Welcome We are a progressive Catholic Benedictine Community encountering Christ through the
celebration of Word and Sacrament, one another, nature, and our thirst to create a just world.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 : THE 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH
Humility is really a virtue that allows us to keep our relationships in proper
order: God first, others second, and myself third. However, we all wrestle
with our incompleteness, weakness, and imperfections. Passions and im-
pulses from within can color how we view our lives and distort them. Who
among us does not struggle with jealousy, envy, pride, and lust? Then,
when we can't have what we desire, we find ourselves angry, greedy,
and taking more than we deserve. The downward spiral continues. Even
Jesus' disciples, who knew him better than most, argued about who was
the greatest. Humbly seeking the wisdom that comes from God and His
righteousness is the corrective we need in order to keep ourselves in
check.
Have a great week!
In Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the Catholic bishops of
the United States urge all people to practice civility, charity and justice in
public life. How do we do that? Here is a set of guidelines to help you
vote your conscience:
• Know your values. Sum up key values from your faith and form questions
that will help you compare the candidate’s values with those that you
hold.
• Know the issues. Be informed about a significant range of local, state,
national and international issues. Use as many issues as possible for your
candidate evaluation.
• Know the candidates. Explore a large range of views rather than just
one or two. Examine candidates’ track record for personal integrity, phi-
losophy and performance.
• Vote your values. Vote for those whom you judge will further what you
believe to be right. For more information on how Catholics can
carry out this call to civil dialogue go to:
