Hello and welcometo our March edition.
Already continually the localmagazine with the most pages, wehave added more this month.
This is the time of the year when wesee a hint of spring, with theblossom on the almond trees. Wehave used this as a backdrop picturethis month.
We with many others enjoyed awarm sunny day for the opening ofGran Alacants first park. The Mayors wife cut the ribbon toofficially declare the park open, theneveryone were allowed in to try outall of the equipment, or just towander through this lovely relaxingarea. We know throughout all of ourmeetings, that this was a dreamcome true for our Councillor LoretoCascales, who had spent manyhours getting the idea to fruition.
We always seem to be at theopening of something new in thearea. Report & pictures in this issueof the opening of the revampedSanta Pola football stadium, whichwe have to say, is very veryimpressive.
Have a good monthSandra & Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005.
The big news this month was theofficial opening of Gran Alacants firstpark.A massive crowd turned out to see themayor Miguel Zaragoza and thecouncillor for Gran Alacant, LoretoCascales open the 350,000 euro, 5,000m2, project. We have pictures showing the big
crowd who turned up, and thefacilities on the inside of the park. Playareas for the children, seating areasfor a well earned rest, and areas tocongregate, sit and chat. Everybodyseemed very impressed with this newedition to the ever increasing facilitiesbeing provided for us all on GranAlacant, by the Santa Pola Council.
We at the magazine have had somany complaints about theamount of dog excrement left allover Gran Alacant. Loreto saysthat doggie bins have beenprovided and no one takes anynotice, signs have been erected, and nobody takes any notice. Itis sad for all of us to see thiscontinued lack ofthoughtfulness. The police arealways watching, but it verydifficult to catch them.Does anyone have anysuggestions?
The train is on the way. Meetingstake place this week ( Feb 16th)
TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 5
to decide the colours of the trainand to finalise other decisions.
No date yet to start the newmarket place.
The general upgrading of thesports centre should becompleted before the end ofJune.
All final bits and pieces of thenew Clot walkway are at the finalstage, and the date for theofficial opening will beannounced in the near future.
The second week of March is the“week of the working women”and celebrations will take placewith various festivals, in SantaPola between 8th and 14th ofMarch.
As you will see in one of theemails sent to us, suggestions oftrips to help the older childrenenjoy the area more. The start ofhelp for younger and olderchildren will be when the newYouth Club is officially opened inthe hall at the Life Resort at thetop of Gran Alacant. With regard to bus trips. Ifanyone can get together at least40 people wanting to go on atrip, Loreto our Gran Alacantcouncillor would help makearrangements for a bus. Thetrouble is if only a few turn up fora large size bus, someone is
going to have to pay for the lackof “bums on seats”.Would anyone like to comeforward and organise such tripsand perhaps make up a list ofinterested people? We at themagazine would willingly help topublicise any events.
A make over is taking place atthe Municiple Health Centre. Thelarge space that used to housethe Police Office in the front ofthe building is being turned intoa new Paediatric Surgery whichwill be staffed by a Doctor andNurse 1 day each week. At themoment all Gran Alacantchildrens injections etc have totake place in Santa Pola but willbe available here on oururbanization. So many facilities that once wereonly available in Santa Pola arenow being achieved on GranAlacant.
We did ask Loreto about no dogsallowed in the New Park and sheconfirmed that there is a signsaying NO DOGS, anotherexample of people ignoring signswhen we see dogs inside thepark.
The British Consulate is comingto Gran Alacant to talk to theBritish on 12th March at 10.30am in the Life Resort theatre.

Hello and welcome to my beauty page.
This month I an going to be discussing Reiki and Reflexology
Reiki/spiritual healing. (I have done the first stage of this training)Reiki means universal life force energy in Japanese. Reiki healers act aschannels for this universal energy to pass into the client. By using their hands incertain positions on different parts of the body, the healer is said to draw energyto the body, promoting healing, balance and relaxation.
ReflexologyThis is a holistic therapy which treats the whole person, particularly weak or illareas, by using the clientʼs feet as “maps” of the body. On the feet there arepoints or zones which correspond to different organs and systems of the body.By pressing on one of these points, the corresponding organ in the body isaffected. For example, pressing on the tip of the big toe will cause a response inthe brain and vice versa, if there is a problem with the brain the reflexologist willrecognize the symptoms of this in the big toe. This relationship, between a pointon the foot and another part of the body is known as a reflex. A trainedreflexologist uses finger or thumb pressure on each of the zones to find theproblem areas. They then apply more pressure which helps the correspondingpart of the body to heal
Thatʼs all for now folks.
Next month as it is time to get those toes out, I will be discussing Pedicures.

Poem for the month, from our phantom poet
March WindsMarch Winds March winds blow across the bay,
Quick to dry your washing better than a summer’s day.
Your Bridget Jones or sexy thongs blow wildly in the breeze,Just to find them pegged online would put your mind at ease.
The sandy dust lands at your door you sweep and mop forever, terraces filled with wind blown leaves as you struggle to endeavour.
Hats and scarves like flying kites, air that takes your breath away,Yes March winds have returned again to Alicante Bay.

Dear Barry and Sandra,
Having just arrived back home in UK after enjoying a holiday in ourproperty in Puerto Marina, we would like to thank you for all yourefforts in trying to improve all areas of GA, and agree with the letter from Linda which youpublished in the January edition of the Gran Alicant advertiser concerning the entrance to GA,we must agree that a parade of trees is definately required from the entrance to the firstroundabout from the n332 past the commercial centre to the roundabout.GA certainly needs some greenery and camouflage to break up all the large advertising signsthat are there .We enjoy reading the GA magazine and appreciate all the good work being achieved with thehelp of loreta for the whole of Gran Alicant - please keep up the good work !
Wendy&David
Dear Barry and Sandra
We visited the new park on Sunday afternoon, what a delightful place and the children werereally making use of all the facilities and enjoying themselves. One thing we would like to seeis a notice :STRICTLY NO DOGS ALLOWED AT ANY TIME; There were a few dogs in thepark and also some of their mess, which of course is dangerous for the children.
Congratulations to Loreto on her achievement.
Cheers, Maggie & Chris
Hi Barry
A few of us got together the other night and were saying thats its great for all the youngerchildren in gran alacant with all the new parks and the community center going ahead, buttheres not much for us to do so we were thinking it would be great to have a bowling alley hereor similar and if thats not possible then maybe coach trips could be organized once a month togo to the bowling allies, cinemas, ice-rinks and other places of interest.
Through the summer we always hear parents saying that their children will not be visiting nextyear as they are bored (teenagers who donʼt like to sunbathe and can not drink) so I think thiscould be a good thing for gran alacant
If you also think this then could you possible bring it up at your next meeting?
Thanks
Dear Barry & Sandra
Following our recent visit to GA and reading this month's Advertiser, we thought we must writeto agree with the others concerning the dog fouling. We also areconcerned that if nothing is done soon it will be completely out of control. We live opposite thewasteland next to the school and watch each day as owners allow their dogs to foul and notclean it up. Not only is it unpleasant, especially if we are sitting on the patio, but it must be ahealth hazard, as we have mentioned before, to the children in the school as they do play there. As the rest of the area is now looking good with trees, fencing and play areas, our sectionseems to be completely left out. Would it not be prudent to fence off the wasteland area, nothingposh, low fencing like the beach road and continue around with a few trees as planted on themain road. An area, nearer the main road, away from the residential side, could be left open fordog walking with bins placed for use and this could also be easily watched for offenders. It does seem a shame that this subject raises it head every time, but we feel that GA is nowstarting to look smart and wish to see it improve even further.Lyn & Don Lucas

For AdoptionHannah is a Doberman, possibly across because she is smaller than mostDoberman’s. She is 18 months old and verygentle. Someone made an attempt tocrudely cut her ears and it is the vetsopinion that this was done without anyanaesthetic when she was a young puppy.Harley is a Doberman cross, approx 8months old and very gentle, his ears havealso been crudely cut right back. It iscommon in Spain for certain types of people to do this, they believe thatit makes a dog to look cool! Hannah is a very loving dog and likes nothingmore than to lay on a blanket on the floor next to you, she will be avery loyal pet for her new owner. Harleyis a very loving dog and likes to play, hewill be a great pet, he does not knowthat he has cropped ears.
Bilbo is a beautiful largeGerman/Belgium Shepherd. Heloves everyone and everything, including children and cats. Heis approx 3 years old and willbe happy living in a house withjust people or where there isanother dog or two.
This 1 yr old Chihuahua cross wasfound in a local village during a fiesta. She was
extremely thin and we did not realise at the timethat she was also very pregnant. Just two days
later she started to give birth and we rushed herto the vet clinic for an ultra scan. We discoveredthat she had three puppies inside her and their
hearts were beating. However, they werepremature and it took more than 24 hours for her
to give birth to them. Unfortunately one wasstillborn and the other two died soon after they
were born. We have named her Cindy, she isrecovering well in a foster home and she likes
nothing more than to sit on a lap.For more information please call 676 447 682

BEST EVER BLONDE JOKE
A blonde calls her boyfriend and says, "Please comeover here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I
can't figure out how to get started." Her boyfriend asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The blonde says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spreadall over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, thenturns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able toassemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let'shave a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh. .. . ...
"Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."

Hi everybody,
This month there are not too many fiestas going on, just getting ready for Holy Week nextmonth. There is only one parade of Moors and Christians in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) 17th to 21st. If you do not want to go to the big fiesta in Valencia you can enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego.
Here in The Costa Blanca as I’ve told you this month is very quiet . In Valencia takes place oneof the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” the programme is too long but there are parades, floral offerings, this event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks, dancing and music everywehere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers) you can think of.
Byebye.

One day a little girl was sitting and watching hermother do the dishes at the kitchen sink.
She suddenly noticed that her mother had severalstrands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her
brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are someof your hairs white, Mum?'
Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrongand make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'
The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and thensaid, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

Now open for business -the Estadio Manolo Macia
By Kevin Rendall
On a cloudless but deceptively chilly late Januarymorning, almost a thousand people attended the inauguration of Santa Pola’s remodelled EstadioMunicipal Manolo Macia, home to Club Atletismo deSanta Pola and Santa Pola CF. The football teamlast played there eighteen games and more than sixmonths ago and on their long awaited return, allconcerned with the club were delighted with theirnew home.
After the traditional tape cutting ceremony, localMayor Miguel Zaragoza - Fernandez and Don Bernabe Cano, Valencian Autonomous GovernmentDeputy for Sport, declared the place open for business and began a short inspection tour of thefacilities accompanied by local photographers andjournalists.Costing just over nine hundred thousand Euros, the
SantaPola

project was completed on time and without goingover budget by Alicante construction company ZicloConstruccion in conjunction with Santa Pola Ayuntamiento architect Maria Jose Mogica. SantaPola CF already had the best playing surface in theleague and now they, and the town, have a simplystunning sports facility.
Where was all that money spent? Previously, theold stand roof left spectators open to the elementsand at times cast a shadow over part of the pitch. Now the entire seating area, which was also increased by twenty five metres either side of theoriginal, is completely covered and includes twocommentary/press booths, together with a state ofthe art PA system. That though is the obvious improvement, visible to everyone. Out of sight tomost visitors the new, improved Manolo Macia alsoincludes an immaculate gymnasium, ticket office, treatment room and more than 1000m2 of storagespace. Outside, powerful new floodlights replacetheir aging predecessors, the perimeter fencing hasbeen upgraded and the entire edifice has beentastefully glazed and tiled. There was even a littlespare cash at the end for an electronic scoreboard.Prior to the first match at the remodelled stadium,an exhibition game between two of the Santa Polaacademy teams, there were a series of short

speeches by local dignitaries to officially declare the stadiumopen. Said Miguel Zaragoza,
“Santa Pola now has a facility second to none locally, with this wecan move forward with our stated aims of promoting healthamongst our youngsters through sport and in the process emphasise Santa Pola as a tourist destination of high quality”
His words were echoed by Bernabe Cano who added “Santa Polanow has an enviable sports ground the entire community canenjoy and benefit from”
As you can see from the photographs of the very well attendedevent, the money was very well spent indeed.

St Valentines Day massacreOn into February the 2009/10 Preferente
season continued apace with the gamesnow reverting to the familiar pattern ofaway and then home fixtures.Next to try their luck at the Manolo Macia
were Hercules B, a huge crowd bolsteredby a large visiting contingent saw the visitors systematically destroyed by a rampant Santa Pola who finished the gameworthy 4-1 winners. With largely the samestarting eleven and thoroughly good teamperformances, Santa Pola could easilyhave had this kind of pleasing result intheir previous couple of games, for whatever reason though it wasn’t to be.Football, at whatever level, most definitelyis a funny old game. The final February fixture before the Advertiser went to presssaw the” Rojiblancos” travel to bottomclub Aspe for what, on paper, should havebeen a relatively straightforward win. Earlier in the season Aspe were soundlybeaten four-nil and so Santa Pola arrivedwith high hopes. Nothing is certain thoughin soccer and another goal-less draw onan absolutely diabolical pitch saw Aspescrap for their lives to keep Santa Pola at

Santa Pola made use of the nearby ElsCiprerets and Pereira grounds, the teameventually returned to their Manolo Maciahome towards the end of January.Elsewhere in this months Gran AlacantAdvertiser there are some words and a
picture gallery from what was a very wellattended inauguration ceremony. Laterthat same afternoon in order not to clashwith the organised chaos that is the town’shalf marathon event, Santa Pola kicked offwith a rare Saturday match in their firstgame back.
Thader de Rojales were the visitors, ateam not renowned for setting the leaguealight, and on the day of the match, threeplaces worse off than Santa Pola in theleague. The 0-2 home loss therefore wasdoubly disappointing, with the utmost respect, Thader are an ordinary team atbest. In fairness to Santa Pola, they battledhard for the entire ninety minutes andcame up against a visiting goal-keeper inoutstanding form. In the end, a secondgoal for Thader deep into injury time denied Santa Pola the chance of a pointand ensured they slipped to defeat.
A week later Santa Pola re-acquainted

So you’ve got your Spanish Will. But what arethe consequences of your actions. Did anyoneexplain Inheritance Tax in Spain to you? Probably not.
Sadly enough, it is a fact, that everybody must departfrom this world at one time or another. Their assets, however, will remain. Those goods and assets that belonged to the deceased person at the time of his/herdeath form their inheritance. For many it is only during a time of grief that the
question of Inheritance Tax raises it’s head. And forsome it is a great shock. Fiscal Residents of the Communidad Valencia receive tax relief on Inheritance Tax. Unfortuntately, what constitutes a Fiscal Resident isoften not appreciated and whilst many people havelived here for years and believe that they are a resident, they are not. This leads to difficulties with Inheritance Tax.A further problem is often the construction of the Willitself. Many couples are in a second relationship withchildren from a first and proper and adequate planninghas often not been given as to how to deal with this. This again can have a significant bearing on Inheritance Tax, particularly for unmarried couples.
To consider each individual situation, you need to lookat the value of the assets in Spain, the relationship betweenthe deceased and the beneficiary and the networth of the beneficiary. All these factors are takeninto account to calculate Inheritance Tax.For those who are not fiscally resident in Spain they
should look carefully at their situation, and where appropriate ensure that they have sufficient funds setaside to pay Inheritance Tax in the event of their death.A further important factor is that for many they
ultimately leave their assets to their children who areusually not resident in Spain. They will have Inheritance Tax to pay because they will not benefitfrom the tax relief available to fiscal residents. There is also the misconception that there is no
inheritance tax because it is below the threshold. Thisview is based on the allowances in the UK which haveabsolutely no standing in Spain.
In certain circumstances there are no allowances for a beneficiary in others there is an allowance of just under 16000€ which, lets be honestis not much. So when faced with this situation there isthe question of who inherits and to what extent their liability is to inheritance tax.
Whilst fiscal residents in the Valencia Region and their spouse/children who are also fiscallyresident in the region dobenefit from 95% tax relief, sadly is it not available for anyone who does not fallinto that criteria such as a partner or non

resident. This is particularly relevant to those
couples who are unmarried. Will or no Will there is notax relief and the tax payable is at a much higher rate.Don’t forget that you can leave your assets to childrenfrom a previous relationship whilst protecting yourpartner.Getting the right advice and working out what is bestfor you and your loved ones could save thousands. Itdoesn’t matter how many times we write on this topicthere are still those that don’t listen and it is usually totheir loved ones cost. It is usual that children inherit on the death of the
second parent, they having left their assets to eachother in the first instance. One problem for the Expat in Spain, is that there is anillusion that upon death the estate passes automatically to the Spouse. This just isn’t right. Failure to make a Will causes unbelievable difficulties for the family left behind.
Whether we like it or not the Spanish system is in place to keep assets within the bloodline. As a UK national, English law applies to your SpanishWill and you do have the democratic right to leave your assets to whoever you wish, but make sure you get itright. If anyone just takes instructions from you without
discussing your circumstances and/or inheritance taxand your beneficiaries exposure to it – BEWARE. You
could be making a costly mistake.Cross border laws and tax implications are complex
and everyone is entitled to know their own positionbefore making an informed choice.

Our Sad losses
We are extremely sad to announce thepassing of three of our well-liked bowlingmembers Ron Gatward, Joe Verrico andJohn Bevington.
Ron, one of the original members of MonteMar Bowls Club, had been an active bowling member of the club, playing in theSouthern League and the SABA. Onlytwelve months ago, he was a member ofthe team that won the Monte Mar OpenTournament.
Every one that came into contact with Rondescribed him as a lovely man, alwaysgood-humoured and a friend to all.
Club members received a further blow, news arrived from the UK that another ofour members, Joe Verrico, has also passedaway.
Joe had not been seen at the club sinceNovember, when he set off for Australia tovisit family, and it was there that he wasfirst taken ill.
Having returned from Australia, he remained in the UK receiving treatment fora serious illness, but unfortunately to noavail.
Joe was a quiet but very friendly man, whose good manners and grace won himmany admirers and friends at the club.
Yet more sad news came when we heardof the sudden death of another of ourbowlers, Gran Alacant resident John Bevington, better known throughout ourclub as Biker John.
John played bowls only occasionally over
recent months owing to illness, but couldalways be relied upon to turn out for theclub when needed.
He and his wife Margaret were regularvisitors to the club as spectators, whereJohn entertained with his dry sense of humour.
All three will be sadly missed by all whoknew them, and we extend our sincerecondolences to their respective families.
Club Championships
As one of our ladies involved in the LadiesTriples Final has commitments in the UK,this final was moved forward to accommodate her.
The two teams that contested the finalwere Babs Caiger, Sue Bounds andPauline Woodfine up against Lynne Armitage, Janet Gatward and Pat Harman.
On a lovely sunny afternoon there was agood turnout of spectators supportingboth team, and they were treated to amaster class of bowls from the teamskipped by Pat Harman.
From the first end they took charge of thematch and eventually won by a large margin, so congratulations to them andcommiserations to the runners up.
The photograph (above) shows bothteams prior to the final, with match umpire Bill Young.

TEAR PROBLEMS
Ocular care is a fundamental part of ourpet’s health, that’s because it’s quite important forthe owner to check regularly the eyes of the pet, because most ocular problems have a slow evolution, so in many cases, when the animal ischecked by the Vet for the first time, the ocular disease may be on a late stage, when is more difficult to treat. In this article we are just going towrite about two ocular pathologies which affect theproduction of tears: an excess of tears caused by adefective drainage, and a tears deficit.
Tears have two main components: waterand mucus, so the deficit may affect just one ofthem, or both. Normally, when we say dry eye, wemean the eyeball is dry and not shiny, normally dueto a water deficit. The eyeball in these cases is covered by green mucus, which can be confusedwith pus or sebum, and just by washing the eye itlooks better, even if no treatment has been put (because we are wetting the eye). Of course, themain problem that caused the dry eye will still bethere unless is treated, and the process will continue its evolution, getting complicated very
often with a corneal ulcer, very painful and difficultto treat. So, the very first thing the owner reportswhen a dry eye appears, is mucus covering the eye, and, of course, conjunctivitis, and the animal feelsbetter after having the eyes washed.
What happens when there is a problemwith tears drainage system? We see an increasedquantity of tears or mucus, which usually improvesafter washing the eyes as well. In this case, theproblem comes from the impossibility of the tearsfor following their natural drainage way, through nasolacrimal duct, to the nose. This is the reason because dog’s nose is always wet. When the duct isobstructed (by mucus, or maybe because the animalis been born without it), the excess of tears stainsthe cheeks (the animal looks like it’s been crying). This is a typical problem of animals with short noseand big eyes, for example pugs and Persian cats. Besides, this kind of animals produce a bigger quantity of tears than other ones, for compensatingthe fact that their eyes are very exposed to traumas. The problem will be even bigger in long haired animals (Yorkshire terriers, Poodles), and in animalswhose face skin is full of wrinkles (Pug, Persian cat,English Bulldog), because, instead of falling down

the cheeks, the excess of tears will remain next tothe eye, infecting the skin, and producing a similarimage to dry eye: lots of mucus and red eye.
In those animals with long, hangingcheeks (Cocker Spaniels and Mastiffs), the lowereyelid is unable to cover properly the lower part ofthe eyeball, so that part of the conjunctiva will bepermanently exposed. This produces a chronicalconjunctivitis due to a continuous aggression bywind, dust, etc.
In all those cases, cleansing the eye withsome saline solution, and removing the excess ofmucus, will make the eyes improve temporally. If theproblem was just an irritation, this will be enough, but if no improvement can be seen in 24-48h, is timeto go to the Vet. In case of an obstructed nasolacrimal duct, is not an emergency or a seriousproblem, and will not endanger the eye or the senseof vision at all. The biggest problem, in these cases,is the skin sooner or later gets infected because isalways wet.
When the problem is a dry eye, it alwaysimplies a serious problem, and even more when itgets complicated with a corneal ulcer, which mayperforate the cornea within 12-24h.
Dogs and cats eyes (same as ours), mustn’t be manipulated, and we mustn’t “try” anyeye drops we have at home. The only thing we cando is to clean them with some saline (much betterthan warm water or chamomile) and to remove the
mucus with cotton tissues (a different one for everyeye, for avoiding crossing contamination).
When the pet eyes are irritated or photophobic or producing more mucus than normallonger than 24-48h, is time to see the Vet. In thiscase, you’d better don’t wash the eyes, for allowingthe Vet check what kind of secretion is it (mucus orpus), and the most important, for avoiding a false result of the tears test, which is the only way tomake a dry eye diagnosis. This disease, whichseems to have an immunological cause and is typical of West Highland and Yorkshire Terriers, wastreated in the past by a very difficult operation whichconsisted of relocating one of the saliva glands ductus next to the eye (the animal had to have 6-8meals a day to have the eye properly lubricated bythe saliva!), but nowadays immunomodulatorydrops are a more reasonable and effective treatment(must be done for life).
It’s not a normal condition for the eye tobe red, closed or dirty. May not be a big problem, orjust a hygiene deficit, but if you are not sure, just tellyour Vet.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
When my younger brother got his firstbike, he developed the unusual habit oflooking down at the foot pedals while hewas cycling along. A combination of thisand an unexpectedly parked car ledto a badly chipped front tooth anda determination not to cycle likethat ever again. If you don’t lookwhere you are going, you are boundto end up in a pickle eventually. This is something that our bird thismonth doesn’t seem to have learnt. Each year there are reports ofstunned Marsh Harriers which haveflown into trees, telegraph poles, electricity pylons and the like whileflying along at low level with theirheads down, which is their usualmethod of hunting. It is a rare breeding bird in the UK,but there are up to 1,000 breedingpairs in the whole of Spain. Thesenumbers are heavily augmentedduring the winter months by birdsvisiting from more northerly andeasterly parts of Europe, and several of these visit the Clot. Youmight mistake them at first for somespecies of eagle or buzzard (and thereare a few of those about as well) as theyare quite large birds, and they will driftslowly in the thermals as they hunt overtheir range in a similar fashion. Whatyou are looking for in the way of identification is a long-tailed bird withwings held in a shallow V shape as itcircles overhead. My photograph shows a female with acreamy-coloured head; the males areactually smaller and lighter coloured, with more grey in the tail and wings, and the head is streaked with grey and

brown. As the name implies, these arebirds of wetland areas, feeding on birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibianswhich they catch by flying along slowlyat low level, then dropping down suddenly to catch their prey. There havebeen reports of Marsh Harriers actuallydrowning their prey; sitting on the waterholding their catch beneath them untilthey were sure that it was dead. The Spanish name for the Marsh Harrieris Aguilucho Lagunero which of courserefers to their habitat – lagoons and
marshes – and the fact that it looks a bitlike an eagle. If you are in one of the birdhides in the Clot, or just strolling alongthe paths, and all of a sudden the wholeduck population seems to take to theskies in a quacking panic, it is worthwhile scanning the skies overhead tosee if one of these magnificent birds hasspooked them. You might like your paté,but the Marsh Harrier likes his Pato.
See you next month.
