Activities to Do Together
VocabularyUse the Target Vocabulary words in a story you and your child make up that contains a moral.
Rhyme TimeHave fun making up rhyming sentences about your favorite animals. Take turns with your child creating couplets, or two-line rhymes. For example: “A lion has great big feet. He uses his teeth to help him eat.”
Animal Report Think about an animal you would like to know more about. Use library books and the Internet to find out more about it. Then help your child write a short report featuring the information you found.
Dear Family,This week we’ll find out how one act of kindness leads to another in the folktale Half-Chicken. We’ll also learn about acts of kindness in the traditional tale The Lion and the Mouse. Both selections will be a springboard for discussing the question “Why are some stories told over and over again?”
This week’s…Target Vocabulary: tumbling, flung, tangled, empty, peacefully, stream, blazed, swift
Phonics Skills: Prefixes re-, un-, over-, pre-, mis-; silent consonants
Vocabulary Strategy: Antonyms
Comprehension Skill:Cause and effect—tell how one event makes another happen
Comprehension Strategy: Visualize—picture what is happening as you read
Writing Focus: Informative/explanatory writing—research report
Go to the eBook to read and listen to this week’s selection.

Fox and MoleRead the chant with a partner. Use Target Vocabulary words to talk about what you learned about helping others.
I overheard a tale one time
about a fox and mole.
Their friendship was unique, I heard.
And so the story goes:
“Help me! Help me!” Fox cried out,
“I’m stuck inside this hole.”
“My claws are sharp. My paws are swift.
Let me help!” suggested Mole.
Mole quickly flung the dirt aside,
and Fox came tumbling out.
Then Fox and Mole played peacefully,
running all about.

Half-ChickenSelection Summary
ELL Lesson 24blackline master ell24 .6
Half-ChickenLong ago, a chick was born. It was not an ordinary
chick. It had only one wing, one eye, one leg, and half
the feathers as other chicks. Everyone called him Half-
Chicken.
One day, Half-Chicken overheard the other
animals talking about him. They said he was even more
unique than anyone at the court of the viceroy in
Mexico City. Half-Chicken decided to visit the viceroy.
On his way, he found a stream that was blocked.
He moved some branches so the stream could keep
going. Then he found a fire that was about to go out. He
fanned the fire. The fire blazed. Then he found the
wind tangled in some bushes. It blew again because
Half-Chicken untangled it.
At the viceroy’s enormous palace, a cook threw
Half-Chicken into a soup pot. The fire suggested that
the water put him out to save Half-Chicken. Then
the wind lifted Half-Chicken up to the roof.
They helped Half-Chicken because he helped
them. That is why we see weathercocks
standing on roofs on their only leg.
