Gulfood 2013

The world’s largest annual food and beverage exhibition: Gulfood took place in Dubai International Convention and

Exhibition Centre (DICEC) from the 25th to the 28th of February 2013. The exhibition brings together food and bever-

age producers, suppliers and manufacturers. In an area of more than 110.000 m2, 4,200 exhibitors from 110 coun-

tries attended the exhibition. Last year the number of exhibitors was 3,800, and the increasing attendance is ex-

pected to coming.

The food industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world and the global food and beverage production

market is estimated to USD 5.66 tn. Gulfood 2013 highlights the growth of the local food and beverage industry in

the Middle East; food and beverage imports to the member countries of the GCC region (Gulf Cooperation Council)

are expected to be more than doubled by 2020 reaching a total of USD 53 bn. This growth is among others accredit-

ed by the growing population, the increase of tourists, and the high level of

income per capita.

This year Denmark was represented by 26 companies at Gulfood, where 16

companies were placed at a joint Danish pavilion. The Danish pavilion was

supported by the Confederation of Danish Industry, Export Promotion

Denmark and the Danish Trade Council in Dubai. Danish companies report-

ed an overwhelming interest for Danish products from especially Libya and

Nigeria. The Danish export of food and beverage to the Middle East has

increased significantly the last decade and was approximately USD 610 mil-

lion in 2011. The Danish stand was visited by His Royal Highness Prince Joa-

chim who also participated in the opening of Gulfood 2013.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has established itself as one of the world’s

leading re-exporter of rice and a logistical trading hub for sugar, chocolate,

fruit juices, coffee and tea. This position is geared by the UAE government

organizing the country’s infrastructure to meet the demand by expanding

the local manufacturing and warehouse capabilities. The newly opened and

highly modern industrial free zone Kizad in Abu Dhabi is also expected to

play a major role in this regard. The Kizad free zone is a 417 sq. km green

field with special dedicated food cluster to promote manufacture of food

and beverage.

The next Gulfood exhibition will take place the 23rd – 27th February 2014 at

the DICEC. The future exhibition has been extended with one more day

compared to this year.

Demographic Growth

Egypt – increasing demand from a still rapid growing population

In the past year Egypt was ranked as number 110 out

of 183 countries regarding the ease to do business in.

This still implies potential challenges, however over-

shadowed by the long term possibilities Egypt has to

offer. Highlighting the statistics concerning the ease

of setting up a business, Egypt was ranked 21th com-

pared to the MENA region’s average of 98, this is ex-

plained due to among others the reduction in costs

when setting up a business.

Egypt is a rapid growing country and UN data forecast

a boom in the Egyptian population which by 2020 is

estimated to surpass 100 million people. This growing

rather young population are expected to have more

spending power.

Egyptians spend around 37 % of their income on food, drink and tobacco. Moreover, private consumption accounts

for 75 % of the Egyptian economy. This implies that the population growth will cause an increase in food consump-

tion, which is estimated to reach USD 94 bn. in 2017 compared to USD 47.52 bn. in 2012, a compound annual growth

rate (CAGR) at +11.8 %.

Danish companies in Egypt such as Arla and Danisco have regardless of the current instability gained a larger market

share and increased their turnovers. Arla’s turnover has doubled within the last four years and last year it reached

DKK 450 mil. Arla estimate that they have only reached approximately 15 % of the prospective consumers and there-

fore expansion plans are of great importance. Recently Arla introduced new cheaper product lines to reach a greater

segment of the Egyptian population with special focus of the rural areas of the Upper regions in Egypt.

Danisco who have been in the Egyptian market since 2004 have managed to increase the turnover ever since. In fact

the turnover has increased tenfold and last year it reached DKK 100 mil., a doubling of the turnover is expected dur-

ing the next five years. Also Danisco emphasise that despite the economic crisis the dairy and bakery industry re-

mains unaffected.

At the moment Egypt faces domestic and external challenges, but there is no doubt that the food industry in Egypt is

a huge and fast growing market with a lot of opportunities.

Energy Industry

Saudi Arabia – the oil-rich nation invests massively in alternative energy

Countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) intend to spend more than USD 250 bn. on energy projects over the

next decade, with Saudi Arabia alone taking up over USD 100 bn. of the value of these projects.

Saudi Arabia is dedicated to the growing trend in the region

towards the adoption of alternative and renewable sources

of energy in the foreseeable future. The increasingly growing

population in Saudi Arabia has resulted in a high demand for

energy and preparing the infrastructure for it is therefore a

major priority. Saudi Arabia has invested nearly USD 37.5 bn.

in electricity projects in 2012 alone. The investments, how-

ever, are expected to increase. For the last decade, the coun-

try has had an 8 % annual average rate of increase in de-

mand on electricity, however, to meet the demand, the

country today needs an 13 % annual average growth rate in

the electricity generation capacity until at least 2015.

Saudi Arabia has the ambition to become the largest producer of solar energy in the world. In fact, the Saudi gov-

ernment is planning to invest USD 109 bn. to produce 41 GigaWatt of solar energy by 2032 equaling 30 % of Saudi

Arabia’s energy demand at that time. The goal is not only to increase the electricity capacity, but Saudi Arabia is also

seeking ways to reduce the overwhelming consumption of electricity by adopting innovative lighting solutions. Con-

sequently, the Saudi Ministry of Water and Electricity has awarded projects worth USD 3.7 bn. to save 40 % of the

consumed energy.

Clearly, Saudi Arabia is aware of the demographic developments, and the demand for energy that will follow years to

come. The need for innovative solutions and know-how to develop the energy sector is where Danish corporations

can make a difference.

In corporation with the Ministry of Water and Electricity Saudi Energy is presented at the Riyadh International Con-

vention & Exhibition Center from May 26 – 29, 2013. The show provides a platform for buyers and suppliers to make

contacts and drive future developments in Saudi Arabia’s energy sector.

Power Plants in Lebanon

The need for renewable energy in Lebanon has, due to the implication of the adoption of the National Energy Effi-

ciency Action Plan for Lebanon (NEEAP) by the Ministry of Energy and Water on December 21th 2010, increased. The

total additional capacity of renewable energy sources is expected to be 525 MegaWatt by 2015. Currently Lebanon

has an installed hydro capacity of more than 283 MegaWatt; mean-

ing that together the total renewable energy capacity by 2015 will

be 808 MegaWatt.

The dominating provider of electricity in the Lebanese Market is the

public establishment, Electricité du Liban (EDL). EDL was founded in

1964, and with the favourable industrial and commercial location it

has been responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribu-

tion of electrical energy, with the highest possible quality standards,

in all Lebanese territories.

However, to meet the goals of NEEAP the Lebanese market has opened for private suppliers. Recently, Burmeister &

Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (a Danish power plant specialist) has landed two new large contracts worth USD

348 million, to build two diesel power plants of 194 MegaWatt and 78 MegaWatt respectively on a full turnkey basis

in Zouk and Jiyeh near Beirut, Lebanon.

The contract signing ceremony confirms that the two power plant projects are urgently needed by the State of Leba-

non in order to secure reliable and efficient power generation as soon as possible. Consequently, already in 2014

both power plant projects will be handed over to the client, the Ministry of Electricity and Water with the state-

owned utility company Electricité du Liban as the end user.

The new power plants will be state-of-the-art within Diesel Combined Cycle (DCC) technology. The two power plants

are expected to be the kick-off towards achieving more power capacity in the country in accordance to the national

energy action plan, which specifies the sustainable power generation to reach 12 % of the total energy consumption

in 2020.

The projects are expected to pave the way of more efficient energy projects, not only in Lebanon but in the entire

Middle East.

After the signing of the contracts Anders Heine Jensen, CEO in BWSC expressed: “…we are also very grateful for the fantastic

support we have had from the Danish Embassy in Lebanon, which has made an unsurpassed effort and without their support we

would not be where we are today”.

Spotlight

The growing potential of the camels

The spotlight of this newsletter issue from The Trade Council has its attention focused on the growing business

within the agriculture sector in the UAE, where it appears that camels entail to very substantial and growing busi-

ness opportunities. Businesses in terms of optimizing the camel dairy production as well as products for cleaning

and nourishing the camel’s coats; coat shampoo, conditioner, shiner, etc.

The economic expansion and intensive investments across the Middle East in the last decade has not only land-

marked UAE as the world’s centre for creative architecture and land of unforeseen opportunities, the property boom

and heavy investments has also blown plain hobbies as the equestrian sport into a huge interest organization where

the newer involved parties have shared status, money and glamour as common denominators.

Despite of that the true spirit of the UAE, its culture and Arabian heritage has survived throughout the high rising

and modernized society and the ever passion for not only the Arabian horse but also camels is an example of that.

In terms of UAE is today home of thousands of horses, hundreds of riders, owners and trainers and even more spec-

tators. The substantial local investment in the Equine Business is due to the Arabian heritage and the role that Arabi-

an horses have played in the Middle Eastern culture through centuries. The equestrian market has today proved

lucrative for foreign investors, and equestrian supplies and numerous companies has drawn benefits from the devel-

opment. However this is not the end of the cycle - in the shades of the Equine Business boom lure another closely

related business; the market for camels.

Camels are just like their equine friends of high importance in the Arabian culture. Reflecting the traditions of the

desert, the role of the camel has been given much attention as the ‘ships of the desert’. These proud animals once

carried Bedouins and travellers across the sands, and at the same time they would serve as important source for

nutritious milk and later; meat and leather.

Camel Dairy

Nowadays production of camel milk belongs to the dairy sector

and the demand and popularity of camel milk is increasing due

to various factors:

Camel milk has proved more convenient than cow milk in many ways; camel milk can be consumed unpasteurized, it is healthi-er, it has a higher nutritional value and is naturally lower in fat. More specifically camel milk contains half the fat, 40 % of the cholesterol and 3 times the amount of vitamin C of normal cow’s milk.

Currently, the camel dairies in Al Ain are experiencing an increasing overseas demand of their products which is due

to the approval by the EU of camel products for export to the EU. Dairy products produced by camel milk will now be

exported across 27 countries in EU.

Page 8: HE RADE COUNCIL S NEWSLETTER FOR THE MENA REGION/media/fae/Images/News/MENA... · the DICEC. The future exhibition has been extended with one more day compared to this year. For further

8

The popularity and increased demand has furthermore spread the range of products produced from camel milk and

the categories are now including; flavoured milk, yoghurt, cheese, camel-milk, chocolates and ice-cream.

There is however an issue regarding stabilising the production of camel milk. Some camels are producing up to 20

litres of milk a day while others only produce 2 litres. Given the increasing demand of camel milk the suppliers will

undoubtedly need to look for means to stabilize the production and make it more efficient.

Camel Beautification

It is not only the production of dairy products that makes

the camel industry interesting. Just like the equine col-

leagues, camels are raced, bred and rated for their beau-

ty. Beauty contest camel owners are paid premium for

the camel with the desired looks– in other words; the

most beautiful camel can bring in a selling price around

USD 2.5 million. Camel owners are very serious about the

beauty pageants and the grooms would spend hours

washing and brushing the camels to the desired look.

Locally there is put a great effort into the camel beauty

contests and the most winning camels belong to the

registry of protected blood lines in the region.

The attractiveness of the industry and the above mentioned markets, with the historical background and the cultural

importance of the camels followed by the honours accompanied with the camels, is due to: the local Emiratis will-

ingness to spend the necessary funds on their camels, and the sales of camel products expected to increase

throughout the world. The Trade Council in Dubai expects the camel industry to keep growing and the business op-

portunities definitely worth considering for Danish companies.
