Letter from the Principal (continued)

One of the greatest challenges we have experienced this year is our

schedule. Many of our students access Career Center, Western Colorado

Community College, and Valley School as a part of their academic schedule

during their high school career. These programs are wonderful resources

that provide struggling students with hands-on experiences, while also chal-

lenging students with college and career-level classes. Unfortunately, because

our schedule for Thursdays was also made in an effort to preserve closed-

campus lunch for freshmen, a large number of our students attending Career

Center, WCCC, and Valley were missing between 30 and 60 minutes of in-

struction every week. In an effort to correct this problem, we have changed

our schedule to the one shown. This change should allow nearly every stu-

dent to attend the classes in their schedule at both GJHS and their Academic

Options placement.

***IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ATHLETES AND PARENTS FOR THE 2018- 2019

SCHOOL YEAR***

District 51 HAS MOVED to a new student athlete registration system. All athletes and their parents will be required to

register for all sports on ARBITER ATHLETE. The registration is similar to Family ID, but both parent and athlete will

need to complete the registration process. Winter Sports registration will be available October 1, 2018.

Athletic Registration for Winter Sports

Grand Junction High School has been selected to host a Naturalization Ceremony on November 14, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.. We would like to extend an invitation to students who are interested in learning more about the naturalization process. Naturalized citizens from various backgrounds come to the United States for var-ious reasons from countries around the globe. Each individual sworn has passed rigorous tests, background checks and waited the requisite time period to become a citizen of the United States. The purpose of holding the ceremo-ny at GJHS is for our students to gain a greater understanding of the naturalization process for new citizens to the United States. Please be aware that students will be in the ceremony during Tiger Time and excused from their 3rd hour class on this date and are responsible for making up missed instruction and class work.

Israel with Whiteford

Travel with Mr. Whiteford to see Israel in May 2019. This cultural experience will take students to the

cradle of the modern religious world and allow them to walk the same roads as King David, Jesus, and Moham-

med. It’s an opportunity to explore these sacred sites and face ancient history eye to eye. Contact Mr. Whiteford

or Mr. Brown if you are interested in joining this pilgrimage.

Your Kid And Citing Sources

No! Wait! Don’t run screaming from this paragraph! Citing sources isn’t the painful process it was

when you were a student! These days, there are citation makers that help students to create the Works

Cited sheets that come at the end of research papers. The GJHS Library subscribes to a resource called NoodleTools. This electronic helper walks your stu-

dent through what s/he needs to do to correctly create citations for a works cited page. It even has a fea-ture that helps users organize research onto digital notecards.

If your student needs help getting started in Noodletools, have him or her go to the Database page on the GJHS Library website. There, find tutorials and other information to get started. Or have your

kiddo stop by the library and get a lesson from Mrs. Middlemas.

BOYS TENNIS: The Tiger Tennis team finished the season very strong. The Tigers took 2nd place at Regionals and sent seven players/5 teams to the State Championships. The Tigers were SWL champions for the 4th year in a row and took 9th place at state. The Tigers also racked up the all-conference selections with two second-team and five first-team honors. Cameron Weckerly, Cal Hegstrom, Max Nikkari all were first team selections for singles. At the doubles positions, Luke Aubert and Riley King, and Joseph Hirschbuhl and Levi Prall took first team honors. Way to go Tigers on a great season!

BOYS SOCCER: Ending the GJHS Tiger boys’ soccer season with an 8-5-2 record was a great accomplishment for all of the underclass-men who stepped up this season to fill the shoes of the 10 seniors who graduated last season. Thank you for all of the support from parents and students for coming to the home games and even traveling to away games. Coaches cannot wait to see what the future brings for the soccer program at GJHS. Congratulations Tigers!

VOLLEYBALL: The GJHS volleyball season has now concluded. It was a tough season filled with a few disappointments and even roadblocks to victory. It did not go as everyone had hoped, but we are reminded amongst our toughest challenges, and at times our losses, comes learning opportunities and chances to strengthen ourselves. The volleyball coaching staff hopes the girls were able to make some deep friendships, learn about themselves, and become stronger through the chal-lenges we all faced. Because in the long run, it does not matter how many victories or losses a team earns, but the true character that was portrayed through practices and matches. It is important to remember that actions speak louder than words. Congratulations to the GJHS volleyball players and the very best of luck to all of the girls!

FOOTBALL:

Thank you to all students, parents, administrators, trainers, faculty, staff and Tiger fans that helped make this season a meaningful one. Thank you to the dedicated coaching staff who share their time and enthusiasm for teaching football and mentoring young men. Congratulations to the student-athletes who made the fall of 2018 an outstanding football season. Tiger Pride has been the gold standard at Grand Junction High School. Our Tigers always strive to meet this standard each and every season. We are especially proud of our many fine student-athletes. We would like to recognize all the student-athletes that put in the extra effort to academically better themselves. First and foremost, each Grand Junction High student-athlete is a student. There is no football at Grand Junction High without academic commitment. While the teams in the program had mixed win-loss records, they enjoyed their share of big victories (this year’s Home-coming will go down as one of the more memorable games in recent history) and emotional defeats. The games of this past fall will eventually fade into fragmented memories. In the end, the measures of success are not the statistics or wins, rather, they are the friendships, lessons and maturing that are the result of effort, selfless commitment to the team and dedication to personal betterment. The student-athletes of the 2018 Grand Junction High School football program were truly successful. As coaches, we are fortunate to have been a part of it. As we look back, we cannot help but, also look forward to fall 2019. We will have our largest Senior class this program has seen in many years. We will have very good numbers from Juniors/Sophomores as well. We are excited to see how the student-athletes of 2019 embrace the legacy of the 2018 season. Brickbybrick Tiger fans!

BOYS GOLF: The GJHS Boys golf team has completed another successful season. The Tigers best team finish was 2nd at Conquistador Golf Course on August 9 in Cortez. The team finished in the top five at four other tourneys this fall. Sophomore Carson Kerr finished 10th at the state tournament, earning all-state honors. Carson, as well as, Nate Frahm, Dawson Weihl, Jaden Stewart, Dawson Collins, and Cameron Weckerly all earned varsity letters for the Tigers this season.

SOFTBALL: GJHS Softball would like to congratulate the following players for their All Conference selection: 1st Team

Breck Smith Kali Kisselburgh

2nd Team Erica Broderson Haeleigh Harris Jordyn Stephenson

CROSS COUNTRY:

The Tiger Cross Country team is looking forward to our end of the year team banquet as we reflect on some of the

highlights of this past season. We started the 2018 season with a lot of new faces, and they quickly became part of the

team, thanks in no small part to the following members: Skylen Latham, Gaege Fink, Jake Griffin, and Kole Arellano.

These athletes truly represent what it means to be a part of Tiger Pride. Some standout athletic performances were on

display all throughout this season and those carried over to regionals with our fastest male athlete, Junior Reese

Fledderjohn, setting his personal best time of 17:57. Some standout performances from our sophomore boys have to in-

clude Connor Murphy and Kyle Reed. Both saw a 2 minute and 3 minute improvement, respectively, to their overall

times this season. This season also brought us an amazing freshman athlete by the name of Amelia Moore who showed

us that through hard work and dedication, a 4 and a half minute time improvement is possible. Amelia wasn’t alone in

her outstanding effort this year because returning sophomore Mandy Moran was just seconds away from running a sub

20 minute race by improving her personal best by over a minute. Each athlete should be proud of what they accom-

plished this year whether it was improving their time from last season or just finishing a race with an injury. Everyone

on the Cross Country team put themselves out there and competed with the toughest critic in the world: themselves.

Coaches are already looking forward to building on what was a great season. “Bross Bountry” 4 life.

Hello from the Health Office!

Student Council Initiates “Remember November”

Twenty students from Germany and two of their teachers arrived on the 23rd of October from our partner school, Gymnasium Markt Indersdorf. They will spend three weeks here at Grand Junction High School and will be host-ed by twenty of our students and two of our teachers. In turn, our students and our teachers will be spending three weeks with them in Bayern (Bavaria) this coming summer.

The German Exchange Students are here!

Students have access to ClassLink, which is a system that they can use to get to their files, library databases, their school e-mail accounts, MS Office programs and more. Plus, it will look the same to them at school, on their phones, at home, AND sign them on to all of these accounts. Getting to all these resources just became a whole lot easi-er.

To Use ClassLink:

From your smartphone: Download the App. Just look for D51 ClassLink at the AppStore.

From your computer at home: Google GJHS. From there, look for the link to Classlink (it will be on an orange dot, right where there is a link to ParentVUE and other handy resources).

Need help? Stop by the GJHS Library and ask Mrs. Middlemas!

Access Everything on Electronic Devices at Home

With fall here and our first round of illnesses, we wanted to let you all know some illness guidelines. It is rec-ommended to keep your child at home if there is a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. These illnesses are contagious for approximately 24 hours after the last episode without medicine. Please encourage your students to wash hands and not touch their face during the day. Other illness prevention methods are taking shoes and coats off at the door, changing clothes and washing hands once home.

Yesica and I are starting to process immunizations. If you would like to exempt your student, please remem-ber personal and religious exemptions need to be signed once a year. We will be sending notices home in October for students missing shots.

If you have questions or your student has a health condition and needs medication or other medical interven-tions at school, please feel free to contact us at 970-254-6900 ext 24191. You can also access several of our health forms on the District 51 website at http://www.d51schools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=81872&pageId=164742, or you can follow Nursing Services links on the website. Best of Health to you all! Mel RN and Yesica HA

Student Council is hosting ‘Remember November’, a month-long campaign to positively impact the campus of GJHS. Each week of November will focus on something different to ‘Remember’: the 5th-9th has a focus on remembering Self Worth, the 12th-16th will encourage students to remember the Importance of Others, and the 26th-30th will be concen-trated on remembering What Makes You Happy. There will be interactive activities for students to participate in and begin engaging in important conversations related to these various topics.

GJHS Cheer Update

GJHS CHEER finished up their football season and are getting excited to compete at regionals in November and the state competition on December 7th in Denver. The team would like to thank all the local sponsors from their T-shirt fundraiser as the monies raised helped the team purchase new flags and signs for their competition routine! The Cheer team would also like to thank all of the families who continue to support the program!
