NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: JUNE 10, 2014

Canadian musical treasure Angela Hewitt is back with a third volume of Mozart Piano Concertos for Hyperion, this time joined by her fellow countrymen the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Hannu Lintu leads the orchestra in sparkling readings of the 22nd and 24th concertos (p.11). Also on Hyperion are a disc of French Baroque arias by soprano Carolyn Sampson (p.12) and music from the Hapsburg court featuring vocal ensemble Cinquecento (p.13). Delphian regulars Concerto Caledonia offer a fascinating early-music release exploring the music of Tobias Hume (p.7), and worthy of special note is a collection of ten reissues on La Dolce Volta featuring the Talich Quartet, who are celebrating fifty years as a group (p.15). West Side Story is an evergreen treasure of American music. New on SFS Media, Leonard Bernstein’s protégé Michael Tilson Thomas leads a surround-sound SACD recording of the complete Broadway score that stars Cheyenne Jackson as Tony and Alexandra Silber as Maria (p.20). Jazz Village ventures into new territory with Lucky Peterson’s The Son of a Bluesman, an album of modern blues with a red-hot groove (p.24). Peterson’s release is also available on vinyl with three bonus tracks (p.25). Also, for vinyl junkies, this month’s release features three more LP titles including Ahmad Jamal’s Blue Moon, Ibrahim Maalouf’s Illusions, and Melingo’s Linyera (p.25).

IMPORTNommos Visiting is an electronic work based in speculative fiction, written in 1979 by American composer Craig Leon. It was inspired by a 1970s New York exhibition devoted to the art of the Dogon people of Mali. The Dogon are renowned for their cosmogony. Their art evokes their religious belief that they were visited by extraterrestrial visitors called as the Nommos - amphibian humanoids from the region of the double star Sirius. Leon explains, “It was an attempt to imagine the music that the Nommos brought with them to Earth from their home planet, thereby influencing the development of our own music.”

IMPORTThis final volume of APR’s Matthay Pupils series presents most of his remaining students who left recordings, as well as the few discs Matthay himself made. Of particular interest is a selection from the almost unknown AFMC label which was affiliated to Matthay’s school and featured many of its staff. Also included are recently discovered unpublished Irene Scharrer recordings which add considerably to her discography. Belgian pianist Arthur de Greef studied with Franz Liszt and also became a close friend of Grieg, who strongly admired his playing. He was a mainstay of the HMV catalogue in the 1920s and this set brings together for the first time his complete recordings.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDWinner of numerous competitions and enjoying an outstanding solo career, Dana Zemtsov is one of the most promising violists of her generation. Unlike other stringed instruments, the viola repertoire has not been as thoroughly explored. This colorful anthology of music for solo viola, which contains a selection of challenging works, helps to remedy that situation. Zemtsov’s début recording avoids the lyrical melodies and heartwarming beauty with which viola music is so often associated. Instead, there are tales of war, perplexed wanderings through obscured labyrinths, intense cries of despair, sour tears of sorrow, and at times an ironic grin.

IMPORT David McGuinness and Concerto Caledonia voyage once more into musical history, and this time the object of their exploration is Tobias Hume, about whose life we know very little. This recording draws on the two books of music Hume published in his lifetime, and ranges from capricious fragments of tunes that celebrate the simple joy of playing the viol, to potent moments of substantial emotional depth. Concerto Caledonia is Scotland’s foremost early music group, bringing to life the classical and traditional music of the nation’s history. This is their fifth recording on Delphian.

IMPORTLawrence Power is Britain’s greatest living viola player, the true successor to Lionel Tertis and William Primrose. Part of his mission is to perform and record music premiered by those masters of the previous century, including works by York Bowen, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Dale, William Walton and, here, Arthur Benjamin. Benjamin was one of the first Australian musicians to forge an international reputation. His creative output manifests a great variety of idioms and genres, and includes a good number of light-music miniatures, many of them infused with a jazz or Afro-Caribbean flavor. This album, which features Benjamin’s Violin Sonatina and Viola Sonata, displays Power’s remarkable prowess on both violin and viola.

IMPORTPavel Kolesnikov, 2012 Laureate of the Honens Prize for Piano, gave his Wigmore Hall debut at the beginning of 2013. Hyperion is delighted to present this brilliant young artist in an album of music by Tchaikovsky. Compared to his symphonies and ballets, Tchaikovsky’s piano music is little-known. It is generally of a much more intimate nature than that of his compatriots, and has more in common with the emotional subtleties of Schumann. The Seasons is a cycle of twelve pieces that takes the listener through the months of the year. Each piece also has an atmospheric epigraph. The Six morceaux conclude with the Thème original et variations, which is often performed alone as a concert piece, but is particularly satisfying in context, as recorded here.

IMPORTHyperion is delighted to present Angela Hewitt’s third volume of Mozart piano concertos. Here Hewitt is joined by her compatriot National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada and frequent collaborator Hannu Lintu for sparklingly stylish renditions of Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos.22 and 24. Both of these works were written between December 1785 and March 1786. For the first time in a piano concerto orchestration, in No.22 he uses clarinets – an instrument that became a regular member of orchestras only in the 1780s. No.24 is a dark and passionate work, made more striking by its classical restraint.

IMPORTThis album featuring Carolyn Sampson and Ex Cathedra showcases works written for the foremost soprano of the French Baroque, Marie Fel. Voltaire called her his “adorable nightingale.” Fel held an entire generation spellbound at the Paris Opéra and at Louis XV’s court during one of the most glorious periods of French music. She inspired some of Rameau’s finest music and introduced a whole new level of virtuosity and expression into the French singing tradition. Her long, triumphant career is traced through this fascinating recording.

IMPORTIn a departure for the vocal ensemble Cinquecento, they turn to the secular music of the Renaissance masters Philippe de Monte, Jacobus Vaet and Jacob Regnart, whose sacred music they have explored so successfully in previous recordings for Hyperion. Also included are six chansons by Jean Guyot de Châtelet. This collection is both historically fascinating and stunningly performed. The music is beautiful and sensuous, with the polyphonic arts familiar from sacred works of this period now put to the service of earthly emotions.

sixteenth- and seventeenth-century texts. Warlock was considered an authority on Elizabethan music and in the course of his life he edited over three hundred Elizabethan and Jacobean lute songs for voice and keyboard or for choir. Rarely have these works been so beautifully and movingly performed on record as in this celebrated album, featuring John Mark Ainsley, accompanied by Roger Vignoles.

FIRST RELEASE ON CD

DOMESTICThis release from Orange Mountain Music features the Dublin Guitar Quartet performing string quartets by Philip Glass on classical guitars. The quartet performed in Ireland with Glass in 2008 and later produced a YouTube video performing Glass’s String Quartet No.3. The video was seen by Orange Mountain Music and the label immediately resolved to collaborate with the group. The recital presents Glass’s quartets Nos.2, 3, 4 and 5 in arrangements by the members of the group themselves. The transcriptions are thoughtful adaptations that show unusual insight and understanding of the music. Orange Mountain Music also presents a new recording by the Sinfonieorchester Basel of Philip Glass’s Symphony No.1, subtitled Low, a work based on the music of popular music artists David Bowie & Brian Eno. Composed in 1992, Glass took his departure from Bowie & Eno’s beautiful melodies in crafting a three-movement symphony. This new recording, only the second set to disc, is conducted by Glass champion Dennis Russell Davies and offers a shimmering rendition of the work.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD With this release, the Zemlinsky Quartet’s cycle of the complete String Quartets of Dvorák for Praga is now complete. These talented Czech musicians grasp the Slavonic idiom innately,

offering performances that present a careful balance between the music’s folk and classical influences. Included here are the 10th and 11th quartets (not the 13th, as noted on the inlay).

IMPORTDuring preparations for their 25th anniversary in 2010, the Ensemble Recherche came to the conclusion that the “theme” for their celebration should be songs of love. After discovering there were so few modern examples, the group

commissioned works from various composer friends. The response from the invited composers was strong. Thirty love songs are included in this set, but still more are in progress. Accordingly, the list of composers for this love song cycle reads like a “Who’s Who” of new music and the compositions are as varied as the personalities of the participating artists.

JUNE 2014JAZZ

IMPORTFile in: JazzThe latest SACD remasters from Analogue Productions of classic recordings includes three gems from three jazz greats. The release of Saxophone Colossus was a pivotal moment in the career of saxophone great Sonny Rollins. It solidified Rollins’s position as one of the influential forces in the jazz of the ‘50s. In 1956, drummer Art Taylor formed a group called Taylor’s Wailers. Donald Byrd and Charlie Rouse were the founding members, but when Taylor recorded the Wailers for Prestige, he added the alto saxophone of Jackie McLean to the front line. One of the first Broadway musical scores to be overtly jazz-influenced was Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. In 1962, pianist Oscar Peterson put his swinging signature on the already popular score, making it, in the words of one critic, “a delight to hear again,” and earning him a GRAMMY® nomination.

IMPORTFile in: JazzIt’s no small thing to be called, “The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn,” but that’s how Joel Siegel of the Washington City Paper described Dena DeRose. Her performance credits range from appearances at the Blue Note, Smoke, Jazz Standard, the Kennedy Center, clubs as far flung as Tokyo and Rome and major jazz festivals worldwide. DeRose finds time to teach and has been on the faculty of Manhattan School of Music, NYU, The New School, and others and is currently head of the jazz vocal department at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. Her HighNote Records début featured songs associated with, appropriately enough, Shirley Horn. Joining her usual trio are trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThe organ trio has been a staple of small-group jazz for more than half a century, but Mike LeDonne has expanded its range and power by adding another voice, that of the superlative tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, who earned his spurs with organist Charles Earland’s group nearly two decades ago and, since then, has risen steadily to the top rank among contemporary tenors. LeDonne and Alexander are bolstered by a brace of seasoned pros, guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Joe Farnsworth. On the other hand, perhaps “bolstered” isn’t the proper word, as this is above all a quartet of equals, and Bernstein and Farnsworth’s voices are no less decisive than LeDonne’s or Alexander’s. With LeDonne scorching the Hammond B3, Alexander adding heat to the proceedings at every turn and Bernstein and Farnsworth stoking the boiler room, this is an album that grooves emphatically from the outset.

JUNE 2014JAZZ

IMPORTFile in: BluesLucky Peterson is considered one of the preeminent blues artists of the modern era. A child prodigy, at the age of six he scored a national R&B hit with the Willie Dixon-produced “1-2-3-4,” which landed him appearances on both the Tonight Show and the Ed Sullivan Show. Following stints with Little Milton and Bobby Bland, Peterson launched his solo career and never looked back. In addition to his extensive catalog on Alligator, Blue Note, Evidence JSP and Verve, he’s also teamed up with such luminaries as Albert Collins, Etta James, B.B. King, Otis Rush and Mavis Staples. Peterson’s début on Jazz Village, The Son of a Bluesman, pays tribute to his father, James Peterson, who owned a blues club in Buffalo called The Governor’s Inn where all the greats used to play. Recorded in Dallas, The Son of a Bluesman mixes originals and inspired covers in a poetic blend of darkness and light, all supported by an irrepressible groove.

IMPORT File in: World / Europe / RussiaVolga is a project rooted in the Moscow music scene. It successfully combines experimental electronics, contemporary dance rhythms and Russian folklore. Pagan psychedelia, shamanism,

melodies and lyrics from ancient times combined with urban aesthetics and video art are the essential components of Volga’s performances. Some might say Volga is the sound of the Middle Ages erupting in our times. Others might object by saying that this is the third millennium speaking to us in the language of the Russian Middle Ages. Just as the central Russian river of the same name unites 200 streams, this band merges together so many musical currents and tides that it magically develops into a new kind of life-giving riverbed.

IMPORT File in: World / Africa / AlgeriaThis album by Lili Boniche, which enjoys a kind of ‘cult’ status in world music circles, is available again at a special price, with the added bonus of three previously unreleased tracks.

One of the cornerstone releases of modern Arab-Andalusian music, Trésors de la musique judéo-arabe features music infused with the heady aromas of the spice markets and the scents of the Mediterranean, here the rumba of Algiers, there the festive chaabi.
