PASTORAL LETTER
Dear Friends,
Perhaps, like me, you have been wondering if there would
be any summer. We then were hit by sunny days and
soaring temperatures.
It reminded me of my days in teaching. The summer end of
term church service would see us cheerfully singing
‘summer suns are glowing’ while the rain battered loudly
against the church windows.
Life like the weather can be full of extremes. Even in church
life things have gone from one extreme to another. Many of
us will remember when Sunday was a day when you
attended church and went for a walk in the afternoon before
returning for evening service. As little work as possible was done and children were not
allowed to play outside. Women would NEVER hang out a washing on Sunday. There would
be no newspapers and the television (if you had one) would remain silent. The radio might
be switched on but only for the ‘news’. Shops were all closed as were theatres, cinemas etc.
It was the Lord’s day and was to be observed quietly.
To our younger members this must sound very strange – something they are glad to have
missed!
Now we have gone to the other extreme. Only go to church if you want to and can be
bothered that Sunday. Often a very sunny day will take people off to the coast rather than
the kirk. Many sports and other activities for the children and youth are held on Sundays
ensuring that children miss attending ‘Junior church’. To distract the adults, we have shops
etc. open on a Sunday so that they will be kept well away from the kirk.
Perhaps what we need is a more balanced approach. Let’s make space in our lives for God.
Knowing him, learning to trust him and being willing to serve him will not only improve our
lives but the lives of all we meet.

FORTHCOMING COMMUNION SERVICES

The main quarterly celebration of the sacrament of communion will take place during our service on Sunday, 1 September. We also celebrate St Conval (29 September), St Luke (20 October) and All Saints (3 November) in short communions during our morning services.
While all are welcome to attend any of our services, a special invitation is extended to anyone wishing to attend our communion services.
SCOTTISH BIBLE SOCIETY
The situation in Ukraine has not improved over the past few years, with a failure of the ceasefire and fighting resuming in Eastern Ukraine.
The Bible Society runs a programme reaching out to younger people, helping with career choices and warning of dangers. One girl, Alina, received a Bible and took it home to read. Her family were impoverished, and violence and alcohol were also problems. Despite hostility from all of them, Alina continued reading her Bible, and in just 8 months, this Bible brought the whole family of 6 to Christ. Next year, Alina will begin training as a teacher of Ukranian language.
This is just one story of a family helped to come to Jesus, by your support and prayers.

WOMAN’S GUILD
The Woman’s Guild outing to Dundee on Monday 13th May brought the 2018/2019 to a close. We arrived in Dundee beside the new Victoria and Albert museum and spent some time there. The weather was kind and allowed us to enjoy shopping and many had their photograph taken with the Desperate Dan statue. Perth was the final destination for our high tea which was enjoyed by all.Once again, our secretaries have succeeded in putting together a great syllabus for the 2019/2010 guild session with evenings of music, speakers and our annual quiz. Copies of the syllabus will be available in September before our first meting on Monday 7th October. As always, we extend a warm invitation to the congregation to join us at any of our meetings for an evening of fellowship with time to chat and enjoy a cuppa!

The local Christian Aid Committee thanks everyone who donated and collected in our area during Christian Aid Week. The total amount raised in Rutherglen by all the churches was over £6,000 which has gone directly to CA headquarters, to be used where most needed.
When major disasters strike, there is an immediate outpouring of money, but CA also covers the aftermath of those emergencies. They help provide life-saving water, sanitation, hygiene and cash for food. Since January this year we have received £131.93 from members in our congregation, gathering small change in ‘WEE RED BOXES’. This amount could buy mosquito nets, worms for irrigation, or go towards a goat or a cow for milk, just to name a few. A few coppers added to another few coppers help so many people. The ‘WEE RED BOXES’ are available from the vestibule table if you would care to join in our saving plan.
Our Autumn Coffee Morning will take place in our Greenhill Hall on Saturday 26 th October at 10am till Noon. The inclusive cost will be £3, with all monies going to Christian Aid. We look forward to seeing you there with your friends.

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAYS
The church is open to the public from noon till 2pm each Thursday for a quiet visit or meditation. We also serve tea, coffee and biscuits, but bring your own packed lunch! This has become a very pleasant interlude for chat and company and any member of the congregation will be most welcome.

We look forward to our next session commencing in October. We meet on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm till 4pm and enjoy Tea and Scrabble. We would be delighted if some new faces joined us so, if you like words, or would like to learn some new ones, please come along.

WORLD MISSION NEWS
In April 2015 we answered a call from World Mission to send a donation for Nepal, after the massive earthquake which killed 8,000 people and made 6,000,000 homeless. The project was called ‘Let Us Build a House’. The last update told of £476,891.07 having been raised by Church of Scotland members.

Perhaps we could give thanks, in our prayers, for the workers and people of Nepal who are still striving to reach some kind of normality, and also remember Anne Davidson, our partner in Makululu, who contends with, and overcomes, difficulties every day in Mercy House.

As a congregation, we collect used stamps for the Leprosy Mission. Please use the envelope in the vestibule to donate your used stamps.New leprosy collecting boxes are now available in the vestibule along with the summer issue of their magazine. Please take one if you are interested.

MONTHLY COFFEE MORNING
We did it… we had a Monthly Coffee Morning that was NOT on the 2nd Saturday of the Month!!Yes, Landemer Day was changed to make way for football, so we were open on 2nd June, instead of 9th June. We didn’t find any gasping bodies at the church doors on 10th June, so everyone seemed to remember the change. We were very busy and served many visitors and friends, so thank you again to all who were involved.We shall continue on our usual Saturdays now, and shall be pleased to welcome YOU along.

Session House Refurbishment
The Fabric committee are required to undertake an annual inspection of both the Church and the Manse to unsure the buildings are maintained to a high standard. Any routine work is always undertaken as and when required. Other areas requiring attention are prioritised until we have finances to proceed. The Session House and the Vestry have been on the list for some time.
At the meeting of the Congregational Board in June approval was given to refurbish the Session House, to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the building.
To reduce the cost we agreed to prepare the Session House by scrapping the walls for the contractors. Our thanks are due to the small team of volunteers who gave up their Sunday afternoon preparing. Here they are at work.
If you are not familiar with the Session House at present, take a look and then watch out for the next edition of the newsletter when we hope the work will be completed. Please be patient if the room is out of commission for a short time whilst the work is underway.
