La finta giardiniera was long one of the least-known operas of the young Mozart, perhaps because the original Munich version, sung in Italian, quickly disappeared from the repertoire until it was revived in German from 1779 onwards. The posthumous version from 1796 recorded here by René Jacobs and his stellar cast displays a skillful reorchestration, extremely ‘symphonic’ and typical of late Mozart — to such an extent that numerous specialists have thought they detected the composer’s own hand.

René Jacobs returns to Mozart
street date: september 12, 2012
In one of the most exciting releases of the year, young Russian virtuoso Daniil Trifonov is accompanied by his mentor Valery Gergiev on a new recording from the Mariinsky label featuring Tchaikovsky’s powerful Piano Concerto No.1 and a selection of recital pieces (p.20). Trifonov, winner of the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition, was hailed by the New York Times as having “scintillating technique and a virtuosic flair.” Key titles from harmonia mundi include an album of rarely-heard choral works by Samuel Barber with the American ensemble Conspirare (p.11), the second volume in Isabelle Faust’s traversal of Bach’s solo Sonatas and Partitas (p.9) and new recordings of Schubert quartets and Beethoven sonatas by the Cuarteto Casals and Javier Perianes. Hyperion’s three priorities for September include a recital of French piano music by Stephen Hough (p.13), a fourth volume in the label’s series of the complete songs of Brahms (p.17) with baritone Robert Holl and a new addition to the Romantic Violin Concerto series featuring violinist Anthony Marwood playing works by Schumann (p.15). Conductor Iván Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra return to the works of Gustav Mahler with a new multi-channel recording of the Symphony No.1 for Channel Classics (p.5). Music of the great Austrian composer is also featured in the latest release from Onyx Classics. The acclaimed baritone Wolfgang Holzmair performs songs from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn accompanied by pianist Charles Spencer (p.22). In non-classical releases, the latest offering in APO’s series of SACD remasterings of jazz classics presents Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, which includes the all-time favorite “Take Five.”

IMPORTThe hunting horn is the French folk instrument par excellence. In its way, it is as exotic to foreigners as Scottish bagpipes, the Russian balalaika, or the bandonéon of the Argentine tango. The hunting horn also played a crucial role in Baroque classical music during the reign of Louis XV. Today, too often reduced to being used in the field and in hunting ceremonies, its great emotive power deserves to be appreciated by a wider audience. This disc, featuring the ensemble Les Trompes de Chambord, will appeal both to hunting enthusiasts, who appreciate the game’s special pageantry and traditions, and to classical music lovers who are curious about the instrument’s connections to Western music history.
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis album is a tribute to Armenia and to the Armenian musicians who have played alongside Jordi Savall and his wife Montserrat Figueras over the past several years. The repertoire, culled from Hespèrion XXI’s fascinating live programs, ranges from lively to contemplative. All of the unique and powerful music on Armenian Spirit is beautifully played using traditional instruments including the duduk, an ancient double-reed instrument with a deeply moving sound quality. Jordi Savall illuminates this music with a faultless musical flair, driven by his endless curiosity and supreme musicianship. The disc is accompanied by a lavishly documented and richly illustrated booklet.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe wealth of secular and sacred music Bach produced in his lifetime stands in stark contrast to the dearth of existing (or surviving) music for chamber ensemble. This deficit has been addressed by the English early instrument ensemble Florilegium with this disc from Channel Classics featuring the group’s charming and colorful arrangements of the master’s six organ Trio Sonatas. Adapting these pieces for varying combinations of instruments fits comfortably within the canon when one considers Bach’s own interest in transferring styles and idioms from other works to a solo or group of instruments, and vice-versa, something which he explored particularly during his years of employment at the ducal court in Weimar.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDWritten when the composer was only in his late twenties, Mahler’s first symphony is a study in optimism. ‘In full sail’ (his original title for the second movement) could be a motto for the whole work. In this vast symphony, we hear his love of nature and beauty, Mahler’s childhood memories, fragments of distant military music, birdsong and even Yiddish folk tunes as they blend together into a paean to life and hope. The work’s tribute to Beethoven is seen in its architecture, as it takes cues from his idol’s famous ninth symphony. The fact that Mahler’s first was débuted in the Hungarian capital Budapest gives Iván Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra a unique connection to its history. This new Super Audio CD recording from Channel Classics brings out all the nuances and colors of the work, from its softest whispers to its most thundering climaxes.

IMPORTThe unplayed early works of Ralph Vaughan Williams have been a tantalizing might-have-been for fans of his music. Now, building on the success of their recording of the impressive Heroic Elegy & Triumphal Epilogue, Dutton couples world première recordings of Vaughan Williams’ delightful Serenade in A minor and Bucolic Suite. These tuneful discoveries are presented together with some lesser-known scores from his maturity. David Matthews completed and orchestrated the slow movement of the unfinished cello concerto that Vaughan Williams was writing for Casals in the 1940s as the haunting Dark Pastoral, championed here by cellist Guy Johnston, whilst the orchestral suite from Vaughan Williams’ 1949 choral setting Folk Songs of the Four Seasons gives us a succession of delightful tunes. Featured artists are the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates.
IMPORTOn this collection of world première recordings, composer John McCabe’s musical connections with the natural world stretch from high summer in England, via the deserts of Arabia, to the sub-tropical rainforests of Australia. Les martinets noirs is the French name for swifts — a bird similar to the barn swallow. McCabe describes them as “acrobatic Pucks of the air,” adding that one of his annual delights in summer is to watch them swooping around the treetops and chimneys. The violin duo Retorica excel as the acrobatic swifts, while trumpet soloist Angela Whelan personifies the spirit of the rainforest in Rainforest II. In Rainforest I, members of the Orchestra Nova are joined by John McCabe on piano in a large-scale work redolent of the sights and sounds of the rainforests of Queensland. The recording is rounded off with Caravan, a short work for string orchestra inspired by the sight of a caravan approaching in the Arabian desert.

IMPORTFollowing the remarkable success of Victor Sangiorgio’s recording of Benjamin Godard’s delightful first Piano Concerto for Dutton, the label now offers another album of world première recordings of Godard’s music, including the even more tuneful second concerto of 1893 and the colorful Fantaisie Persane, both of which are essential listening for Godard fans. Conductor Martin Yates completes the program with orchestral music from two of Godard’s operas — the powerful overture to Les Guelfes and the orchestral suites from Jocelyn, until now only remembered for the enchanting Berceuse, here played by Aleksei Kiseliov in its version for cello and orchestra.
IMPORTGeorge Vass conducts the Choir of Merton College, Oxford, the Ulster Orchestra and Orchestra Nova in Dutton Epoch’s fifth CD devoted entirely to the music of Cecilia McDowall. The featured works, all recent and receiving their world première recordings, range from a sultry setting for soloists baritone Jeremy Huw Williams and violinist Tamás Kocsis of darkly evocative poems by Seán Street celebrating the tango, to a lively and inventive orchestral response to a painting by Turner depicting a train steaming across Maidenhead Viaduct. Also included in this richly diverse program is the atmospheric choral tribute Shipping Forecast and Crossing the Bridge, an evocative depiction of bridges in Central Europe, London and New York.

This set repackages the label’s two superb recordings of Bowen’s chamber music featuring the Endymion Ensemble. These outstanding performances were hailed by critics upon their initial release. The Horn Quintet and Horn Sonata played by Stephen Stirling are highlights, but the Sonatas for flute, oboe and clarinet are glorious as well, while the two trios (Rhapsody Trio and Trio in Three Movements) are consummately satisfying neo-romantic music.

IMPORTGeorge Chadwick (1854-1931) was a leading American composer of his day. On this Dutton Epoch series recording, Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart leads the BBC Concert Orchestra in a selection of world première recordings, ranging from the delightful, affirmative Pastoral Prelude written when Chadwick was 36, to the gorgeous, impressionistic symphonic poem Cleopatra of 1904 with its “lush and amorous” tune for Cleopatra and “big clashing battle scene.” Also included are the Sinfonietta in D major of 1904 (effectively the composer’s fifth symphony) and the Shelley-inspired ‘elegiac overture’ Adonais of 1899. This is immediately approachable and lyrical music, containing some of Chadwick’s most memorable melodies.
IMPORTIsabelle Faust has gone back to the original manuscript sources to offer us her personal vision of these iconic masterpieces of the violin repertoire. In Bach’s time, music for solo instruments was still little explored territory, and his Sonatas and Partitas immediately established themselves as a benchmark, technically challenging and brimming with creativity. On the second and final volume of the set, Faust plays the “Sleeping Beauty” Stradivarius of 1704, kindly loaned to her by the L-Bank Baden-Württemberg.

IMPORTComposed during the final weeks of Schubert’s life, the Quintet in C major for two violins, viola and two cellos ranks among his greatest accomplishments. Schubert’s decision to use a second cello (rather than the second viola
as in Mozart’s quintets) adds to the overall richness of the piece and gives it a darker, more melancholy timbre. In its day, Schubert’s Quintet was truly a revolutionary work. It is truly symphonic in scope, with ‘orchestration’ that mimics motifs characteristic of writing for winds and brass. This new recording from the Arcanto Quartet and cellist Olivier Marron (2004 first prize winner at the international Johann Sebastian Bach competition in Leipzig, Germany) illuminates the colors and decodes the complexities of this timeless masterpiece.

IMPORT / SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDOn their new recording Samuel Barber — An American Romantic, Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare honor the great composer with a selection of some of his finest choral works. Barber’s lyrical melodies and unabashed romanticism have earned him a cherished place in the pantheon of 20th-century composers. Featured here are the beloved Agnus Dei (choral version of the famous Adagio for Strings) and other favorites such as Reincarnations and Sure on this Shining Night. The recording also presents two world premières. Barber’s Easter Chorale and the sensual, passionate The Lovers on poetry by Pablo Neruda are heard here in new versions for chamber ensemble and choir prepared especially for Conspirare by composer Robert Kyr.

IMPORTMan’s fascination with the theory of perpetual motion dates back thousands of years. Musical expressions of the concept span from Franco-Flemish polyphony to modern-day minimalism. Beethoven used the virtuoso technique several times in his piano sonatas, as illustrated by the collection of works assembled here. The acclaim accorded to the pianist Javier Perianes by audiences and critics alike confirms his status as one of Spain’s most exciting new artists. He has a growing international reputation and has also received rave reviews for his recordings for harmonia mundi, which include Schubert’s Impromptus and Mompou’s Música Callada.

IMPORTStephen Hough presents an enchanting program of French music, played with the filigree perfection and total command of the music’s expressive world that make him one of the most admired pianists of today. In typical Houghian style, this recital is full of surprises and lesser-known gems from the repertoire, as well as works by the masters Fauré, Ravel, Debussy and Poulenc. A particular delight is Hough’s own arrangement of the Massenet song “Crépuscule,” a ravishing exercise in creative yet faithful transcription. This release is both a tribute to the lyric genius which flowered in nineteenth- and twentieth-century France, and a glimpse into the musical mind of a great pianist.

IMPORTHoward Shelley continues his appraisal of a composer who in his lifetime was classed with Mozart and Beethoven, and enjoyed international fame and admiration. Shelley is a master of the Classical-Romantic style and in his hands the music of Spohr, heard very little today, reveals a freshness and excitement that is utterly beguiling. Spohr’s Piano Sonata and Rondoletto are paired with works by George Onslow, Spohr’s exact contemporary. Both composers wrote very little piano music and this release comprises all their major works for the instrument. Again, music to charm and delight is rediscovered through Shelley’s expert performances.

IMPORTRespighi’s orchestral music is loved for its lavish, operatic fireworks and its pomp and circumstance. This recording of his music for violin and piano demonstrates a more tender and intimate side to the composer, and also shows what a master he was of melody. Respighi had many influences from all over Europe and an enthusiasm for German music which perhaps explains the pleasing echoes of Brahms and Schumann among others. The sonatas, especially the later in B minor, are important works of nineteenth-century chamber music, and gems such as the Valse caressante and the Serenata are suffused with lyrical elegance which is perfectly carried off by the wonderful violinist Tanja Becker-Bender.

IMPORTHyperion presents t h e t h i r t e e n t h volume in their ongoing Romantic Violin Concerto series. Although more often featuring virtuoso showpieces by the composer/violinists of the nineteenth century, this collection also highlights works of great musical interest which for one reason or another have not entered the standard repertoire. The present disc collects all of the works for violin and orchestra by Robert Schumann. Although the composer’s concertos for piano and cello are among the most beloved works in classical music, none of these works for violin has enjoyed the same success. That result will be surprising to the listener after hearing them played here by violinist Anthony Marwood in performances brimming with panache and brilliance. Included are the Violin Concerto in D minor, the Phantasie and the Violin Concerto in A minor (an arrangement of the cello concerto). Marwood is accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Douglas Boyd.

IMPORTHyperion has long been a champion of music from the Medieval era. Combining the highest levels of scholarship with brilliant musicianship and award-winning recordings, Hyperion has helped open the ears of a generation of listeners to the musical riches of the Middles Ages. On this intriguing release, John Potter, Christopher O’Gorman and Rogers Covey-Crump offer a selection of music from the Ars antiqua period. Focusing on a genre of sacred vocal works called the Conductus, the singers explore Western music’s first experiments in polyphony. Extensive booklet notes by musicologist Mark Everist probe into the intricacies of performance practice as well as analyzing the music and poetry in context.

IMPORTWith this release, pianist Graham Johnson’s latest project for Hyperion, the complete songs of Johannes Brahms, reaches its fourth volume. Brahms may be considered a giant of the Romantic era, but his songs and vocal works are far less familiar to listeners than much of his other music. However, there is so much to discover and enjoy in the beautiful, often elegiac melodies and characteristic piano writing present in his songs. The present recording features the songs of Op 94, as well as the Vier ernste Gesänge of Op 121. The singer is bass-baritone Robert Holl, who has been widely acclaimed for his live performances and recordings and is considered one of the most profound artists of the genre.
“Holl’s ability to embody not only the particular musical presence of each song, but also the emotional effect of every word, is unique.”

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67448 (034571174488) Deleted April 2010The music of Josef Suk, pupil of Dvorák and married to the elder composer’s daughter, is only now beginning to be recognized for its true worth. On this recording the Nash Ensemble presents three relatively early works, brimming with youthful enthusiasm but already showing considerable individuality and occasionally, a touch of the melancholy introspection which was to inform many of the composer’s later works. A talented violinist, Suk lends to his chamber compositions a true understanding of the genre, while his thoroughly Czech musical upbringing ensures strong representation for the folk and dance influences to be found in the music of many of his contemporaries.
IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 66803 (034571168036) Deleted December 2010Chabrier’s extraordinary, if incomplete, opera Briséïs is surely a precursor to Salome and approaches even that most lurid work in the gloriously opulent sensuality of its music. Performed at the Edinburgh Festival by some of the greatest singers of the day and recorded live by Hyperion, this thrilling performance stunned critics and public alike. Under the baton of Jean-Yves Ossonce, Joan Rodgers and Mark Padmore lead the brilliant cast, supported by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Opera Chorus. A genuinely wonderful discovery, now available at mid-price.

IMPORTUntil Claude Debussy’s remarkable string quartet of 1893, a Germanic model had defined the genre. Debussy’s was the first quartet that sounded utterly and completely French. In it, modal thematic elements and parallel chord progressions characteristic of Impressionism are paired with a coloristic finesse and thematic development that are as breathtaking as the work’s visceral beauty. Ravel’s quartet, written almost a decade later, took the form’s transformation a step further. Using classical forms and structures, Ravel deftly combined the old and the new to create a work that is timelessly modern. The famed Talich Quartet is featured on this new recording for the La Dolce Volta label of these two cornerstones of the French repertoire.

recording, he joins Valery Gergiev for a scintillating performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1. Trifonov also presents a selection of recital repertoire including music by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt transcriptions of Schubert and Schumann lieder. In 2011, Trifonov gave his début with the London Symphony Orchestra and has since performed with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Mariinsky Orchestra, as well as touring throughout the USA, Europe and the Far East. In the coming season he will make débuts with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Chicago Symphony orchestras, as well as performing recitals at Salle Pleyel, Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall and Wigmore Hall.

IMPORTThe numerous instrumental pieces or symphonies found in the dramatic works of Rameau are remarkably effective when played on the harpsichord. The composer himself, with his transcription of Les Indes Galantes, invited other musicians to continue this tradition. Seizing on the formidable array of material available in his operas, including Platée, Dardanus and Les Paladins, Pierre Hantaï and Skip Sempé take obvious pleasure in revealing, through their two harpsichords, the immense richness of this music, which is full of surprises and imagination.

IMPORTWolfgang Holzmair is one of the great word-painters of our time and one of the foremost interpreters of Mahler’s songs. This new recording from Onyx of songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn was made to mark the artist’s 60th birthday. Holzmair’s interpretation of this music draws upon many years of experience and brings a deep insight to these wonderful songs. The piano-writing is remarkable for its almost orchestral complexity and imitation of orchestral effects and indeed, Mahler would eventually score twelve of the songs for orchestra. The poems’ appeal to Mahler is easy to understand — nature, yearning, love, farewells, night and death all combined with the fertile imagination of the composer to produce some of the greatest songs written by any composer.

Over the past decade, new talents such as Cassandra Wilson, Patricia Barber and Holly Cole have redefined the world of female jazz vocals. Offered here in a SACD remastering by APO, Cole’s Temptation, a 1995 Blue Note release, is the artist’s musical tribute to the writings of Tom Waits. Standouts include a catchy version of “Jersey Girl” and a rendition of “The Briar and the Rose” augmented by the Canadian Brass. On Don’t Smoke in Bed, Cole’s second album, she explores a number of styles. Ranging from pop, blues, country and a French ballad to her standard, low-key jazz, Cole demonstrates that not only does she have impeccable taste, but she has the talent to make all of the material sound convincing. A longtime audiophile favorite, APO present the album in a remastering for SACD that further clarifies just what a fine recording it is.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzVirtually all serious and even casual music lovers ought to be familiar with (or at least are likely to have heard) the Dave Brubeck Quartet, even without realizing it — for the quartet’s best-known hit “Take Five” has graced the soundtracks of multiple films, including Mighty Aphrodite, Pleasantville and Constantine. The piece is famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody, as well as its use of unusual 5/4 time — so distinctive, it’s a rare jazz track that became a pop hit. Including the monster hit “Take Five,” the Brubeck Quartet’s Time Out is a jazz and audiophile classic. The accompanying booklet gives listeners a glimpse inside the creative process via notes written by Dave Brubeck and the quartet’s alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, who penned “Take Five.” Also included are fantastic photos shot during the recording session at Columbia’s famous 30th Street Studios.

Geoff Love was a British easy listening orchestra leader. Under his own name, he recorded many albums for EMI’s Music For Pleasure label, often featuring film or television themes or other instrumental music. In addition to working as an arranger for artists such as Johnny Mathis and Connie Francis, Love also was a composer, writing the theme music for the ITV sitcom Bless This House. On this disc comprising the albums Big War Movie Themes and Big Concerto Movie Themes, Love offers a collection of music from films including Ron Goodwin’s Where Eagles Dare and Maurice Jarre’s Lawrence of Arabia. Big Concerto Movie Themes has a more serious tone, focusing on the influence of classical composers on the cinema. Recording under the name Manuel & The Music of The Mountains, Love released several LPs on EMI’s Studio 2 Stereo record label. This Dutton recording collects two of Love’s ‘Manuel’ albums on one disc.
