Canadian musical artists have been hitting the right notes for de-cades when it comes to infl uence and their stature. And we’re not just talking about Celine Dion.

Here’s some musical trivia to think about when you’re proudly singing O Canada:

The Band were a seminal roots rock group that infl uenced numerous groups, songwriters and per-formers ranging from Grateful Dead and Eric Clap-ton to Elton John and Pink Floyd. Their musical style was a mix of many musical styles strongly infl uenced by Arkansas, U.S. but did you know that four-fi fths of The Band were Canadian? Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Rob-bie Robertson all hailed from the Great White North with Levon Helm of Arkansas as the sole American. Even Ronnie ‘The Hawk’ Hawkins, who was involved in their formation, relocated to Ontario from his native Arkansas.

A. It took them 41 years, but Canadian rock trio Rush fi nally made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine which is on newsstands this week, much to the delight of longtime fans. Diehard ‘Rushians’ also felt vindicated in 2013 when their band received what they felt was another long overdue honour. What was it?

B. Canadians have a reputation for being polite and friendly, but at least one musician’s lyrics were grating enough to get under a southern rock band’s skin that they mentioned him by name in their biggest hit song. Who’s the Canadian rocker and what was the song?

a) Bryan Adamsb) Neil Youngc) Paul Ankad) Randy Bachman

C. The 2003 romantic comedy Love Actually soundtrack includes songs from a legendary Canadian songstress. Who is she?

D. Okay, so this one isn’t about a Canadian musical artist but it does involve a piece of Canadiana – an Ontario Pro-vincial Police badge – that made it on the cover of one of

the most signifi cant albums of the late 1960s, recorded by one of the greatest bands of all time. What was the album and band?

E. What band sang the lines, “Bon, c’est bon, bon, bon, c’est bon”?

a) Stampedersb) Loverboyc) Trooperd) Chilliwack

F. Who said this? ‘When I’m not touring, I sing at home, either at the piano or I’ll pick up my guitar, singing old Buck Owens songs.”

G. Complete the lyric from the hit song “Signs” by the Canadian rock group Five Man Electrical Band: “And the sign said, ‘Long-haired freaky people____”

a) should be shot on sight’b) could come in, kneel down and pray”c) need not apply.”d) are blocking the scenery, breakin’ my mind.”e) don’t have a membership card to get inside.”

Musically speaking...

A. Answer: Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum

B. Answer: Neil Young. Lynyrd Skynrd’s Sweet Home Alabama includes the line, “I hope Neil Young will remem-ber, a southern man don’t need him around anyhow” as a response to his song “Southern Man.”

C. Answer: Joni Mitchell

D. Answer: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band by The Beatles. Paul McCartney is shown wearing the OPP badge on his shoulder, which many took as a clue that the musician was dead because the lettering appeared to read “OPD” or Offi cially Pronounced Dead. Most accept the sto-ry that a summer student working in the garage of OPP headquarters gave John Lennon the patch after the band’s 1966 concert in Toronto.

E. Answer: Stampeders in “Sweet City Woman”

F. Answer: Burton Cummings
