FundingandFinancialSupport

TheDepartmentmayprovidefinancialsupporttograduatestudentsinavarietyofways,suchasGTA’s,RA’s,andscholarships.Pleasecontactyoursupervisororgroupcoordinatorforinformation.

AllstudentswhoreceivepayfromtheUniversitymustcompletethebankinginformationonBearTracks.GraduateTeachingAssistantship(GTA)GraduateTeachingAssistantsprovidesupporttotheundergraduateprogram.Thismaybeintheformofmarkingoritmayinvolveassistinginalaboratoryortutorial.StudentsinterestedinbeingaGraduateTeachingAssistantinparticularcoursesshouldinformtheirgroupcoordinator.GTA’sareassignedonaterm-by-termbasisandthenumberofhoursperweekrangesfrom4to12.Thisnumberapproximatelyreflectstheaveragetimecommitmentoftheassignmentandnotthepeaktimecommitmentinanyoneweek.Itshouldbepointedoutthatwhiletheacademictermisthirteenweekslong,astudentwithaGTAispaidforsixteenweeksofwork.

AutomaticDeductionofOutstandingFeesandTuition

TheUniversity’spayrollsystemautomaticallydeductsoutstandingtuitionandfeesfromthepaychecksofgraduateteachingandresearchassistantsonemonthafterthestartofFall,Winter,SpringandSummerterms.AnyFalltuitionowingasofOctober1willbedeductedfromthestudent’sOctober,NovemberandDecemberpaycheckinsixbi-monthlyinstallmentstoamaximumof80%ofyoursalary.Ifthereistuitionleftowingattheendoftheterm,FinancialServiceswillissueastatementlettingyouknowtheamountthatisdue.Similarly,anyWintertuitionowingasofFebruary1willbeautomaticallydeductedfromthestudent’sFebruary,MarchandAprilpaycheckinsixbi-monthlyinstallments.Also,studentswillhaveautomaticdeductionsfromtheirpaychecksinJune,JulyandAugust.Deductionsoccurtwiceamonth.Studentscannotexemptthemselvesfromthispayrolldeduction.Note:Theautomaticpayrolldeductionisonlytakenfromassistantshipfunding.Installmentsarenotwithdrawnfromanyscholarshipfundingstudentsmaybereceiving.

Graduatestudentsregisteringinanytermareconsideredtoconfirmtheirintentiontoattendbymaintainingaregistration.Studentsareresponsibleforfeesunlesstheywithdrawbytheappropriatedeadline.

ProvinciallegislationcompelstheUniversitytoassessaDifferentialFeetoallstudentswhoarenotCanadianCitizensorPermanentResidents.Currently,theDifferentialFeeforgraduatestudentsisanadditional100%ofthetotalInstructionFeesassessed.TheDifferentialFeedoesnotapplytoNon-InstructionalFees.StudentswhobecomePermanentResidentstoCanadabeforetheendofatermmustinformtheDepartment,TheFacultyofGraduateStudiesandStaffandStudentPayments,bypresentingtheiroriginallandingpapers.Thedifferentialfeemayberecalculatedforthatterm.Theymaynotbechargedadifferentialfeeinthatterm.

TheDepartmentoffersMEng,MScandPhDdegreesineachoftheresearchareas,outlinedseparatelybelow.Inadditiontodisciplinespecificdegreeprograms,theDepartmentoffersaninterdisciplinarydegreeprograminCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringthatprovidestheopportunityfor

interdisciplinarystudiesinmorethanonearea.InformationregardingspecificdegreerequirementsisprovidedintheUniversityCalendar,section205.13.1

Thesis-BasedPrograms

Thesisregistrationisrestrictedtostudentsinthesis-basedgraduatedegreeprograms.Qualifying,Special,andVisitinggraduatestudentsmaynotregisterinThesis.

Thespecificthesisregistrationselectedbythestudentwilldependupontheamountoftimeduringtheterm(s)thatthestudentwilldevotetoworkonhis/herprogram.

Thesissectionsarescheduledaccordingtounitsofcourseweightequivalency.

StudentsshallconsultwiththeDepartmenttodeterminewhichoftheThesissectionsareappropriate.

ByregisteringintheappropriateThesisdesignation(alongwithanyothercourses),theregistrationstatusofthestudentiscalculatedautomatically.

Studentsinthesis-basedmastersanddoctoralprogramsmustregisterinThesisduringtheregistrationperiodinwhichthethesisandfinalprogramcompletiondocumentationissubmittedintheFacultyofGraduateStudiesandResearch.

PleasenotethatnewfeescheduleshavebeenimplementedforFall2011termorafter.Studentsshouldconsulttheuniversitywebsiteortheregistrarofficefortheappropriatefeeschedules.

DoctorofPhilosophy

Theminimumperiodofresidenceistwofull-timeacademictermsattheUniversityofAlberta.Thetwotermsneednotbeconsecutive.Thecourserequirementsfordoctoralprogramsaredifferentinthevariousdisciplines(SeeGroupCourseRequirements).However,allgraduatestudentsmustcompleteENGG600andtheUofAProfessionalDevelopmentRequirement.

ThisresidencyprovidesstudentswithsignificantcontactwiththeUniversityofAlbertathroughtimespentoncampusandthroughinteractionswithfacultymembersandothergraduatestudents.Iteducatesthestudenttobeanindependentresearcherandscholarinanacademicdiscipline,throughcoursework,seminarparticipation,teaching,facultyinteractionandfaculty-directedresearch.Alldoctoralcandidatesmustprepareanddefendathesisofhighcalibreonanapprovedtopic.

ProgramGuidelines

Supervisor Normallyassignedattimeofadmission.SupervisorsarenominatedbytheDepartmentonanApprovalofSupervisorandSupervisoryCommittee-DoctoralformtotheFGSR.

SupervisoronLeave Ifasupervisor’sleaveexceedstwomonths,theyarerequiredtomakeadequateprovisionforsupervisionoftheirgraduatestudentsduringtheirleave.TheymustsubmitawrittenstatementtotheDepartmentandtothestudent,describingarrangementsforsatisfactorysupervisionduringleave.

SupervisoryCommittee Formednolaterthantheendoffirstyear.TheDepartmentnominatesthesupervisorycommitteeonanApprovalofSupervisorandSupervisoryCommittee-DoctoralformtotheFGSR.

Meetswithstudentannuallytoreviewprogramandprogress,nolaterthanAugust31ofagivenyear.

CandidacyExamination Normallywithintwoyearsandnotlessthansixmonthspriortofinalexamination.TheDepartmentsetsthedatefortheexaminationandrecommendstheexaminingcommitteetotheFGSR.Allprogramrequirements,otherthanthethesis,mustbecompletedwithinthreeyearsofthecommencementofastudent’sprogram.

Four(4)weekspriortotheexamination,theDepartmentsubmitsaNoticeandApprovalofDoctoralCandidacyExaminingCommittee&ExaminationDateformtotheFGSR.

Afterasuccessfulexamination,theDepartmentsubmitsaReportofCompletionofCandidacyformtoFGSR.Ifnotsuccessful,theDepartmentrecommendsthebestcourseofactiontoFGSR.

FinalOralExamination Tobecompletedpriortosettingexaminationdatesandbeforethethesisissenttotheexternalexaminer.Allsupervisorycommitteemembersdeclareinwritingtothesupervisorthatthethesisisadequatetoproceedtothefinaloralexamination.

Threemonthspriortoexamination:supervisornominatesanexternalexaminerandproposesadatefortheexaminationandthecompositionoftherestoftheexaminingcommittee.

Twomonthspriortoexamination,theDepartmentnominatesanexternalexaminertotheFGSRandcompletesaRequesttoInviteExternalReaderorExaminerforFinalDoctoralOralExaminationform.TheDepartmentinvitestheexternalexaminer.

Fourweekspriortoexamination,theDepartmentmustensurethattheexternalexaminerreceivesthethesis.

Threeweekspriortoexamination,theDepartmentrecommendsexaminingcommitteememberstotheFGSRusingaNoticeandApprovalofDoctoralFinalOralExaminingCommittee&ExaminationDateform,notifiesexaminersofthedate,andsuppliesacopyofthethesistothem.

Shortlyaftertheexamination,theDepartmentadvisestheFGSRofthecommittee’sdecisiononaThesisApproval/ProgramCompletionform.

Withinsix(6)monthsofFinalOralexamination,thestudentmustsubmittheirthesisforreviewandapprovalbytheFGSR.

MasterofScience

Aresearch-basedmaster’sdegreewithnoresidencyrequirement.

Requiresfromsixtoeightgraduatecourses,dependingontheresearcharea,completionofENGG600,theUofAProfessionalDevelopmentRequirement,andathesis.Thestudentmustdefendthethesisbeforeapanelofthreeormoreacademicstaffmembers,includingthethesissupervisor.

ThetimerequiredtocompletetheMScprogramwillvaryaccordingtotheprevioustrainingofthestudentandthenatureoftheresearchundertaken.However,twoyearsisnormallytheminimumtimerequired,withamaximumoffouryearstocompletetheprogram(fromthedateoffirstregistration).

FinalOralExamination Completedpriortosettingexaminationdatesandbeforethethesisissenttotheexaminingcommittee.Allsupervisorycommitteemembersdeclareinwritingtothesupervisorthatthethesisisadequatetoproceedtothefinaloralexamination.

TheDepartmentreceivesinformationfromthesupervisoraminimumof3.5to4weekspriortotheexam,recommendsexaminingcommitteememberstoFGSRusingaNoticeandApprovalofaMaster'sFinalOralExaminingCommittee&ExaminationDateform,notifiesexaminersofthedate,andsuppliesacopyofthethesistothem.

Immediatelyaftertheexamination,theDepartmentadvisestheFGSRoftheexaminingcommittee’sdecision,ontheThesisApproval/ProgramCompletionform.

Withinsix(6)monthsofexamination,thestudentmustsubmittheirthesisforreviewandapprovalbytheFacultyofGraduateStudiesandResearch.

Course-BasedProgram(s)

MasterofEngineering

MasterofEngineering(MEng)isanon-thesis,course-basedmaster’sdegreewithnoresidencyrequirement.TheMEngprogramcanbecompletedinaminimumofninemonths,uptothemaximumtimeoffouryearsfromthedateoffirstregistration.

RequirescompletionofeightgraduatecoursesandaResearchProject(900level).CompletionofENGG600,andtheUofAProfessionalDevelopmentrequirementisalsorequired.Theresearchprojectisthework-equivalentofonecourse(approximately160hoursofwork).Theresearchprojectisnotdefendedandneedsonlytheapprovalofthesupervisor.

StudentsintheMEngprogrammustregisterinaminimumof 3ofcourseworkorinMREG800MaintainingRegistrationforatleastonetermineachSeptembertoAugustperiodtokeeptheirprogramactive.

MEngstudentsmustmakearrangementswithaprofessorintheproposedprojectareatoactasasupervisorfortheirresearchproject.

MEngstudentsmustberegisteredinResearchProject(900-level)inthetermtheycompletetheirresearchproject.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytosubmittheirresearchprojectwellinadvanceoftheendofthetermtoensurethattheprojectsupervisorhasenoughtimetoevaluatethereport.ResearchProject(900-level)isrestrictedtostudentsincourse-basedmaster’sprograms.

DegreeCourseRequirements

NotethatallgraduatestudentsmustcompleteENGG600:EngineeringEthics&Integrity,andtheUofAProfessionalDevelopmentRequirement.

TheDegreeofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringisaninterdisciplinarydegreeprogramthatprovidestheopportunityforinterdisciplinarystudyinmorethanoneresearchareasfocussuchasinminingandpetroleumengineering,innano-materialandenvironmentalengineering,inbiomechanicsandstructuralengineering,andintransportationpavementmaterialandgeotechnicalengineering,etc.TheDepartmentoffersthedegreeinMasterofScienceandDoctorofPhilosophystartingFall2014.

MasterofEngineering 8coursesdeterminedonacase-by-casebasis,plusaresearchproject(CIVE900).

MasterofScience Courserequirementsdeterminedonacase-by-casebasisdependingonstudent’sbackground.Normallyaminimumof6graduatecoursesbeyondthebachelor’sdegreeplusthesis.

Responsibilities

Student

Graduatestudentsareultimatelyresponsibleforthecompletenessandaccuracyoftheirownprograms.

Studentsareadvisedto:

+ MaintainopencommunicationwiththeirsupervisorandGraduateCoordinatorconcerninganyproblemeitherrealorperceived.

+ Choose,withthesupervisor’sassistance,aresearchtopicthatissuitableandthatthesupervisoriscompetenttosupervise.

+ Beconsistentlywell-preparedformeetingswiththeirsupervisor.

+ Realizethatsupervisorshavedutiesandcommitmentswhichmaydelayshortnoticeappointmentsordelaythereturnofdraftresearchwork.

+ Beresponsibleforadjustmentsintheirregistration.

+ BeexpectedtoreadtheonlineCalendarandanyotherrelevantdocumentstobecomefamiliarwithallregulationsanddeadlinesrelatingtotheirprograms.

+ Consultwiththeirsupervisororwithadepartmentrepresentativewhentheyareindoubtabouttheregulationspertainingtotheirprogram.

+ Ensurethattheirregistrationisaccurateanddoesnotlapse,submittingappropriateformstothedepartmentforsignatureandprocessing.

oftheFGSRaremet.+ RecommendandkeeptheFGSRinformedofanydevelopmentinorchangesrelatingtothe

student’sprogram.Thisincludestheappointmentofthesupervisorandsupervisorycommitteemembers(whereapplicable)andchangestothatofmembership,changeofstudentstatus,courseandprogramchanges,schedulingofexaminationdates,etc.

Eachgraduatestudentsupervisorisexpectedtoprovideanenvironmentforthestudentwhichisconducivetoresearchwherethestudentcanexpecttoexpandintellectually.Eachsupervisorshould:

+ Reviewthethesis,bothindraftandinfinalform.FacultyofGraduateStudiesandResearch(FSGR)

TheFGSRisresponsibleforthegeneraladministrationofgraduateprograms,fromtheadmissionandregistrationofgraduatestudentsthroughtoconvocation.TheFGSRofficehousesdocumentationrelatedtoapplication,admission,programs,coursegrades,examinations,awards,andtheses.Itisresponsiblefor:

+ Theadmissionofstudents;forthesettingofminimumentrancerequirementsandminimumacademicstandingrequirements,andforensuringthatthesearemet.

+ Approvingallchangestostudentsprogramsandtheappointmentofsupervisors,supervisorycommitteesandexaminingcommittees.

+ Submittingapprovalofchangesaffectingpolicy,generalanddegreeregulations,etc.,totheCounciloftheFacultyofGraduateStudiesandResearch.

Agraduateeducationisnotjustaboutadvancingresearch.Yourprofessionaldevelopmentisalsoakeypartofbuildingyourfuturecareer.Andmakingyourselfcompetitiveintheglobalmarketbeginsthedayyouarriveoncampus.GraduatestudentscandevelopprofessionalskillsandqualitiessoughtbyemployersthroughmanyUAlbertaresources.Fromcultivatingateachingportfoliotopreparingforcareersoutsideacademia,therearesessionsandworkshopsyear-roundtohelpyouworktowardscreatingaprofessionaldevelopmentfootprint.
