Portfolio by Technology Strategy Technology Center has been expanding its investment in productivityimprovement technology after modifying a part of the existingportfolio which was focused on core technology for new businesssince 2006. It is trying to pursue construction site-oriented R&D andhelp create profits and increase earnings of GS E&C.

Organization of Technology CenterGS E&C has been realizing VISION 2010 through the perfect harmony of people, technology and system. GS E&CTechnology Center is creating the technologies to realize the Best Partner & First Company and No. 1 GS E&C which hasbuilt the dreams and future of customers.

One of the biggest problems related to corporate R&D isthat many technologies developed with great humanresources and financial costs come to be buried withoutbeing applied to sites. No matter how finely it wascompleted and highly it was evaluated, there are manyobstacles before the technology is put to practical use atsites. In addition to, it is highly difficult to bear the risk toapply new technologies the construction sites having shortconstruction period and risks of accidents.

GS E&C Technology Center is distinctively organized togenerate the maximized synergy for putting the newly-developed technology to practical uses. That is to say, itintegrates Research Institute organization that is in chargeof technology development and Civil/ArchitectureEngineering organization that is in charge of putting thetechnology to practical uses, so the developed technology

can be transferred smoothly to Engineering organization.The transferred technology passes continuous inspectionand corrections through Technology Agent per technologyto be practically used, and the Research Institute receivesthe feedback of the result.

Technology Center with these technology supportorganizations has run Technical Safety Team since 2006with the will to make the construction accident rate zerothrough thorough safety education and preventionactivities. Technical Safety Team has executing its duty toinspect out sites at all times and report the result to therelated departments at early stage in order to maintain thesafety of our sites in due time.

Air-conditioning Pump Systems Using Geothermal HeatThis technology is an air-conditioning system, whichconsists of Ground Heat Exchanger and Heat Pump, andemits heat over the ground in cooling mode and suppliesto rooms with geothermal heat absorbed from the groundin heating mode.

The control system is located in the third floor lab in thematerial lab building, and enables us to get designtechnology and assessment technology which are requiredfor old and new buildings by long-term performanceanalysis.

Solar Power Generation System (BIPV System)This is a power generation using solar panels equippedwith the BIPV(Building Integrated Photo Voltaic) function.It can be used as semi-transparent roof over the atrium ofa building, and can supply a certain portion of the powerby the solar panels converting solar power to electricity. Performance analysis has been conducted for long-termoperation secure design capability, constructionengineering and maintenance engineering required forold and new buildings. The BIVP panels are installed onthe roof of research center and the controller is in thecontrolling room in the first floor machinery room.

Rain Recycling SystemsRain Recycling System (RRS) was resulted from theachievement of research project Environmentally-friendly Rain Recycling System Development (2004-2005), and was installed in the Research Institute. It isexpected to verify the performance of RRS which canprevent natural disaster and obtain water, and toaccumulate the technology.

Water is caught through the system on the roof of theresearch center, and the water treated by the systeminstalled in the basement is used in the toilet of thedormitory. The system consists of early rain-catch tank,original water tank, fre-filter, membrane filter, disinfectingchamber (UV).

Porous Concrete Pavement TechnologyPorous pavement is a pavement that rain which passedporous layer with porosity of 20% permeates to lowerground. It is an environmentally-friendly pavement thatmakes rain inflow to roadbed and underground water sothat microorganisms underground can breathe and streettrees can grow well. Especially, it is highly even and goodfor walking to be usually used for bicycle lanes, parkingspaces, squares and pedestrian roads. This technology is GS E&C unique and specializedtechnology that was developed for several years bybenchmarking Danish state-of-the-art technology. It hasbeen applied to design and construction of pavement onthe Construction Safety Research lab area, and is verifiedfor the road performance and long-term durability.

Treatment Technology of Non Point Source PollutionRain includes highly condensed polluted materials, sorequires facilities to treat it. The conventional facilitiesperform pollution prevention poorly and are difficult for themaintenance. Our technology treats rain in advance toprevent pollution and enables easier maintenance andconstruction with a minimum requirement of the land. This technology is applied to the Research Institutegardening land, and is expected to be used rain controlfacilities in regular flooding places, rain recycling facilitiesinside apartment and complex, and treatment of non pointsource pollution and rain drainage systems in resortcomplex.
