Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, July 28 th 2019 Race 1 #6 Jack’s Memory #2 Stormy Vision #3 Classy Vision #5 Triple Sevens #6 JACK’S MEMORY takes the plunge in for $7,500 after failing to threaten against $40,000/Ontario Sired foes. She figures to be tough in a race with no standouts. #2 STORMY VISION looked like a winner last time out when facing non-threes but hung and missed by a head. She was a vet scratch from a non-three on the inner turf on July 3 and now returns here for her first start in over six weeks. #3 CLASSY VISION took a shot against $25,000 three year olds on the turf last time out but was never involved. Two starts back at this level she was making up ground on a lone speed winner who opened up a huge margin early then tired late, making the rally look more impressive on paper than it actually was. #5 TRIPLE SEVENS tried turf in her return to Toronto on July 10 and managed to make up some ground in the stretch. She tries Tapeta for the first time since 2016; her two-turn races in Winnipeg were good efforts. Race 2 #1 Ka Gee Gee #4 Mr. Diffley #6 Seventh Wonder #3 Papa D #1 KA GEE GEE scratched off of the also-eligibles on Saturday in favour of this spot. Although facing males, this is not a salty group and her April 20 and June 1 efforts are likely good enough to win; blinkers are added. #4 MR. DIFFLEY has run okay in both of his starts to date against tough competition. He also adds blinkers today. #6 SEVENTH WONDER stalked the pace and chased to the wire when kicking off his season on July 3. He now makes his turf debut for his second start of the season. #3 PAPA D exits the same July 3 race as Seventh Wonder, in which he set the pace and was run down late. He had a good run on turf last August. Race 3 #2 Big Drink of Water Best Bet #1 Olympic Runner #3 Souper Success #6 Corduroy Road #2 BIG DRINK OF WATER was a three time Stakes winner on synthetic last year, closing off the season with a respectable fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint with the widest post. He has been training in Chicago in preparation for his three year old debut. #1 OLYMPIC RUNNER seemed to appreciate the cutback to a sprint last time out, closing with some traffic and getting up to beat older in a first level allowance. There should be plenty of pace to close into here. #3 SOUPER SUCCESS was pressured on the front end and missed late when second in the Bold Ruckus on turf last time out. He will likely be better off sitting off of the pace today. #6 CORDUROY ROAD was outfinished by an impressive closer when facing $40,000/Ontario Sired non-threes on June 23. He has had quite a few excuses this year; candidate to rebound. Race 4 #7 Fast Negotiations #3 Four Knights #2 Detroit Steel (IRE) #8 Tap the Mojo #7 FAST NEGOTIATIONS had been failing to threaten when rebounding with a big second for $25,000 on July 13. Although entered for a tag, that compact field was likely tougher than this race and he did get on a roll after a few starts last season. #3 FOUR KNIGHTS was an easy non-three winner in his local debut, then put in a good run in a solid group of $20,000 foes on June 14. He cuts back to a sprint in his first start off of a claim. #2 DETROIT STEEL (IRE) had a troubled trip but was not embarrassed when finishing seventh in the Grade 1 Highlander. He’s a very honest colt who should fit well getting back to this level. #8 TAP THE MOJO will make his first start since September here. He looked good breaking his maiden in a sprint last August, then stretched out to a mile and had a wide trip in his final start, showing finishing interest. Race 5 #9 Pinky Dude #5 Giant Critic #6 Storm Chart #7 Victory Given #9 PINKY DUDE is one of several debut runners here. Society’s Chairman is out of an unraced dam who has produced five foals to race; most are not worth noting but she did throw multiple Stakes winner Sans Sousi, who won as a juvenile. #5 GIANT CRITIC was completely wiped out at the start in his debut on July 7, but came running late and was beaten only 2 ½ lengths for place. There’s certainly a case to be made for a better showing today. #6 STORMY CHART pressed the pace in that July 7 race but was no match for the eventual dominant winer and faded to fourth. The blinkers were put on for that start and will quickly be removed. #7 VICTORY GIVEN has been sent up from Laurel where he has been up-and- down. He has experience to his credit. Race 6 #1 Hey Howie #11 Crawl From the Bar #6 Epilogue #10 Downy Boy #1 HEY HOWIE ran a good fourth in a very tough starter allowance on the inner turf last time out. He now gets to face $25,000 non-threes, the first time he’s been in this condition so far this season. #11 CRAWL FROM THE BAR went down to Kentucky for a pair of races, failing to threaten on the dirt at Churchill but rebounding with a good runner up finish on the Ellis Park turf in a first level allowance. He drops in for $23,500 for his return to Toronto. #6 EPILOGUE was disqualified from a non-three win in a Tapeta sprint two back, then evened out after looking dangerous in a turf route last time. Both of his turf efforts have been good runs and the cutback should help. #10 DOWNY BOY angled wide and rallied to win his non- two on the inner turf last time off, narrowly holding off a

June 23. He has had quite a few excuses this year; candidate to rebound.

Although entered for a tag, that compact field was likely tougher than this race and he did get on a roll after a few starts last season. #3 FOUR KNIGHTS was an easy non-three winner in his local debut, then put in a good run in a solid group of $20,000 foes on June 14. The blinkers were put on for that start and will quickly be removed. #7 VICTORY GIVEN has been sent up from Laurel where he has been up-and-down.

#11 CRAWL FROM THE BAR went down to Kentucky for a pair of races, failing to threaten on the dirt at Churchill but rebounding with a good runner up finish on the Ellis Park turf in a first level allowance. foe who had tons of traffic in the stretch and almost certainly should have won. The only poor effort this gelding has had this year came on May 26 when getting a very wide trip.

Race 7 #3 Google It #4 Lakeside Park #5 Frac Attack #8 Yola #3 GOOGLE IT will debut here. Giant Gizmo gelding is out of a mare who won at first asking as a juvenile; full brother Handsome Like Me was a two year old winner. #4 LAKESIDE PARK has been working steadily since May. Old Forester gelding is the first foal to race for a dam who competed only once, beaten less than a length in her lone start. #5 FRAC ATTACK took a solid bump at the start of his debut but made up good ground in the stretch. He will hopefully get a cleaner beginning. #8 YOLA is another debut runner. Society’s Chairman colt is out of a mare who won as a two year old; her two other foals to race are both juvenile winners.

Race 8 #1 Pumpkin Rumble #6 Tiz a Slam #5 Bourbon Resolution #4 Souper Tapit #1 PUMPKIN RUMBLE put in a competitive third place finish when kicking off his season in the Dominion Day on June 30. Solid distance runner may be better with a start under his belt. #6 TIZ A SLAM is looking for three in a row after wire to wire wins in the Louisville at Churchill and the Singspiel locally. If he is able to control the pace again he will likely be tough once again. #5 BOURBON RESOLUTION made his turf in the Wise Dan at Churchill on June 15, dropping further back than normal for him, racing wide and finishing eighth by less than five lengths. A better trip could put him in the hunt. #4 SOUPER TAPIT narrowly won the Eclipse back in May, then looked like the one to beat in the Dominion Day but was scratched from that spot. In his lone extended distance attempt he finished third against second level allowance company at Keeneland.

Race 9 #8 Brass Compass #2 Cooler Mike #3 Glacier #7 O’Kratos #8 BRASS COMPASS kicked off his season racing on the front end, not his normal running style, and coming up a clear second best behind Dixie’s Gamble. He returned with a solid run in a five furlong turf dash; this should be more in his wheelhouse. #2 COOLER MIKE ran very well to be third in a very tough race on turf last time out. He cuts back to a sprint on the Tapeta here, and the blinkers will be back on for the first time this season. #3 GLACIER closed into a collapsing pace in the Jacques Cartier on May 4, finishing fourth, then disappointed as the favourite when drawing in as a MTO in an off-turf race on May 26. He was a vet scratch from a $40,000 race on June 22; a return to his best can win this. #7 O’KRATOS came up empty when kicking off his season around two turns on

May 18. He returns over two months later as a first time gelding; he showed that he had the talent last year.

Race 10 #5 Slip Kid #1 Ethanol #2 R U Watchingbud #4 Dani’s Victory #5 SLIP KID has been able to beat a few of these foes in his two most recent starts. There is not an abundance of speed here for a 5 ½ furlong race and he figures to be on or near the pace. #1 ETHANOL was closing well but ran out of racetrack when second behind Slip Kid last time out. His only “poor” effort this year came two back in a very tough $25,000 race on a day where a strong homestretch headwind made closing difficult. #2 R U WATCHINGBUD had a beautiful pace setup when winning two starts back, but was in too tough in the Early Bird Starter Handicap on May 29. He returns after a two month break. #4 DANI’S VICTORY raced well to be third behind Constantino and Love That Lute in his season opener, but was on a speed favouring turf last time out and failed to threaten. He may be able to improve here.

Race 11 #9 Boomba Brad #6 Wincredible Star #5 Bear Treasure #1 Eyes Forward #9 BOOMBA BRAD angled onto a dead rail midway around the turn and chased evenly in the stretch, reacting a bit greenly to the whip on June 21. He stretches out to a route here. #6 WINCREDIBLE STAR has been picking up checks and running well since stretching out around two turns. His last two Beyers are solid for this level and he is arguably the one to beat. #5 BEAR TREASURE returned off of a long layoff with a well beaten runner up finish on the turf at Tampa in May. He didn’t run too badly on the Tapeta back in 2017. #1 EYES FORWARD has yet to show much in two starts so far and now takes the drop into the bottom level. He may improve with experience.

Race 12 #7 Seguimi #4 Timeskip #9 Argentium #2 Nestleton Hush #10 Prideofdistinction #7 SEGUIMI ran a big race when beaten a head in a first level allowance for three year olds last time out. He now faces older company but gets down to compete with $40,000/Ontario Sired runners. #4 TIMEKSIP rallied well to be third at a mile on turf last time out. He had three tries around two turns on the Tapeta last year, all three were solid runs. #9 ARGENITUM had a good pace to close into and rallied to be second last time out going seven furlongs. He returns on two weeks rest. #2 NESTLETON HUSH had a wide trip and came up empty when stalking a very easy pacesetter in his season opener. He may be better now that he has a start into him. #10 PRIDEOFDISTINCTION was just ahead of Timeskip when finishing second on July 7 in his first start of the season. Most of his best races have come in Tapeta routes.
