Clinical Radiology (2002) 57: 1044±1045 Book Reviews Grainger & Allison's Diagnostic Radiology. By R. G. Grainger, D. Allison, A. Adam, A. Dixon. Hardback, Churchill Livingstone, Oct 2001. Price: £359 ISBN 0443064326 This is the fourth edition of this classic textbook, which was last revised in 1997. Five years is a long time in the rapidly developing ®eld of radiology, and this new edition gives a timely overview of the state of play in the advances in radiology alongside a solid ground of basics in radiology. Two new editors have been recruited, Professors Andreas Adam and Adrian Dixon, and the number of contributing authors, from dierent countries, have increased from around 130 in the last edition to 180. The size and organization of the book has not been changed signi®cantly since the last edition. The present edition is a 2622 page, over 5400 illustrations, three-volume textbook, organized into ten organ-system sections and 111 chapters. Special sections on `Angio- graphy, interventional radiography and other techniques' and `The reticuloendothelial system, oncology, AIDS' on the previous edition have been removed and some of these chapters redistributed to other sections or absorbed into the relevant system chapters. The biggest change in the contents of this book is the addition of system or organ speci®c paediatric chapters to most sections, most noticeably in the skeletal system section. These paediatric sections are conveniently located at the end of each section and allow quick reference without the need to sieve through adult conditions. A constellation of international experts have been selected for these sections, providing a broad spectrum of experience and expertise. Other new chapters attest the new advances in medicine and demands on radiology, they include: `Imaging of the chest after lung transplantation'; `Pre- and post-operative imaging in lung volume reduction'; `The radiology of liver transplantation'; `Interventional radiology in the gastrointestinal tract'; `Interventional techniques in the hepatobiliary system'. There is also a new chapter on the male reproductive system focusing on testicular and scrotal abnormalities and one on hysterosalpingography. As a re¯ection of societies' and governments' changing expectations and standards, some of the other new chapters for this edition include: `Clinical governance in radiology', `Clinical governance and audit', `Observer performance in diagnostic radiology' which have been placed in the ®rst section of the book. As indicated in the preface by the editors, this book is designed primarily for trainee radiologists, and also doubles as a quick revision reference for the general radiologist. For the trainee preparing for ®rst part examinations, the ®rst nine chapters are a great summary of all the dierent radiological modalities and their latest advances. While the description of the background physics has not been elaborate, these chapters provide a more clinically orientated approach, something not always found in more conventional textbooks on radiological physics. Clinical images are used for demonstrating the strength and weaknesses of each modality and sequence. The use of simple diagrams and tables help minimize the text. For the trainee preparing for exit examinations, the succinct text with key-point boxes are great for quick revision. The handsome and profuse illustrations could be read as a revision pictorial atlas. The extensive bibliography allows further, up-to-date referencing when necessary. The organization of this new edition is further along an organ system basis as opposed to an imaging modality or disease category based theme, which is of signi®cant bene®t to the user when confronted with a complex multi-modality case. Self-assessment at the end of extensive reading has proven to be the best way to crystallize the reader's thoughts, and also allows the authors to stress on essential knowledge. According to the authors there will be a companion multiple choice questions book for this edition just like the previous edition, which will undoubtedly please trainees preparing for examinations. For the post-examination radiologist, the concise, well-written chapters provide a refresher on topics that may have been forgotten. The chapters on medical legal issues and on clinical governance provide a global view of the realities faced by the practicing community. In the end, most of us as radiologists judge a book by its images, and this new edition will not disappoint. The images are now printed on a whiter shade of paper and the images have been printed with sharper contrast, both have made the text and images stand out better than in the previous edition. New, vivid colour images have been added to many chapters. These are invaluable in demonstrating vascular ultrasound and functional MRI ®ndings. We could ®nd no major errors or omissions. The text is extensively referenced, with both classic and recent articles. The table of contents is well organized into sections and sub-section chapters. The index is comprehensive and user-friendly. The authors have once again achieved the amazing feat of distilling the latest in modern radiological imaging into a compact, three-volume textbook. Improvements continue to come with each edition and set this book up as the benchmark for all general radiology textbooks. This should be the prime consideration for individuals or libraries wishing to purchase a comprehensive textbook in medical imaging. DR A. AHUJA DR G. ANTONIO 0009-9260/02/$35 # 2002 The Royal College of Radiologists Dierential Diagnosis in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. By F. A. Burgener, S. P. Meyers, R. K. Tan, W. Zaunbauer. Thieme, Stuttgart, 2002. Price: e189. Dierential Diagnosis in MRI is one of the latest productions by Thieme in their series of books which started o with Dierential Diagnosis in Conventional Radiology and has continued with Dieren- tial Diagnosis in Computed Tomography. This book is has a similar approach but concentrates on MRI. Previous volumes in this series have been extremely well-received and this current textbook continues the tradition of excellence. The basic approach of this textbook is to present the reader with a series of radiological signs with dierential diagnoses in tabular form, describing the individual pathological conditions that may cause them. At 645 pages long and containing more than 2000 images and diagrams the book is comprehensive in its coverage, with sections devoted to brain, head and neck, spine, musculoskeletal system and abdomen and pelvis. The size of the book re¯ects the burgeoning applications of modern MR to all aspects of imaging. Each chapter consists of an introduction, usually of two to three pages length. The introduction contains a brief synopsis of where MRI is useful in a particular diseased system, important anatomical and pathological concepts pertinent to a particular area are introduced and brief but pithy descriptions of the major pathological conditions that doi:10.1053/crad.2002.1105, available online at http://www.idealibrary.com on doi:10.1053/crad.2002.1098, available online at http://www.idealibrary.com on
