VS.YOUNG TALENTS

HANS BOODT.We would like you to meet 5 students of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Why? Because they’ve used the platform of Hans Boodt as a format for their fanciful magazine. And as a creative company, we always encourage young talent! In the second year of their studies Lifestyle & Design, they devised the concept for a magazine under the guidance of photographer Ari Versluis. With “identity” as a central theme, the quirky characters of our mannequins obviously couldn’t be missing in the editorial of Awkward Magazine, Issue M1015. With pride we present the result!

6. Hans Boodt #4

AKWARD MAGAZINE.Our curiosity was aroused while shooting the Street Style section for Awkward Magazine. We visited the Nishicon convention in Haarlem, where Japanese comic and cartoon fans came together, dressed as their favorite character. Amused, fascinated and moved, we listened to their stories. It was so much more than just a big dress up party. You could actually feel the love in the air! That brought us to an important question: who or what determines your identity? What defines you? Your hobbies? Your favorite anime character maybe? Even the code on your buttocks? The driven people at Hans Boodt take matters into their own hands and manage to create a diversity of characters. Is this also possible with real humans? In other words, is it possible to actually create or change an identity of a breathing human being? On the other hand, mannequins don’t breathe, do not have genitals and sometimes don’t even have a real face. Does this mean a lack of identity? We doubt it… Find out and enjoy reading!

Beat union Interview

Beat unionHans Boodt’s exclusive interview with one of Europe’s most popular and most discussed rockbands!

“We just want to say: Express yourself in any way you like and be all you can be”

“First of all; congratulations on your new album! Is it going to be another hit record?”

“Sounds logical. So what ex-actly is the message you want to send out to your fans?”

Interviewna

How many Beat Union fans

are there in the world to-

day? The number grows every

day as more and more people

discover this unique British

underground band that not only

has a massive effect on to-

day’s music business, but also

managed to create a whole new

fashion scene. Their statement

is clear: ‘be free of judgment and

rules and ignore all clichés!’

“We want to challenge young

people to be pure in an im-

pure world. Don’t just follow

the crowd, but dare to be dif-

ferent. Music is a great way

to create your own world and

that also involves creating

an identity in life. We just

want to say: express yourself

in any way you like and be all

you can be. If your next door

neighbour doesn’t approve of

your lifestyle, so be it. It’s

YOUR life!”

“How does it feel to be such an inspiration for young people?”

“Well, it’s sort of a mixed

feeling really. It’s obviously

a

a

very exciting but it’s also

terrifying at the same time.

We stimulate freedom of ex-

pression but we’re also aware

of the fact that we’re sort of

creating a new scene. There’s

a danger in that, because it’s

been proven that people usu-

ally just want to fit in some-

where. On the other hand, we

represent a group of people

that hasn’t found an outlet

to relate to or identify with

so from that point of view

we’re sort of a safety net for

certain people. And of course,

that’s a good thing!”

“Well, we’ll just have to

wait and see. This album is

very different from our pre-

vious one, so we have no idea

what the effect will be on our

fans. The thing about suc-

cess is there’s always a por-

tion of people who don’t want

you to chance. That puts you

in a strange position because

we’re always hungry to try new

things. That’s what we do!

We do our own thing and send

out the message we believe

in. If people don’t like it,

that’s part of the game. Our

game! But we think it’s our

best album so far, so we have

our hopes up (laughs).”

“We want to get better rather than to get bigger!”

“True. People sometimes need a helping hand to find their identity. What inspires you guys?”

“Do fashion and style play a role in your success?”

“London has a fantastic underground world where you’ll find us as much as we can”

“That’s a difficult one to

explain. We try to cre-

ate our own identity and our

style is definitely a huge

part of that. It’s not just

what you wear though, it’s

also how you wear it. As we

said before: we don’t follow

the crowd and we dare to be

different. People seem to like

that about us so you may con-

clude that our style is part

of our success. But we nev-

er expected to create a whole

new fashion scene (laughs).

I guess it’s the world we

live in. When do you become

a

a

w

ww

“That’s difficult to express

in words, because our inspi-

ration comes from all the

little things. London has a

fantastic underground world

where you’ll find us as much

as we can. But we also like to

watch a good fashion show. We

obviously don’t copy styles,

on the contrary even. But we

do want to see what drives

people: the bars they go to,

the music they listen to, the

clothes they wear... With-

out even knowing, that’s the

best inspiration you can get!”

a fashion icon? There’s no

straight answer to that. Look

at Gaga: the crazier she does,

the more people adore her. I

meana, come on... If wearing

a meat dress is fashion, then

everything is possible. And

maybe that’s exactly the mes-

sage people want to hear.”

a

“Good point. Doesn’t that

massive influence scare you

sometimes?”

might answer the question

right. It’s not about look-

ing good, it’s about feeling

good and if looking good makes

you feel better then my advise

would be: choose your outfit

wisely (laughs again)!”

a

couraging people to wear a

Gaga’s message had nothing to

do with encouraging people to

wear a meat dress. She wants

to shock people and by do-

ing that she points out that

the only style you can cre-

ate is your own style. Don’t

get us wrong; we don’t feel

the urge of shocking people

and we definitely don’t want

to be remembered by our cra-

zy clothing. We just want to

make great music and for that,

you need to feel good about

yourself and I think that

“So what can we expect from

you guys in the future?”

“Tricky one. Never try to pre-

dict the future! Let’s put it

like this: we will keep on do-

ing what we love and we’ll try

to get better every day. For

us, it’s not about the fame

or about getting bigger. It´s

about getting better and we´ll

just have to see where that

leaves us in the next couple

of years. We try not to forget

to enjoy every minute of our

success because we realize how

lucky we are. But we also won’t

adjust to what people expect

from us, because then we would

simply betray ourselves. So

let’s just hope that standing

out from the crowd will be the

new ‘normal’ standard from now

on.”

“It´s about getting better and we´ll just have to see where that leaves us in the next couple of years.”
