G-BEAR (Graduate Students for a Beneficial Experience Action Roundtable)
Good afternoon Students!
I hope this message finds you well. To maintain the upmost level of transparency in our initiatives, I wanted to share with
you some of the topics/discussions we had yesterday with some of your classmates during the spring G-BEAR meeting. The
agenda from yesterday, and the overview slides from the first meeting is attached for your review as well:
1. We shared updates from the Graduate Studies team with regards to initiatives and passed around new on boarding materials
that were created for incoming students. You are welcome to visit our office to view them and offer additional feedback from
your own personal experiences of transitioning into graduate school.
2. We also wanted to ensure that you are receiving our emails, newsletters, etc. and asked about other possible forms of com-
munication that would work. With Facebook and Twitter live, we encourage everyone to "like" or "follow" us if you use
these forms of social media. In addition, we have created a subgroup on LinkedIn for alumni and current students to network
with each other. We have over 10,000 graduate studies alumni of Potsdam. We want to get you connected!
3. Next week, we will be hosting the "Graduate Studies Connects" networking event on campus. This will also serve as an
opportunity to officially launch the "Graduate Studies 360" climate survey, designed to help support and guide the direction
that we will head as a support office for all graduate students moving forward. You can download the flyer at
www2.potsdam.edu/lafavejj/springnetworking.pdf. If you know of someone applying to graduate school here at Potsdam,
they are certainly welcome to attend with you!
4. We have new boards in the graduate studies wing! These boards will help facilitate communication, and spotlight some of
the great research and projects you are working on. Your faculty will be sharing this information with you very soon.
5. Classmates and Graduate Studies discussed other times of programming that would appeal to them and would participate
in. Among some of the ideas discussed were workshops centered around professional growth (i.e. thesis writing, career
search/planning, using social media to network, etc.). In addition, we discussed "open mic" nights, whereby a graduate pro-
gram might host a topic for discussion that is relatable to students of any academic or professional career path.
6. Physical space for graduate students was also a concern, and discussions around a graduate lounge and graduate computer
lab were noted. We agree with these concerns, and are working on proposals for consideration.
7. Two possible project ideas that Graduate Studies shared related to "alumni in residence" programs, and a "Northern NY
Master's level research conference." Students in attendance were receptive to these ideas, and additional work will be done
with students participation and feedback upon moving forward in any planning.
8. Graduate Studies is also working with our Watertown coordinator to identify programming and support within the Water-
town area as well.
These are just a few of the key items that we discussed during our meeting. It is a great opportunity to connect with students,
and plan together, the continual improvement of the graduate student experience. I welcome additional ideas, and hope that
you will visit us to discuss your experience, concerns, and more here in Satterlee 116.
New Graduate Information boards Come check out the new bulletins boards for information that is valuable to you! If you have research and
projects and are willing to share them with us, we’d love to celebrate your accomplishments!
Student Spotlight— Jake Offield
From: Salem, NY
Potsdam undergrad degree: BFA (photography)
Potsdam graduate degree: MSED, OPLT (discovered because his supervisors in
Res. Life were enrolled in ICT)
Position: Currently working as a Residence Life RD (Graduate Assistant) and
intern for Graduate Studies
Responsibilities: Within Graduate Studies, Jake is working with Graduate Stud-
ies with rebranding, supporting awareness, and presence on campus through his
design experiences and background.
Career Goals: Jake wants to use his current skillset and experiences from work-
ing in areas like Residence Life to perhaps work in design for a magazine or in stu-
dent public affairs at a university.
How has the Graduate Studies internship helped you? It provides me with
the opportunity to collaborate with the department (Graduate Studies) for designs
to rebrand a department. It’s a great experience for me to design for a “client” and
learn the nuances of meeting expectations related to the needs of that client. Creative work fostered professional
experience useful for my future as I work with clients and understanding how to meet their needs.
Future Role: He could see this becoming more of a programing type (Residence Life background showing here) of role
that encompasses an expanding function that takes more common space. It could support event advertising to
fellow students for event planning & organizing and finding funding.
Graduate Studies would like to thank Jake for lending his skills this semester as we work
to be visible on campus! Display boards on the previous page were designed by Jake, as
well as our templates for new onboarding materials and more! Please join us in thank-
ing Jake!
Don’t forget to register!!

Academic Festival Please take note of these events for the upcoming Academic Festival, "Making the Future." The following events
feature Jane LaTour, and we think they will be of interest to you and your students. Ms. LaTour is an award win-
ning journalist and oral historian who, for the past 30 years, has chronicled the battles of the remarkable women that
broke the gender barrier to employment in New York City's male-dominated skilled trades. Her 2008 book, "Sisters
in the Brotherhoods," has received wide praise.
This is a great opportunity to discuss writing and research, oral history methods, and the continuing struggle for
equality. In addition to campus events, Ms. LaTour also will visit an area BOCES Technical Center. She'll
discuss her work, activism, and research with students and faculty, and participate in a panel discussion about young
people and workforce issues.
*Please encourage your students to attend the following events on Thursday, April 11.
10:00 - 11:00 AM at Crumb Library and LTEC -- Meet and Greet Jane LaTour, with a photo display of tradeswom-
en from S"isters" and audio recordings from Jane's interviews. (Photo exhibition ongoing from April 3-12)
2:00 - 3:00 PM Speakers Panel with Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Jane LaTour & Addie Russell: "Empowering
Women" (tentative title)
