Recognize • Reward • CelebrateWelcome
The Center for Student Involvement & Leadership, the University of Iowa Student
Government, and the Graduate and Professional Student Government coordinate
the annual Hawkeye Student Organization Leadership and Service Awards
Program (Hawkeye Awards). Founded in 1999, the Hawkeye Awards recognize the
accomplishments of the University of Iowa’s student organizations, their leaders,
and advisors.
The Hawkeye Awards are presented to student leaders, student organizations,
advisors, and partners who have displayed significant initiative for the betterment
of the campus and community, which is demonstrated through: outstanding
academic achievement; exemplary service and dedication; strong leadership skills;
a meaningful contribution to students, the University, and surrounding communities;
and/or innovation by seeking creative ways to enrich the future.
This evening, in addition to the Hawkeye Awards winners, recipients of the Meet the
Challenge Awards will be announced in each of the five categories (Excel, Stretch,
Engage, Choose, and Serve). These awards were established in 2011 to recognize the
student who exemplify The IOWA Challenge. Finally, we will recognize student leaders
from Leadershape, Be Better @ Iowa, Associated Residence Halls, Fraternity
& Sorority Life, UISG, and GPSG.

Stephen Lynn Smith Social Progress and Justice Award
The Stephen Lynn Smith Social Progress and Justice Award, created in 2015, is named in honor of Stephen Lynn Smith, a UI student in the early 1960s. Smith was a conscientious objector to the military draft of men during the Vietnam War, and a man of great courage who followed his conscience, regardless of consequence. This award was established to honor and remember Smith and his inspiring example of passionately taking a stand on an important social justice issue.
The award honors one student organization leader annually, on the basis of demonstrated change-oriented leadership and a strong commitment to social justice issues.

Kelly S. Bender Choose AwardThe IOWA Challenge “Meet The Challenge” Choose Award has been renamed the Kelly S. Bender Choose Award in celebration of Kelly’s life and in recognition of her dedication to alcohol harm reduction work at the University of Iowa and in our surrounding communities. In 2013, Kelly received a shocking diagnosis of a cancerous mass on her hip bone. Tragically, the aggressive cancer metastasized, and Kelly lost her courageous battle with osteosarcoma on September 18, 2014. In 2015, the Office of the Vice President for Student Life and the Office of the Provost agreed to rename this award in perpetuity as a fitting tribute to Kelly.
Henceforth, the IOWA Challenge “Meet The Challenge” Choose Award will hereby and forever be named the Kelly S. Bender Choose Award.
