HISTORY• A Roman town called Arriaca, possibly founded by a pre-Roman culture, is known to

have been located in that region.

• The town of Guadalajara was founded by the Andalusians in the 8th century.

• During the 14th century, the Mendoza family was prominent in Guadalajara.

• In 1808, Guadalajara was taken by the French Army led by General Hugo and the city was destroyed.

• Guadalajara was the scene of much action during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).

• The Civil War and the heavy fighting around the city caused significant damage. After two decades of slow rebuilding, Guadalajara was included in 1959 in the development plans addressing the congestion of Madrid's industrial. Nowadays, Guadalajara is involved in urban development plans that are quickly increasing the population of the city.

THINGS TO DO• The Infantado Palace is one of the most iconic buildings in Guadalajara and Spain.

The palace was built by the wealthy and powerful Mendoza family.

• Most of Guadalajara's historical architecture is found along the Calle Mayor in the old district of the city. This pedestrian street is one of the city's main tourist stops and a great place for a stroll.

• The concatedral of Saint Mary is a mudejar church built in the XIV century.

• It is often a day trip destination for tourists.

• Concord Park is a vast green zone located in the city center, and the most representative park in the city.

• The Real Alcázar from Guadalajara is a fortification of the IX century, with an Andalusian origin. With the pass of the time, it was converted into a royal palace and a military barracks.
