strength to ourselves
and inspire good actions in others.”
After Socrates’ execution, Plato traveled for 12 years including studying math in Italy.
“Good people do not need laws to tell them to
act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.
Call From Microsoft Support
May Be A Trick A week ago CMIT Solutions sent out its weekly QuickTip email.
The topic was “How to identify a fraudulent Microsoft support call, and
what to do if you receive one.” It’s scary to think that this could happen to
you. Well, a relative of mine shared the story below of her own experience
which demonstrates that it could happen to you too.
Hi Deb -
I actually got one of these calls early one morning. I had been
Googling the night before and clicked on a strange website. After
I got the call the next morning, I thought maybe it was because of that.
Anyway, his accent raised red flags from the get go. He said he was from
Microsoft and there's something wrong with my computer. I
hung up on him right after he said we“ "need you to turn on your
computer". Thank you for doing a news item on this. I'm relieved to hear
about it from an expert. Didn't realize how long it's been going on. It felt
really icky getting the call, like I was being tele-burglarized!!
What should you do if you receive one of these phone-based phishing
attempts?
Do not install third-party remote client software and/or provide login details to an unverified caller
Ask if there’s a cost associated with the “service” the caller is offering — if there is, hang up
Never agree to purchase any services or software
Never share your credit card or personal information. Take down the caller’s number, name, company, etc. and report it immediately to the
FBI, the FTC, or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
If you think you’ve downloaded any malicious software or allowed a
scammer access to your computer, here’s what you should do:
Change the passwords for your computer, your email accounts, and your financial accounts — particularly your bank account and credit card
Call your trusted IT provider and inform them of the scam attempt so they can assess the health and security of your system
Consider the kind of anti-virus, anti-malware, and network security options
in which CMIT Solutions specializes.
The bottom line? Microsoft will very rarely call you directly — and they’ll
never try and charge you ANYTHING if they do. If a serious issue does need
to be addressed, more than likely a Microsoft Silver Partner like CMIT Solu-
tions of Denver would contact you on behalf of the company.

FREE—A New Meaning
There are choices when it comes to pedometers as well as choices when you select a
technology partner. Just as the medical experts agree that an adult should exercise five
days a week with at least 20 minutes of walking (or thereabouts), CMIT Solutions of Denver
believes wholeheartedly that a business should be on a proactively managed wellness
program like CMIT Marathon.
A business owner wants the best for his/her company and hopefully wants the same for
their peers and their sphere of influence. So, take this opportunity to introduce a business
of 10 or more computer users to CMIT Denver to receive a Network Health Check (a $497
value) and you will have done a good deed. Upon completing this “exam”, we will rush you
a Fitbit of your choice to help keep your health in check and thank you for your referral.
With All The Choices For A Ramped Up Pedometer, How Do
You Decide Which One Is Best For You?
CMIT Solutions of Denver focuses on keeping the technology infrastructure of its clients healthy. Part of
this is achieved via our role as vCIO or technology partner and consultant. One of the technology areas
that we support is Communication. This
includes internet, telephony, and cellular.
For the purposes of this article, we will
focus on our hosted VoIP solution and
how our clients can have an almost imme-
diate benefit.
The FREE Money Program can save our
clients money. This is how it works:
1. CMIT will collect phone bills for the past 2-3 months from our clients.
2. Our telephony partner will review those bills with us and determine if a particular client will immedi-
ately benefit financially from our hosted VoIP solution.
3. CMIT will provide this client with a price quote.
Benefits to our clients for participating in the FREE Money Program:
1. Free Money. Some of our clients could be presented with the opportunity to reduce their telephony
expenses and improve their functionality.
2. Easy. CMIT and our telephony partner will do the leg work which includes the billing analysis, price
quoting and product demo.
Get started now—no time or money to waste. Call Debi at CMIT Solutions at 303-756-2648 for a

The most popular type of home-baked cookie is the
Chocolate Chip cookie.
Over -mixing the dough or adding too much flour can
result in hard, tough
cookies.
The first animal crackers were produced in the United
the market in 1902.
The modern version of the Fig Newton was created in
1891 and is named for the
city of Newton,
Massachusetts.
The Oreo cookie was invented in 1912.
Ladyfingers are used in tiramisu because the cookies
so readily absorb the sweet
syrup and liqueur used to
make the traditional Italian
dessert.
While Italians use the word
of cookies, Americans think
cookies that are served with
hot drinks for dunking. The
meaning cooked. Baking the
cookies twice results in their
hard, crumbly texture.
Happy New Year—Now Get Moving
Last week my family and I welcomed in the
Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah—Year 5775.
That’s a lot of history to reflect upon. The main
sermon was about time—being cognizant of the
past and looking into the future. Our Rabbi
polled everyone as to who was wearing digital
watches and who was wearing watches with a
face. You know, the “old fashioned” look. I was caught with
my Polar sport digital watch while my husband Phil had a
face watch (even though it’s digital underneath). The Rabbi
observed that with a digital watch, you can only see the Now,
the exact time. With a face watch, you can see when you started
an activity (i.e. the past) and look ahead to when it will be over
or complete (i.e. the future). The message was that we need to
be aware of our past and look forward
or be excited about the future. The
next day I wore my Seiko watch that
I’ve had since 1990 so I wore a bit of
my past.
Our past provides insights or fore-
shadowing into our future. Actions of
our past and the way we look at life
often contributes to or defines how we
act now and possibly down the road.
My 12th grade son wrote an essay for
the Common App for college and it
talked about failure, learning from it and moving beyond it to a
brighter and more successful future. While I read it, I could see
that he had done exactly what he had written. It wasn’t imag-
ined nor an unfulfilled goal. He has moved himself into a posi-
tion to finish high school in better standing and to be recruited
by a college to play football. It clicked for him. I am a proud
mamma.
Our featured person of the month, Plato, wrote, “The begin-
ning is the most important part of the work.” Once you em-
bark on a new path of improvement, the momentum and habit
building

will almost always yield rewards, especially with the mind-
set and fortitude to move onward. I know that our 7 month
old puppy appreciates my renewed vigor.
I had fallen off that proverbial bike when it came to my
walking regimen and prompted by the new year (the timing
was right), I got back on the “bike” and have walked every
day since. Most experts say that it takes at least 21 days for a
habit to be formed and followed.
Plato also wrote “Better a little which is well done, than a
great deal imperfectly.” The often-quoted Mary Poppins
complemented Plato by stating that “Well begun is half
done.”
You don’t need a religious or secular new year to serve as a
reason or excuse for getting back on track and moving on
with your necessary tasks. Make sure that you have a
written goal and track your progress. This is akin to project
management in that a milestone must be met before moving
on to the next step and goal.
