NON-TRADITIONAL MACHINING PROCESS

• In this process, a water jet is used ,which act as a tool in the form of a water saw to cut material. It is two types pure water jet & abrasive water jet.

PURE WATER JET MACHINING

• PUMP• INTENSIFIER• ACCUMULATOR• HIGH PRESSURE TUBING• NOZZLE• ORIFICE• CONTROL SYSTEM • CATCHER

ABRASIVE WATER JET MACHINING :-

• Orifice-Sapphires-0.1 to 0.3 mm• Focussing Tube- 0.8 to 2.4 mm• Pressure -2500 to 4000 bar• Abrasive Flow -0.1 to 1.0 kg/min• Abrasive – garnet and olivine

MATERIALS:-

ABRASIVE WATER JET• Steels• Non-Ferrous alloyes• Ti-alloys,Ni-alloys• Polymers• Metal Matrix composite• Ceramic matrix composite

PURE WATER JET• Concrete• Stone-Granite• Wood• Glass fibre metal

Laminates

ADVANTAGES:-• Cheaper than other process.• Cut any material• Water jet cutting does not produce any dust or

particles.• There is no heat affected zones.

Page 9: Harendra kua

DISADVANTAGES :-

• Abrasive powder cannot be reused.• It is not suitable for mass production because

of high maintenance requirements.• Very thick parts can not be cut with water jet.

APPLICATIONS

WATER JET MACHINING• Cutting Soft Material• Textile , Leather Industry• Mass Immunization• Surgery

ABRASIVE WATER JET • Peening• Cutting• Pocket Milling• Drilling• Turning• Nuclear Plant Dismantling

CONCLUSION:-There is no conventional tool used, therefore no physical contact between the workpiece and tool . This method is free from generate high heat affected zones. It is moreover environmental friendly, hence it is more preferred.
