Dear E-Colleagues:

(1) ATTACHMENT I below is a reminder of our Columbia University seminar, when Dr. Greg Cole, Principal Investigator of the GLORIAD project, and the Director of the Center for International Networking Initiatives at The University of Tennessee will make a very interesting speech about the “Supporting the Globalization of Science and Education with an Advanced, Optical Network Encircling the Northern Hemisphere.” in the evening of this coming December 19th (Wednesday) at the Faculty House of the Columbia University.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SEMINARon KNOWLEDGE, TECHNOLOGY, and SOCIAL SYSTEMS

Our next meeting of the Knowledge, Technology, and Social Systems seminar will take place at the Columbia University Faculty House on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 7 pm.  We are fortunate to have Greg Cole, the Principal Investigator of the GLORIAD project, and the Director of the Center for International Networking Initiatives at The University of Tennessee, to speak to us on:

GLORIAD:  Supporting the Globalization of Science and Education with an Advanced, Optical Network Encircling the Northern

Hemisphere

Building on early efforts by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in extending the Internet globally in the 1980s and 1990s, the Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development (GLORIAD - http://www.gloriad.org/) has been funded by the NSF ($20M) and government science ministries and private sector partners around the world ($240M) since 1997.  It provides high-speed, dedicated communications services for science, education and health research between communities globally (and connecting with nearly all US universities and federally-funded research facilities) - providing end-user capacities up to 1000 times that commonly available over today's commodity Internet - and to an end-user community numbering in the millions.

GLORIAD's evolution will be briefly described (since it's early work connecting US with Russia and China in the late 1990s) - with a focus on core principles, architecture, services, public/private partners and

future plans.  Special attention will be placed on how the advanced network is used to support science and education collaboration - from high energy physics, atmospheric science and climate change, health research to modern genomics research (and hundreds of other disciplines).   The talk will also describe recent work with partners in India, Singapore and Egypt in extending the partnership, connections and shared infrastructure within the Gulf region, in Southeast Asia and across the African continent.  Some discussion will be made about GLORIAD's decentralized model of operations and governance - and the case made for how this best serves the purpose of fostering continuous, flexible, community-driven innovation required for modern science infrastructure supporting collaboration globally.
