MASS INTENTIONS

FR. RON'S RAMBLINGS (Continued from page 1)

I consider Austin an important extension of our parish mission, as it is a powerful way of “Bringing the Word to the Community”. It offers our parents the option of a Catholic high school education for their children. As one of the area parishes instrumental in the founding of the school, we have offered financial support to the school, and, as pastor of a founding parish, first Msgr. Mike and now I serve on the Austin Board of Directors.Several months ago a weekly column entitled “Austin in Action” began appearing in the Harvest News. It is one way of better informing parishioners of the school and its excellence. I strongly encourage parents to seriously consider Austin as your child’s high school. Tuition is relatively affordable compared to other Catholic Schools. Tuition assistance is available both from the school and from the Archdiocese of Detroit for those who qualify. In addition, St. Isidore offers scholarships for parishioners who attend Austin Catholic High School. I see it as a wonderful investment in our young people and our church. God Bless you,Fr. Ron

15th Sunday in Ordinary TimeNurturing is the theme of the First Reading and the Gospel today. Isaiah’s oracle begins by describing God’s gift of rain and snow that nurture the earth. The elements make the earth fruitful and fertile. God takes care of our need for crops and food so that we have plenty. Then Isaiah tells us God’s word does the same thing. Like the rain and snow, God’s word is fertile, taking root in us, and fruitful in the way we live out that word. That is the reason God sends it.The disciples asked Jesus why he spoke to people in parables. Jesus explained to them that people do not listen to the words they hear or see what is obvious to the eye. They need stories that explain the point. Those parables nurture his listeners, they are fed and they grow to be fruitful believers. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, counsels the people to bear their trials and tribulations. They and all of creation are suffering. They must bear it because they have been redeemed and the promise of eternal life is theirs. What’s in it for us? We see plenty all around us this time of year. Crops are growing, fresh fruit and veggies have flavor again, and the rain refreshes the earth. Farmers nurture their crops because God nurtures the earth. We are nurturers too. We are crops too. We nurture others by the example of our lives. We are the crops that Jesus nurtures with his word. His word grows in us because we are fertile ground. We hope to be a fruitful harvest for God. We might consider two questions this week. In what ways am I nurtured by Christ? How do I nurture others because of my faith? The word does not spread until we spread it.

Good News about St. Mary MagdaleneThe memorial of St. Mary Magdalene, which falls on July 22, has been raised to a feast. That may not sound very important but it really is significant. Most saints’ days are memorials that are scheduled on the sanctoral calendar to honor that person who is raised to the title of saint. A feast is the title given to the apostles and Mary under her several titles to honor their particular relationship to Jesus Christ. Mary Magdalene been given this honor because she is the apostle to the apostles. She was the first to see, speak, and worship the risen Christ. She was the one who carried the good news of his resurrection to the apostles. They doubted her and went to investigate for themselves. She was the first evangelist because she spread the news. She has been given the honor of feast because she loved Christ and was loved by Christ. Their particular friendship was mutual and respectful. She is the faithful model of discipleship for modern Christian women. Hurray for St. Mary Magdalene whose FEAST is this Saturday, July 22.

EVANGELIZATION PRAYER

Gracious God, Bless all the people of St. Isidore with increased faith and charity. Send the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts and minds that we might become a church dedicated to sharing your “Good News” with others. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL [email protected] DEACON BILL [email protected]

Addictions (continued) written June 13, 2017

But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Mt 19:26I introduce this thought with some caution: Not every intervention, regardless of how deeply intentioned, how devoutly participated in, or how “faith based” will succeed in a lasting intervention. Sometimes there are failures. Magical cures are for storybooks and fairy tales. God does work miracles, but they are for God’s purposes, not our bidding or earning. However, I have yet to meet, read about, or hear about any person successfully, by themselves, pull themselves up by the bootstraps and rise above their addictive behaviors. It may be true in some individual cases, but likely very rare. The greatest and longest lasting interventions are coordinated efforts of professionals, family and friends, sponsors, and the addicted person. Each has their part to play, but none more important than the deep desire and willingness of the person who suffers the addiction. I believe that it is fairly widely accepted that before any successful intervention can occur: the afflicted person need finally admit that there is a problem beyond their ability to control, and they need help. However, this often does not occur until the person has no other choice; it is either a matter of sink or swim, get out of the barrel or die in it, etc. And, just as often, the afflicted person comes to this decision when they can no longer manipulate others to provide for their addictions. Substance abusers, addictive personalities, learn to become masters of manipulation. Unfortunately, the technical term used to describe the social network surrounding the addicted person is quite insulting to many – enabler. No parent or grandparent, no spouse, child, sibling, relative, or friend wants to be accused of any willing participation in perpetuating an addiction; that is an insult. However, the nature of addiction sharpens the afflicted person’s ability to manipulate family and friends into unwittingly supporting their behaviors and habits. Just as important as it is for the person in “recovery” to have professional psychological help, close family and friends must also (if for no other reason than to understand what is happening in the other person’s world of recovery). One of the more common difficulties to overcome in the rehabilitation process is the difficulty in letting go of BLAMING. Certainly, the pushers that purposely poison others with drugs, those who profit by the illegal drug trade, can legitimately be blamed, prosecuted, and removed from society. The addicted person is no less a person because of their addiction, they always have intrinsic value. Blaming, though, devalues people, it assigns fault, ignores contributing factors, and diverts our personal responsibilities, our own contributions. We do need, both the addicted person and the helping community, to correctly identify, and where necessary, address and take ownership of the factors that contribute toward the addictions. Medical professionals do not simply treat diseases, they treat people with diseases. As a Christian community, we cannot allow ourselves to look at any person suffering in the grasp of some addiction as less of a person, having lost an iota of their intrinsic human value.

A SUMMER OPPORTUNITY PLANNED FOR YOU Three internationally-known speakers will be in our area this August just for you in the conference, “An Era of Change or a Change of Era?” Pope Francis has challenged us: "One could say that today we are not living an era of change but a change of era.” Our three speakers (Richard Gaillardetz, Ph.D., Margaret Nutting Ralph, Pd.D. and Fr. Howard Gray, SJ, Ph.D.) – each from their own reflection and experience – will help us to explore this reality that Pope Francis has presented to us. The daytime offerings (August 7-9) will take place at St. Isidore Parish, Macomb. For the full schedule and registration information, go to www.wearethechurchconferences.com.

Two evening opportunities (free will offering) will also take place:

“Wrestling with the Faith: The Demands of Mature Discipleship in a Secular

Age”with Richard Gaillardetz, Ph.D.

at St. Isidore Parish, Macomb on Monday, August 7th (7:00 pm)

Mature Christian belief has never been more difficult than it is today. This

presentation will reflect on the need to find a middle way between facile obedience and casual regard for the

received faith of the church. “Be Not Afraid: I Am With You Always”

With Margaret Nutting Ralph, Ph.D.at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, St. Clair Shores on Tuesday, August 8th

(7:00 pm)An unwillingness to embrace change is often caused by fear. In this session we will learn how to dispel fear by exploring the many ways in which the risen Christ

remains in our midst. For complete information, see www.wearethechurchconferences.com.Registration is required for the daytime sessions; the evening sessions are walk-in with free-will offerings.
