Achievements Greek Literature

Among the earliest Greek writings are two epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer.

These poems taught Greek ideas and values. They influenced later writings.

Achievements Greek Literature

Greeks (Aesop) told short stories that taught the reader lessons about life or gave advice on how to live. These stories were called fables.

Examples: “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.”

Achievements Tragedy

• A play or story that has a tragic ending for its hero.

• This demonstrates that people have a destiny, and they have little control over it.

Achievements Comedy

• A play or story that has a happy ending to it.

• Comedies were usually used to make fun of others, they were often times politically motivated.

• Humanism: emphasis on human life and achievements.

• Realism: artists worked according to Golden Rule: proportionally correct, pleasing, harmonious, nothing in excess.

Achievements Greek Architecture

• The Greeks used the column, or an upright pillar, in many of their buildings.

• These columns were often times decorative and came in 3 different styles; Ionian, Doric, and Corinthian.
