Lessons From Ten Years of I-TVLessons From Ten Years of I-TV
In 1989-90, the University of Missouri established videoconferencing facilities and links between UMSL, UMKC, and UMC.
In 1993, a pilot project formed three K-12 networks in the state. Funding was provided by local telephone companies.

Results of Pilot Project• Two-way Interactive Television proved
itself to be a distance learning technology that can accommodate many of the same modes interaction between teachers and students used in the traditional classroom.
• It can help schools maintain the benefits of small size while expanding opportunities for their students.

Types of Growth• New Clusters• Additions to existing network/clusters, a case in
point is the MIT-E Network:• MIT-E Central added in 1999 (5 schools)• MIT-E South added in 2000 (4 schools)• Addition of three more schools to South and Central
in 2001
• Schools that are independent of clusters. These typically connect via H.323 over existing MOREnet connection.

Videoconferencing Standards• H. 323 is, in many ways, still developing. The
basis for voice over IP telephony, it’s reach is rapidly expanding and it is widely supported by WANs.
• H.320 is the tried and true standard for videoconferencing, having been perfected over the years. While it is on the way out, it is reliable and predictable. Don’t expect to see many new features added to this standard.

Upgrading older systems
Converting from older technology to one of today’s dominant standards
• Networks and classrooms based on Grassvalley DS3 equipment
• Networks and classrooms based on NEC EX7 equipment
Key issue in upgrade process is ensuring quality of service and maximum connectivity in a cost effective manner.
I-TV Technology IssuesI-TV Technology Issues
• Firewall Issues• Quality of Service• Distributed model of making and
breaking connections• Distributed model of support/training
• Need for standard equipment• Need for timely support (overnight
equipment replacement)

Guidelines for I-TV Acquisition • Non-Proprietary Technology and Software.• Standards Based.• Easy access to support. Basic training for
local technical staff.• Keep it simple.Majority of users will use a
minimal number of features.• Network must be reliable.
