A Message from Fr. Tom

Here’s the reason I selected this topic: I suspect that it is really nice folks, church going folks who worry most. I’m not sure why it is. Maybe it has something to do with being super conscientious. Jesus’ assurance of peace was to prepare his followers for the kinds of challenges they will have to face. You and I may not be facing the challenges of those who heard the word of Jesus – no pits, lions, swords or crosses. But we do walk around burdened by the many issues of life – how we’re going to pay our house payments, save for our child’s education; concerned about the loss of our job; anxious about how we are going to make it without a loved one. It is good to know that Jesus has already spoken peace to our situation. Do not sink into the mire of despair. He has your well-being at heart. Hope in the Lord and trust in Him. Christ’s peace will be with us. This is the greatest good news we will ever hear. No matter our circumstance, Jesus will be with us! Someone has said the best thing about tomorrow is that tomorrow comes one day at a time. Tomorrow the sun is going to rise again. Somewhere birds will be singing, flowers blooming. You will still have food to eat and clothes to wear and you will be able to continue with your life. We need to hear Jesus speak a good Jewish word in our hearts – Shalom, Peace. He is always there for you with his arms wide open. Cast your cares on Him! Shalom!

My Dear Friends and Fellow Knights,

I am aware that most of us long for some form of inner peace. That’s why John 14:27 is a favorite for so many of us. Jesus says to His disciples and us: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Let us begin by asking an important question: Do you have a peaceful mind? Of course, you say, really? Are you a worrier? Are you married to a worrier?

I am always amazed at the things people find to worry about. A poet enumerates the things people find to worry about – the weather, one’s health, their business, their wealth, their children, their taxes, their future, their pets, their debts.” They worried about a lot of things---that did not come to pass!

Fr. Tom

A journalist asked Pope Francis on his trip to Kenya, “Your Holiness, are you not worried about insecurity where you are going because there are people who are targeting Christians?” Pope Francis replied, “There are bad people and there are good people. I am only worried about mosquitoes. Have you carried mosquito repellants?” It was a typical reply from Pope Francis, whose reign at the Vatican has focused on the youth, the vulnerable and climatic change. What he meant is that whereas majority of people are concerned with what they term as the biggest challenges that humanity faces, there were other small, almost forgotten threats that humanity neglects but can end up having fatal consequences on the world if you let them.

If we can get all 12 thru their First Degrees, we will need only 3 more new Brothers by June 30th to make our quota of 21 and satisfy the Father McGivney membership requirement. Shawn Renales, our Field Agent has promised me that he will be at the Degree Ceremony to speak to our new Brothers. Hopefully, he will be able to get 3 more insurance members that will satisfy the Founders' requirement and move forward to Star Council.

On Wednesday, May 25th, our Second Degree team will perform a Second Degree at the Home of Council 6201 on Bartley Road in Jackson. All First Degree Knights should plan on making this opportunity to advance their status.

On Friday, June 3rd, the NJ State team will present a Third Degree again at the Home Of Council 6201. This is a great opportunity for all Second Degree Knights to complete their journey to full Knighthood.

Please make a special effort to attend these Degrees especially if you are a sponsor. Your presence not only impresses those receiving the Degree but inspires the Degree team to deliver the Degree with impressiveness. I look forward to a great turn-out.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

A big thanks to the Brothers that helped on Blitz Weekend. We were able to meet some candidates and sign up additional new prospects. We had a very good turnout on our Candidates Social and was able to have four new candidates complete their Form 100 bringing our total to 12 ready for their First Degree on May 3rd.

Some Thoughts….. From Lecturer Bob Purcell

Respect For Life – May 2016

Every now and then a newspaper or magazine article appears and seems to just hit the temperament of our times. With all the things that are happening between lsis, presidential elections, taxes and the list can go on. The world is on Grumpy bandwagon.

The article "Fix Your Grumpiness" lists several fixes or reasons for this state. Hormonal changes can cause irritable male syndrome (IMS in men is just like the same as menstrual problems in women. Remember that when you go into the voting booth.

Other factors that can bring on this malady is a lingering cold. Diet sodas sweetened with aspartame may contribute to depression and irritable feelings.

Another factor is dehydration. Just a 2 % loss of body fluid can affect your mood and your brain's ability to function at its peak.

This is the one that made me think ... Unhappy Gut - This is referred to as your second brain. It is the place where 90% of your serotonin (the happy hormone) is made. If you have a gut inflammation caused by food intolerance you are going to be cranky.

You have to watch out for "sleep inertia" Some parts of your brain may take longer to get up and get going so don't push it. My drill sergeant in boot camp had no idea of sleep inertia.

Thyroid/iodine deficiency.---An underactive thyroid and lack of iodine have reached epidemic proportions in America and can cause irritability and you guessed it, grumpiness.

So what are we to do? For sleep problems try adopting a system that mimics the gradual rising of the sun. This system allows for turning off sleep hormones like melatonin and turns on ''wake-up" hormones like serotonin. Well sergeant it was like this, my serotonin was late in getting to work and I just did not get up on time.

You have to keep your gut happy. Take probiotics or supplements like Align or Culturelle which are loaded with healthy gut bacteria sold in most health food stores.

By now you are probably wondering what this has to do with Respect For Life. This is an attempt to see how we can overcome all the crazy things in the world. Be it political, international finance, the constant wars or any other factor that leads us away from a happier way of life let's look at ways to overcome some of the impediments to a more normal way of life. Oh and by the way, just take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

AND I have to be honest most of this was taken from an article by Sylvia Hubbard Newsmax magazine. You really didn't think I knew all this stuff. God Bless

Bob

May Birthdays

Report of the 4th Degree Msgr. Baldwin Assembly News

Our Fourth Degree Assembly has some interesting events coming up in June. You do not need to be a fourth degree knight to attend these functions so I suggest you consider attending with your family and friends.

On Sunday, June 12, the Assembly will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 2:00 PM at the Home of Council 836 located on Cedar Bridge Avenue in Brick. A local Boy Scout Troop will assist with the Ceremony and the Assembly Color Corps will act as Honor Guards. We will understand how to properly retire our country’s no longer usable flags with dignity. Hot dogs, hamburgers and cold drinks will be available following the Ceremony. If you have any old flags, bring them. There is no cost for this event.

I hope some of us, particularly our Sir Knights will support these different events.

Sir Knight Jim Mastrian, PGK, PFN

On Saturday, June 18th the Assembly is hosting a Day at the Races at Monmouth Raceway in Long Branch starting at noon. Cost for adults is $15.00 per person and $10.00 per child 10 years old and younger. You will need to pay for parking so consider carpooling with a brother knight and his family. You will receive a program and pen at the entrance gate. We have reserved a picnic area for our exclusive use. From it you will get a great view of the horses coming down the home stretch. Sir Knights will be cooking up a barbecue with beer and soft drinks for your pleasure. You can stay for as many races as you want and wager each race as you please. This can be a fun afternoon.

COOKS FOR ST. MARTHA

Cooks for St. Martha (The patron saint of cooks) are needed. Though I have a group of cooks already, I could really use more so as not to continue calling the same people and wearing out their good nature. A handful of them are Knights and their wives, however, they are only a handful. We like to help people just coming out of the hospital or who are going through treatment (usually cancer). We bring meals for the first week home for a new mother and father or it could also be someone who is recovering from surgery. There might be a family with someone in Hospice. These meals are meant to be temporary until these folks are on their feet again. A fresh meal will be cooked for the whole family or a single person if they live alone. The meals are delivered to their home ready to eat. As I tell everyone in my message in our Sunday bulletin, "We are many and wish only to serve." If after prayerful thought and discussion you decide you and your wife would like to be part of Saint Martha's Cooks, please call me, Gloria Carlon at (732) 961-7535 to give me your name and phone number.

Thank you and God Bless you.
