Carry On, Jeeves by P G Wodehouse� is is the � rst of the series of wonderful stories about the relationship between Bertie Wooster and his man, Jeeves. Jeeves’ � rst job is to help cure Bertie’s hangover, and so their special bond is created. � ere are many more books in the series and all of them are equally beautiful in their locations and quirky, eccentric characters. None of the stories have shocking endings or explicit language but during a hot summer it’s rather nice sometimes to read something funny and light and with the guarantee of a happy ending. It is the tender friendship between servant and master that makes the books so unique, that Jeeves is always able to forsee the trouble that Bertie is likely to get into and have a plan in place to sort it out becomes the pattern for their relationship. It is touching that Jeeves is so clearly the real master, and works so tirelessly to keep Bertie in good standing with his complicated family and out of wedlock with a series of unsuitable women. � e books are mainly short stories, and the writing does become a bit formulaic if you read them in quick succession, but they make a nice break in-between more taxing literature. Set in the 1920’s the books have become a great timepiece for the era and the great adaptation for TV by Fry and Laurie is always worth a watch.

Children’s ChoiceThe Hueys in The New Jumper by Oliver Jeffers� is is the � rst book about the Hueys, and if you like the unusual style of Je� ers then you will not be disappointed. � e illustrations are particularly simple and plain giving lots of opportunity for discussion. � e thrust of the story is about how much people like to be the same generally, and not stand out or get picked on for being di� erent, it goes on to explore the notion that we sometimes have an idea that does separate us from the crowd, and how we can manage that. It’s a great way to introduce ideas about ‘di� erence’ with small children, but because the pictures are not childish, the book has also proved very useful to promote discussions with older children on the same themes.We have just borrowed the next book � e Hueys – None the Number from the library to go on an adventure to � nd the number zero. � ere is also � e Hueys – It Wasn’t Me if you get really hooked. www.letyourselfgrow.org
