Greek Traditional Christmas’ Sweets The ‘’Kourabies’’( sugared bun ) is a sweet feature widespread throughout Greece. It is one of the most traditional sweets especially for Christmas! The name comes from the Turkish Kurabiye, which means biscuit, pastry flour, butter and icing sugar.

Greek Traditional Christmas’ Sweets

• The ‘’Kourabies’’( sugared bun ) is a sweet feature widespread throughout Greece. It is one of the most traditional sweets especially for Christmas!The name comes from the Turkish Kurabiye, which means biscuit, pastry flour, butter and icing sugar.

Ingredients

• 600 g butter milk250 g almond220 g caster sugar 50 g rum1200 g flour1 vanilla 1 teaspoon baking powder1000 g caster sugar ( for the powdering )

Procedure• Beat the butter for 20 minutes. Afterwards , pour

the flour ,the baking powder, the vanilla ,the almonds and lastly the rum and then mix them slightly and leave the yeast for an hour.After an hour, take a little yeast and conjure small balls. These small balls are going to be baked to the oven for 15-20 minutes at 170 degrees .After baked, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool. When they cool, sprinkle them with caster sugar .

• The ‘’melomakarono’’("small

honey cake".) is made essentially of flour, oil and honey. It ranks as the buns honored in national pastries that are considered essential in every Greek house especially at Christmas time.

Ingredients• 3 cups oil

1 cup sugar a half cup orange juicea half cup cognac 1 teanspoon baking sodacinnamoncarnationwalnut For the syrup 3 cups water 3 cups sugar3 cups honey

Procedure• Beat the oil and the sugar together for 5 minutes.

Mix the orange juice with the baking soda. Then , throw it to the mixture ( oil&sugar).After that ,throw the cognac , the cinnamon , the carnation and lastly the flour and mix them slightly .Let the yeast for 30 minutes.After these 30 minutes, take some of the yeast to your hand and conjure it to balls!In the end , make holes with a fork in each melomakarono and afterwards, bake them at 180 degrees for 25 minutes.Boil the syrup for 10 minutes. When It cools , dip the hot melomakarona into this and then sprinkle them with grated walnut!
