I am just back from Burgundy where I tasted hundreds of wines from the 2009 vintage. I can say without hesitationthat this is a great vintage for Red Burgundy.

The domaines are very happy with their efforts as the wines typically combine ripe fruit with superb aromatics andsilky texture. The sweetness of fruit and balance will make these wines very pleasurable in their youth with theability for mid term or longer ageing.

2009 is a more charming vintage than the highly touted 2005 and many winemakers have expressed their preferencefor 2009. I would certainly agree with this judgement.

If you are a serious Burgundy drinker you will not want to miss this vintage.

International interest in the 2009's has been high and already many domaines have sold or allocated their winesbefore they have been bottled. Demand for Grand Crus, which make up a tiny portion of production, has beenenormous.

We are pleased to present our first pre-arrival offer for 2009 Red Burgundy - the wines of Domaine Georges Lignier.

DOMAINE GEORGES LIGNIERThis Ligniers have been vignerons since the mid 19th century. Today the domaine isowned by Georges Lignier who is assisted by his nephew Benoit Stehly. As has been thesituation with many old Burgundy domaines the inclusion of the expertise of the younggeneration has had a dramatic effect on the quality of wine.

Much of the domaines vines were planted in the1920's. The maturity of the vines combined with apolicy "viticulture raisonnee" (winegrowing withminimal chemical intervention) results in deeplycoloured and flavoured wines from their prestigiousappellations.

The wines are scheduled to be bottled in June 2011 and will be shipped byrefrigerated container as soon as practical.

These are terrific wines from a great vintage at remarkably affordable prices. So please get your order in quickly toavoid dissappointment.

2009 Morey-St-DenisUsual Price $69.95Pre-Arrival $59.95

From two parcels "Les Crais" and "Clos Solon" both located on thelower reaches of the hillside. What struck me at first was the lovelyopen nose which had excellent complexity. The wine is nicely balancedwith plenty of the great 2009 character which will make it top drinkingyoung but with the ability to complex over the next 5 years. This is avery smart village wine. And how about the price!

2009 Gevrey-ChambertinUsual Price $87.00Pre-Arrival $75.00

Some consider Gevrey to be a standout commune in 2009. Producedfrom 1.5 hectares at the south end of Gevrey. Soils are mainly gravel. Afirmer wine than the Morey above with blackcurrant and small red andblack fruits over lush tannins. Will drink very well as a young wine.

2009 Morey-St Denis 1er Cru Clos des OrmesUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $87.00

The Clos des Ormes lies at the foot of Clos de la Roche and wasinitially founded by the Citeaux monks. The vineyard was largelyreplanted following heavy soil erosion during 1963. The nose offer morerichness with dark fruit and spice. The palate displays dark cherry andblackberry notes and is quite mineral with a long, firm finish. Coatesdescribes Clos des Ormes as one of Morey's best premier crus andconsiders it "a lesser - but by no means ignoble - Clos de la Roche".Outstanding value for the quality.

2009 Clos-St-Denis Grand CruUsual Price $189.00Pre-Arrival $162.00

Clos-St-Denis is typically the most feminine of the Morey Grand Crus.It is perhaps more Chambolle-like in aroma and weight. Lignier's winesees 50% new oak to retain the freshness and purity. The first thing thatcaptivates is the nose. It is deep red and very spicy. On the palate thereis serious minerality with a very long and fine finish. This wine, whilstdense and sappy, is more about finesse and subtlety than power. In 2009these characters are beguiling. A lovely wine. And did I mention theprice?

Page 4: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

2009 Clos de la Roche Grand CruUsual Price $229.00Pre-Arrival $199.00

As usual this is darker and deeper than the Clos-St-Denis. Blue fruitswith some earth (truffles and liquorice?) and violet nuances. Seriousdensity with grip and a powerful finish. Yet still vibrant and fresh. If theClos-St -Denis is feminine this is certainly a masculine wine. A classicClos de la Roche in the making. Very impressive.

2009 Charmes-Chambertin Grand CruUsual Price $229.00Pre-Arrival $199.00

Located just north of the border Charmes is the typically the easiest ofthe Grand Crus. Georges Lignier's production is very small with anaverage of just 440 bottles a year! The nose suggests violets, vanilla andperhaps a little roasted coffee. The tannins are more subtle than the Closde la Roche and the impression is of a more silky wine which will softenmore and gather complexity with time. The most charming of the GrandCrus, although the name actually comes from the French "chaume" - a piece of land that was once abandoned andhas been replanted.

2009 Bonnes-Mares Grand CruUsual Price $279.00Pre-Arrival $249.00

From the barrel this was more closed than the prior wines. The fruit ismore dark red than black, typical of Chambolle, with mineral and earth.Very powerful in the mouth with long, sinewy tannins that grip thepalate. More muscular than the previous wines and crying out for timein the bottle to reveal its real quality. Only five 228 litre barrels made. Ihave enjoyed bottles from the 1980's and 1990's which are only justhitting their straps. Patience required!

Domaine Georges Lignier

25% Off BackVintages Directfrom the Domaine!

Domaine Georges Lignier - aSelection of Perfectly Aged Burgundy! One of the great mysteries of Burgundy is why wines that have been kept in the Domaine's Cellar always taste so good. Is it theconsistant cold cellars or is there some other explanation? Certainly the wines always look much fresher and I am constantlysurprised how vintages we would dismiss in Australia can be excellent.

With a little sweet talking I have secured a tremendous parcel of back vintage wines from Domaine Georges Lignier. The firsttime these wines will see the light of day will be when we ship them!

That's the good news. Here is the great news....

Many domaines want to charge vast premiums for older wines. I can tell you that Georges Lignier has made these back vintagewines available at prices too good to resist. We'd like to think it is because the domaine is happy with our work in Australia - alittle bonus for a job well done!

The wines come from some of the best vintages of the 2000's. There are wines (including Grand Crus) from 2002-2006. Thewines can be cellared or enjoyed now.

Save 25% on our Normal Price! If the impeccable cellaring and great vintages did not tempt you hopefully our offer of a 25% Discount will. We offer all of theback issue wines at a 25% Discount until 15 June 2011 or sold out.

Stock levels vary so first-in, best dressed. You can order whatever you want, all we require is a minimum order of 6 bottles, which can be a single bottle of 6 different wines (or any mix you like). As a further temptation we off an additional 5% discountfor full cases of a single wine. Payment is required with order.

This is a rare opportunity that we suggest you take advantage of. For the restauranteurs on our email list here is a chance toobtain back vintage wine with an impeccable provenence.

A visit to Domaine Philippe Leclerc is an interesting experience in many ways. Clive Coates says “ Philippe, withhis neat beard and elegant clothes, gives one the impression that he has just got off the set of some swashbucklingmovie.” Another acquaintance calls him “Mr Easyrider”. It all makes for a very individual association.

The Domaine is located within the town of Gevrey-Chambertin.Going down the stairs from what appears a smallish building aboveground you enter an aladdin's cave of cellars and rooms, manybeautifully finished. Here Philippe crafts his serious Gevrey-Chambertin. These are wines that are made to last, in the old way,but with all the benefits of modern know-how. Philippe picks late, macerates slowly at high temperature with some stems, and then

places the wine into a high percentage ofnew oak. The result is deep, firm, classicwines with strong tannic backbones.Wines made to age.

Producer’s note from Burghound:Philippe Leclerc, who is definitely notgiven to hyperbolic excess, told me flatly that "2009 is among the 3 best vintages that Ihave ever made in the 40 years that I have been doing this. Along with 1978 and 1985,2009 produced truly wonderful wines that have everything that they need to achievegreatness. Moreover, it's the first vintage that I have ever made where I didn't chaptalizeeven one wine, not even the Bourgogne. For the vinification, I used between 25 and 33%whole clusters, which you could do in a vintage that is as phenolically ripe as 2009 is. Themalos were long but not as long as 2007 or 2008. Overall, I am very excited about thevintage."

The 2009’s I tasted all impressed me with their fruit and freshness. The wines are tannic, but not overly so, and the combination with the stunning fruit of 2009 makes theseseriously good. A little patience will be generously rewarded. Burghound notes a littlereduction which will disappear as the wines are finished. I only saw this on one barrel ofCombe aux Moines - the second barrel was much fresher and transparent.

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin “La Platiere”Usual Price $89.95Pre-Arrival Price $79.95Lovely nervosity on the nose. The fruit is very bright and there is serious body and mouthfeel for a village wine.Deep flavours are followed by a finish with enough tannin to attain serious length. Impressive.

Burghound: Reduction. Here the mouth feel is quite suave and opulent with ripe structural elements that are densebut relatively fine on the lingering, mouth coating and well-balanced finish. 88-91 Drink: 2016+

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru CazetiersUsual Price $165.00Pre-Arrival Price $149.00

More serious and powerful. Red-black berries with noticeable, but fine, oak notes. On the palate the wine has theminerality of Cazetiers and is very mouthfilling and powerful. This is a masculine wine without doubt, but it also hasgreat balance and life. I like the style of this cuvee very much.

Burghound: Visible but reasonably well-integrated wood sets off cool and airy red berry fruit aromas that carry bothearth and sauvage undertones, both of which can also be found on the rich, full and precise yet overtly muscular andpowerful flavors that culminate in a naturally sweet and driving finish. This should be excellent if allowed to have 10to 12 years of cellar time first. A SWEET SPOT WINE 90-93 Drink: 2021+

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux MoinesUsual Price $185.00Pre-Arrival Price $165.00

Tasted from two barrels. Number one showed a little reduction and needs a racking. Barrel two - a completelydifferent beast. Bright red-black berry fruit that is darker is taste than the Cazetiers. A bigger frame again withmasses of extract and a seriously long, tannin driven finish. Not for the first time I have written “bright” which is arecurring character in the 2009 reds. A very smart wine that I think would easily be confused as a Grand Cru in ablind tasting.

Burghound: Reduction. There is by contrast a real sense of underlying vitality to the exceptionally fresh and vibrantmiddle weight flavors that also brim with both copious amounts of dry extract and ample minerality on the seriousyet not particularly rustic, powerful and firmly tannic finish. This is often the best wine chez Leclerc and so it isagain in 2009. A SWEET SPOT WINE 91-93 Drink: 2021+

“One of the Great Domaines of Burgundy” Clive Coates. The Domaine Michele and Patrice Rion was born in 2000 when Patrice decided to leave the family estate DomaineDaniel Rion. He took with him parcels of Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes and Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Closdes Argillieres and built a cuveries and cellar on his own property. Since then the domaine has expanded withincluding the addition of the monopole Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos St Marc which had previously been bottled byBouchard.

Patrice farms organically and is trialling biodynamic viticulture. Patrice is convinced that great wine is created in thevineyard. Grapes are sorted on two tables de tri and are 100% destemmed. Temperatures are kept cool through thewinemaking process to retain the aromatics. The Premier Crus typically see 50% new oak.

I tasted the 2009 reds in February 2011 and was impressed by the purity and aroma. The Chambolles are everythingthe commune should be - delicate and perfumed with lovely flavours and fine finish. The Nuits are at the moreelegant end but do not lack for power and terroir.

2009 Chambolle MusignyUsual Price $105.00Pre-Arrival Price $90.00

Lovely elegant lifted nose of red fruits with a little vanilla-creme. A delightful villages wine that will provide great earlypleasure.

Burghound: This is also wonderfully elegant, pure, airy andcool with red currant and wet stone aromas introducing lightto barely medium weight flavors that possess really lovelydelicacy that continues on the lacy, balanced and persistentfinish. This is light and quite forward but the purity ofexpression is dazzling. 87-89 Drink: 2012+

2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les CrasUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival Price $99.00

Rion owns 0.50 ha of the lieu-dit slightly south-west ofBonnes-Mares. More weight and depth than the regular cuveebut still with an outstanding Chambolle character of red fruitsand violets on the nose. Tighter and more structured on thefinish.

Burghound: An exuberant and fresh nose of slightly riper redberries with hints of sour cherries merges into more obviouslymineral-inflected barely middle weight flavors that possess the same extraordinary purity and detail on the firmerand drier finish. 87-90 Drink: 2014+

2009 Chambolle-Musigny 1er CruLes FueesUsual Price $165.00Pre-Arrival Price $145.00

One of my favourite Chambolle Premier Crus. It alwaysseems fresh and lively with medium body but serious depth.Located immediately south of Bonnes-Mares. A little moreclosed and serious with the creamy red fruit typical of thecommune. Beautifully poised.

Burghound: Here the composition of the nose is similar but there is more restraint as well as a bit more freshnessthat carries over to the energetic and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that are rich yet tight with a moreovert minerality on the complex, refined and driving finish. This is calm and poised with a palpable sense of innerharmony. A SWEET SPOT WINE 90-92 Drink: 2016+

2009 Chambolle-Musigny 1er CruLes CharmesUsual Price $165.00Pre-Arrival Price $145.00

From a 0.46 ha holding planted in 1951. A little riper with araspberry and cream chararcter from the old vines.Mouthfilling and quite juicy. Silky tannin finish, typical ofthese 2009 Chambolles.

Burghound: A completely different nose is slightly riper andnot quite as fresh though certainly very pretty with a mix of red berry, plum, anise and black tea that is followed bygenerous, round, rich and succulent flavors that are utterly delicious while culminating in a persistent and mouthcoating finish. This should reward 5 to 7 years of cellar time. 89-92 Drink: 2015+

2009 Vougeot 1er Cru Les CrasUsual Price $129.00Pre-Arrival Price $115.00

Les Cras is located across the road north of Clos Vougeot. I did not taste this wine during my visit but Burghoundlikes its awarding his SWEET SPOT designation to both the 2008 and 2009.

Page 11: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

Burghound: mix of upper and lower register earth-inflected red and blue pinot fruit aromas complements the equallyearthy, round and quite generous medium-bodied flavors that possess good mid-palate density and fine complexityon the long and relatively fine finish. A Vougeot of relative finesse. A SWEET SPOT WINE 89-92 Drink: 2015+

2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Closdes ArgillieresUsual Price $145.00Pre-Arrival Price $129.00

A 1.8 ha site planted in 1939 and 1955 located on the slope inPremeaux just above the winery. This 1er Cru is characterizedby finesse, elegance and powerful tannins, and is easilyrecognizable by its fruity nose of black cherries andblackberries. Round, supple and with a long finish, the ripetannins and depth of fruit produce a wine capable of drinkingyoung, yet which will improve with cellaring.

More blackberry and dark cherry than raspberry. Again an elegant style (somewhat Vosne-Romanee like),particularly for NSG. Finishes with chewy but fine tannins.

Burghound: A similar but more complex nose that displays more in the way of floral nuances that precede suavemiddle weight flavors that also possess relatively sophisticated tannins even though they're more prominent on themouth coating finish. 89-91 Drink: 2016+

2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru ClosSt Marc MonopoleUsual Price $165.00Pre-Arrival Price $145.00

A 0.93 ha monopole purchased by the Rions in 2003. This wasformerly farmed by Bouchard Pere et Fils and Patrice hasspent much time on the vineyard which had been subject toexcessive use of weed killers and anti-rot spray. Clos St Marcis almost entirely surrounded by the Clos de Argillieres but isquite different in style. A bigger richer wine with seriousconcentration finishing with a firm, yet fine and powerful finish. Patrice is proud of how this appellation hasimproved each year.

Burghound: A ripe plum and black cherry nose trimmed in warm earth notes leads to very rich, full and naturallysweet flavors that possess excellent concentration and plenty of mouth coating sap on the velvety finish. There isgood power and discreet minerality and this should reward 6 to 8 years or so of cellar time. 89-91 Drink: 2016+

“One of the Great Domaines of Burgundy” Clive Coates. The Domaine Comte Senard is run by Lorraine Senard and her father Philippe. The Domaine is famous for extensivevineyard holding in the Cote de Beaune with the highlight being a broad, and interesting, selection of Corton GrandCru Red. The holdings include Clos du Roi and Bressandes plus a most unusual and rare Red Corton produced fromwith in the Charlemagne area and the monopole Clos des Meix.

The 2009 red vintage in the Cote de Beaune has been described as“potentially great” by Tanzer with Aloxe Corton being singled out asone of the highest performing communes. Upon tasting these wines itis easy to see why. Corton rouge has a reputation for being firm anddry and requiring many years in the cellar to resolve the tannins. In2009 the wines still have their firm tannin backbone but on top of thatthey also havedelicious, fresh fruitof the vintage. It is anattractivecombination that

provides a surprising about of immediate pleasure with thetraditional ability to age long and gracefully.

I tasted through the full range of 2009 wines which had beenrecently bottled. I was seriously impressed by the Clos du Roi and

Bressandes whichGrand Millesime willfeature. We also offerthe three other Corton Grand Cru which provide some interestinginsights into the terroir of the different vineyards.

Located mid slope at the northern end of the commune, Bressandes is a favourite of Corton drinkers as it combinesthe power with elegance and aromatics. Senard’s holding is 0.63 ha planted in 1943, 1965 and 2002.

A big step up here. Ripe red berries mingle with mineral and spice. Very aromatic. In the mouth the wine istexturally superior with subtle oak notes and very fine tannins. Powerful yet fine. A long and racy finish. Anexcellent Corton and highly recommended.

Last July 2009 we introduced the wines of Morey-Coffinet to Australia

In December, the French Magazine Bourgogne d'Aujourd'hui namedwinemaker Thibaut Morey "The Discovery of the Year"!

We are delighted to see that winemaker Thibaut Morey has just beennamed the Discovery of the Year by Burgundy Wine Magazine Bourgogned'Aujourd'hui (Burgundy Today). A PDF of the translated article can befound on our website. This is quite a coup for this small Domaine.

I tasted the 2008 and 2009 vintages whilst in Burgundy in February andam very pleased to report that the wines continue the domaine’s highquality run of vintages.

Burghound has reviewed the 2008 very favourably. Wine Spectator hasfollowed suit with some very high numbers. The 2009 vintage, which hadonly just been bottled, has not yet been reviewed.

Our allocation of 2009 wines has been expanded. We present a specialpre-release offer for the 2009 and 2008 Morey-Coffinet Whites but urgeyou to act quickly as this is only a small Domaine. Rarely can you findsuch a good price/quality raport. Delivery mid 2011. All wines will be shipped refrigerated.

DOMAINE MOREY-COFFINETDomaine Morey-Coffinet was created in 1978 from two established estates - those of Michel’s father Marc Moreyand his wife’s father Fernand Coffinet. There has been a significant program of investment to improve the cellar and

equipment. The winery and cellars are located under a splendid 19th centurymansion at the top of Chassagne. The magnificent 16th century vaulted cellarsare amongst the most impressive in the village.

The process from vineyard to bottle is quitetraditional with minimal use of chemicals. After racking the whites are given a lightbentonite fining and are bottled unfiltered. The aim is to preserve the fresh aromas.

Morey-Coffinets white are not big wines. They are wine of subtlety and nuancewith the fruit framed, rather than dominated, by oak. There is pleasure to be hadin their youth but like all good white burgundy as little age adds more complexity.

The 2008 Vintage: Whilst I am a fan of the minerally, lean 2007 white burgundies it is fair to say that noteveryone agrees. Certainly those looking for shorter term pleasure often find them a little to restrained, or just simplytoo austere and acid. Tanzer describes 2008 as “Minerally too, with greater density and richness than 2007,occasionally with a glyceral or even exotic quality due to some botrytis; a thicker and more accessible version of“classic” than 2007”. Burghound says “2008 – Another Classic Vintage that is Essentially a 2007 Redux but withBetter Concentration.....2008 is more concentrated, slightly riper and will be more agreeable young.....2007 isperhaps more for the hardcore traditionalist whereas 2008 will please most enthusiasts”. So the choice is yours.

The 2009 Vintage: No doubt the 2009 whites will forever live in the shadow of the outstanding 2009 reds. Before visiting I had anticipated ripe, exotic whites but (in most cases) that was not what I tasted. In fact the purityand definition of the better wines was delightfully surprising. The wines have lower acid than in 2008 but have nolack of freshness. Dominique Lafon considers the vintage outstanding for whites. The one consensus, if there is eversuch a thing in Burgundy, is that those who picked early were able to make wines from very healthy grapes withplenty of backbone and no sur maturite .

2008 Vintage2008 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les CailleretsUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $84.00Quite closed on the nose. The citrus and stones are framed by oak. Thepalate shows some ripe fruit carried by the minerality of this vineyard.Needs a little more time in the bottle for everything to come together.Hopefully it will be as good as the super 2007.

Burghound: A citrus zest and anise suffused nose set off by discreetoak complements the intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavorsthat possess fine detail and plenty of energy, all wrapped in a notablydry and lingering finish. This is not as complex at present as I believe that it will become in time due to the ampleunderlying material. A Sweet Spot wine. Drink: 2014+ Score: 91

Wine Spectator: This offers loads of toast and spice, yet it's intense, balancing those flavors with creamy peach, apple tart, butterscotch and mineral notes. Perhaps a bit obvious, but will have its fans. Fine length. Best from 2012through 2024. 280 cases made. Score: 92

2008 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La RomaneeUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $84.00In 2008 the La Romanee struck me as the best of the Premier Crus. The wine is usually a little fuller than Caillerets and in 2008 this fruitis carried by some lively acidity. Very smart indeed.

Burghound: From a 0.7 ha parcel of 50+ year old vines. This has longbeen one of my favorite wines chez Morey-Coffinet as it agesmagnificently well and 2008 should add to that impression. Moderatewood frames elegant and mildly exotic white flower and yellow orchard fruit aromas that merge into rich, generousand concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess good levels of dry extract and a subtle minerality on theimpressively persistent finish. This is on the dry side though not absolutely bone dry and the balance is impeccable.Worth considering. A Sweet Spot wine. Drink: 2015+ Score: 92

Wine Spectator: Linear, tense and packed with peach, floral and hazelnut aromas and flavors, this is stylish anddetailed, showing great balance and a long, lingering aftertaste of toast and mineral. Best from 2012 through 2022.323 cases made. Score: 92

2008 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchots DessusUsual Price $110.00Pre-Arrival $92.00From a minute holding of 0.06 ha planted in 1980. Just the one barrelproduced! Blanchots Dessus is located in the pocket between LeMontrachet and Criots-Batard-Montrachet on the north side of the RN6.The wine is richer and more powerful than Les Caillerets or LaRomanee no doubt due to its prime location.

2008 Batard Montrachet Grand CruUsual Price $250.00Pre-Arrival $225.00Burghound: From a 0.13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 on theChassagne side. An expressive and highly nuanced nose that is trimmedin almost invisible wood features notes of citrus, soft floral notes andorchard fruit aromas that run right up to the edge of a mild exoticismbefore sliding gracefully into rich, powerful and textured middle weightflavors that possess a racy and firm acid spine as well as an explosivefinish. I like the balance here and this should be lovely in time but notthat time will be required as it's very tight. Drink: 2016+ Score: 93

Wine Spectator: Creamy, elegant and weightless, exhibiting intense aromas and flavors of roasted hazelnut, peach, apple tart, vanilla and toasted brioche. Focused and harmonious, this just keeps coming at you on the finish. Bestfrom 2014 through 2038. 68 cases made. Score: 95

A few of the Great 2007’s still available2007 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets (low). Quite restrained at first, slowly opening toshow white flower, lemon and lime nuances with a long, spicy and mineral finish. Very fine andstylish. $95.002007 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanee (very low). It is the richest of the three premiercrus we offer with pear and subtle vanillan notes and a little wood spice. It reminds us of some ofRamonet's Chassagne Premier Crus. $95.002007 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles (low). Very complex nose, mineral and rich but withexcellent acidity carrying the fruit. The wine is mouthfilling but not fat with quince and citrus notes.Tasted blind soon after arrival by several serious drinkers who all thought it was Grand Cru. $115.00

2009 VintageNo tasting notes yet from Burghound or Wine Spectator.

2009 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les CailleretsUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $84.00Much tighter and mineral on the nose than the villages wine tastedbefore it. The fruit is ripe but the wine still retains drive on the finish. Will be ready to drink before the 2008 and there is nothing wrong withthat!

2009 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La RomaneeUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $84.00A very successful 2009. La Romanee is located high up the slope at thesouthern end of Chassagne. The site is well exposed, yet sheltered andproduces wines that are fuller and deeper than those from the northernend of the commune. Morey-Coffinet’s vines are now over 50 years oldproducing quite a powerful wine in 2009. There is spice and pear witha little toast from the oak and a very long finish. The style of thevintage has suited this appellation very well.

2009 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru En RemillyUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $84.00Morey-Coffinet have 0.35 ha with a vine age of over 50 years. 2009 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot FairendesUsual Price $99.00Pre-Arrival $84.00From a 0.17 ha site in the climat of Fairendes located within Morgeot. The site has more clay in the soil and thus produces a richer wine.Coates, and others, consider Fairendes to be the best part of Morgeot. The 2009 has cool white flowers and a little vanilla-pepper exoticism. It is a fuller, more powerful wine but tightens up with good acid on thefinish.

2009 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchots-DessusUsual Price $110.00Pre-Arrival $92.00In 2009 Morey-Coffinet made the grand total of 465 bottles ofBlanchots Dessus! This is the richest and fullest of the Premier Crus. There is peach and butter rather than spice and mineral. The wine ismore textural in the mouth.

2009 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les PucellesUsual Price $120.00Pre-Arrival $95.00A very small holding (0.19 ha) from reasonably young vines producingabout 4 barrels a year. This wine is rich and complex on the nose. There is wood spice and citrus backed up by a different acidity to theChassagne wines. Excellent race and not at all heavy or clumsy.Probably gets my nod as the pick of the Premier Crus in 2009.

2009 Batard Montrachet Grand CruUsual Price $250.00Pre-Arrival $225.00A powerful yet restrained nose of pear and flowers mingled with spiceand pepper. Morey-Coffinet’s Batard is never a blockbuster. It is moreabout capturing the nuances and expression of the vineyard and for thatreason the wine sees only 40% new oak. The wine is balanced andkeeps on coming in waves without ever being aggressive. A very smartGrand Cru at most attractive price.

Like most Burgundy domaines Latour-Giraud was formed by the fusion of two families. The Latour family’s wineholding can be traced back to the French Revolution and the Giraud family’s ownership in Meursault dates back to1850. In 1958 Pierre Latour married the only daughter of Charles Giraud creating the domaine. It is now run by hisson Jean-Pierre, who I found to be one of the most honest and interesting vignerons in Burgundy.

Latour-Giraud has good sized holdings in Meursault and is the largest landowner in the Premier Cru Genevrieres. They also have the Puligny Premier Cru Champs-Canet and a little Cotes de Nuits red as well as Bourgogne.

My visit was to taste the white wines, in particular the top Premier Crus, which have received excellent reviews fromBurghound and Tanzer. The 2008’s were in bottle and the 2009’s were mostly in tank awaiting bottling in the verynear future.

Jean-Pierre Latour picked his 2009’s early which is his usual practice. He uses about 25% new oak for the premiercrus. From the time of picking to bottling the aim is to retain freshness and avoid the heaviness seen in many lesserMeursaults. It is worth reading Remington Norman and Charles Taylor’s description of the domaine in The GreatDomaines of Burgundy.

The tasting notes. The one thing that you will continually read in the notes is the freshness and raciness of thesewines. Latour-Giraud’s Meursault are all about drive and freshness. They are not the broad, rustic wines of old

MagnificentMeursaultThe WWines oofDomaine Latour-GGiraud

Meursault. The scores from Burghound and Tanzer are high, in fact seriously high for Premier Cru wines. Burghoundgives many wines his “Sweet Spot” rating. I think you can read a little into the notes and comments that tells youthese wines are special. There is a pattern in most wine scribe’s ratings that seldom see Village wines rated abovePremier Cru or Premier Cru rated above Grand Cru. My experience tells me that quite a few top Premier Crus AREbetter than Grand Crus and the same applies to Villages versus Premier Crus. I can’t help thinking that if the labelsaid Grand Cru some of these wines would score even higher!

2009 Meursault Cuvee Charles MaximeUsual Price $79.50Pre-Arrival $65.00

This is a blend from seven lieu-dits the domaine owns. It is named afterJean-Pierres two grandfathers, Charles Giraud and Maxime Latour.

The 2009 wine opens with notes of ginger and spice. The palate is freshand lively. The palate is fleshy but the wine finishes with good line. Avery attractive wine for drinking now to five years.

Tanzer (all of his notes were made mid-2010): Slightly high-toned lemon, orange and spice aromas. At once sweetand bright, with lovely purity of fruit but a slightly lean texture. This may well flesh out with more time in oak. (Itasted the 2009 from one-year-old barrels, in order to get a more representative look at the wines that will eventuallybe bottled.) 87-89

2009 Meursault NarvauxUsual Price $85.00Pre-Arrival $72.50

Narvaux is located above the Premier Crus of Genevrieres and Poruzots.I have always thought it punched well above its weight and Latour-Giraud think so too opting to bottle their wine separately rather thanblending it into the Cuvee Charles Maxime. Their wine comes from a0.61 ha holding planted 55 years ago on the thin, poor soil andsubstratum of the site (great for minerality).

Lovely white flowers with a mineral aspect that takes the wine to another level. The wine has terrific mouthfeel anda super finish. Jean-Pierre dedicates this wine to afficionados! A super wine that is considerably better than manypremier crus.

Tanzer: Pale green-tinged yellow. Orange, lemon and spices on the nose, sharpened by a mineral component thatfollows through on the ripe yet dry palate. Very pure, juicy, intense wine that's quite tight today. This offers excellentpotential. 90-92

2009 Meursault 1er Cru CharmesUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival $99.00

The flatter site and deeper soil of Charmes produces a wine lesscharacterised by fineness than by intensity. The 2009 is the fullest andrichest of the Premier Crus we offer. It exhibits the typical hazelnut, butter characteristics with more bottom end than Genevrieres orPerrieres. A little more richness and openness but still with goodpersistence.

Tanzer: Nose dominated by vanilla and spicy oak. Densely packed but full of gas and quite oak-spicy today; already

Page 22: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

sweet and supple but I find this hard to assess with confidence. Latour says this one still needs more work. 90-93

2009 Meursault 1er Cru GenevrieresUsual Price $125.00Pre-Arrival $99.00

In the past I have found Genevrieres the most difficult to describe of thePremier Crus. Sometimes it was perfumed, other times almost oily. It isnot full and round like Charmes, nor lean and mineral like Perrieres. Iasked Jean-Pierre to describe his Genevrieres. He described hisGenevrieres as being a wine of many nuances. Nothing dominates andeach mouthful provides another alluring and subtle aspect. Wines likethis only happen when both grapes and winemaking are exceptional.

Latour-Giraud have a large holding of 2.50 ha with the vines planted in 1951, 1972 and 1978. The vineyard namecomes from the juniper trees that grew on the site long ago.

This wine is immediately more interesting on the nose. It has white flowers, spice and citrus with really fine, longacid. It combines power with elegance and all those little nuances Jean-Pierre has mentioned. There is a lot going on.At most domaines I find the Perrieres to be the top wine but here the Genevrieres is the winner.

This is great Meursault (look at Tanzer’s score!). I highly recommend this wine and would like everyone to try it. ThePre-arrival price has been kept below $100.00 to entice you!

Tanzer: Sexy aromas of orange blossom and spice. Still a lot of gas here too but this is pure and harmonious, withlovely cut and intensity to the soft citrus and honey flavors. Deep and complete wine; at once solid and refined. Ifind this rather open today, even if it still has evolution ahead of it in barrel. 91-94

2009 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ChampsCanetUsual Price $135.00Pre-Arrival $119.00

Champs Canet is located directly across the border from MeursaultPerrieres. It is something of a combination of both with the line anddrive of Puligny and nuances of Meursault. Not surprisingly the Latour-Giraud wine is subtle and racy with a nose of spice and white flowers.More delicate and restrained than the Meursaults.

Tanzer: Peach and clove on the nose. Sweet peach and spice flavors on entry, then quite biting in the middle palatefrom the high amount of CO 2 and hard to judge today. This seems rather high in acidity for this cuvee too. Thisvery young wine may well get a longer elevage than usual, according to Latour. 91-93

2009 Meursault 1er Cru PerrieresUsual Price $180.00Pre-Arrival $149.00 (Not available individually. Limit 2 bottles as part of any mixed dozen)

Named after the underground quarry which once supplied stone forconstruction of the village. Latour-Giraud have just 14 ares from whichthey produce about 2 1/2 barrels.

Much more mineral on the nose. A classic dry, almost austere, Perrieresthat begs for time to blossom.

Page 23: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

Tanzer: Orange, lemon and minerals on the nose. Fresh and gripping, almost austere, with a taut stony quality andsuperb precision of flavor. A distinctly rigorous, almost painful young Perrieres with terrific cut and energy. A veryclassic style in the context of this vintage-or any year, for that matter. 91-94

2008 Meursault Cuvee Charles MaximeUsual Price $79.50Pre-Arrival $65.00

A touch of sulphide on the nose that will appeal to many and addscomplexity. A racy style for the vintage with attractive weight and a acidfinish. A very good villages wine.

Burghound: A classic Meursault nose of hazelnut, white peach and pearcomplements rich and nicely full flavors that possess good mid-palate fatand solid volume on the racy, intense and highly energetic finish. Good if not special quality here. 86-89 Drink:2013+

2008 Meursault NarvauxUsual Price $85.00Pre-Arrival $72.50 (Not available individually. Limit 1 bottle as part of the mixed dozen)

I did not taste this wine as it had sold out. I have one case “to taste”.

Burghound: A similar yet slightly more elegant nose that is also coolermarries into the naturally sweet, rich and delicious medium-bodiedflavors that, like the Maxime, offer fine volume and mid-palateconcentration that buffers the firm acidity on the racy and intense finish. In sum, this offers a small but noticeablestep up in quality. 87-90 Drink: 2014+

2008 Meursault 1er Cru CharmesUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival $99.00

Lots of pear and white peach with the usual spice notes of the domaineand honeycomb of the vineyard. A slight touch of complexing sulphides.Quite a step up in weight and power from the villages wine. The wine isnot fleshy or fat and is concentrated and energetic on the finish.

Burghound: Ripe, fresh and exceptionally pretty yellow orchard fruit, spice and citrus hints introduce rich, generous, fleshy and full-bodied flavors that are solidly concentrated and moremineral-driven than usual and culminate in an intense, attractively textured and notably dry and lingering finish. Iparticularly like the lovely balance and underlying sense of tension here. 90-92 A SWEET SPOT WINE Drink:2014+

2008 Meursault 1er Cru GenevrieresUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival $99.00

Orange rind with a touch of pith, ginger and spice. The palate comes inwaves and finished with wonderful tight acidity. Very racy and long. Agreat Meursault which already provides serious pleasure! My pick of theentire offering.

Page 24: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

Burghound: This is less expressive than the Charmes but the purity of expression is superb with its discreetly spicedlimestone-infused white pear and lemon zest aromas that are very much in keeping with the equally reserved, tightand firm middle weight flavors that evidence a fine minerality on the gorgeously detailed and persistent finish. I verymuch like this and while the finish is decidedly linear today, both the balance and the underlying material are presentto allow this to blossom in time. 91-93 A SWEET SPOT WINE Drink: 2016+

2008 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ChampsCanetUsual Price $135.00Pre-Arrival $119.00

More Puligny race and cut. Citrus and mineral. An excellent premier cruwith a lot to offer.

Burghound: A beautifully expressive nose of notably ripe yellow fruit, white rose, spiced pear and hints of lemon introduce detailed, elegant, layered and intense flavors that are unusuallypowerful, minerally, pure and gorgeously long on the palate staining finish. This is very Puligny in character and asnoted, this is unusually ripe in the context of the vintage and while it's not presently exotic, it may develop in thatdirection with time in bottle. 90-93 A SWEET SPOT WINE Drink: 2016+

2008 Meursault 1er Cru PerrieresUsual Price $180.00Pre-Arrival $159.00(Not available individually. Limit 1 bottle1 as part of the mixed dozen)

I did not taste this wine as it had sold out. I have one case “to taste”.

Burghound: An ultra fresh and elegant white flower and citrus suffusednose possesses a copious amount of the usual stone influence that oneexpects from a classic example of Perrières combines with intense, delineated and mineral-driven flavors of striking depth and length. The quality of the underlying material is first rateand I very much like the understated Zen-like style here and this will be capable of many years of life. 91-94 ASWEET SPOT WINE Drink: 2016+

Chateau Pouilly lies in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuisse AOC region, about an hour and a half by car south of the Coted’Or. This history of wine making in the area is thought to pre-date the Romans with documents from the 10thcentury confirming a burgeoning business a thousand years ago!

The Chateau Pouilly was built in 1551 and for centuries has stood a proud ambassador of this white wine madeexclusively from the Chardonnay grape. Perched atop Mount Pouilly and surrounded by its own vineyards, theChâteau and its seventh generation of proprietors have kept watch over the land and the vines, respecting ancestraltraditions.

The wines come from seven hectares of vines located on the calcareous clay of thehillside. They are made in the small winery underneath the chateau. It is certainlynot a large concern so the owners are very hands on.

I tasted at the Chateau in February 2011 with a view to finding a cheap, fresh andinteresting alternative to the whites of the Cote d’Or. Chateau Pouilly typicallymakes two wines each year; Cuvee 1551, named after the year the chateau wasconstructed; and a Reserve wine which is matured with some new oak.

The Chateau is unusual in that it holds back itswine for release until it feels they have enteredtheir drinking window. At the time of my visit the2004 and 2006 vintages were the current releases.2007 was just available by a matter of days. Due to its proximity to the Cote d’Or,the vintages follow a similar pattern to their northern brothers.

My preference was for the Cuvee 1551 wines which were fresh and vibrant. Andthat is what I have decided to import. The style of the wine is somewhere betweenChablis and Chassagne-Montrachet with citrus and minerals, no oak impact and aricher mouth feel than you get with Chablis. If you are sick of over worked, clumsily oaked new world wines, but not too partial to the sharp, stony tang ofChablis, I think you will find these attractively priced Chardonnays to your liking. The wines are ready to ship and will be in Australia before the middle of the year.

2007 Pouilly-Fuisse “Cuvee 1551”Usual Price $49.95Pre-Arrival Price $42.50

Bright, fresh and clean. The 2007 has white flowers, pear and citrus withsome spice backing. There is attractive minerality leading to a fine acidfinish. Could easily be confused with a 2007 white from the Cote deBeaune. Attractive to drink now in this fresh stage but a few years in thecellar will add more complexity.

At the time of my visit the 2008 and 2009 wines were not released. AlexaCanal du Comet suggested we have a look to see what stage they are at.The net result is that the 2008 has been made available for Australia.

2008 Pouilly-Fuisse “Cuvee 1551”Usual Price $49.95Pre-Arrival Price $42.50

Just as is the case in the Cote du Beaune the 2008 wine is a little richerand riper. Still a very floral nose with a little more exotic fruit character, rather than intense citrus and minerality. The palate is still tightly woundand very vibrant. The slightly richer style of the vintage suggests thiswine will develop a little more rapidly.

Compared to many new world chardonnays both wines are freshand very enjoyable to drink. There is no obvious oak and no stirredlees character to muddy the taste. They are wines to enjoy, notstruggle to drink because of their extract and alcohol. Yourpreference will depend on whether you like a more mineral style(2007) or a little more fruit (2008).

The 2008 vintage in Chablis will long be remembered as one of the greatest ever. August and the start of Septemberwere cool and stormy and the vignerons were beginning to despair. Then along came October. It bought perfectsunshine to ripen the fruit and in conjunction with the long growing season, which helped concentration and aciditylevels, the harvest began in ideal conditions. Yields were slightly down due to irregular flowering and the dryweather leading up to harvest. Alcohol levels were ideal at 12-13 degrees. The result - a classic vintage!

Most 2008 Chablis of merit have been sold but we have found a parcel of superb Premier Crus from DomaineVrignaud. All three have gained Burghound’s “Sweet Spot” rating - recognition of their superb quality:price ratio.

DOMAINE VRIGNAUDThe Vrignaud family have been growers for five generations. Thefirst vines were planted in 1955 but it was not until 1991 that thefirst domaine bottles wines were sold. In 1999 the son Guillaumereturned from work in South Africa and took over responsibities forproduction. Since then the domaine has seen a rapid rise in qualityand prestige.

The Domaine owns 19 ha which includes 7 ha in the Premier CruFourchaume where theoriginal vines still thrive.

Vinification is traditional with old wood used on the Fourchaume.

Austen Biss in A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says “This is a domaine tokeep to oneself”. You can currently enjoy these highly rated wines at a verykeen price. And don’t miss the opportunity to pick up some hard to findmagnums - perfect for extended storage.

The vineyard Fourchaume: The largest and best known of the right bank premier crus. Theslopes are well drained with wooded hilltops and south-east, south and south-west facingelevations. Very floral nose, feminine wine with an elegant and fresh palate, flinty and mineralwith a touch of peach, develops nuts and biscuits with age. Fourchaume in the hands of agood grower is often refered to as being of Grand Cru status. Austen Biss

Burghound: This is mildly riper but notably more complex with a classic nose that featuresnotes of pear, green fruit and salt water aromas that precede richer and fuller-bodied flavorsthat possess good mid-palate concentration and culminate in a racy, focused, detailed, linearand mildly austere finish. A SWEET SPOT WINE 91 Points. Drink: 2014+

Austen Biss: 20% oak. Floral minerals, delicious concentrated fruit and acidity, rich, long.Drink from 2012 to allow oak to dissipate. Should be Very Good

The old vines are very low yielding with approximately 2 glasses of wine produced from eachvine!

Burghound: A restrained, pure and smoky white flower and stone nose marries into rich, freshand vibrant flavors brimming with dry extract that completely buffers the ripe and firm acidspine on the balanced, lingering and bone dry finish. I quite like this. A SWEET SPOT WINE92 Points. Drink: 2014+

The story of Domaine Giraud began in 1974 when Pierre and Mireille Giraud took on 4 hectares of Vines as tenantfarmers. Pierre, a descendant of the Armenier family, is the son of a long line of winegrowers going back more thansix centuries. Mireille’s family owned the village distillery for many generations.

Little by little they purchased pieces of rented land and in 1981 Pierre turned thedistillery into a cellar. In that same year the first of the domaine’s wines were produced. In 1987 the Armenier family vineyards were divided among the family members. Pierreand Mireille inherited 8 hectares including some 100 year old vines. In 1998 the firstestate bottled wine was sold and the Giraudchildren Marie and Francois began theirinvolvement in the domaine.

The family vineyards currently cover 19 hectaresand are well spread over the appellation. Theyhave century old Grenache vines in the lieux-ditsof La Crau, Terres Blanches, Les Gallimardes andPignan (next to Rayas).

In most years they produce three red wines including two special cuvees. Domaine Giraud’s wines are not huge, oaked blockbusters. They rely more on terroir and old fashioned principles to create classic wines. We have a goodquantity of the Cuvee Traditional wines but very small amounts of the strictly allocated Les Gallimardes andGrenaches de Pierre.

CUVEE TRADITIONThe red Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Tradition is a blend of 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 5% Mouvedre. Thegrapes are generally destemmed and a cold maceration is followed by fermentation which lasts 3-4 weeks. The wineis aged for 18 months in enamel-lined cement vats and stainless steel. Interestingly, the Syrah component is aged inBordeaux barriques to promote micro-oxygenation and give structure. It is then bottled without fining or filtering.

We have two vintages of Cuvee Tradition available - 2007 and 2009.

2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee TraditionUsual Price $75.00Pre-Arrival Price $65.00

2007 is a legendary vintage in Chateanueuf.

Wine Spectator: Gorgeously ripe and totally inviting, with lush plum, crushedfig, macerated currant and boysenberry fruit all gliding along seamlessly overgraphite, tar and charcoal notes. The superlong finish has well-embeddedacidity. Shows terrific poise, despite its explosive fruit. Best from 2010through 2025. 2,130 cases made. 94 points

The Wine Advocate: The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is a big-time sleeper of the vintage. Deeper-colored than LesGrenaches de Pierre, it offers beautiful, ripe black raspberry, licorice, cherry, roasted herb, and meat juice-like notes, full body, a voluptuous texture, and a superb finish that lasts for 40-45 seconds. A blend of 60% Grenache, 35%Syrah, and 5% Mourvedre from 70-year-old vines, all except the Syrah is aged in steel tanks and concrete. The Syrahcomponent spends time in small barrels. It should drink well for 15 years. 93 Points

Tanzer: Bright purple. Ripe red and dark berry aromas with complicating notes of licorice and sassafras. Smooth, sappy, penetrating blackberry and cherry flavors are given spine by gentle acidity. Finishes with impressive breadthand lingering sweetness-and little in the way of tannins to get in the way of early enjoyment. 91 points

2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee TraditionUsual Price $75.00Pre-Arrival Price $65.00

Wine Advocate: The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (a blend and upbringing identicalto the 2008) has a dark ruby/plum color, cuts a slightly broader swath across the palate thanthe 2008, and is perhaps at least a degree higher in alcohol. With its fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, it is already evolved and complex, but it should drink nicely for up to adecade. (89-91 Points)

Tanzer: Bright ruby. Singed plum and blackberry aromas are enlivened by pungentminerality and complicated by cracked pepper and smoked meat nuances. Broad and plushbut dry, with impressive volume to its dark berry and bitter cherry flavors. Finishes withdusty tannins and good persistence, repeating the peppery note. 88

LES GALLIMARDESLocated to the south of the appellation Les Gallimardes is the home of 100 year old Grenache,Syrah and several white varieties. It is classic Chateauneuf terrain made of big round pebbleswhich help hold the heat over clay. The blend for this wine is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Twopasses through the vineyard are made to ensure optimum ripeness and the grapes are typically100% destemmed. Fermentation, ageing and bottling is basically the same as the Cuvee Tradition.

2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Les GallimardesUsual Price $105.00Pre-Arrival Price $90.00 (Limit 2 Bottles)

Wine Advocate: A superstar in 2009 is the 2009Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes. A blend of 90%Grenache and 10% Syrah, with the Grenache aged incement tanks and the Syrah in barriques, this wine has adeep ruby/purple color and a striking nose of blackraspberries, black currants, cherries, licorice and springflowers. It is deep, full-bodied, dense, and one of the most

concentrated of the 2009s. A terrific effort in this vintage, it should drinknicely for 15 or more years. (92-94 Points)

Tanzer: Glass-staining ruby. Spicy, highly fragrant nose features perfumed black raspberry, lavender and candiedorange peel and showing hints of smoke and black olive. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly light on its feet;the intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are both taut and rich. Finishes very suave and long, withfully integrated tannins and lingering florality. 91 Points

GRENACHES DE PIERRESThis cuvee is sourced from the pure sandy soils in the Crau area and vineyards around Pignan. Itis made from 100% Grenache from vines over a century old and is named after the father Pierre.Winemaking is the same as the other red except that the wine is aged 18 months solely in concretevats.

No Grenaches de Pierre was produced in 2009. We offer current release 2008:

2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de PierreUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival Price $99.00 (Limit 2 Bottles)

Wine Spectator: Solid, with mulled plum, blackberry andfig fruit all woven together and backed by fruitcake, melted black licorice and espresso hints. A streak of applewood keeps the finish going, and there's enough reticentfruit here to merit cellaring, as this should stretch out a bitmore. Drink now through 2021. 220 cases made. 92 Points

Wine Advocate: The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre, which comes from sandy soils, is 100% Grenache aged totally in cement. This was one of the great 2007s, and theyfollowed it up with one of the few stars of the 2008 vintage. Seductive and sexy, this wine has a medium ruby colorand a gloriously fragrant nose of roasted Provencal herbs, ground pepper, kirsch and raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, without a hard edge to it, this is a lavishly lush, voluptuous 2008 which should drink nicely for 7-8 years.Just irresistible! Enjoy it, because they didn’t make this cuvee in 2009. 90 Points

Tanzer: Bright ruby. Complex, highly aromatic nose combines vibrant red and dark berries, potpourri, Asian spicesand a note of white pepper. Juicy and very intense but surprisingly lithe; spreads out to stain the palate with intenseberry and spice flavors. Quite distinctive and already showing very good complexity. 91 Points

Over the last 57 years the Geantet family have built up a domaine of 12 hectares from Madame Pansiot's originalthree. Three generations have recently been involved with Vincent, son of Edmond, currently in charge. His tenurehas seen a vast rise in quality.

The vineyards are cultivated by the system of lutte raisonnee. No herbicides are used and mildew and oidium aretypically treated with sulphur and copper sulphate. After harvesting the grapes are sorted four times to removeextraneous matter, broken berries, rotten fruit and finally sub-standard grapes. The grapes are chilled to 10 degreescelcius and macerated for up to ten days before fermentation begins. Approximately 30% new oak is used for allcuvees.

The wines are bottled quite early (12-14 months in barrel) without finingor filtration to capture the fruit while it is still fresh. Clive Coates in TheWines of Burgundy says of Geantet-Pansiot “These are intenselyflavoured wines, but not blockbusters. There is succulent perfumed fruitand good balance; no solidity, no hard edges. Geantet is a likeable man,and his domaine a very good source”. Remington Norman in The GreatDomaines of Burgundy proffers “This is fine, confident winemakingfrom a dynamic estate, whose wines have given, and will continue togive, great pleasure over numerous vintages.”

Producer note from Burghound: Vincent Geantet has hit an undeniablehome run in 2009 as these are very probably the best wines that I haveever seen from him. He called 2009 a vintage with "an almost idealgrowing season. I find it interesting that despite a steady progression of

maturity, things seemed to accelerate right at the end and you had to have your picking teams ready to go. We waiteduntil the 21st of September to begin harvesting and we were able to pick quickly as there was essentially no sortingrequired. Yields were generous but when the fruit is as clean as it was in 2009, your teams can bring in the croppretty fast. Potential alcohols were strong and everything, even the Bourgogne, came in between 13 and 14%. I did aclassic vinification that lasted between 20 and 30 days and had normal malos. I love the 2009s as they remind of the1990s, which is to say that they are very balanced wines with ripe and round tannins. As such, they will be agreeableyoung but age well too." Geantet pointed out that he also had excellent acidities with textbook-like pHs. I asked himhow this could be since he harvested late in the context of the vintage and he pointed out that a very high percentageof his vines are planted to 161-49 and 3309 rootstocks, both of which are much better at preserving acidities than aresay SO4 and 41-B.

We have purchased a small parcel of the exceptional 2009 Burgundies made by Geantet-Pansiot. I have not tried thewines, however, my contacts in Burgundy highly recommend them. And Burghound’s notes are very enthusiastic. They do sound delicious! Note that there are four Sweet Spot wines - a sure indication that Geantet-Pansiot isproducing outstanding wines.

Due to the small and even quantities I have decided to offer the wines as Mixed Packs.

2009 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes

Burghound: A highly seductive nose speaks of black cherry and liqueur of red raspberry that dissolves into vibrant, rich and impressively concentrated flavors that possess a tender mid-palate but firm up quickly on the focused, intense and palate staining finish. This is not as complex as the two old vine Gevrey cuvées but it's, not surprisingly, finer. A Sweet Spot Wine. 90 Points, Drink 2016+

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin

From vineyards located on the sandy soils below the RN74. Sorry no Burghound note.

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois

This lieu-dit has fifty-two year old vines that add depth and structure.

Burghound: A fresh and admirably elegant nose of red pinot and plum aromas that are liberally sprinkled with earthnuances that continue onto the unusually fine and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that possess a focusedand pure finish. This is simply terrific for its level and a wine of finesse. A Sweet Spot Wine. 91 Points, Drink:2014+

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

A serious wine made from a blend of 65 year old vines of the northern side of the village where the argilo-calcairesoil adds tannin and power.

Burghound: A relatively expressive nose of wild red berries, blue berry liqueur and earth undertones that are alsoreflected by the bigger and notably more robust medium-bodied flavors blessed with ample amounts of extract andan attractive touch of minerality on the seriously long and ever-so-mildly austere finish. A knockout at this level. ASweet Spot Wine. 91 Points, Drink: 2016+

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Poissenots

Les Poissenots is situated at the top of Clos St Jacques and enjoys the same high proportion of chalk in the soil.Remington Norman says “It is typically firmer and more closed with fine grip and length.”

Burghound: Here the nose is much more reserved with ripe yet cool and airy black raspberry and red cherry liqueuraromas cut with distinct stony notes that also appear on the rich, intense and beautifully well-detailed flavorsbrimming with dry extract that renders the otherwise firm tannins almost invisible on the dusty, focused andimpeccably well balanced finish. A first-rate Gevrey 1er of finesse and understatement. A Sweet Spot Wine. 93Points, Drink: 2019+

2009 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

The only Grand Cru from the domaine. Produced from .45 ha of 47 year old vines.

Burghound: A very ripe and highly complex spicy red berry liqueur nose is a mix of upper and lower register aromaswhere the aromatic depth is the best in the range is followed by rich, full and notably sweet big-bodied flavors thatare delicious and punchy, all wrapped in an extract rich finish that is also marvelously well balanced. This is reallyquite ripe yet it has everything it needs to age well over the next 12 to 15 years. 94 Points, Drink: 2021+

By Burgundian standards the Chateau de la Maltroye is a baby. The superb 18th century chateau with its 15thcentury cellars was purchased by the Cornut family in 1940. In 1995 Jean-Pierre took over from his father Andre andquality has rocketed in line with the domaine’s fine landholdings.

In the vineyards chemicals are kept to a minimum and the grapes are harvestedand sorted by hand. The chardonnay is pressed by pneumatic press and after lowtemperature fermentation they are transfered to barrel. the percentage of new oakvaries depending on the appellation with regular premier crus seeing around 30%and the top wines Dent de Chien, Ruchottes and La Romanee between 65% and100%. A variety of high class oaks are used with to complement the style of eachvineyard.

Today the wines are consideredamongst the finest in the village. The style is rich and powerful withdiscernable oak in their youth andsome complexing sulphidecharacter. They are serious and

considered wines with excellent distinction between the vineyards. IfDomaine Leflaive made Chassagne-Montrachets they could verywell taste just like these wines.

I tasted a number of the wines at the domaine in February 2011. I wasimmmediately knocked out by their power and concentration. Theyuncannily combine both to create a rare feeling of balance with richnessof flavour. Best of all we have cherry picked the finest of the domaine’s Premier Crus and have even managed towrangle a little of the terrific 2007 vintage to introduce you to these exciting wines. They are not cheap but thequality, power and richness (without heaviness) is exceptional. And they are cheaper than the Premier Crus ofDomaine Leflaive!

2009 VintageAll serious Burgundy drinkers will have read of the success of the 2009 vintage for red wines. If you have beenfortunate enough to taste you will understand why the wines are being compared to 1999 with perfect ripeness andsublime aromas.

But what of the white wines? I recall some early reports that the white vintage was rather ordinary. But as time rolls

CChhaatteeaauuddee llaa MMaallttrrooyyeeThe LLeflaive oofChassagne-MMontrachet?

Page 37: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

on, and now that virtually all wines have been bottled, opinion seems to be changing. Certainly the vintage is not asaustere and acid as 2007, but like the 2009 reds the whites show great style and purity.

Having tasted quite a number of the wines in February I am pleased to see the 2009 whites being praised as Icertainly did not see blowsy, tropical wines, soft wines at the domaines. In fact the purity and definition of the betterwines was delightfully surprising. The wines have lower acid than in 2008 but have no lack of freshness. DominiqueLafon considers the vintage outstanding for whites. The one consensus, if there is ever such a thing in Burgundy, isthat those who picked early were able to make wines from very healthy grapes with plenty of backbone and no surmaturite.

The power of certain wine scribes is irrefutable so it is great to read alternative opinions from other experiencedtasters. I like what I read in The World of Fine Wine Issue 31 2011 “Some critics have already declaredthis a supremely red-wine vintage, with the whites being not in the same class, lacking a little acidity. This seemswide of the mark. The best riposte comes from Gilles de Courcel, the master behind the renaissance of the venerablehouse of Chanson and its exceptional estate in the Côte de Beaune. De Courcel explains that since the flowering ofChardonnays had been quite heterogenous, chemical analysis could not give an accurate picture of the results. “Itwas only by tasting the heart of the cuvée, produced by the gentle pressing of the fruit, that we were able to clarifythe exceptional quality of the must,” he said. “First tastings from the cask have led us to believe that 2009 is anabsolutely exceptional vintage [for whites], in terms of both balance and delicacy.” In perfectionist hands like deCourcel’s, acidity is normal, satisfactorily supporting the ripeness.” “The Côte de Beaune whites provide someexquisite bottles. Meursault is a star this year. “The quality and consistency across the appellation hierarchy is betterthan in 2008,” writes the perceptive Sarah Marsh MW , editor of respected newsletter The Burgundy Briefing.”

2009 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Vignes BlancheUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival Price $99.00

Jean-Pierre Cornut considers the Vignes Blanches section to be the bestpart of Morgeot so he bottles it separately from his Morgeot Fairendes. The vines are almost 60 years old producing a rich wine of seriousdepth. Jasper Morris says “It is backward in its youth, tightly wound, yet with multiple dimensions waiting to emerge with age”.

Tanzer: Perfumed aromas of white peach and stone. Pure, sappy andenergetic; this boasts excellent clarity and intensity for Morgeot, especially from a warm vintage. Finishes juicy and long. Has thebalance to age but this tastes awfully good right now. 90 Points

2009 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Chateau de la MaltroyeMonopoleUsual Price $125.00Pre-Arrival Price $109.00From a 1.37 ha site in front of the chateaux. Vine age is over 50 years.Remington Norman “This fine, south-east facing slope gives abeautifully balanced wine with fresh honeyed fruit aromas, generousfruit on the palate and crisp finish”. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy “Asofter, gentler version of Chassagne yet always impeccably balanced.Supple, gently nuanced wine combining weight and minerality withoutbeing extreme in either. Only this producer is allowed to spell Maltroyewith a ‘y’ instead of an ‘i’ (in theory).”

Tanzer: Very pale color. Reticent nose hints at oak spice. At once sweet and penetrating, with ripe acidity givingshape and grip to the youthful stone fruit and mineral flavors. This, too, offers lovely balance. 90 Points

Page 38: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

2009 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes RuchottesUsual Price $159.00Pre-Arrival Price $139.00A 0.29 ha holding with vine age approaching 60 years. Jasper MorrisInside Burgundy “This wine tends to be relatively discreet at first butdevelops exceptional richness of flavour towards the back of thepalate. There is no feeling of oakiness despite the use of two-thirdsnew wood.”

Tanzer: Sexy, musky ginger and stony reduction on the nose. Verysweet and rich, but with no shortage of energy thanks to the wine'sstony underpinning. A lot of dimension for premier cru. Finishesimpressively long, with a continuing crushed rock quality. 91 Points

2009 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La RomaneeUsual Price $169.00Pre-Arrival Price $149.000.26 ha with vine age of 36 years. There is almost no topsoil inMaltroye’s parcel and the vines grow into fragmented, heavilyfissured rock. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy “The longest lasting ofthe Chateau’s Premier Cru vineyards thanks to its exceptionallyintense minerality, which for Jean-Pierre Cornut brings to mindCorton-Charlemagne.”

Tanzer: Aromas of white peach flesh and crushed stone. Sweet, broadand rich but with a light touch. This really saturates the mouth withperfume. Cornut likes to use a good percentage of barrels from theTonnelerie du Val de Loire in this and some of his other wines. The same wine from a Stephan Chassin barrelshowed musky peach and brown spice aromas; a suave, seamless mouthfeel; and terrific length. This should be abeauty. 91 Points

2009 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Dent de ChienUsual Price $210.00Pre-Arrival Price $189.00

La Dent de Chien adjoins Chevalier Montrachet and Montrachet. Thevines were planted in 1936. Remington Norman “...give a wine bothrich and honeyed whilst still retaining a crisp, fresh acidity.” In 1937much of La Dent de Chien was reclassified as Montrachet, I guess itwas a case of who you knew. Chateau de la Maltroye own more thanhalf of this exceptional site. A very serious wine which could easily beGrand Cru.

Tanzer: In-your-face aromas of ginger, cinnamon, crushed stone andiodiney minerality. Sweet and supple but less showy than the Grand Ruchottes or La Romanee. Plenty of spicy oakapparent today, but has the sheer concentration to support it. This very dense and suave but backward wine willrequire at least a few years of bottle aging to reveal the full force of its personality. Finishes very long, with arepeating element of crushed stone. 92 Points

Page 39: Grand Millesime 2009 Burgundy Pre-Arrival and Cellar Stock List

2008 VintageWhilst I am a fan of the minerally, lean 2007 white burgundies it is fair to say that not everyone agrees. Certainlythose looking for shorter term pleasure often find them a little to restrained, or just simply too austere and acid.Tanzer describes 2008 as “Minerally too, with greater density and richness than 2007, occasionally with a glyceral oreven exotic quality due to some botrytis; a thicker and more accessible version of “classic” than 2007”. Burghoundsays “2008 – Another Classic Vintage that is Essentially a 2007 Redux but with Better Concentration.....2008 is moreconcentrated, slightly riper and will be more agreeable young.....2007 is perhaps more for the hardcore traditionalistwhereas 2008 will please most enthusiasts”.

2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Vignes BlancheUsual Price $115.00Pre-Arrival Price $99.00Tanzer: Pungent aromas of white peach, pear, minerals and whiteflowers; very Chassagne. Then suave and juicy in the mouth, withnicely integrated acidity giving the wine a light touch. Conveys anenticing impression of sweetness but this is bone-dry (Cornut claimsthat most of his 2008s finished below 0.5 gram/liter r.s., which isextremely low). Strong and brisk on the long finish. 91 Points

Burghound: A classic Chassagne nose of yellow orchard fruit, resin andan herbal/earth character that carries over onto the generous, plump andsolidly well-concentrated flavors that possess a good level of dry extract that serves to buffer the firm acidity andadd a bit of flesh to the linear and moderately austere finish. This is less fine than the Chenevottes but compensateswith its superior length. A qualitative choice. A Sweet Spot wine. 91 Points, Drink: 2013+

2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Chateau de la MaltroyeMonopoleUsual Price $125.00Pre-Arrival Price $109.00Tanzer: Pale, bright yellow. Aromas of ripe peach and pear, lifted by afloral perfume. Lush, soft and sweet but with good minerality givingshape and finesse to the peach and floral flavors. In the rich, amplestyle of Morgeot yet maintains very good freshness. A lovely, long2008. 92 Points

Burghound: A somewhat more elegant nose of primarily dried rosepetal and freshly cut citrus zest trimmed in a hint of wood toast leadsto rich, full-bodied and utterly delicious flavors that retain focus and precision on the still tight, racy and distinctlyaustere finish. This is very much built on its minerality and is really quite stylish. Recommended. A Sweet Spotwine. 92 Points, Drink: 2014+

2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes RuchottesUsual Price $159.00Pre-Arrival Price $139.00Tanzer: Pale yellow. Pear and crushed stone on the nose. Quite ripe butserious and classically dry, with pear and stone flavors lifted by analmost peppery element. Really spreads out and lingers on theyouthfully austere back end. This needs some time. 92 Points

Burghound: A subtle trace of pain grillé adds nuance to the perfumedripe peach and apricot aromas that express a bit less citrus influencethan usual. The fresh, naturally sweet and unusually refined middleweight flavors are really quite sophisticated compared to the flavorprofile that one typically finds in a classic Ruchottes, all wrapped in a mouth coating, admirably intense and bonedry finish. This is a very serious, even brooding wine but if you have the patience and like the mix of a sweet mid-palate with old school acidity, it is recommended. A Sweet Spot wine. 92 Points, Drink: 2014+

2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La RomaneeUsual Price $169.00Pre-Arrival Price $149.00Tanzer: Vibrant aromas of pear, flowers and minerals. Fat and sweetbut less accessible and perfumed in the middle today. Quite pure andstony, but with fruit very much in the background. Finishes quitebackward, with a dominant element of wet stone. Hands off this for awhile. 91 Points

Burghound: Discreet oak notes don't compromise the expressivenessof the white peach and subtly exotic fruit aromas that introduceconcentrated, naturally sweet and textured medium plus weightflavors that possess excellent complexity and fine intensity. This iscertainly very pretty and unusually fine as well as slightly more mineral-driven than the typical example of LaRomanée. In a word, terrific. A Sweet Spot wine. 93 Points, Drink: 2015+

2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Dent de ChienUsual Price $210.00Pre-Arrival Price $189.00Tanzer: Musky, precise aromas of citrus fruits, quinine and iodineyminerality. Surprisingly rich and layered following the refined nosebut this very suave wine boasts plenty of energy and lift to its flavorsof pear, white flowers and crushed stone. Really echoes on the long, scented back end. 93 Points

Burghound: A reserved, pure and refined citrus and acacia blossomnose displays secondary nuances of pear and white peach aromas thatmerge into rich, concentrated and very powerful full-bodied flavorsthat possess a superb level of dry extract plus a strikingly long andexplosive finish that really stains the palate. This too finishes bone dry and will require extended cellar time to reachits apogee. Impressive. A Sweet Spot wine. 93 Points, Drink: 2015+

2007 VintageBurghound: “As the scores and comments suggest, I was highly impressed with Cornut's results and every wine inthe range is worthy of your consideration. I have pointed this out before but it's worth repeating. The style is modernbut it's modern with the highest quality raw materials. I have also found the style slowly becoming more traditionaland 2007 is perhaps the purest vintage that I have seen here. The wood treatment is not invisible but neither is itdominant with new wood running around 60% for the upper level 1ers. If you're not familiar with the wines, youowe it to yourself to take a look. Further, I asked Cornut what his present policy was regarding pre-bottling free SO2levels and he shoots for around 32 ppm.”

2007 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Chateau de la MaltroyeMonopoleUsual Price $125.00Pre-Arrival Price $109.00Tanzer: Less expressive and fruity on the nose than the Vigne Blanche, showing menthol and stone notes. Supple on entry, then ratherbackward in the middle palate, with lovely cut to the citrus and crushedstone flavors. Finishes broad and quite dry, especially following theVigne Blanche. Both of these parcels are always picked early, notedCornut, but this one is always more minerally. 91 Points

Burghound: A very pure, fresh, airy and more elegant nose featuresnotes of white flower, mineral hints and orange peel that also characterizes the delicious, sappy and concentratedflavors that are equally pure, textured and precise, all wrapped in an explosive, long and impeccably balanced finish.Excellent quality. A Sweet Spot wine. 92 Points, Drink: 2012+

2007 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes RuchottesUsual Price $159.00Pre-Arrival Price $139.00Tanzer: Very tight on the nose. Quite taut in the mouth, conveying analmost saline impression of strong dry extract to its high-pitched floraland stony flavors. This has almost Chablis-like cut. At once aromaticand powerful on the classically dry back end. Seemed to gain inbreadth with aeration and calls for aging. This should make an idealshellfish wine. 92 Points

Burghound: This is notably finer aromatically though not necessarilypurer with freshly cut lemon, dried rose petal and spice hints merginginto detailed, superbly intense and beautifully precise medium full flavors brimming with dry extract and a strikingunderlying tension on the energetic and almost painfully intense finish that goes on and on. Highly recommended. ASweet Spot wine. 93 Points, Drink: 2014+

2007 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La RomaneeUsual Price $169.00Pre-Arrival Price $149.00Tanzer: Pale color. Subtle aromas of fresh pineapple, stone andminerals, lifted by a note of hawthorn. Sweeter and suppler than theGrandes Ruchottes, but still quite broad and dry. Offers acompellingly fine-grained texture and mounts impressively on thevery long finish, which displays strong minerality without anyimpression of hardness. 93 Points

Burghound: At present, this offers the most complex nose in the rangewith notes of wet stone, white flower, yellow orchard fruit and citrusnotes that complement the intense, pure and detailed flavors thatculminate in a powerful and hugely long finish that completely coats and stains the palate. A classy and deep effort.A Sweet Spot wine. 93 Points, Drink: 2012+

Domaine Jerome Chezeaux has its origins in 1930 when Julien Missery purchased land in Nuits-St-Georges. Theholdings were expanded by Bernard Chezeaux and in 1993 Jerome took over. Jerome studied at the Lycee Viticole deBeaune and with on the job training alongside his father.

Whilst well versed in modern techniques it is the domaine’s aim to follow tradition, respect the environment andpreserve terroir in the wines.

The domaine extends over 11.3 hectares situated in the communes ofPremeaux, Nuits, Vosne and Vougeot. It produces four different NuitsPremier Crus - Rue de Chaux, Les Pruliers, Aux Boudots and LesVaucrains - as well as Vosne-Romanee Premier Crus Les Chaumes and LesSuchots. The domaine also owns a beautifully situated plot in the GrandCru Clos de Vougeot nested near the Chateau at the top of the hill.

All of the grapes are hand harvested, from the simple village wines to theGrand Cru. Jérôme employs a 3 to 4 day "maceration à froid" or coldmaceration prior to the alcoholic fermentation, which generally lasts two tothree weeks in open top cement tanks. During this time, the mustundergoes daily manual "pigeages" and "remontages" to extract colour, flavor and tannins from the grape skins. After pressing in a gentlepneumatic press, the wine is transferred into oak barrels where it undergoesthe malolactic fermentation in Chezeaux's underground cellar. One-third ofthe barrels are replaced each year, so the proportion of new wood in thewines is low by modern standards. The wines are aged 18 to 24 months inbarrel before being bottled without filtration.

The 2009 wines have just received glowing reviews by Antonio Galloni inthe Wine Advocate. “Jerome Chezeaux farms a total of 11.2 hectares of vineyards, of which 6.6 are estate owned. The fruit is 100% destemmed. Chezeaux favors fairly lengthy macerations. New oak levels are on the low side. As isthe case at many estates, the 2009s have a slight upper hand in many of the entry and mid-level wines, while at thehigh end the 2008s are superb. Either way, these are some of the most beautiful, classically built wines I tasted onmy trip. Patience is required, though, as these are sturdy wines that need bottle age.”

We are pleased to present another little discovery for your consideration!

We have had a number of requests for an affordable Bourgogne rouge. This one should fit the bill!

Wine Advocate: The 2009 Bourgogne is a pretty wine with lovely innersweetness and intensity in its fruit. Saline notes on the finish add liftand freshness. This is a terrific effort in its peer group. Anticipatedmaturity: 2012-2019. (87-89 Points)

Nuits-St-GeorgesChezeaux’s holdings in Nuits-St-Georges are particularly interesting. Nuits-St-Georges (NSG) is located at thesouthern end of the Cote-de-Nuits. It is a large commune cut completely in half by the town of NSG, the majorcommercial centre of the Cote-du-Nuits. The commune, when combined with the vineyards of Premeaux-Prisseywhich are labeled NSG, has no grand crus but boasts no less than 37 Grand Crus! (You’d think there would have tobe something of Grand Cru quality in the mix - and one could argue that there is. There is a move afoot to have Les-St-Georges promoted).

North of the town the vignoble is wide with a gentle slope away from the RN74. To the north is Vosne-Romanee andthe NSG wines from this section, which share the same Bathonian limestone soil covered with pebbles, silt and claytend to have much in common with their neighbour. They are finest and most subtle wines of the commune with thevery best coming from near the border where the clay content is the lowest.

Immediately south of the town the slope is narrower and the limestone Bathonian or the harder Comblanchien(popular for local building). The surface soil contains sand or gravel with less alluvial content. Here the best winesare the most powerful and some say truest expressions of NSG. This is considered the middle section of NSG.

Crossing further south into Premeaux we see thin soils over rock that result in wines that are more sinewy. There aresome interesting vineyards here including a number of monopoles (see our Patrice Rion offer).

2009 Nuits-St-GeorgesUsual Price $82.00Pre-Arrival Price $72.00Wine Advocate: The 2009 Nuits St. Georges is another terrific villagewine. It shows fabulous vibrancy along with a crystalline purity that istotally beguiling. There is an element of slight firmness here that willrequire bottle age to soften, but this is a dazzling bottle that only needstime, and the tannins only serve to balance and preserve the integrity ofthe fruit. This is a gorgeous wine at the village level. Anticipatedmaturity: 2019-2029. 90 Points

You don’t often see the word “dazzling” used to describe a village wine!

2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Rue de ChauxUsual Price $110.00Pre-Arrival Price $95.00I must admit that I have never seen this Premier Cru vineyard. It islocated at the very north of middle section.

Wine Advocate: The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Rue de Chaux is a dark, powerful wine loaded with generous yet cool, inward fruit. It revealssuperb length and an exciting, viscerally thrilling personality. Theradiance of the fruit shines on the expressive finish. This is a

beautifully complete, harmonious wine from Chezeaux. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. 93 Points

A serious review!

2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les PruliersUsual Price $110.00Pre-Arrival Price $95.00Wine Advocate: The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Les Pruliers bursts fromthe glass with an explosive, heady array of fruit. The wine revealsgorgeous persistence and fine overall harmony in a relativelyaccessible style for this house in 2009. A clean, pointed finish balancesthe fruit nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. 92 Points

2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux BoudotsUsual Price $110.00Pre-Arrival Price $95.00Located right on the border adjoining Vosne-Romanee Malconsorts(not a bad place to be!). Coates considers Boudots “...altogether moreVosne in character than Nuits”, “There is an elegant, potentialsilkiness here which is alien to Nuits... This vineyard is bottled by anumber of producers including Leroy (who charge somewhat more!).

Wine Advocate: The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Aux Boudots is a ratherdelicate, understated wine laced with crushed berries, spices andflowers. Silky tannins frame the graceful, feminine finish. The openbouquet and accessible personality make the Boudots a touch more pleasurable today than the Chaumes, but both aregorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. 92 Points

2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les VaucrainsUsual Price $159.00Pre-Arrival Price $139.00From the powerful centre section of NSG. Usually a dark, vigorous, rich and mineral wine capable of long ageing.

Wine Advocate: The 2009 Nuits St.-Georges Les Vaucrains caressesthe palate with an elegant, feminine expression of fruit. The Vaucrainsis all about restraint, class and refinement. It is a totally sublime winethat will blossom with further time in bottle. Anticipated maturity:2019-2029. 93 Points

Sweet mint, flowers and spicesfollow, adding complexity and textural richness. The finish is imposing, but readers who can be patient will be amply rewarded. This is anotherdazzling wine from Chezeaux. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. 92Points

2009 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les SuchotsUsual Price $159.00Pre-Arrival Price $139.00Located in the centre of the commune with Grand Crus galorealongside. To the north are the Echezeaux lieu-dits of LesCruots/Vignes Blanche and Clos Saint-Denis which were where HenriJayer’s and Emmanuel Rouget’s Echezeaux was/is sourced. Were it notfor the slight change in the lie of the land this vineyard could easilyhave been classified as a Grand Cru.

Wine Advocate: The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots is one of thehighlights in this set of 2009s. It is a totally complete, harmonious wineimbued with the essence of dark fruit, sweet spices, menthol andleather, all of which are supported by a firm vein of minerality. Intensely perfumed and mineral through to the finish, the Suchots delivers incredible class and sheer pedigree. The round, harmonious finish completes the winebeautifully. It will be fascinating to see where this goes from here. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. 94+ Points
