Fr. John’s Notes A Reflection on Mothers, Home, and the Catholic Church Due to the pandemic, all of us have spent more time

at home as compared to our normal routine. As I look back to my younger years, I can remember them still. I remember fondly how my mother made a home for me. As I moved from one parish to another, I always had a home wherever my moth-er lived. I also always felt that the Church was my spiritual home. No matter which church building I privately prayed in or celebrated a big elaborate liturgy, it gave me a feeling of home. This week in the Gospel we have a reading from St. John that is often used at funerals. Jesus states, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” I hope and pray that we can come together again soon in our spiritual home, our Church, as we honor our mothers and grandmothers who worked hard to make a home for us. May God Bless Our Mothers On this weekend when we remember and honor our mothers, I am especially reminded of the truly wonderful, gifted, and faith-filled women from our families and parishes who have left us for eternal life. Their deaths have left a huge hole in our lives. We miss them! Sally Budworth’s family graciously shared with me the following winning essay she wrote for the Best Partner Contest that was sponsored by the Grantland Chapter of the Wisconsin Women for Agriculture. Her words speak volumes. We pray for and thank all of the women who have filled our lives and families with their love and care. ‘Best Partner’ “Can you help me hitch up? It’ll only take a minute.” That little request usually takes me all morning. Because, I’m there, I open and shut the gates, and then the chores are waiting. But that small effort pays many fringe benefits. He smiles as he says that the house is a mess – the maid must have the day off. Now he knows why the kitchen floor wasn’t swept. The milk house got a good cleaning. Our second cup of morning coffee is our best time of day. We plan our work then; plans the mind makes, and the body can’t always carry through. But it is so nice to be under-stood from tired bones to aching muscles. As a partner in farming I get to know both. There are greater experiences you cannot fully grasp until you are there: for starters, watching a new calf stand for the first time or smell new mown hay on a moonlight night. It gives that tired body such a feeling of peace. What smells better that a summer rain? Every spring I get the first dandeli-on delivered to me with a big grin and a “Who says I never give you flowers?” Flowers are few, but they mean so much, like a full-blown rose and a rose bud when the first baby arrived. Those babies are grown now. There is such a fulfilled feeling when someone says, “Oh, that’s your son? He’s such a nice kid.” What more rewarding partnership is there than to raise a family you are both proud of, and they are proud to be your children. – Marcella “Sally” Budworth

VOCATION Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of “vocation” and the manner in which each of us discerns our vocation for life. In today’s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the “cornerstone” of our vocation, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vocation as “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God’s] own, so that you may announce the praises” of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:9). All of us, no matter what path our life’s vocation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anointed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through baptism. All of this, so that we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace—wherever life takes us—in service, in word, and in sacrament. Copyright © J.
