Power Outage Prevention Facts And Myths

You can feel more secure that your home can weather any storm if you’ve got a generator to keep the lights and

appliances on in an outage. First, however, it helps to understand a few facts about generators. Common myths include:

Myth: Portable generators and standby generators are the same. Fact: A gasoline-powered portable generator typically powers a few appliances for a few hours at a time. A home standby generator is permanently installed and can keep the power on when the primary power source goes out, so you can run more appliances continually, such as air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators, clothes washers/dryers and lights. Portable generators can power a wide range of essential items and be used in multiple applications, such as camping or tailgating. Standby generators use your home’s existing fuel source (propane or natural gas) and turn on automatically.

Myth: You have to go outside in a storm to start a standby generator. Fact: One benefi t of standby generators is the seamless transition of power. The generator goes on automatically within seconds after utility power goes out. When power is restored, the standby generator powers off automatically.

Myth: A large, expensive standby generator is

necessary to power a house. Fact: Power management systems, such as those from Briggs & Stratton, electronically control electrical loads. This lets you power more with a smaller generator.

Myth: Standby generators are clunky eyesores that must be placed in the middle of the yard. Fact: Recent design advancements may give homeowners more placement fl exibility. For example, select Briggs & Stratton standby generators meet strict National Fire Protection

Association standards, so they may be placed closer to the house than in the past.

Myth: Standby generators require constant care and upkeep. Fact: Standby generators are programmed to exercise regularly—often once a week—to ensure that they are in working condition in the event of a power outage.

Myth: Portable generators can be operated anywhere on your property, even inside your house or garage. Fact: Portable generators must always be operated outdoors and far from doors, windows, vents and other openings to prevent carbon monoxide—a poisonous, odorless, colorless, deadly gas—from

getting trapped inside the home or garage. Protect your family with a carbon monoxide alarm whenever running a portable generator. To learn more about safe operation of portable generators, visit www.briggsandstratton.com/safetyfi rst.

Being Prepared For Mother Nature’s Extremes

Whether it is a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or extended blackout,

unexpected situations created by Mother Nature can happen anytime, anywhere. A recent national study found that while most Americans have experienced an emergency or severe weather situation, over half do not have an emergency kit at home and one third don’t believe they need one. To help, the preparedness experts at the Etón Corporation, a leading creator of high-performance, green-powered consumer products and the sponsor of the study, recommend a few steps you can take to better prepare for the unexpected:

Make A Preparedness Kit That Contains The Following: • Bottled water and nonperishable food • Extra clothes and blankets for each family member • First aid kit • A self-powered emergency radio and fl ashlight combo, such as one

from the Etón FRX Series. An AM/FM/NOAA radio will keep you informed, while the rechargeable battery (recharged via solar panel or hand crank) ensures you never run out of light or power. More advanced radios, such as the FRX 3, can even charge mobile devices via a USB port on the device.

Create A Disaster Plan • Get together with family, friends and neighbors to discuss what disasters or emergencies could happen in the area and fi gure out the best plan for the community. • Take a fi rst aid or CPR class.

Good news for teachers and those with a thirst for knowledge: A social learning company that

has helped to prepare students for success in higher education has created a new social media learning platform meant to help anyone learn something new. Since a site called Learnist was launched recently, tens of thousands of online experts have curated the Web’s best resources into “learn boards”—multimedia mash-ups of videos, podcasts, e-books, blog posts, pictures and quizzes. The topics covered on the learn boards range from how to multiply complex fractions to how to play the guitar. Visitors to the site can browse and learn about subjects in categories such as Art & Design, Education, Food & Drinks, Travel & Places, Sports and more. The em-phasis is on social learning, so users collaborate and help each other learn through comments and recom-mended learn board additions. Infl uential experts are adopting Learnist, including fashion designer Melissa Fleis, contestant on reality TV series “Project Runway,” and best-selling author of “The Lean

Startup,” Eric Ries. “The Lean Startup movement has spread around the world through so-cial learning and Learnist helps that by leveraging the wealth of Lean Startup content online and using that to create sequenced resources to help people learn more from and with each other,” says Eric Ries.

Reaching the Online Learner The site offers an innovative way to reach a social media−savvy learn-er both inside and outside the class-room. Several university instructors have created learn boards with mul-timedia postings that reinforce their classroom material. The site has focused on creating Common Core State Standards content for students in grades 7−12. Lifelong learners of all ages explore and share informa-tion on a variety of academic and nonacademic topics. For example, a learn board on wave theory might start with a defi -nition of the theory, then move into a video of a lecture from an expert in the fi eld, then into slides being displayed in the video lecture, all in an effort to explain a topic. English teachers might take a similar ap-proach by creating a board for a class on “The Adventures of Huck-

A Social Media Approach To Learningleberry Finn.” The site also functions as a DIY resource, so cooks who want to master a recipe can get step-by-step instructions with helpful videos while handymen can learn how to build and stain a bookcase. Like other social media sites such as Facebook, visitors can interact with learn boards by asking ques-tions, leaving comments or “liking” posts, increasing the social aspect of the learning experience.

• Teach children their basic personal information so they can identify themselves if they become separated from a parent/guardian. • Plan a place where your family can meet in the event of an emergency.

Educate And Inform Even with a disaster plan and preparedness kit in place, you are not fully prepared unless every family member is informed about the plan—and the potential for disasters. Once you’re aware of the type of disasters that can occur in the region where you live, fi nd out if there’s a “season” or time of year when these events are most prevalent. For more information about Etón Corporation or the FRX Series of self-powered safety radios, visit www.etoncorp.com..

Whether it’s to meet academic standards, brush up on existing knowledge or learn a new skill, the idea behind Learnist is to organize the world’s information online in a way that encourages the sharing of knowl-edge and learning.

Going Mobile Additionally, the company created Learnist for the iPhone and the iPad so users can create and curate content from anywhere at any time, making it
