  • What Is Befriendingand Mentoring?Through respect, encouragement and support, we aim tohelp families to discover their strengths, build confidence andresolve difficulties. We help families on both an emotional anda practical level. A Family Friends’ befriender may introducea parent to community resources, help to find out aboutrelevant social benefits, give support around parenting andwork towards better health and nutrition. Mentors may doactivities with children such as sport, art, reading, visiting parks, libraries and museums, giving academic support or justhaving a chat. Volunteers do not offer home-help or baby-sitting services.

How Do We Work? At Family Friends we carefully recruit, train and matchvolunteers to families. Volunteers meet their family in thehome, once a week, for two hours. We offer long-term helpbased on each family’s unique needs and potential. Volunteerspledge a minimum six month commitment and Family Friends’staff back up their work with on-going supervision andfamily feedback interviews.

What Have Families Gained?Since Family Friends was set up in 1993, we have assistedhundreds of families. Parents grow in confidence and buildbetter lives for their children. Many start using local facilitieslike nurseries and parenting groups. Parents return to education,go back to work or take up volunteering opportunities. Somebecome representatives on local community programmes.Children socialise, play and learn. They take up new interests, improve behaviour and get on better at school.
