Lee Marquis, Editor
Welcome...There’s no denying the picturesque beauty of Wanstead Park Whether it be a snow-covered scene with children playing in front of The Temple enclosure, or the serenity one of the park’s five lakes on a winter’s morning, the aesthetics of nature are hard to beat For the Wanstead Parklands Community Project (WPCP), historical photographs and contemporary images are an important aid in their quest to fully understand the park’s history and to safeguard its long-term future
Everyday photographs, however, do not always tell the full story In the world of archeology, being able to see through the cloak of vegetation and below the surface is vital To this end, the WPCP have been making use of modern imaging technologies to further their knowledge of the park’s history and examples of this work are shown on pages 12-13
Studying old photographs can be useful in many areas of research On the other side of the coin, there is a need for people to document the world around them so that such records exist in the first place What may seem insignificant moments at the time may become important records for future generations to look back on Just as the WPCP are grateful for the historical images of Wanstead Park, so too will be future historians for the efforts of modern day photographers who take time to document our daily lives Two such photographers have been doing just that in Wanstead Turn to pages 30-31 to view their montage of life on and around the High Street
The year ahead is likely to be as tough as ever for the shops of Wanstead High Street, and the challenge for local businesses to keep local shoppers engaged is as important as it has ever been Turn to page 38 to find out how the recently released Wanstead Village App is attempting to tackle this challenge and help local businesses ensure they have a happy and prosperous New Year

Sustainable transport charity Sustrans is encouraging adults in Wanstead to make short journeys by bike As part of the Biking Borough initiative – a TfL funded project – Sustrans will be running courses to help those who may not have cycled for a long time to get active and get back on their bike
The courses, which begin next month, will be scheduled to suit the availability of attendees and will focus on building confidence on the road,
basic cycling skills and road safety “We want to encourage residents to make short journeys by bike, giving them
the opportunity to shop locally and help ease congestion in their community,” explains Emilie Charlesworth,
cycling promotion officer for the charity To book a free place on one of the courses call 07584 078 744
Local residents encouraged to get on their bikes in 2012
Community fundA new fund to help support the voluntary sector has been established The Redbridge Community Fund – which has a total of £200,000 at its disposal – has been set up to help organisations deliver community-led initiatives throughout the borough to improve the social, environmental and economic well-being of residents Redbridge-based voluntary and community groups can bid for the money as of next month by downloading an application pack from the council’s website, redbridge.gov.uk
A legal challenge to overturn Home Office plans to amend the Epping Forest Act – which protects Wanstead Flats and would otherwise prevent the construction of a police Muster Briefing and Deployment Centre on the site – was rejected by the courts last month In response to this, the ‘Save Wanstead Flats’ campaign will be holding a meeting at 7pm on 18 January at Durning Hall Community Centre in Forest Gate to discuss the issues and to look at how best to prevent a similar use of the Flats in the future

Since it was formed in 2005, one of the main objectives of the WPCP has been to carry out original research into the history of
Wanstead Park. One of our main contributions has been through undertaking a rolling programme of archaeological investigation in conjunction with the West Essex Archaeological Group (WEAG). Our Heritage Lottery Fund bid will involve extending this work and, perhaps, take it in new directions.
Wanstead Park isn’t just a paradise for dog-walkers and birdwatchers, but an important archaeological hotspot It has a remarkable history that encompasses an unusual variety of periods and uses It’s also one of the few large areas of known archaeological potential in the lower Roding Valley which remains open and comparatively undisturbed
Past archaeological investigation of the park has been fairly limited The site was the subject of a detailed survey undertaken by Debois Landscape Survey Group in 1990 and a report by the Royal
Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) The focus of this work was on the mapping and interpretation of surviving visible features Buried archaeology has only been looked at in a very limited way, in a few small areas We believe that improving understanding of the archaeology can contribute to the management of Wanstead Park in three main ways: by shedding light on the development of the landscaped gardens; by clarifying the earlier history of the site; and by mapping areas of archaeological sensitivity, to avoid inadvertent damage by the park’s custodians during routine maintenance or improvement work
One of the things that has made our project unusual for a community-based exercise is the use that we have made of the latest archaeological technologies
Geophysical surveying The first stage of the WPCP project was a geophysical survey of the area north of the Heronry and Perch ponds The object of this was to try to
Scanning the ParkAs the Wanstead Parklands Community Project (WPCP) prepare their Heritage Lottery Fund bid, WPCP member Richard Arnopp reports on the group’s programme of archaeological investigation

shed some light on the Roman-era settlement that is known to have existed in the area The nature of past finds – a mosaic discovered in 1715 and deposits of elaborately painted wall plaster in our own time – suggest it was probably a villa
Archaeological geophysics has become more familiar to the general public in recent years thanks to the popular Time Team television programme Briefly, it is a group of techniques for measuring and mapping buried features using physical or chemical differences in the ground It allows archaeologists to carry out fast and non-destructive primary investigations over large areas, and can be used to guide the positioning of excavations
The WPCP/WEAG survey is not yet complete, but the ambitious scale and systematic approach of the work done so far has already borne fruit As well as identifying a variety of buried features which were completely unknown, the survey has shed new light on others which had been previously noted but poorly understood Although no structural remains of the Roman villa were found, we believe we are gradually edging closer to an explanation of Wanstead’s Roman enigma However, we did make one unexpected discovery In 2008 we found Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age pottery and ditches, taking the known occupation of Wanstead Park back into prehistory
LiDAR The most spectacular work we have done has been with LiDAR This is an optical remote sensing technology that uses laser scanning from an aircraft to produce extremely accurate plots of the terrain One great advantage is that it can produce ‘bare earth’ models which strip away vegetation cover The data produced can then be manipulated with visualisation software This allows the user to choose the angle and direction of apparent illumination, showing up any slight irregularities in the ground The vertical scale can also be exaggerated Aerial photographs and other data can then be draped on top of the terrain models
The Wanstead Parklands Community Project has obtained a full set of LiDAR data for the site from the Environment Agency, and some sample images prepared by Dr Rob Wiseman are shown here The terrace for Wanstead House and the parterres to the east and west are very clear, as well as garden features such as the mounts and the fortification which are currently smothered in vegetation
Desk research Archaeology isn’t just about digging, high-tech equipment and computer wizardry Old fashioned
desk research is a vital part of the process As well as tracking down all known archaeological reports for the park and its vicinity, we have carried out a detailed survey of hundreds of aerial photographs from the 1940s onward in both public and commercial archives We have identified a number of historic images of the park which closely reflect the features which have shown up on LiDAR and geophysical surveys, or on historic plans This is another vital piece of the jigsaw
Conclusion The archaeological investigation of Wanstead Park has been a model of community activity, organised and carried out by local people under expert guidance We hope that the partnership we have established with the park authorities will continue, and that we will be given further opportunities to research aspects of Wanstead Park’s long and fascinating history
Next month the Wanstead Parklands Community Project will report on an aspect of their work that has caught the imagination of many local people – the search for the elusive Roman villa For more information on the WPCP, visit www.wansteadpark.org.uk

Some of the best long-haul bargains for 2012 are likely to be found in Thailand, where things are now back to normal
following the floods last year, but there are some excellent offers from airlines and hotels to encourage people to visit. Thailand has always offered great value for money along with excellent standards and great service, so with big savings and additional benefits such as free meals, room upgrades and free nights at hotels, Thailand is likely to be top of the long-haul pile when it comes to value for money. It’s also a great destination for a splurge, with quality accommodation at low prices – a villa with your own private pool is ideal for a special trip such as a honeymoon or anniversary.
Elsewhere in the Far East, Vietnam saw the launch of the first ever direct flight from the UK in December, making it easier to get to and better value than ever before This is one of the Far East’s most interesting destinations, with a fascinating history, beautiful countryside and great beaches, plus you’ll receive a really warm welcome as the people are so friendly Take a junk cruise on beautiful Halong Bay, explore the Imperial Citadel in Hue and barter hard in the markets of Saigon before hitting the beach at relaxed Mui Ne or one of the other fantastic resorts – there are plenty of options to suit most interests and pace
Sri Lanka has become increasingly popular in the last year or so, and this trend is likely to continue in 2012, so if you’re planning a visit it’s best to arrange things well in advance The beaches here are beautiful, but Sri Lanka really comes into its own as you head inland, with spectacular scenery, ancient cities and a fascinating culture If you have a head for heights climb Sigiriya Rock to see the ancient fortress, or keep your feet on the ground at the 12th century Sinhalese capital of Polonnaruwa The highlight for many visitors, however, is the Pinnawela elephant orphanage, where you can watch the elephants as they bathe in the river
Heading west, the Caribbean’s largest island of Cuba is likely to see some major changes in the
next year or so, as it gradually opens up more and more It’s a unique country and in places its like stepping back in time, so it’s worth visiting before it changes too much It’s well worth a few days exploring the winding streets and pretty squares of Old Havana, and the capital is a great starting point for any trip In central Cuba the UNESCO heritage listed towns of Cienfuegos and Trinidad are fascinating, with their unique architecture and faded grandeur Cuba is also blessed with some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, so whether you’re a culture vulture or beach bum, it may just be an ideal destination for you in 2012
2012 travel trendsThis is the time of year when many people start planning their holidays, but with so many destinations to choose from it can be hard to know where to begin Darren Vurnum, from local travel agent Escape Worldwide, takes a look at the likely long-haul hotspots for 2012

To know something about any performers in a concert helps to make the event come alive and allows the performers to appear
less remote. With that in mind, I would like to share a little about myself and my accompanist, Mark Underwood.
I was born and educated in Bow, east London to Irish parents and from a very early age I had a keen interest in all kinds of music I attended the Colchester School of Music, first as a pianist and violinist and then becoming a singer after securing a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester From there I was very fortunate to obtain my agent, Concert Directory International, which enabled me to freelance as a singer at a time when there was a lot of solo oratorio work around
My first professional job was singing in the chorus of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Yeoman of the Guard at the Tower of London for two months Although cast with opera singers, there was one exception and that was Tommy Steel singing the role of Jack Point Performed in the open air, we were very lucky that we were not rained off that summer I then joined both the BBC Northern Singers and the BBC Singers in London as an ad hoc but very much used singer, because of my sight-reading ability As for my solo concert career, this has taken me to many parts of the world – last April to Hong Kong as soprano soloist at St John’s Cathedral and recently to New York, singing at a seminar for singing teachers
I am very happy to welcome Mark Underwood from Holy Trinity Brompton to play for this concert Mark studied organ with Ronald Frost in Manchester and Roger Fisher, organist emeritus of Chester Cathedral Last year he was appointed the full-time director of music at Holy Trinity Brompton where there is a thriving tradition of both classical and contemporary music He is an absolute joy to work with and has a passion for nurturing all expressions of creative art within the church
Mark has spent both his professional and personal life serving the church through music ever since
he was hooked by the organ at the age of 12 He was a finalist in the Young Organist of the Year competition and gained his music and organ performance degrees from the University of Liverpool, where he then went on to teach
Next month’s concert is a programme for soprano and organ of European sacred music, appropriate for the beautiful surroundings of Christ Church Approached by my late mother’s friend, Doreen Clery, I agreed to contribute this concert for a cause in which Doreen is involved via the Rotary Club of Wanstead and Snaresbrook – the Marjorie Collins Centre for Multiple Sclerosis in Chadwell Heath
In this concert – which will last approximately 80 minutes – the German, French, Italian and English schools of sacred music will each be introduced with a solo organ piece from Mark, followed by three vocal solos which I will perform with Mark accompanying There will be many composers represented, including: Bach; Mozart; Mendelssohn; Frank; Gounod; Yon; Howells; Vaughan Williams; and Bossi Mark has accompanied me many times at Holy Trinity Brompton but this will be our first real concert together, and promises to be an enjoyable afternoon for a cold day in February
Concert at Christ ChurchA concert of European sacred music will take place at Christ Church, Wanstead next month Soprano Una Barry, who will be performing with organist Mark Underwood, explains their respective musical backgrounds and what to expect from the Sunday afternoon event
‘A Concert of European Sacred Music’ will take place at Christ Church, Wanstead on Sunday 19 February at 3pm Tickets are £10 each For more information, call 01992 522 540

We are Claudia and Gary of Claudia Rose Carter Photography and Marshal Gray Photography. Having recently
moved back into Wanstead after some time away in other parts of London, we are settling right back into the community ethos and atmosphere. As full time wedding and portrait photographers we feel it’s very important to be constantly developing our styles and techniques within photography.
We are currently pursuing this through a street photography 365 project which entails taking one photograph a day for a year of people in public places A lot of it is a challenge; facing uncomfortable feelings (ours and other peoples) which pushes us forward greatly and inspires further confidence at weddings
We are constantly looking to capture small moments in time and emotions displayed here and there rather than the stiff formal images that wedding photography is unfortunately still known for
We will also be building our family portrait photography business in more depth throughout 2012 and examples of our recent work can be found on our blogs
Moments in WansteadLocal photographers Gary Lashmar and Claudia Carter have been documenting the world around them by photographing people in public places on a daily basis Here they present a selection of images from the project taken on and around Wanstead High Street
For more information on Claudia Carter and Gary Lashmar and to view more examples of their photography, visit their respective blogs at www.claudiarosecarterblog.co.uk and www.marshalgraystudio.com

T he huge popularity of farmers’ markets across the UK today has marked a return to simple, uncomplicated, face-to-face transactions between
producers and their customers, in the belief that bigger is not always better.
Creating farmers’ markets has proved to be the perfect way of re-establishing a direct relationship between producer and consumer. Their existence is helping to revive old craft traditions and small-scale production where commitment and direct accountability contribute significantly to the quality of the produce.
At Essex Farmers’ Markets, we are fostering these values by bringing selected local producers to village halls, high streets and market squares around the county. You could say that we are going back to the farm gate to rediscover a taste of Essex.

Wanstead businesses facing the twin threats of the worst recession in decades and stiff competition from the
new Westfield shopping centre in Stratford are fighting back with a new mobile phone app designed to encourage Wanstead residents to shop locally and reward them for their loyalty.
The Wanstead Village App, which is free to download, was launched last month and a number of local businesses have already signed up for a free trial
Local shops rely on repeat business and are happy to reward shoppers for their loyalty However, getting the word out about their offers can be a challenge Local residents are enthusiastic about supporting their high street, but with household budgets under pressure they are actively searching out the best deals In response to this we have come up with what we think is a win-win solution by making it easy for anyone who works or lives in Wanstead to find local offers using this app and to spread the word using the sharing features
The aim is to encourage customers to come back again and again by offering rewards for long term customer loyalty, which is very different from a short term promotion that only brings a temporary and short-lived boost to businesses
Wanstead is an area with a strong sense of community, so as well as local information we have also included a number of features in the app designed to make it easy for people to interact with one another – by sharing their photos and commenting on local issues, for example
The feedback we have had so far is that the app is very easy to download and use (even for complete technophobes) and shoppers really seem to appreciate the fact that local businesses are going out of their way to show that they value their custom At the end of the day, it’s all about making life better for Wanstead businesses and residents alike If the app helps to do that, we will have achieved what we set out to do
Rewarding loyaltyAs high street shops across the country fight for survival, local marketing expert Jan Willis explains how a new smartphone app she has created will benefit Wanstead’s local businesses and shoppers alike
How does it work? z On the app you will find offers from a wide range of Wanstead’s shops and restaurants
z Every week the app will send you a text message alerting you to any new offers from local businesses
z To unlock an offer all you have to do is check-in at the business concerned and scan a special QR (quick response) code into your phone, using the in-built QR code reader
z The number of times you need to check-in will vary depending on the offer
z Once you’ve checked in enough times to unlock the offer in question, you simply present your phone at the check-out on your next visit to redeem your coupon
For more information and to see the current range of offers available, visit wansteadvillageapp.co.uk

The National Citizen Service programme is a government funded Big Society initiative, specifically designed for young
people to enhance personal development and community engagement, and is open to all year 11 students in Redbridge.
NCS is a unique and exciting scheme, empowering young people to become active citizens with the ability to make a difference in their own communities, whilst undertaking physical and creative challenges and making new friends It will run for three weeks during August this year – after the London 2012 Olympic Games have finished – and includes a residential week of adventure activities, skill-building and a chance for the youngsters to pitch their own social action projects to a panel of ‘dragons’ Young people will get to see their ideas become a reality with the help of local charities and mentors, followed by a celebration at Thorpe Park when they graduate from NCS
JLGB (Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade) have brought together local authorities, schools, youth groups, charities and businesses in supporting young people to achieve their potential through NCS Participants will gain confidence with team building activities before learning new skills such as event management and cookery, which will help them in making their social action project a success Community partners supporting us in delivering NCS are: the London Borough of Redbridge; King Solomon High School; Interfaith Action; Jewish Volunteering Network; Caterplus; and Redbridge CVS
Based in South Woodford, JLGB have been providing positive activities for Jewish youth for 116 years Since encouraging young people to give back to their communities is central to our organisation’s core aims, JLGB have been made providers of this pioneering youth scheme which presents a real opportunity to bring a diverse mix of 16-year-olds together With a focus on social cohesion and interfaith engagement, NCS is a chance for youngsters to have fun and interact with people who they may never have met otherwise
JLGB are also the exclusive operating authority for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the Jewish community, and have been since its inception in 1956, offering kosher and Shabbat-friendly expeditions to over 700 young people per year Drawing on this experience, we have created an NCS model which removes any potential barriers by catering for specific religious and dietary needs, whilst avoiding weekends Participants can also use the NCS opportunity – which includes adventure activities worth over £1,000 per person – to go on to complete DofE’s or other volunteering awards
National Citizen ServiceThis summer, 16-year-olds from Wanstead and the wider Redbridge area will benefit from 150 free places on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme Rebecca Sear from JLGB, a national youth organisation and NCS provider, reports
Taking part in the NCS programme is free of charge All schools in the Wanstead area have been given the chance to get their pupils involved, but young people or their parents can also contact JLGB directly to apply – call 020 8989 5743 or visit www.jlgb.org/NCS

T he huge popularity of Farmers’ Markets across
the UK today has marked a return to simple,
uncomplicated, face-to-face transactions between
producers and their customers, in the belief that bigger
is not always better.Creating farmers’ markets has proved to be the perfect
way of re-establishing a direct relationship between
producer and consumer. Their existence is helping to
revive old craft traditions and small-scale production
where commitment and direct accountability
contribute significantly to the quality of the produce.
At Essex Farmers’ Markets, we are fostering these values
by bringing selected local producers to village halls,
high streets and market squares around the county. You
could say that we are going back to the farm gate to
rediscover a taste of Essex.

Think school is all about lessons?
It’s a common misconception that school isn’t fun, just
lesson after lesson. But we’re here to blow that rumour out
of the water.
There’s loads of stuff going on at Wanstead High after

teachers leave, we come in and open up the school to the
