SPIRITUALITY & PRAYER

Independence Day Prayer

God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory

of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being.

Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong:

that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs

to every life on earth. Turn our hearts toward the family of nations:

to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship,

and to find safety only in the common good of all. Amen

God of redemption, you labor tirelessly for human salva-tion. Give us your vision of the future and grant us now the strength we need to labor with you to bring the bless-ings of your kingdom to fruition for all peoples.

Announcements SV Grads make ‘Top of the Class’

We extend our congratulations to Jay Naidu, a Jun-ior, and Daniel Shea, a Sophomore, both attending Junipero Serra High School who earned all A’s dur-ing the 2010 Spring semester. We will continue to keep these grads and all our St. Veronica students in our prayers for continued blessings, joy in their hearts, and peace in their minds.

We in the United States celebrate today an his-torical event of separation and independence from, what was known as, “Mother England.” There are still parades, speeches and the evening skies are filled with fireworks. We love our inde-pendence. We celebrate as Catholics, an historical event of inclusion and dependence. We refer to the Church as “Holy Mother” and every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, there are proc-lamations of the Word, processions towards and away from the altar, and our days are thereby filled with the “graceworks” of Christ. We center our prayer in preparation for the Eucharist about our being included and a spirit of rejoicing, because God has taken up a divine presence among us. We can pray with our per-sonal histories of distancing ourselves from God, because God keeps seeking and finding us. In Jesus, God has extended the Holy of Holies from bricks into hearts. We all have played games of independence from God and sometimes we think we have won. God does not play games, but plays to win and that victory is our joy.

FREEDOM Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves. -Abraham Lincoln LIBERTY Life without liberty is like a body without spirit. Kahill Gibran

What kind of harvest does the Lord want us to reap to-day? Luke the Evangelist dedicated his life to telling oth-ers of the good news of Jesus Christ. Luke's account in his Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles emphasizes the mission of Jesus to bring the kingdom of God to every corner of the world. When Jesus commissioned seventy of his disciples to go on mission, he gave them a vision of a great harvest for the kingdom of God. Jesus frequently used the image of a harvest to convey the coming of God’s reign on earth. The harvest is the frui-tion of labor and growth – beginning with the sowing of seeds, then growth, and finally fruit for the harvest. In like manner, the word of God is sown in the hearts of receptive men and women who hear his word and who accept it with trust and obedience. The harvest Jesus had in mind was not only the people of Israel, but all the peo-ples (or nations) of the world

CONFIRMATION CATECHISTS NEEDED We are looking for catechists for the Religious Education Pro-gram. Some of our catechists, who have given many years of service to the program, are taking some time off. We are seek-ing catechists for the 1, 4, 5 and 7th grades and Confirmation Preparation. We provide the training, the curriculum and support. You provide your gifts! Our program curriculum is a home group based catechesis, unique in the Archdiocese. Each home group of confirmandi meets for 10 sessions. We have special service projects de-signed to give the confirmandi an opportunity to serve our par-ish. If you are interested in volunteering to teach in our Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning classes or to be a confirmation team member, please call us at 871.5607. “The harvest is abundant, but there are few workers to gather it in; so ask the master of the harvest to send out workers to gather in his harvest.” -Matthew 9: 36-38
