The book of Ruth works as a pic-ture to describe the wonderful work God has done by sending us His son, Jesus Christ. We shall see how the redemption of God works in this story through Boaz, the kinsman redeemer.

Elimelech and his family leave Judah

There was a man named Elimelech who lived in Bethlehem, Judah, with his family. The people in the land of Judah did not have a king. Every-one lived as they pleased. There was famine in the land, so Elimel-ech took his wife and their two sons

A place called MoabMoab was a place where God was neither known nor worshipped. Soon after his journey to Moab, Elimelech died, leaving behind his wife and two sons. His wife had be-come a widow and his children fa-therless. Great trouble had come to this household because of his move from Bethlehem to Moab. Some years later, Mahlon and Chilion married Moabite women. One was called Orpah and the other one was called Ruth. They lived in Moab for 10 years. Sadly, Mahlon and Chilion died also. Their mother, Naomi, was in a desperate situation. Her hus-band and now her two children, her loving boys, had died. God can use hopeless situations to show that He is great. For those who trust in God, trials can be a way of purifying our faith.

NAOMI RETURNS TO BETHLEHEM

Naomi was devastated by the death of her children, Mahlon and Chilion. What would Naomi do now? She had been bereaved of both her husband and children. Naomi had heard how Jehovah had visited his people and there had been plenty of harvest in the land. The aged widow, longing for her homeland and long-

ing to return, made up her mind to travels to Bethlehem. She was now poor, cast down and in a desper-ate situation. With the company of her son’s wives, Orpah and Ruth, she set out on a long journey back home.

We should always put our hope in promises of God.

ORPAH TURNS BACK

Along the way to Bethlehem, Naomi thought to herself, “these women are young and pretty, why should they follow me?” She urged them to return to Moab, but they refused. She had nothing to offer them, “they would be better off in their parent’s houses,” she thought. Orpah and Ruth wept bitterly, as they could not stand the thought of leaving Naomi alone in her situation. Then Orpah decided that she would go back to her family in Moab. She went back to her gods and her people. Howev-er, Ruth stayed with Naomi. Know-ing Jesus is the way to eternal life and we should not turn back.

RUTH CLINGS TO NAOMI

Ruth firmly clung to her mother in law, Naomi. She thought to herself, “this is a difficult choice to make”. I see something greater than our present situation. I recognise that the God Naomi serves, is a great God”. Ruth insisted on staying very close to her mother in law, Naomi. She refused to return to the land of Moab. She used the eyes of faith to see what her physical eyes could not see. She wanted to serve the God of Naomi.

Ruth was prepared to follow Naomi

There was a man called Boaz who happened to be a relative of Naomi. He was very rich and owned plenty of land. Ruth asked Naomi if she

could glean in his field in order that they might eat. Naomi said yes, so off she went. She made up her mind that she would do her best and work hard. Ruth was noticed by the owner of the field, Boaz. He said to himself, “I see a stranger amongst us and she is so diligent, where does she come from?” He was then told how Ruth had forsaken all, to follow Naomi. Ruth found favour with Boaz.

All those who make the choice to follow Jesus Christ will never be put to shame.

WASH YOURSELF, ANOINT YOURSELF AND PUT ON YOUR

BEST GARMENTS

Naomi longingly wanted her daugh-ter in law, Ruth, to remarry. It had been many years since her son’s had died. Ruth meant more to her now, than ten sons. She then said to Ruth, “wash yourself, anoint yourself and put on your best clothes”. She asked Ruth to prepare herself be-fore going to meet Boaz. Ruth lay at his feet and then asked him to make her his wife. He was the closest

relative and that was the custom in those days. He knew that Ruth was a virtuous woman. He told her that he would do as she requested. How-ever, there was a problem. Naomi had a closer relative.

One day those in Christ shall meet their Lord and Saviour. He shall dress them in robes of Righteous-ness.

BOAZ MEETS WITH THE ELDERS OF THE LAND

Boaz went up to the city gate and just at the right time, the closer relative that he had spoken to Ruth about, passed by. He knew that this man was the closest relative of Naomi. Traditionally, he had to be consulted first on the matter. This man was a closer relative than Boaz. He did this in the presence of ten witnesses, ten elders in the land. However, it turned out that the

Page 32: Hausa Book: Labarin Rut by Ruth Dickson (all rights reserved)

32

Page 33: Hausa Book: Labarin Rut by Ruth Dickson (all rights reserved)

33

closer relative was more interested in buying the field that belonged to Naomi, than taking Ruth as his wife. He did not want her children to share in the inheritance. He asked Boaz to buy back the land and marry Ruth for himself. The ten elders were witnesses to this agreement. So Boaz took off his shoe, as a sign of this agreement, and gave it to the closer relative. The elders then pronounced a blessing upon Ruth.

If we look at Boaz, we shall see in many ways the work Christ has done for us, by dying on the cross. He paid that price for us, that we might be free. We have a glorious inheritance in Christ.

BOAZ MARRIES RUTH

Boaz married Ruth and he also bought everything that had belonged to Naomi’s dead husband, Elimel-ech. He did this on behalf of Ruth’s future children. Ruth gave birth to a baby boy called Obed. His Grand-mother, Naomi was admired by all her friends. They said, “May he bring nourishment to you and restore your life”. They all praised Naomi because God had given her a daughter that was even better than seven sons. Ruth obtained an inheritance to which she had no

CHRIST OUR KINSMAN - REDEEMER

We can see in the book of Ruth the way in which Christ has paid a special price for us. Boaz is an example of Christ. Ruth, the pa-gan Moabitess came into an inheri-tance that was not rightfully hers. She was in a helpless situation, but

Page 40: Hausa Book: Labarin Rut by Ruth Dickson (all rights reserved)

40

Boaz showed her mercy. We also have been shown mercy. We have come into an inheritance that is not rightfully ours. We have salvation, through Christ’s death on the cross. Boaz bought back the land on behalf of Elimelech and Naomi. This is the same way that Christ has purchased life for us through Christ’s death on the cross.

RUTH BECOMES THE GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF KING DAVID

Boaz and Ruth > Obed > Jesse >David

Ruth, a despised foreigner, gave birth to Obed, who gave birth to Jes-se, who in turn gave birth to David. Little did Ruth know that when she walked away from her temporary earthly inheritance in Moab, that she would walk into an eternal heavenly inheritance, through Boaz. Boaz is like Christ, because He has given us an eternal inheritance through his death on the cross. Ruth is now permanently placed in the lineage of Jesus Christ. Is that not such an honour for someone who was once recognised as a poor destitute Moabitess? Those in Christ, have also come into
