enjoyed listening to the story about Canteen Creek and the cheeky dogs and animals that invade the town.

This week we are being visited by children’s author Phil Cummings and will be engaging in a range of activities linked to his books.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It was fantastic to see and feel the excitement that dressing up for Book Week “Under the Sea” created last Friday. There were so many wonderful ideas for costumes. Making costumes is definitely a STEM activity, often incorporating elements of science, technology, engineering and maths. The Chandlers Hill kindergarten students joined us for The Parade once again. Thank you to our hard working Book Week committee who organised the event: Ms Mousley, Mrs Bartlett, Miss Resnais, Robyn Overduin and Mrs Grierson. Thanks to parents caregivers and the community who braved the cold to come and watch our Parade. The front foyer and the library are decorated in the “Under the Sea” theme as well. We are looking forward to author Phil Cummings visiting our school on Wednesday and working with our students.

Our NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) results have arrived. They were sent home Tuesday with students who are in Years 3, 5 and 7. Please approach your child’s teacher with any queries or concerns.

We have been focussing on our school safety rule of “not running on the bricks”. Every student knows this rule; however we have had many students who consistently do not walk. There is a high possibility of people colliding when running as these areas carry high traffic and there are many corners to navigate around the buildings. Over the last couple of weeks, when students have broken this rule they have been asked to sit out for 5 minutes and a yellow slip has been filled in. Our students have been practising to stop, think and walk when on the bricks. The collected data was visible in the library window for all to see. Our data certainly shows that practising and consequences certainly make a difference and that we have become better at remembering over time. On the first day, 38 students ran on the bricks. We have had one day when only 5 students were seen running on the bricks. Thanks to those parents who have supported us by reinforcing this safety rule with their children and pre-schoolers. Staff are in the process of choosing another focus to practise.

Friday is a School Closure Day. There is to be no one on our school site as there are minor asbestos works being carried out.

On Monday, 4th September, our staff will be working with staff from Aberfoyle Hub Primary School. We are looking forward to working with them again. Regards, Sue Schmidt Acting Principal

MATHS SURVEY – OLIVIA RESNAIS

What do you think Mathematics means? To me, Mathematics means exploring endless opportunities to work with numbers, patterns,

quantity, space, time and abstract concepts. It allows us to express our thinking in different ways using mathematical strategies to develop unique answers and concepts.

How do you use maths in everyday situations?

We use maths in everyday situations such as time management, organisation, planning, budgeting, shopping and in maths lessons!

What is your favourite maths thing to do?

My favourite maths thing to do is teaching students to develop strategies for number. I also enjoy teaching students maths that is connected to the world around them which they will benefit from in

the future.

JUNIOR PRIMARY PUPPET THEATRE - CROWIES PAINTS Happy Valley J

Happy Valley Junior Primary’s Puppet Theatre appears on the Crowies Paints Website.

Please follow the link to view online http://crowiespaints.com.au/community/2017/08/happy-valley-primary-

school-puppet-theatre/

The puppet theatre was painted with Solver Low Sheen interior paint from the Crowies Paints store at Malvern.

The dark blue colour used on the front is "Solver Strength" and the red on the sides is "Solver Paso Doble". Colour samples of both these colours are readily

available from any of the Crowies Paints stores. We're sure the reception children will get many hours of enjoyment from

their new puppet theatre. Congratulations to all involved on a job well done.
