Prologue
Nostalgia must be one of the most prevailing emotions for human beings, with so many exquisite poems composed since ancient times.'The spring wind breezes, greening the earth of Jiangnan. Nonetheless only I desire to know, when I would return at a beautiful moonlight night.' As we have recited since we did not even understand it.
Once Milan Kundera had interpreted "nostalgia" in his view. 'The Greek word for "return" is nostos. Algos means "suffering." So nostalgia is the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return.'
Litterateurs obsessed with somewhere where they wanted to 'return'. Hometown it might be. But somehow 'hometown' sounds too abstract to rationally define. As time goes on, I have gradually grasped the profound meaning of nostalgia. It is more reminiscence rather than a specific region, not even the very spot where people had been born, though surely the feeling is attached to some place in some way.So it is the place where my mother and I took a walk as well as enjoyed snacks that I've missed, not the place itself, where there are only high-rise buildings now. Memory matters, so does the coherence of our memory and the exact place that we have remembered still. Here we come to a critical problem which is so common in China today that everyone could tell. Vast chunks of cities had been demolished completely then rebuilt, and the places which carried with the reminiscence would only exist in our minds, and then get lost as it fading from the memory. Every generation is confused, all experiencing a tumultuous period of identity crisis. Nowhere compels our emotion, which arouse a kind of nostalgia that we could come back spatially, but never really be back.
But no one would like to be a spiritual wanderer always.
In my own shire, if I was sadHomely comforters I had:
The earth, because my heart was sore,Sorrowed for the son she bore;
And standing hills, long to remain,Shared their short-lived comrade's pain.
And bound for the same bourn as I,On every road I wandered by,
Trod beside me, close and dear,The beautiful and death-struck year:
Whether in the woodland brownI heard the beechnut rustle down,And saw the purple crocus paleFlower about the autumn dale;Or littering far the fields of MayLady-smocks a-bleaching lay,And like a skylit water stood
The bluebells in the azured wood.

OLD RIVER IN NEW CONTEXTUrban Design for Social Integration and Multi-values Co-existeence in Xinchang
The project focused mainly on bringing up a proposal, trying to solve the problem of social segregation, which often triggered by gated communities or non-walkable streets in China. Hence people from all backgrounds could live in a harmonious community. To build up the HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL IDENTITY RECOGNITION of a watertown is the crucial task, for which we expected to build up a walking trail system along remaining river, connecting all the popular spots, which would be rejuvenated or redeveloped at first.

Waterside Public Space
The function of traffic is mostly relied on roads now, rivers have been disused or landfilled to build up roads and high-rise buildings.
Departure, arrival, sellling, purchasing, chatting, or strolling, all happened along its riverside.

SHIKUMEN, A LIVING OLD SHANGHAIUrban Regenertion and Planning for Residential District in Lilong Area
Shikumen, or Lilong is a word with profound meaning for people in Shanghai, which not only refers to a specific kind of dwellings, but also implies an ordeal of wars that all Chinese had went through but meanwhile a golden era when Shanghai was famous as Oriental Paris.Nowadays, the turmoil and the wars have faded away while Shanghai undergoing rapid urbanization, but the locals have not immediately thrown themselves into the modern lifestyle and confined their lives in high-rising residential buildings, massive shopping malls and supermarkets. Instead, they still enjoy their lives in open space along a street with small shops, just like it here on East Yuhang Street.Though the East Yuhang block would be redeveloped as a new residential district with a planned plot ratio, which must be above 2, I hope the beloved street and the special spatial form of Shikumen could be conserved.

Fence walls
Built in different period, the fence walls act as obstacles, with no public space between different communities nor places shared by their residents, hence the social isolation follows.
Motorized traffic
The motorized traffic volume on the cross roads is not much, while there are mainly shops on both sides of the streets, especially the East Yuhang Road, leading to gathered pedestrians, walking on the road, whose spatial scale is pleasant. Though the road is not quite walkable, with conflicts between cars and pedestrians.

It's quite clear that what damage a gated dwelling district could do to a popular street, which carrying with the Genius Loci of the community.Whatever would be changed in the blocks, the East Yuhang Road should be kept as the most valuable part of this area.

COLLEGE CAMPUS, WITNESS TO OUR DAYSChangable Architecture for College Life
The architecture were located in our university. The days spent in University might be quite unforgettable for its graduates, especially for those who have came from remote places of less-developed areas and studied for years in a metropolis like Beijing or Shanghai.I hope the architecture would be a place to which the revisit by alumna or alumni might bring back the memory of their best days of youth. It would allowed people to shape itself according to people's needs. It felt like a witness to our days, whenever the images flashing back that we being high-spirited and vigorious, dreaming our dreams, practicing English in the morning, walking around with our love, advertising for school clubs, giving a performance or enjoying the lunch break, we would have got a place to ponder on the past.

Single Event
Single events happening every day
We concluded different events happening as our daily routine, and I wonder could those things happen at one single place? If so, it would no doubt become a special spot for every student who has ever studied in Tongji. What if the space of a place were changable? All we expect is a place which is suitable for what we want to do, and it seems that vertical shifting boards and folding devices could make it.
There are benches or teapoys by the river for people to stay.
In the morning, some students r e a d E n g l i s h a l o u d b y the r iver, leading to some embarrassment sometimes.
Most students' associa-tions advertise at the gate of the canteen, which is the nearest one to the classrooms and the library, making it pretty busy.

CLASSICAL GARDEN, LIVING LIKE A POEMVilla Design for Exchange Professor in Campus
The villa would be built on an island in Tongji University for an exchange professor who would live there for months on an academic visit.
Though it were a modern architecture, I hope it could deliver a sense of belonging by presenting the character of traditional Chinese culture, to which all the educated people in China might resonate. And I found it that the classical Chinese garden was the best choice, which not only has been the spiritual sustenance for hundreds of years, but could also coordinate with the surrounddings.

The surroundings on site remind people of the traditional China, the old China which has been lasting for thousands of years despite of the brutal wars, the insane revolution, the high-rising buildings and massive urban constructions in Shanghai. It is exactully what would arouse the feelings of nostalgia for all the Chinese.
The island would not be totally privatized for the villa, instead, I expected it that the firm ground would be left to the public as it has always been.
The villa would become part of the factors which create an overwhelming atmosphere of the old China, presenting the characteristics of classical Chinese gardens.

RESEARCH PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES
In the second part of the third academic year, I took a course of Urban Stimulation and Planning, utilizing Netlogo, a multi-agent stimulation programme, to seek to model the cities' functioning in many ways. (URL:http://caup-tlab.tongji.edu.cn/VETC/show.aspx?info_lb=532&flag=387&info_id=1336)
With the guidance of our professor ZHU Wei, my teammates and I developed a derivate programme based on Netlogo, which could assess the service level of roads in a city.Though the parameters and the arithmetic could have been more elaberated if given us more time as we digged into the issue of factors affecting urban roads, it has been presented that we could make use of some programming tools, custimized development in this case, to study our cities, and accept opinions from it.
loadfile enable users to set parameters in advance T h e p a r a m e t e r s should be according to the research or study of the quantitive indexes of the factors which affect humans' choice in cities.
It was firstly used in a simplified and abstract area. The line weight reflects the service condition of a street or a road. The thicker the line is, the relative traffic volume is heavier. The relative traffic volume number is not just the traffic flow, but divided by thw width of the road, which is set by the road grade.
set the ratio that every turtle carries and the proportion of peopel's departure places in different blocks with various landuse.
What presented above is the application on a real project of a master urban planning. As we could see, the line weight of a road situated on the northeastern of the city might be over loaded so that planners might do their research and figure if the road system should be improved or it is the layout of land use that is to blame.
