� ere's still time to plant da� odil bulbs and other spring � owering bulbs for a magni� cent start to next years display.• Plant tulip bulbs now to prevent Tulip Fire infection.• Plant up a terracotta pot of hyacinth bulbs for a simple but stunning display next spring.• Plant out spring bedding displays of pansies, violas and primulas.• Start to plant bare-root roses - they can be planted any time between now and March.• Plant heathers, grasses and trailing ivy in pots for winter colour.• Now is the ideal time to plant a magnolia tree for a beautiful spring display.• Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suff ered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year.• Continue to lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing.• Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour.• Before the birds eat them all, cut a few stems of holly with berries for making Christmas garlands. Stand them in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot where our feathered friends can't take them. •Divide mature clumps of rhubarb once they are dormant.• Now is a great time to prepare a perennial vegetable bed which can be planted up with rhubarb crowns and asparagus crowns.• Prepare a bed for planting autumn garlic. Improve heavy soils with organic matter before planting.• Now is an ideal time to invest in mushroom kits. It’s surprisingly easy to grow your own mushrooms.• Place a scaff old plank on the ground along the main access route into the plot to allow access without compacting the soil as you walk across it.• If you have access to fresh manure, now is the time to spread it across the sur-face of your vegetable beds to rot down over winter.• Build a raised bed to take the bending out of vegetable growing.• Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of the stem to prevent wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots.

CompostingDon’t throw away your spent bedding plants, kitchen waste and other plant material – turn them into valuable compost for improving your soil and mulching your beds. Fallen tree leaves can be turned into leafmould – the perfect soil improver and mulch – especially for rhododendrons, azaleas and other woodland plants. Making good compost and leafmould is easy with compost bins, compost and leafmould accelerators, leaf rakes and collectors.

Tender plantsTender plants won’t appreciate being kept out in the cold,so move them somewhere protected from frost and cold winds. Consider using cold frames and heaters to give protection and beat off the worst of the winter weather. Plants that are hardier but still sensitive to winter cold will appreciate a thick mulch of bark and even covering with fl eece and bubble wrap in the coldest weather.

To mark Anti-Slavery day on Saturday 18th October, Soroptimist International Nottingham held an awareness raising event in Arnold (Notts). Members of the public were given copies of an awareness raising quiz and a leafl et ‘How to spot the signs of modern slavery’. Th ey were asked to show their support by signing the Freedom Wall. Th e event was attended by Vernon Coaker MP, the MP for Gedling and by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Jenny Hollingsworth and her consort. Vernon Coaker has been a strong supporter of the Freedom Wall events since 2010 and Councillor Hollingsworth showed a keen interest in the event and in the aims of Soroptimism.

Moon Over Soho by Ben AaronovitchTh is is the second in the ‘Rivers of London’ series, and if you’re looking for something a bit diff erent then it’s for you. Th e book is essentially a detective story, but with the added twist of being based on the premise that magic is real. Peter Grant, the young policeman at the centre of the stories discovers that he can talk to ghosts, and is then taken under the wing of the enigmatic Nightingale, the last wizard in London who runs a very specialist and secret unit in the Met Police. Th e characters are beautifully described and very easy to imagine, the relationships with other ‘specialist’ individuals are completely beliveable and aft er reading the fi rst book, suspending your disbelief happens automatically. � e magical element naturally allows for more varied storylines, but the heart of the detective novel is still very well craft ed and a really exciting story is still present. Th e characters are intriguing and the desire to read on to the next book is very strong as you want to learn more about them – there are currently fi ve books in the series, so roll on those dark winter nights…

LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART

IngredientsFor the shortcrust pastry300g/10½oz plain fl our, plus extra for fl ouringpinch salt30g/1¼oz cold lard, cut into cubes (optional - you can use all butter if you prefer)85g/3oz cold butter, cut into cubes2-3 tbsp cold water1 free-range egg, beaten with a pinch of saltFor the white sauce30g/1¼oz butter30g/1¼oz fl our600ml/1 pint milk3 tbsp double cream2 tsp Dijon mustard1/3 chicken stock cube, crumbledFor the � lling2 large leeks30g/1½oz butter3 Cox apples, cored and cut into large pieces70g/2½ oz bacon lardons, or streaky bacon, diced10 boneless chicken thighs, diced1 bunch tarragon, leaves only (optional)freshly ground black pepper

Preparation methodFor the pastry, sift the fl our and salt into a large mixing bowl.Add the lard and butter and, using your fi ngertips, rub the fat into the fl our until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Lift the fl our into the air as you do so, to get some air into the mixture and keep it cool.Add just enough cold water to form a dough and mix together with a palette knife.Th en, using your hands, bring the dough together in the bowl. Turn it out onto a clean, fl oured work surface and knead briefl y. Shape it into a � attened circle and wrap it in cling fi lm. Chill in the fridge for at least 20 minutes.While the pastry is chilling, make the white sauce. Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the fl our and stir with a wooden spoon over a medium heat for a minute or two, being careful not to burn it.Add the milk all at once. Take off the heat and whisk the mixture with a balloon whisk. Once all the lumps are whisked in, place the pan back onto a medium heat and whisk continuously until the sauce comes to the boil and thickens.

Cook for another fi ve minutes, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon. Add the double cream, mustard and the crumbled stock cube. Stir well, then allow to cool.For the fi lling, top and tail the leeks. Slice them into thick rings and wash thoroughly in a bowl of clean water, to remove any grit. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan and place the leeks into the hot pan. Add the butter.Add the apples to the pan with the leeks and cook for a few minutes. Add the bacon lardons and the chicken pieces to the pan and cook for a few minutes longer (the chicken will be only about two-thirds cooked at this stage).Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place the chicken mixture into a pie dish. Sprinkle the tarragon leaves, if using, over the top. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Pour over the cooled white sauce.For the pastry top, allow the pastry to get up to room temperature. Lightly fl our a clean board and roll out the pastry into a rectangle

about one-and-a-half times the size of the pie dish.With a knife, trim long, half-inch wide strips from the pastry. Use the trimmings to make an edge around the pie dish by brushing them with a bit of water (to help the pastry adhere) and placing them in a single layer around the outer edge of the pie dish.Using your rolling pin, lift the remaining pastry sheet and place it on top of the dish to form a lid. Trim around the edge of the pie dish with a knife to cut off the excess pastry, reserving the trimmings. Use your fi ngers and thumb to crimp the edges. Make a hole in the centre to allow the air to escape.Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg and salt wash. Use the reserved pastry trimmings to decorate the top.Place the pie on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until bubbling hot and golden. Serve while hot.LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART
