The Great River: Three Centuries of Connecticut Valley Art & HistoryThis program is a survey of the people, places and things that figured prominently in the cultural and artistic life of the Connecticut Valley during its first two centuries. Aspects of regional history are explored through the study gravestones, architecture, household furnishings, and regional industry. These objects illustrate the bond that linked the neighboring towns of the Connecticut Valley while offering insights into the people who owned them. The Valley's transformation from an essentially provincial and agrarian culture to the vanguard of the 19th century's high-tech industrial revolution will be discussed. The lecture revisits the themes and materials presented in The Great River (Wadsworth Atheneum), while providing further insights into the industrial transformation that occurred after 1840.To book a feature length presentation - contact William Hosley at wnhosley@snet.net
