Students Start-up Support System (S4)
REPORT:
4th Faculty Development Program – Design Engineering-1
Date: 3rd – 5th November 2014 Time: 09:30 to 17:30
Venue: 126, GTU Student Start-up Support System Co-Creation Center (S4-C3), ACPC
Building, LDCE Complex, Ahmedabad-15.
The FDP aims to provide opportunities to faculty members to enrich their idea developing through Empathy mapping, ideation mapping & to define problem & search solution through product development & Design canvas . The Programme also intends to develop the knowledge of participants for simulation with design problems in 3rd semester students in the relevant field for guiding and monitoring their progress. The FDP had an interactive brainstorming session between teams of Faculty Members from different institutes and fields.
Development of Design-Based And Project-Based Learning System at GTU: On 2nd February
2012 (The first cohort of 4-year degree engineering students graduated out in May 2012.),
GTU started the process of updating its syllabi. It was decided to develop a design-based
learning system. (In Chemical Engineering and in IT, one uses the term ‘Project-based
Learning’ for a similar idea.) So design orientation has been embedded into the new syllabi
from July 2013 and open-ended problems were included in the practical work. A strong 6-
semester spine of design engineering has been included in the syllabi. On 9th January 2014,
experts in design engineering from all over the country were invited to present their views
on how Universities could permeate design engineering into the whole of the engineering
syllabi. At GTU, the processes of designing the project at the Final year and of the spine of
Design Engineering, from third to eighth semester of degree engineering programs, have
been synchronized in the interest of seamless progression of learning.

This Report is of the 4th FDP for Design Engineering – 1. The first workshop was organized on
2 August 2014. Till now 404 Faculty Members have participated in the FDPs for Design
Engineering – 1.
Mentor for Helping in FDP:
1. Yash Saxena.
2. Rohit Radhakrishanan.
3. Prof.Bhaskar Bhatt. Civil Engineering Department. Sarvajanik College of Engineering
& Technology.
Day-1 3rd November 2014
The day started in a very enthusiastic way for 50 faculty member with an inspirational
address by the Vice-Chancellor of GTU.
The mentor Yash Saxena started to conduct FDP with different examples & discussed how to
make a strategy of design engineering through a systematic approach. He started with
Empathy mapping. (Reference: page 5 of http://files.gtu.ac.in/circulars/14Oct/01102014.pdf)
Empathy Mapping Canvas
What is Empathy Mapping, how to use it?
Empathy Map is the canvas where designer has to observe and understand the emotional
needs of the user, and on the basis of empathy of user he will think of the solution.
A User Empathy Map can help tee up a discussion about the needs a user has. The
discussion will be centred on what was observed, and what can be inferred about these user
groups’ beliefs and emotions. An empathy mapping is a tool which helps us summarize our
observations and take out unexpected ideas with no restriction & any bound.

After the session all participant Faculty Members started with putting their ideas on the
empathy canvas. Team wise they started to discuss about all ideas. They identified their
users and stakeholders, their activities and Happy & Sad stories. At the end of the day all
faculties gave small demonstrations about what they had done. This led to an active inter-
exchange of ideas.

Day-2: 4th November 2014
On the second day, the session started with Mr. Yash Saxena & Prof.Bhaskar.Bhatt
discussing the ideation canvas.
What is Ideation?
Ideation is the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas,
where an idea is understood as a basic element of thought that can be visual, concrete, or
abstract. Ideation comprises all stages of a thought cycle, from innovation, to development,
to actualization. As such, it is an essential part of the design process, both in education and
practice. He explained how things can be connected to get a better idea. He said that most
of the times, basically innovation is nothing but the combination of existing ideas.

Manual%20v11.0.pdf )
The Faculty Members discussed regarding problems with mentors and with different teams
to generalize the data. They also discussed about evaluation scheme of Design Engineering 1
and how to consider marking by internal and external Faculty Members during exam.

Day -3: 5th November 2014
Session about Product Development Canvas. (Reference: page 22 of
http://www.gtu.ac.in/circulars/14Oct/Learning-Design_thinking-Manual%20v11.0.pdf )
What is Product development canvas?
On this canvas, the participants were to fill the purpose of their product and the experience
of user when he uses their solution. Along with these things, product function, feature and
components of the products need to be filled in appropriate places on the canvas.
Thereafter one team acted as the customer of the other team’s product and discussed the
functions and features of the product for customer revalidation. Teams then redesigned
their products several times until their customer-team was satisfied. These steps were
repeated again and again with other teams as customers and redesign was done whenever
required so that a better design emerged.
In the afternoon session, Dr.Akshai Aggarwal, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of GTU, interacted
with all the participants. He also gave away certificates to participating Faculty Members.
The day ended with videography of participants with their canvas work.

Feedback from participants :
We learnt new things and also how to create innovative things, bring out innovative ideas
from our own minds.
Prof.Harsh Thakkar(Sal College of Engineering).
By such FDP we learn strategy to make innovative idea on new project platforms.
Prof. Patil Prafful G(Parul inst of Engg & Technology)
I would like to express my whole hearted wishes for you for the excellent and innovative
work, which impressed and impacted me very much.
Prof.Shobha Sharma (SAL Technical Campus)
I am very grateful to this FDP which will provide 3rd semester student brainstorming with no
limit to provide new idea for product design.
Prof.Rishikesh Bhavsar(SVBIT Gandhinagar)
From this subject students will be able to learn design of projects when they are in early
stage of engineering, which will provide a huge platform to create new ideas.
Prof.Dipen Modi (SCOE Ahmedabad)
The 3 days workshop held at GTU innovation council on Design Engineering -I was very
helpful. The main purpose is to provide the spark for the innovative idea development
process for the students and Faculty Members. Apart from the conventional study pattern,
this subject will help the students to bring their innovative ideas on the canvas in the proper
sequence and thus help them to develop innovative product design solution in the
advantageous form in the sense of advance, affordable, more efficient, more useful and
many more in the true sense, which will be again more helpful to the industry, society and
nation.
Prof R.R.Kapadia
