H OPE L U THE RA N C HUR CH , NY
From Intern Arin
It’s that time of the year when scrolling through Facebook I am
surrounded by all the posts about graduation and how hard it is going to be
to say goodbye to a certain college and all the friends that come along with
that. As I was going through these posts, all of them had quotes to go along
with pictures upon pictures, and then I stumbled upon this quote:
“How lucky I am to have something
that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
– Winnie the Pooh
It immediately hit home for me. As I prepare to say goodbye to Hope,
I realize just how lucky I am to have spent the year here. I am struck by how
quickly this year has gone by and wish it would slow down just a little bit.
When I first started back in August, I thought that June seemed so far
away, but somehow I blinked and here we are.
Coming into this year I knew that Hope was a special place. I had
met not only Shawn at LCLC but also a lot of our youth, and knew that I
was in for an amazing year. An amazing year is exactly how I would explain
my year here, although it is hard to find the right words to fully explain
what this year has meant to me. As I sit here I have a montage of the year
playing through my head with amazing memories one after another. There
is not a day that I’ve spent at Hope that hasn’t left me without a smile on
my face, although some days it may have been harder to see than others,
and I realize just how lucky I am.
I’ve gained not only another support system, new friends, but more
importantly a new home with one of the best church families any one could
ask for. I don’t think I will ever be able to find the right words to express
how grateful I am for all that Hope has done for me. Each of you has
welcomed me so warmly into this community and has made this one of the
hardest goodbyes I’ve had to make. I am truly blessed.
So how do you prepare to say goodbye to a place that you now
consider another home, I’m honestly not sure but it’s not easy, that much I
know. I would give anything to stay another year, or even for forever, and
trust me I’ve tried to figure out how to make that happen, but I know that I
have to start this next chapter of my life. Just as God called me here to
Hope, he is calling me to Philadelphia to continue my discernment and the
process to become a pastor. I know that when I am home I will be back to
visit, and because of that I guess this is not a goodbye but rather a see you
soon. Thank you for giving me something that makes saying goodbye so hard
and see you soon. -Arin

Opportunities to Give/Serve
Why? Because! A Social Gathering for a Worthy Cause Several WNY Pastors are taking over a local restaurant for an
afternoon for a great cause. On Sunday, May 1 from 11-3pm, 15% of
the bill and 100% of the tips generated at The Tavern at Windsor
Park (on Transit Road) will support Lutheran Charities of WNY
and the agencies they support. The best part: All of the servers will
be Lutheran Pastors, including Pastor Shawn. This will be a high
energy, wonderful event and you will not want to miss it.
Men’s Service Weekend at LCLC The Men of Hope, Brother’s Keeper, Inc., are headed to LCLC from May 20-22
for another round of roofing and ‘ground’ projects at the camp. Many of our
youth are growing to love LCLC and are experiencing the love of God there.
Help us make the camp the best place it can be for the hundreds of kids that
will encounter God’s grace there this summer. In an effort to make this
intergenerational, we hope some dads and grandpas will bring their sons and
grandsons as well. To discuss detailed plans and tools to bring, we will have a
meeting of the minds at 9:30am on Sunday, May 15 in Pastor Shawn’s office.
Camperships Last year the youth of Hope went to over $10,000 worth of
camp programming. For many families, especially those
with multiple children, camp simply isn’t an option at over
$400/week. For that reason, both Hope and LCLC are
committed to making sure every youth who wants to go to
camp is financially able. To help, please consider making a
contribution to our campership fund. Generally a
campership is around $120/child/week. Any donation is
gratefully appreciated and will make a tremendous impact
on a young person’s faith life.

A Future With Hope At a meeting this April, Hope’s council and a newly formed steering committee laid the
ground work for some recent conversation regarding the future of Hope. Notes from that
meeting can be found elsewhere in this newsletter, but we wanted to make sure you knew
how we could help. This Summer Hope plans to raise the first $100,000 of our campaign “A
Future With Hope.” The specific focus of this portion of the campaign is to address our curb
appeal, parking lot, and serve as seed money for what the congregation will determine comes
next. To help support this bold endeavor please consider contributing some of the following
ways:
1. Donate. To make a gift to the campaign, simply write a check to “A Future With Hope”
and place it in the offering basket or drop it off in the main office of church. Contributions
will be recorded over the life of the campaign, and donors recognized appropriately as
God’s vision for Hope becomes a reality. 2. Adirondack Chairs. This Spring, Hope is building and selling sturdy and stylish
Adirondack chairs perfect for the lake, the campsite, the backyard or porch. The chairs,
which retail for $250, will be available for $150 a chair, $275 for 2 chairs, or $500 for 4
chairs. An order form will soon be available in your email or on the church facebook page
as well as in hard copy form at church. With enough help, we hope to have all the chairs
built by Memorial Day Weekend. 3. Golf Tournament. On Sunday, August 21 at 12pm foursomes from around the area
will tee off at Turkey Run for a nine hole scramble tournament & banquet. Details are
still being worked out, but mark your calendars today and if you are interested in helping
plan the event please contact Pastor Shawn. 4. Niagara Chocolates. Boxes of Niagara Chocolates are available to sell at your local
business, place of employment, or school. Please sign the boxes out of the main office at
church. Each box of 50 bars sold at $1 raises $25.

A Future With Hope
On Sunday, April 17 members of Hope gathered for a listening post
around the future of Hope Lutheran Church. The reason for the meet-
ing started with a conversation Church Council began in January. Af-
ter seeing how richly God has been blessing Hope, we began to ask how
God might be calling us to respond in order to best live into the future
God has in store for us.
The listening post began with a conversation at tables around how we have seen God at work
among us. Highlights included our various outreach ministries from Brother’s Keeper to the
recent VA drive, the quality and diversity of our worship, and many answers relating to youth
and faith formation. Members who have been at Hope the longest as well as newer members
agreed that God is most certainly at work among us. From there, Pastor Shawn asked if our
ministries may have outgrown our current facility. While we are certainly making do, when
you reflect on the card table in the offices that serves as a Sunday School room, the quilters
who move their supplies from one end of church to the other every week because they no longer
fit in the Quilt Room, and the constant setting up and taking down of tables in our parish hall
because of the many ways we use the space, the answer is yes. But while this may come as
news to some, the founders of Hope saw this day coming. Pastor Shawn shared with those
gathered the original architectural drawing that included plans for the church to build on in
two phases: first for a Christian education wing, and again for a new sanctuary. Perhaps they
were thinking of us today. May we be so bold as to think about the church we’re building 55
years from now.
After the discussion Tim Sonner and Scott Bley addressed those gathered. First, Mr. Sonner
described what a multiuse building on the east lawn might look like. Items highlighted were
spaces for our groups to run and crowds to assemble as well as an outreach center for the
under privileged and small group space. Scott Bley then described the immediate next steps
and introduced the campaign: A Future With Hope. The Future with Hope committee has yet
to lay out the goals or path forward, but we do know that plans include raising $100,000 this
summer and an additional $250,000 starting in the fall.
Everyone is certainly aware of the gravity of this conversation, but as daunting as it may seem
we are still excited. We’re excited about what God is up to among us. We recognize that we
have been distinctly blessed with energy and passion and youthfulness and life. And we know
that God isn’t done with us yet. We only ask that God would strengthen our bodies and our
hearts that we may listen carefully for his will and boldly follow where God is calling us to go.

Julie Tingue will be leading our First Sunday Class this May beginning at 9am on Sunday, May 1 for all
of our Sunday School age children (3 years old-12th grade).
Confirmation Class & Confirmation Date for 9th Graders
Our final Confirmation Class of 2015-2016 will take place on Wednesday, May 4th at 6:30pm. We will be

Cole (5/8), Damin and Anna) will take place on Sunday, May 15 at the 10:30am service. Please join us
for a reception honoring the confirmands immediately after the worship service.
Confirmation Bibles
Each confirmation year Hope gives Lutheran Study Bibles to the confirmands. Prior to giving them,
each Bible will be available for you as a member of Hope to sign with your favorite Bible verse(s) high-
lighted. Past confirmands can tell you what a precious gift passing on the faith that’s meant so much to
us can be to them as they embark on the adult journey of their faith. The Bibles will be placed in Miss
Arin and Mr. Chris’ office adjacent to the main office.
Congregational Picnic
The annual congregational picnic & Sunday School year end celebration will take place immediately fol-
lowing the Youth Sunday worship service (9:30am worship) on Sunday, June 5th. We will be cooking our
famous Chicken BBQ, which will be available for $4.00/half. Please sign up in the weeks ahead for the
chicken servings so that we have an accurate count. Please bring a side to share for the picnic. This is
always a great way to end another Sunday School year together.

Our last Sunday School class of the 2015-2016 school year will take place on Sunday, May 22. We will
resume Sunday School following the summer holiday after Labor Day in September. As we wrap up an-

Breathe. From Chris LiPuma, Youth Director
Breathe. Take a moment to inhale, watch as your stomach expands and the air fills your lungs. Breathe.
Something as simple as breathing we take for granted every single day. When was the last time you even
thought about breathing? As a kid I loved to swim in Lake Ontario up near Fort Niagara. At a young age I
loved the water, and it didn't matter the temperature or how murky the water was. You could bet I would be
the first one in. I still remember this day so vividly even though it was when I was just a boy:
It was a typical summer evening and we were at the beach swimming. Being the dare devil kid I was I decided
to swim out a little further than I normally did on this night, past the buoys. I could hear my dad yelling to me
to stay in close but I just pretended I couldn't hear him and kept bobbing up and down and moving further out
into the lake. That’s when everything went wrong. As I continued to bob up and down I was unaware that I
swam into sea weed...probably why there were buoys in the first place. As I hit the bottom I realized I had
tangled myself in the sea weed and was beginning to run out of air. I started panicking, thrashing all about on
the lake bottom. I remember the sheer terror and panic taking over my body as I began to run out of
air. Being a kid when I found myself in trouble I would just scream for my Dad, but he was a ways away on
the beach and I was on the bottom of the lake. I remember my body, the way it felt as I struggled in the sea
weed, the feeling of having no air, no life in my lungs. Just about the time I had given up all hope I became
free. I was able to move my limbs again and without any hesitation I pushed as hard off the bottom floor as I
could and darted for the surface. When my head reached above the water I gasped for air. I still remember
that feeling of taking that breath, how amazing it was—No other feeling can compare. I sat there in the water
breathing slow and deep breaths. How good those felt! I truly appreciated each breath. In and out. In and out.
Maybe you've had a similar experience, seems everyone has a near drowning or near death experience (the
way my dad tells it I was only under the water for a few seconds, but for me it seemed like eternity...ok maybe
I was freaking out a bit and overplayed it in my head. But to me it was scary!) But as I reflect on that day I
still see that kid struggling in the seaweed on the lake floor. I look at my life and realize not much has
changed! Instead of sea weed, life, responsibilities, deadlines are grabbing at us. Maybe you have that feeling
too, you're stuck on the lake floor desperately hoping for that next breath of life. The harder we try and get out
it seems to only make things worse. But it was only until I stopped the thrashing, the panicking and became
still until I was able to free myself.
The human experience has changed over time. Today it seems we are blasted with all this information being
thrown at us and it is sometimes hard to decipher everything. We have so many responsibilities and it seems
that there is never enough time in the day. But picture Sunday morning for a moment, how still it is, you can
say maybe it’s the only time you are able to take that deep breath...unless your Pastor Shawn. But that gift of
slowing down and taking those deep breaths are available every single day. In your storms and in your chaos
take those deep breaths, find that inner peace, be the eye in that storm. We have a God who has breathed life
into you and who is making you new! Sometimes we just need to stop and just breathe. Taking a breath is a
miracle in itself, and I pray that you may see that. I pray that in our crazy and hectic lives we can just stop and
take that deep breath we all need.
Breathe. Inhale. Exhale. Life is good.
"The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the almighty gives me life" — Job 33:4

more than ever before! It helped us to raise about $1300 for preschool programming.
The end to another preschool year is quickly approaching! We will end our year with our grad-

still have a lot to do)!
We would like to thank all of our parents, first, for choosing Hope Preschool for your child this

school year without your support!
While its sad to say goodbye to these children whom we’ve been getting to know, we’re also ex-

not too early! Grab your application from the church office & reserve your child’s spot for Sep-
tember.
As always, please consider making a donation to our financial assistance program. Your dona-
tions truly make a difference in assisting children come to Hope at a discount, while not bur-
