Greg Siner Sporting Group Breeder of the Year 2010

At the January meeting, the AKC Board approved the recommendation to allow the Irish Water Spaniel breed to participate in the Spaniel Hunting Test program. In order to differentiate the titles earned by Irish Water Spaniels in Retriever Hunting Tests versus Spaniel Hunting Tests, the Spaniel Hunting Test title will include the word ―Upland‖. For example, an Irish Water Spaniel will be awarded the title of Junior Hunter Upland (JHU) if it passes the Junior Hunter test four times in Spaniel Hunting tests.

Cover Story

By Cathy Shelby

Greg-You ARE the Breeder of the Year

It was a very exciting moment at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show in Long Beach, California on December 5, 2010. Sitting in the stands with Betty Wathne, Michelle Cummings, Stacy Duncan, Bobbie Duncan, Dorothy Line and Richard Liebaert, we all applauded wildly as Greg Siner led the line of group winners into the ring for the awarding of AKC Breeder of the Year. Around the ring were others supporting "our" entry, including Colleen and Jack McDaniel, Sally Lewis, Florence Blecher and Sam Junio. Greg looked splendid all decked out as the announcer read a list of his accomplishments that led to his selection for the Sporting Group. As each of the other breeder's history was announced, I looked at Greg, the only man in the group, and thought about

what had brought him to this place.

For those of you who have read Dan Sayers‘ fascinating, all-inclusive article in Dogs in Review, you have a pretty good idea. For those who have read what was printed in the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Showguide, you also have an idea. For those of you who haven't seen either, it's quite amazing to see the long list in print. As a non-breeder, I can only stand back and say "thank you, Greg" for all that you've done for the breed. Having two Poole's Ide dogs in my life, I have a special feeling for these achievements. In reading of the number of group winning dogs he's bred, I knew that my

two were included in that tally.

Summarizing some of Greg's contributions showcasing our breed, decide for yourself how remarkable his career has been. His exceptional breed type and thoughtful line breeding produced Ch. Poole's Ide Marksman McLean, winner of four national specialties, four Westminster BOB's and an AKC/Eukanuba Invitational Bred-by-Exhibitor group win. Ch. Poole's Ide Skylark is the breed's top all-breed BIS-winning bitch with 11 Bests and an AKC/Eukanuba Sporting Group win. Ch. Poole's Ide Watermark not only was a top producer but a winner of seven all-breed BIS, four Westminster BOB and three national specialties. Ch. Poole's Ide Then There's Maude was a two-time national specialty winner and the dam of an all-champion litter of six that has produced two multiple

all-breed BIS and BISS winners. I'm not done yet.

By the numbers, accomplishments cover four generations of all-breed BIS winners, eight generations of group winning bitches, ten national specialty winners and sixteen Westminster winners. On top of that, three Poole's Ide dogs

are all-around IWS.

Greg has also been nominated for the 2010 Winkie for Annual Achievement in the Outstanding Breeder category.

Subscribers and readers of Dogs in Review are eligible to vote using the official ballot included in Dogs in Review, November 2010 issue. Nominations for this award cover a variety of qualifications that include ethics, producing a high percentage of outstanding dogs even in a small breeding program and having a record of producing consistent quality over a continuing period of time. This award will be announced on

February 12, 2011, in New York City.

While Greg didn't win the overall Breeder of the Year at the AKC/Eukanuba awards ceremony, I couldn't help but feel pride in his representing not only our special IWS family, but the Sporting Group at large. Well done, Greg! As far as I'm

concerned, you ARE the Breeder of the Year.

“...„thank you, Greg‟ for all that you've done for the breed....”

The holiday season is in full swing and I wish all of you a very happy season. It is always fun to renew acquaintances and catch up on what others have been doing. It is also a stressful time and we get stretched to the limit with obligations. I am sure our furry friend‘s feel it and we need to be aware of the fact that they don‘t understand all of the hustle and bustle, so

be sure to give them some extra love when you can.

We traveled to Long Beach CA for the Eukanuba Classic and Delegate meeting. We had a great time and it was good to see so many IWS friends. It was a great honor to watch Greg Siner being awarded the Sporting Dog Breeder of the Year Award. Greg has worked hard to gain this honor, it doesn‘t come easily, and he truly deserved it. He looked great as they hung the medal on him. It was a proud moment for all IWS owners/breeders to have this honor bestowed on Greg. I asked Cathy Shelby to do a write up on Greg for this

newsletter which she graciously accepted.

The agility competition was really fun to watch. It is amazing to watch a really competitive dog run. We had four members of the IWSCA compete and they all looked great. Talk about dedication, in order to compete in Agility and be competitive you have to devote a huge amount of time and effort to get to this level. I tip my hat to all of you that compete in this great sport. The show ring was well represented by some very nice IWSs. In addition to the Classic, they have several shows preceding, which were attended by a gorgeous entry. Again, I marvel at the amount of time it takes to keep a dog in competitive coat and condition and keep them going day after day, week after week. Well done!!!! The ―Meet the Breeds‖ booth was nicely done and truly characterized the IWS. Our booth was very large and had some great banners showing the breed. Thanks to all that worked on this very important project. The Eukanuba Classic moves to Florida for the next

few years and the banners will be great for anyone putting on

the Meet the Breeds there.

It is interesting to look at the numbers of IWS‘s competing in the various venues. The whole West coast currently has a very small number of dogs competing in conformation, and yet in the past we were able to create large entries. Is this happening all over the country?? If so, why?? How many young owners/breeders do we have coming into our breed??

Are there enough to sustain both our sport and on-going breeding programs that will assure the future of the IWS? And, if not, why not?? Are we doing all we can to encourage them?? Or are we setting up so many roadblocks so as to discourage them? Are we being good role models and mentors? And are we doing all we can to keep people already

in our breed encouraged and active?

I would encourage all of you to step back and take a look at where you are and where you have been. Unfortunately, ―the times they are a-changing‖. We don‘t want to stifle forward thinking, we want to nurture it and keep on learning and developing a breeding program that brings out the best in our IWS‘s, and we need the youth and our seasoned people to

keep it going.

Although I have been active in dogs for over 50 years and have been on many boards of many clubs, this is the first time I have been so aware of what the National picture looks like. I have watched clubs almost die out when the ―old guard‖ did not embrace new members with new ideas. But change ultimately happens. In the past year I have had my eyes opened to the broader scope of the dog world. Our club is not unique in many of the issues we have faced this year and have yet to face. It would be easy to become pessimistic. But I have also been around long enough to know that we can make a difference if we can stay committed. It may mean changing some things and change can be difficult for some. The keys to success are, open communication, respect for others ideas, and a willingness to maybe try change before

condemning it.

From what I can see the performance area is increasing across the country in all breeds and the Conformation

breeding is diminishing as well as entries in shows. According to AKC, by next year the performance side will be equal to or greater than the conformation side. If so, where does the IWS fit?? Are we breeding dogs with working attitudes that are fun to work with and have the physical ability to perform in all venues?? All of these things are important for the IWS to be able to maintain it‘s standing in the dog world. We are very lucky that we are able to share semen and communicate with other countries so that we can maintain and grow our breeding programs. It kind of brings to mind the old saying ―safety in Numbers‖. That is not to say that numbers provide quality, but they do provide choice and that is what is necessary in

maintaining any program.

By the time you read this, the proposal for IWS‘s to enter the

Spaniel Hunt tests will have been presented to the AKC board of Directors. They will vote on it in February and hopefully okay it. It could possibly set us up for entering some spring tests. This will be a great venue for us to show off our versatile IWSs. All of us that have hunted upland game over them can attest to their abilities. That great nose that gets them in trouble in the

retriever tests will work wonders in the flushing tests.

Along the line of Flushing tests, we should consider adding a flushing test in the WC/WCX tests and maybe refer to it as a WCU/WCUX for upland testing. This will take some research, but I believe it could easily be done. The WC/WCX tests are set by the Parent club, not AKC. I know we already have some members that have run Flushing tests, maybe they would be willing to step up and work on this. Happy Holidays!

International Invitational for IWS with Health Conference proposal by Carolyn Randall: Carolyn recommends all countries/clubs be invited to a round table group meeting for the benefit of the IWS in regard to health and other issues that plague or might plague our breed. This could bring all owners, breeders and judges of IWS together maybe once every 5 to 10 years. The Board loved this idea

and gladly accepts Carolyn‘s help putting it into action.

Jack will make a to-do list.

Specialty Spotlight

By Dorothy Line

As the time for the next specialty draws closer and closer we here in California are busy as bees. Lots of exciting news on the horizon!

WC/WCX trials

We have an awesome site for our WC/WCX trials! This year we have decided to put the field trials in the middle of the show week schedule to highlight the fact that we have working gun dogs. This will also allow us to have some judge‘s education in the field as well!

The site is in an area about an hour‘s drive east from the host hotel called Denverton. It is located in the north part of the Suisun Marsh. This site was entirely developed for and is used for training retrievers.

Suisun Marsh

We will also have tryouts for the Bird Dog Match there. The idea of the Bird Dog Match originated at the Pacific Northwest regional show (IWSCOPS) and we thought it was such a wonderful idea we wanted to bring it to another National Specialty show as well.

To qualify for the Bird Dog Match your dog must either already have a hunting title or successfully get a pigeon and bring it back over the line to you.

We have some very special awards for the Best Puppies, Best of Breed and Best of Opposite in the Bird Dog Match! Sign ups for the Bird Dog Match will take place at the Specialty when you come.

Going once, going twice…sold!

This year at the Eukanuba dog show I had the opportunity to sit and chat with Greg Siner. We have lots of neat things already collected for our auction and he and I spoke at length about the Specialty

auctions in past years.

I was surprised to learn that the very first auction was held in the backyard of Greg‘s home in Monument, New Jersey back in the early 80‘s after the National Specialty. According to Greg, when asked by Bud Heiny what should be done with the proceeds from the auction Greg said, ―Donate it to the IWS Rescue Fund―. Much has changed in the last 25 or so years, but the one thing that has remained constant has been our ever so lively and always entertaining auctioneer. Greg has not missed an auction in all that time! So hats off to Greg for his undying commitment and generosity to the club! Greg, you are one in a million and we thank you!

Also we have been so very blessed with donations for this year‘s auction! At present we are poring thru six boxes of fabulous IWS items that have been recently donated. When we get everything out and quit oohing and aahing over them I will get some photos of a few of the items for the IWS list. As a teaser, I will tell you that we now have TWO of the Lois Pasley IWS dolls that everyone loves. These dolls are made by Lois using her own copyrighted patterns and are amazing. Lois is now disabled and will not be making anymore of these dolls so if you can get your hands on one, hang on tight!

“So hats off to Greg for his undying commitment and generosity to the

club! Greg, you are one in a million and we thank you!”

Thanks to everyone for their generosity! It‘s this kind of generous spirit that makes our Specialites so very special. We have been promised some original IWS art as well and I am eagerly looking forward to that!

Cabela‘s have also been quite generous. They sent, among other things, a nice pair of $275.00 field binoculars!

While at the Eukanuba dog show I hit up the vendors for donations and came home with a 250.00 pair of Krembs scissors!! Let me tell you, they are like BUTTA!!! Man are they nice, even if I weren‘t a scissor junkie I would buy a pair or five of these. Interesting story about Krembs shears, it seems James Krembs has sold to beauty salons for years and was quite happy doing that…then he married a dog groomer. Boy did his life change! Now he can be found most weekends at the dog shows, selling his new line of grooming shears. And they are remarkable!

Who says there‘s no free lunch (or dinner)?? Not us!!

I am very excited to announce our next raffle! We have five national chain restaurants that have all been kind enough to donate $50.00 gift cards!!! Get your tickets now and eat free for five days in a row!!! Our Restaurant Raffle is now underway and consists of $50.00 gift cards from:

Rat Tails ♦ 14 ♦ Jan- Feb 2011

The year 2010 is already at its end. It was a special year in different areas. There were highs and lows on personal and dog region. Our Eamon, Saracen Eminently Eamon.nl, trialer (Imp. USA), is almost 11 years old and already two years 'retired'. It is a shame that time flies and nothing stays the same. Although I work a lot with gun dogs by my instructing at the KNJV Training group for Gundogs, it itches with me to have my own dog to train again for the gundog work. A highlight on dog area was that a long cherished wish of mine came true. Actually halfway through the year 2010, on July 3rd 2010 Realta's Double Star, first name Myra, was born in the Realta Kennel of Rosemary Sexton in America! In 2005 already, I have met Rosemary, during my visit to the IWSCA Specialty show. In 2006 I met her again during my short stay at her kennel in Minnesota, to collect puppy Realta Star Fynder, called Tosca, with her new owner. I was very impressed with the way Rose-mary dealt conscientiously with the puppies from the start. The touch is already stimulated, balance and motor skills is en-couraged through the provision of various attributes in the puppy pen, etc. Also excellent socialization is done and a lot of preparation work for future gun dog work. Obviously I found the dam as Realta's Supernova, aka "Nova" a very nice and beautiful Irish Water Spaniel which I already watched at the WCX Tests and training with the breeder. I am used to watch gun dog work with 'European' eyes be-cause of the Dutch participation in gundog tests, trials and working tests. Also because of my participation in the Breed confined Working tests in England for several years. The con-cerned American tests vary with what is expected in England and the Netherlands. (Terrain and way of handling and inde-pendency of gundog work and the rules of the tests, differ). During the American pursuit test it is very good to see - be-sides the high performance - that Nova has achieved a lot and what she has to offer. The stud dog, Eire's Murphee Mullownee is, like Nova, a nice gundog and has been invited to participate in the highest Test for Retrievers in America, the Master National. As far as I know, the dogs have to qualify for this invitation, by gaining the

title of Master Hunter (MH). I hope that their offspring will have as much working abilities as their parents have. I am really looking forward to getting started with our Myra. The very be-ginning has been promising, so I am hopeful.

I am also pleased that both parents have passed the CHIC program. Warranty on live stock can never be given, but the fact that an animal will develop an inherited disease is thus reduced as the ancestors have been tested as normal. Now regarding the date of birth: Myra's birthday, 3rd of July 2010 is a very special date for us because my parents-in -law owned their 1st IWS bitch, which was born on July 3rd, 1963 (Florence 1963-1976 or Annagh-Imp. Ireland). "Florry" was my first introduction to the IWS. This seems a coincidence but Ch. Fynder the Rose of Murroe, named "Roisin" (Imp. UK), our other, current female was born on November 28th 2004. The same birthday date of my late dog, Int. Ch. Killimuck Maolagain Maigue, trialer, which I had in co-ownership with Miss. A. ter Kuile. Perhaps predestined? Myra is doing well at home with our 2 other Irishers. After a few days they were already accustomed to each other and Roisin is raising her well. Myra runs already rapidly along with the 2 adult dogs, while I am walking them. Even with the salty, cold Oosterschelde water in Zeeland (NL.)

she has been introduced. This is quite different from the warm fresh water lake in Zimmerman, Minnesota, where Rosemary taught her to swim with her littermates. It was late August and very hot weather, at the moment I collected Myra with my eld-est son, Thijs. So very different with the temperature in the

Netherlands. The flight of eight hours, went smoothly. Myra, 8 weeks old, was in the cab in a dedicated bag. Careful preparation of breeder Rosemary, for the special microchip and of all the needed paperwork for export to and import in Europe of the puppy, collecting Myra has become a warm memory. Thank you again, Rosemary! Once home, Myra was soon examined by our veterinarian and fully approved. Her puppy shots are already behind us. Let's grow and learn a

lot.

“The AKC will allow the suffix ...MNH for any dog that

passes the Master National Retriever test three times..”

The 2010 AKC/EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP is behind us and we can be proud of the IWS representation. Congratulations to all who were given the honor to be invited and those who were able to participate. We have the privilege of having one of our own Greg Siner winning the Sporting Dog Breeder of the Year. Greg has made a great contribution to the breed with some of the top winning dogs of all times bred by him. Thank you Greg for your beautiful presentation of our beloved IWS. On January 23, 2011 ABC will televise the show, you can check your local ABC network listings for pro-gram times. It was not possible for me to attend the meeting at Long Beach but a common thread is a concern to create ways to increase revenue. The AKC has appointed Lisa Gonzalez to a newly created position of vice president of Marketing and Communi-cations. She has an extensive background in marketing, with over twenty years experience in brand marketing and sales. Her main focus will be increasing registrations and Canine Partners enrollments, in line with the AKC mission to promote responsible dog ownership. The AKC will allow the suffix title "Master National Hunter" MNH for any dog that passes the Master National Retriever test three times, effective December 1, 2010. Dogs passing the Master National Test more that three times will have this accomplishment recorded by a numeric designation behind

the title. Example would be if the dog passes six times the title would be MNH6. The AKC and the CFA held their second Meet the Breeds in New York it is considered the world's largest showcase of dogs and cats. Over 39,000 people attended this event with participation of 200 dog and cat breeders. The breed clubs make this event possible and many thanks to those who were able to represent the IWSCA. We all are aware of dog show conformation entries going down. What is interesting is performance entries have been growing. It is predicted that in the not to distant future perform-ance entries will represent half the entries. To the IWS owner this is not surprising because we have such a versatile breed. We can be very proud of the fact so many of our "performance" dogs are breed Champions as well. Happy New Year!

Delegate’s Report

Rat Tails ♦ 16 ♦ Jan- Feb 2011

Rescue continues to put together the tools and processes we need to function more easily and allow volunteers to have consistent direction as to how to deal with Irish Water Spaniels in need of a new home. Most recently, we helped Otis find his new forever home and both the breeder and Rescue will continue to

monitor that transition.

Over the past several months, the IWSCA and its members have expressed concerns for a number of shelter dogs identified or otherwise thought to be Irish Water Spaniels. I assure you that I have similar concerns and attempt to work to identify the breed and offer assistance to shelters should we suspect that they have an Irish Water Spaniel. We also attempt to coordinate with other purebred rescue organizations, most frequently the American Water Spaniel Rescue. We are never, however, in a position to force shelters or other rescues to do as we wish. They are responsible for the animals in their charge and, while we frequently get great assistance and cooperation, sometimes we

are simply unable to be involved.

One of the trends of which I have gotten wind but been unable to delve into in great detail is that some AKC breed clubs are abandoning (at least in my mind) their rescue efforts to a separate organization. Jim Rubin and I discussed this at some length earlier this year but I have not yet been able to spend enough time to understand it fully. This is the case with the American Water Spaniel breed—the AKC breed club does not have a rescue effort any more. It is handled by a separate

organization.

For the most part, I believe, this is being done for reasons of liability and/or politics. To some extent, it appears the AKC may be supporting the move. I‘m not convinced that this is a benefit to our dogs or our breed and believe IWSCA should resist such a change. It seems to me that this can allow breeders, as members of the parent club or otherwise, to put off responsibility for dogs left homeless to a different organization and group of people. Equally, breeders could reasonably argue the Club is not doing enough to support their hard work. Our current structure promotes both cooperation and responsibility. And while you may think such shirking won't happen with our dedicated people, such an organizational change allows it to happen. I am seeing decreased responsibility and responsiveness in the new, separate organizations where they already exist. Perhaps this is because they are new organizations, but many of their leaders have participated in breed rescue for a number of years and, yet,

they are still coming up short.

I‘d like to invite Club Members (hopefully with more knowledge than I about the AKC's thinking and/or some legal and liability experience), including our Breeders, to help develop an IWSCA policy position on Rescue and breed clubs. The AKC needs to hear from us. At a minimum, they need to be informed of the

consequences to our breed and others, of supporting the separation of Rescue from Parent Clubs. Please contact me directly (email works best – [email protected]) to sign

up.

I‘d also like to give IWSCA members an example of the identification issues we face regularly. Daphne was identified as an Irish Water Spaniel on an Internet site. I contacted that group, providing a copy of our one-page IWS description and requested a photo of Daphne, as one was not available on the site. You can imagine my surprise when I realized that Daphne was the short-haired spotted variety of Irish Water Spaniel. She is now identified

on that site as an American Water Spaniel.

Ish-Ka was also identified as an Irish Water Spaniel on an Internet site. She resembled one of the brown curly dogs, even if we couldn‘t really tell from the photo which she might be. Dorothy Line contacted the shelter and was informed that the shelter director, to her credit, had gone to the expense of providing a DNA sample to identify Ish-Ka‘s breed. She came back as 75% poodle and 25% ‗other.‘ A Doodle, apparently, made her placement in California much easier for the shelter and she now

has a home.

Finally, Lisa Schaitberger has been trying to follow up on Tucker, identified as an American Water Spaniel mix at a shelter in Minnesota. She has emailed, called, and left messages but cannot get a return call. Whatever the reason, we cannot dispatch anyone (our closest contact is likely 2 hours away without the bad weather conditions that currently exist up there) without some reasonable expectation of the shelter being open and the dog being there. We have also notified American Water Spaniel Rescue, as experienced AWS folks have indicated they believe Tucker to a purebred AWS, to try to get them to intercede. Even if they do, likely they will get the same lack of response as Lisa has

to date.

So, it‘s simply not always as straightforward and easy as simply making a call or two and working to identify and handle these dogs and situations. We are all doing our best, as is each one of our members and friends, to support any Irish Water Spaniel that may find itself homeless. We will continue to do so regardless or

the barriers that may exist.

Should you find someone with an issue identifying a dog that could be any of several curly brown dogs, consider providing the following link to the American Water Spaniel Field Association‘s

―Confusing Brown Dogs‖ information page.

http://www.awsfa.org/Articles/Rescue%20-%20confusing%

Of course, any of the IWSCA Rescue Team are always willing to

help, as well.

Northeast Report

By Tara Darling

We had a wonderful public relations (PR) Event in the northeast. Meet the Breeds was held in New York. Mindy Garbarino, Lindy Williams, Carol Scott and I came to man the booth. They were very long days for the dogs but Laz, Maeve, and Sayriel made it though day one with tons of kisses and tail wags for all. Day two we were short a dog, so Chaos and Wicca tried their best to handle the crowds. At one point Chaos was asleep on the table except for his tail that keep wagging as people stroked him. I would like to thank the folks who trekked into the city with their dogs to do such a great job. Jim Rubin and Pat Welch stopped by the booth and gave some support and much needed breaks. Thank you to them

too.

Another PR event Dogs 101 aired. It featured some of our NE guys. My Chaos and Maeve got to do the outlines, while Kim and her crew of Fiona and Selchie got to go swimming. I think

we did a great job showing the breed.

Midwest Report

Winter is here, the snows and blizzards have come. The upper MidWest is again the ‗frozen tundra‘. Unfortunately showing and performance events have , at best, ground to a slow crawl. No reports were sent in. Hopefully things will pick up in the new year.

But for now, the only report I have to share are memories of pheasant hunting. Yes, pheasant hunting last week after a blizzard swept through Minnesota and deposited around 10.5‖ of snow 20 miles north of us at our favorite hunting ground. Last week Bob and I braved the cold and snow and took some of our young ones out hunting. What was interesting was how well the Irish coats, which are supposed to repel (liquid) water, repelled (frozen) water. All the snow stayed on top of the coat while the dog stayed warm underneath. And those big spreading feet? In past years we have had problems with snow balling up between the toes. But this year we liberally slathered on ―Musher‘s Secret‖ and, voila, no foot issues! On

page 9 and to the right are photos of Katie (Aquashores Saracen Falling Waters ―Katie‖) working really, really hard for her pheasants. We were hunting in short sorghum in which the snow was hip to over waist deep. The dogs would alternately launch themselves up on top of the snow or burrow under the sorghum. They used which ever technique got the pheasants out the best.

Have a good and safe holiday season and new year!

Northwest Report

By Colleen McDaniel

As this year draws to an end, there is much to reflect back on.

And there is also much to look forward to.

Here in the NW we have had many conversations about what 2011 will look like. We have become a victim of our own success. It now takes 10 class dogs to just get a three point major. And we need 7 class bitches. I don‘t believe anyone really knows how the formula works that AKC uses to determine point schedules but the perfect storm has occurred here. Probably because of the IWSCOPS yearly specialty and the support of other shows in this area we have slowly driven the required number of dogs up and up. We have been able to support these shows because we have many very active IWS owners in this area. But we now find ourselves with looking at almost impossible numbers at the same time that we have finished almost all the dogs we show in this area and there is not

a large group of up and coming puppies.

In October many of the NW people traveled to California to support the entry at Del Valle. All the points available at those four shows came back to the NW. It would be easy to say that is great for the NW IWS but that is short sighted. Currently it only takes four dogs to make a major in CA. With dogs coming in from the outside area, the entries go up and that mystical formula that AKC uses gets pushed. Add that this year‘s National will also bring in outside IWS and it could have an impact on the point schedule for CA. And it hurts an area that does not have a strong population to support their own shows if outside dogs come in.

But, alas, it is what it is.

Many in the NW have continued to dedicate themselves to the various performance events and some are trying new venues. Martha Jordan and her boy, Gromit, just competed in their first agility trial and got a double Q with a first and second place. Martha said she did enjoy it but has not been bitten by the agility

bug (yet).

We have had two special gatherings of the clan. One was an informal dinner with the guest of honor being Judith Carruthers from England. It was a relaxing evening with many of the IWS dropping by to say hello. And more recently we had the annual Christmas party. It was the first time we had it on a Sunday. That was because many of us had dog events to attend on Saturday. Once again the food was wonderful, the camaraderie heartfelt

and the gift exchange lively.

As the year ends I would like to acknowledge a very hard working team, Stacy and Keegan. Keegan started the year with a Best in Show and ended with a total of seven all-breed Bests, one Sporting Dog Best and two Specialty wins. He was able to get a Group One 23 times and 51 Group Placements including a Group Two at Westminster. He ended up being # 1 IWS both breed and group and has been #5 Sporting Dog most of the year. He did

take the month of November off and that may move him to #6 when the final numbers are posted. But I would say that the team has done very, very well in representing our breed this year. And as icing on Keegan‘s cake, he achieved Top-Producer status by having five of his get from the first litter he sired complete their championships by 16 months of age. Few people know the amount of work it takes to get this kind of record and we should

all be proud of the Stacy/Keegan team.

We have many performance teams to be proud of. No one can help but feel proud of team Nike and Christine. To actually complete the Master National is a first for an IWS. It is sad that they did not get that final passing score to mark the effort and accomplishment but that takes nothing away from the pride we all feel. And team Joey with Andy also set a first in field. Joey was the first IWS to ever run The Grand. He did not complete the test

but he left many people talking about his talent.

I believe the team that would get the ―all-around‖ performance team would have to be Lorcan and Bill. It would be easier to identify the venues they did not compete successfully in together this year. I am not sure which of the two would get the most credit. And maybe that is the key to their success. They are a

team and balance one another. Well done guys, well done.

May the New Year bring peace to all and success to those that

try.

England.”

takes months so submit your photos now. The usual cut off

date is at the end of the summer.

Photos can be submitted electronically by attaching them to an e-mail, preferably 1MG in size. Submit to

[email protected], and [email protected]. Hard copy photos can be sent to 6226 Woodlawn Ave N,

Jan-Feb 2011 ♦ 21 ♦ IWSCA

Greetings everyone and Hope you had Happy Holidays! I‘m sure everyone is resting comfortably now that the December shows are finished and the New Year has begun. 2011 National We have some very busy bees in the Southwest preparing our upcoming National Specialty so be sure and catch Dorothy Line’s Report in the newsletter. I‘m hoping for a wonderful gathering this spring! Mult BIS BISS CH Poole’s Ide Bonnie Brook CGC - Group

1 - photo permission by Carol Beauchat,

In Del Mar, Ca, on the 17th of October, our special girl, Bonnie, beautifully handled by Jen Isley, swept up a Group 1 under Judge Anthy DiNardo. The BIS ring was full of tough competition (BIS won by Molly, Mult Bis Pembroke Corgi). Bonnie and Jen put on their ―BEST for the BEST‖ and we are

very proud of them.

We are looking to see more Best in Shows out of this girl.

Bonnie is proudly owned by Sally Lewis and Lois MacDonald

of Altadena, Ca. and……breaking news…….drum roll…..

Lois Macdonald returns home from Iraq - Sally and Bonnie

anxiously awaited Lois‘s return from Iraq on December 23rd.

Lois, thank you for serving our country and giving us your best!!! We love you and your SW crew is wishing you the happiest holiday ever!

Does Bonnie have a press agent?

I think so, at least unofficially!

I want to also take a sentence to thank Florence Blecher, Bonnie‘s behind-the-scene press chairperson …..who sends me little notes when the ―Bonster‖ steps out into the show scene. Florence has been on this task since Bonnie was a baby and believe me, it doesn‘t go unnoticed. Thank you so

much! I love getting the ―word‖!

Harvest Moon Classic October 21st – October 25th –

Supported Entry and our Annual Fun Event

Formerly known as ―Del Valle‖, this year two kennel clubs, Skyline Dog Fanciers of San Mateo and Del Valle Dog Club joined together for 5 days of competition, with 4 days of All Breed and 1 day of Specialties featuring Conformation, Agility, and Obedience. The venue is large, but beautiful on the Alameda County Fairgrounds and ranks itself as one of the

largest dog shows in the country.

For the Irish Water Spaniel people it is a time for gathering, sharing information, grooming and eating, and eating and

eating! All IWS and their families come from near and far.

Thank you Dorothy, Michelle and Allana for working with me

on the event.

Thank you, Sharon Moreland, Jenn Lego, Kathy Dassel, and Kathi Fortmann, for coming and cheering us on and having

our Specialty Meeting!

Colleen worked on and prepared a great Judges Education workshop for all of us, including daily handouts and worksheets giving us something to look for each day as the group of dogs were presented. It was very thought provoking

and for those on the sidelines, it stimulated discussion and conversation into the structure and movement of the Irish

Water Spaniel.

Special Thanks !!!! I mean HUGE thanks to our travelers who made our majors and really made this show a success. From Washington, Oregon and Utah they came to put some titles on their dogs and join in the fun. Colleen McDaniel, Tammy Walker, Stacy Duncan, Patrice Dodd, Bethany Urban, Brenda Farmer, and Nancy Wiley joined in and put together our

Majors. I can‘t thank you all enough!

We had one major conflict, however, that I take responsibility for not making other arrangements, and that is that on our Supported Entry Day, conformation conflicted with obedience and neither Rainie nor Merlin were able to show. My apologies

to Hazel and Colleen!

Although this year brought us rain, which is rare, it also brought us new dogs to show:

Welcoming our new baby puppy, Debbie and Tony Bilardi‘s Tristan, Cat’s ‘N’ Cavan Tristan O’Tynan, who celebrated his 6 month birthday on the 24th, his first show date , and

How about diversity? Did you notice the kennels

represented? Pretty awesome!

Whistle Stop, Waybar, Jaybren, Mystic, Realta, Stanegate, Poole’s Ide, Cat’s

All in all, from the puppy to the big guys, our Judges saw some of the best temperaments and beautifully presented Irish Water Spaniels. Thank you to all who attended! You made this a very special event!

In Memory of...Patrick, CH Cat’s Idyll’s Reminiscence…

Kathy Dassel was presented a beautiful Russ Dodd creation in

memory of her boy, her heart, Patrick. Our thoughts go out to

you Kathy, from all of your many, many Irish Water Spaniel

friends. Thank you, Michelle Cummings for putting this

together and Russ Dodd for the photo work and beautiful

presentation of Patrick. We all miss him!

AKC/Eukanuba The View from Eukanuba….by Dorothy Line!

(Dorothy was there on Sunday)

After showing all day and working the Meet the Breeds booth, we all walked down to a restaurant by the water and ate outside on the patio. It was really nice as we watched the parade of boats decorated with Christmas lights cruise by

during dinner.

Jody Dushkes and her girl, Kerry, helped at the booth on Saturday as did Florence with with Jezzy and Sally Lewis with

River. On Sunday, Michelle and I (mostly Michelle) held down the fort again with Jezzy and River as our breed ambassadors. I spent a lot of my time going from booth to booth getting donations for our Specialty auction. I came home with an awesome pair of $250.00 Krembs scissors for the auction and a fistful of biz cards from others that will donate after I send

them a letter. (Yippee!!!)

I got to watch Liz Weaver run in agility and got to visit with Karen Blessing and learned a little something about agility.

I‘m seriously considering giving it a try with Jaxon.

We got to watch Greg Siner in the Best in Show ring along with the other nominees for Breeder of the Year. It is such an honor to even be nominated and we were so very proud of

him!

Michelle‘s girl, Bella took BOS and I heard she looked absolutely stunning. She is an amazing girl and will go far, I

am sure!

FROM: Tim Ufkes – Chair, Awards Committee

RE: New Awards Application Form

Happy New Year everyone!

It is my honor to provide you with the new and improved Awards Application. The

Awards Committee has worked hard to make this inclusive of as many of our members as

possible.

2010 was an exciting year for all of us in the breed with many new Champions and new

titles in many different venues and our expanded Awards Application will provide

acknowledgment to all of you that have worked so hard over the past year.

This letter is an explanation of the new expanded Awards Application Form that is

enclosed with this Newsletter and will also appear on both the Rattails and General IWS

lists on Yahoo.

The form has been expanded to include newly created awards in Rally, Obedience and

Agility, so take your time and review the application carefully.

The form is very straight forward and self explanatory. If you believe your dog, or bitch

has earned an award during the year, please fill out the form and include all of the

information requested. The Certificates and Awards will be filled out as submitted and

will be handed out at our National Specialty in California.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected] and I will

make certain I get back to you as soon as possible!

Thank you!
