Sure, you sometimes have to ask peopleto repeat themselves, and the volume knobon the car stereo is set much farther to theright than it used to be. But you can't beexperiencing hearing loss - you're not a sen-ior citizen. Hearing loss only affects the old,right?

Not necessarily. "Only 40 percent ofpeople with hearing loss are older than 64,"says Dr. Sergei Kochkin, executive directorof the Better Hearing Institute inWashington, D.C. "The largest age groupwith hearing loss is people between 18 and64 - about 19 million people compared to14 million at retirement age. More than 1million school-age children have hearingproblems, as well."

The idea that hearing loss only happensto the aged - and is an unavoidable circum-stance of aging - is just one of many com-monly believed myths about the issue. Thetruth is that hearing loss affects all agegroups. If you want to avoid hearing loss, itpays to know the truth behind the mythsand the basics of hearing loss prevention.

Here are some common myths abouthearing loss, and the truth behind themyths:

Myth: If I had hearing loss, my familydoctor would have told me.

Truth: Only 15 percent of doctors rou-tinely screen for hearing loss during a phys-ical exam. Even when a doctor does screenfor hearing problems, the results may besuspect since most people with hearingproblems hear pretty well in quiet environ-ments - like a doctor's office. Without spe-cial training on hearing loss, it may be diffi-cult for your family doctor to even realizeyou have a hearing problem.

Myth: Nothing can be done about myhearing loss.

Truth: People with hearing loss in oneear, with a high-frequency hearing loss, orwith nerve damage may have been told bytheir family doctor that nothing can bedone to help. Modern technology haschanged that. Now, nearly 95 percent ofpeople with hearing loss can be helped,most with hearing aids.

Myth: Only people with serious hearingloss need hearing aids.

Truth: Your lifestyle, your need forrefined hearing and the degree of your hear-ing loss will determine whether you need ahearing aid. If you're in a profession thatrelies on your ability to discern the nuances

of human conversation - such as a lawyer,teacher or group psychotherapist - evenmild hearing loss can interfere with yourlife.

Myth: Hearing aids are big and ugly.Wearing one will make me look old or dis-abled.

Truth: Untreated hearing loss is farmore noticeable than today's hearing aids.If you miss the punch line of a joke, orrespond inappropriately to a comment orquestion, people may wonder about yourmental capacity. Hearing aid makers realizepeople are concerned about how they willlook wearing a hearing aid. Today, you canfind miniature hearing aids that fit totallywithin the ear canal or behind your ear,making them virtually invisible.

Myth: Hearing loss is an inevitable partof growing older and there's nothing I cando to prevent it from happening to me.

Truth: You can take steps to preventhearing loss. Noise is one of the most com-mon causes of hearing loss; 10 millionAmericans have already suffered irreversibledamage to their hearing from noise. Yet athird of all hearing loss could be preventedwith proper ear protection.

Myth: I cannot afford hearing aidsTruth: There is a wide price range in

hearing aids on the market just like there isfor other consumer products. In additionthe BHI has identified close to 100 sourcesfor financial help in their eGuide "YourGuide to Financial Assistance with HearingAids."

If you work in a high-risk profession,make sure your hearing is protected accord-ing to OSHA regulations, and wear hearingprotection such as foam or silicone plugs orearmuffs. At home, lower the volume on theTV, radio, stereo and any device that usesearbuds or headphones. Wear ear protectionwhile mowing the lawn or blowing leaves orsnow. Buy quieter products (compare deci-bel ratings) and reduce the number of noisyappliances running at the same time in yourhome. Before taking a new medicine, besure to ask the doctor about any possibleside effects on your hearing.

• Eat local, organic foods. By makingsure that you are purchasing locally grown,organic foods, you are also reducing theamount of energy it takes to transport thefood to your area. "If everyone in the United Statespledged to give up bottled water for justone month it could save more than 5 bil-lion bottles," says Josh Dorfman, environ-mental activist, TV host and author of"The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget:Save Money. Save Time. Save the Planet."

• Eat more fruits and vegetables. Thehealth benefits of increasing the amount ofvegetables in your diet are well-document-ed, as vegetables are a low-fat, low-caloriesource of essential nutrients. But did you

know that when you eat less meat andmore vegetables, you're also reducing yourcarbon footprint?

According to a 2008 EconomicInformation Bulletin from the USDA, thefood market produces hundreds of poundsof meat each year per American to meetdemand - an amount that has not beengood for our nation's waistlines. The pro-duction of meat uses many more resourcesthan fruits and veggies, which is whyDorfman recommends going meatless atleast one day a week. For a fun and healthyway to learn more about how your food issourced, ride a bike or jog over to a localfarmer market.

• Power of the pedal, or your feet. Onyour way to becoming healthier, you'resure to include exercise in your plan.Sometimes though, exercising can have agreater purpose than just working yourmuscles and improving cardiovascularhealth.

Consider including daily chores intoyour workout plan, as it will help you fitin your workout while also leaving yourcar on the curb. Bike or walk to the gro-cery store to do your weekly shopping.

The abundance of treats duringthe holidays can make it a challengefor men to watch their waistlines andstay consistent with their diets, whichcan be especially dangerous for menwith diabetes. That is why the holidayseason is an important time for thesemen to get informed about the otherhealth issues that can come with theirdisease. According to data from theAmerican Diabetes Association,approximately 12 million men in theUnited States have diabetes, and manyof these men do not realize that theymay be at risk for other serious condi-tions.

Research has shown that men suf-fering from diabetes may be atincreased risk for a condition calledhypogonadism, more commonlyknown as low testosterone. This isbecause men with diabetes have lowerlevels of testosterone than those with-out diabetes.

Hypogonadism affects up to 4 mil-lion men in the U.S., most of whomremain untreated because its signs and

symptoms are often attributed to nor-mal aging. These men may experiencesymptoms such as sexual dysfunction,decreased sexual desire, decreased mus-cle mass, loss of body hair, low spermcount, and decreased bone mineraldensity.

"Studies have shown that men withdiabetes are twice as likely to have lowtestosterone as men without diabetes,"says Dr. Helena Rodbard, past-presi-dent of the American College ofEndocrinology (ACE), and past-presi-dent of the American Association ofClinical Endocrinologists (AACE). "Itis vitally important for men with dia-betes to visit their doctors to discussthe condition and potential risk fac-tors."

Natural gas has become a major sourceof fuel in the United States today, in partbecause of a controversial drilling practicethat is earning a great deal of attention inthe news: hydraulic fracturing, better knowas "fracking." But as fracking has expand-ed, so too have concerns about its potentialimpact on American's clean drinking watersupplies.

Hydraulic fracturing is used in about90 percent of U.S. natural gas and oilwells. During fracking, pressurized andchemically treated water is used to frag-ment shale rock to get to natural gas. Thisprocess can threaten water quality if thefracking fluids leak into groundwater orare spilled in their handling above ground.

Because fracking is currently exemptfrom federal regulation under the Safe

Drinking Water Act, drillers do not haveto disclose what is contained in their frack-ing fluids. But several of the chemicalsknown to be concentrated from the under-ground gas wells during the frackingprocess are considered toxic, such as ben-zene and methane, and are known to causehealth issues when exposure is too high.

Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wyoming andTexas are just some of the states wherefracking has been linked to contaminatedwater and illnesses. In the midst of contin-uing public debate over how to manageand regulate an important natural resourcewhile protecting the safety of water sup-plies, the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency has announced plans to release astudy in 2012 on the impact of fracking

on drinking water."While there are still many questions

about the problems created by fracking, itis so important to not take your waterquality for granted," says Jerome Kovach,vice president of research and developmentat Kinetico, a leading manufacturer ofwater treatment products. "The nationalnews on this issue should serve as areminder for homeowners to know if theirwater is clean and safe - and if there arequestions, to get it tested."

Many pollutants from gas drilling haveobvious odors and tastes, but Kovach saysmany contaminants don't have such clearindicators. He encourages homeowners tobe vigilant in making sure their drinkingwater is safe for their family.

Many local water treatment profession-als, like those who repre-sent Kinetico, offer basicin-home testing for free.Their basic water analysesinclude testing for hard-ness, chlorine, total dis-solved solids, iron andmeasuring the pH value.Expanded water testsshould look for chemicalsassociated with fracking,such as benzene, methane,barium and chloride. Forthis greater level of detailon the water's quality,dealers can collect samplesfor a more in-depth wateranalysis conducted by athird-party laboratory.

"Homeowners who areclose to natural gas

drilling and who are wary about whatcould be in their water should get theirwater tested immediately," says Kovach."They'll be able to rest easier when theyknow all is well or can take steps toimprove the quality of their water."

After testing, if problems are present,Kovach recommends looking for a watertreatment system that has been certified toan ANSI/NSF standard by an ANSIapproved laboratory. These certified third-party laboratories rigorously test productsand audit production facilities to ensureproducts perform as claimed.
